loved the concept-couldn't get into the movie.
posted on 10 Jul 2009I actually saw Full Monty quite a bit after it came out and saw it at a friend's house. Of coarse I already knew the plot and assumed I'd love it. Unfortunately, that was not to be. I can't give a super analysis of why I didn't get into this. Perhaps, for me, one of the main problems, is the slow movingness of the Plot. This is a very long movie(or SEEMED to be) and I just could not get into it At all. Nor did I find It particularly funny. I actually like and appreciate movies that are similar to this but something just failed to click for me here.I want to give this another chance because I didn't hate it, just was a bit bored and didn't have the patience for it because it develops slowly. I think the movie really needed to movie at a brisker pace and also I was hyped up expecting a perfect 10 so perhaps I will give this one another shot. I much preferred last year's Calendar Girls which was much faster moving in nature, but I do think the premise of Monty was a scream. We'll see how it goes on another viewing.
Where's the subtitles????
posted on 10 Jul 2009The British accents and slang were so earthy in this that it was difficult to determine what they said. I'm not the only person who said this, and I'm not trying to be cruel: they did the same thing with "Riff Raff", the film by Ken Loach, which was also about British working class life.Just another one of those movies where you see it and don't understand what all the scuttlebutt was about. What's more, you read the storyline and you already know what's going to happen in the finale; I mean, it's not as if they're going to have rotten vegetables thrown at them, is it? The film wasn't anything new as far as storyline goes, but it is "uplifting", as one of the members is overweight and has a difficult time accepting his own appearance.I'm sure this movie would appeal to an entire audience; to an individual person, that's a whole other story. You'll have no problem predicting what's going to happen, finding cliches, even flaws...
Overhyped and who cares
posted on 11 May 2009Sorry to those who liked this, but I saw almost nothing that warranted all the praise I've heard for this movie. I expected much more. It was at times good for a chuckle, but it really didn't do much for me. I didn't care all that much for the characters. Some of them were very underdeveloped and boring. There were few surprises. The plot was straightforward and the end did nothing to change that. I thought this to be a waste of time and I usually like British comedy. Entertaining to a degree but I wouldn't give this movie more than a 5.
Robert, you can take your hat off any time!!
posted on 09 May 2009A must for any video collection. After seeing it on the big screen, I just had to have a copy for myself. It still makes me laugh every time. Robert Carlyle is brillant - watch out for him in 'Angela's Ashes' - he's sure to cause a stir!
Another good movie!
posted on 24 Apr 2009I just LOVE this film. It kept me laughing, and it was funny to watch these guys struggling to do this show, and in the end, they definitely delivered. Another good Robert Carlyle film, 5 stars, and the cast and music is definitely great. I would definitely say buy this, if British comedies are your thing!
Boring garbage.
posted on 09 Apr 2009Beats me how some people found this funny. I thought it was pathetic. Bad actors trying so hard to be funny. Didn't work for me I'm afraid. Although I am English I hate British movies. They are all such cheap and nasty productions with bad actors and corny British accents. If you have a brain dont buy this film!
AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL
posted on 27 Mar 2009I saw this film some time ago when it was on TV and to put it simply... it made me ashamed to be British, it's absolutely AWFUL!!! I cannot believe it won an OSCAR!!! it sells itself (to the female population I imagine) on the fact that there will be naked guys bodies left right and center but this doesn't happen until the very end! The storyline is very weak, 'council house trailer trash' and cheap and to add insult to injury they insert a gay subplot WHY!?!?!?!?! I believe this movie made a lotta money in this country, god knows why, it says a lot about the 'movie going' public doesn't it! DO NOT WASTE 2 HOURS? OF YOUR LIFE ON THIS RUBBISH! go and see Four Weddings And A Funeral... now THAT is a movie to be proud of!!!
My 2 cents worth...
posted on 21 Mar 2009I'd like to comment on this movie, but since it bored me to sleep TWICE, I can't say I've seen it! With all the hype and recommendations, I was expecting to be laughing my posterior end off. But, I ended up falling asleep twice during the movie.
About the only movies I can think of that were more boring are "Eyes Wide Shut" and "Punch Drunk Love".Now, to be fair, I'm sure part of my dislike for this waste of my time is the fact that I usually don't enjoy movies where the characters speak with heavy British accents. But, I can't blame my passionate dislike for this waste of film on that!On a scale of 1 to 10, I give this a 1. It's rubbish.
Wonderful Comedy
posted on 07 Mar 2009This is a wonderful comedy, and the last song says it all: that you have right to life and to spice it up. I liked most the magical moments when even something like male-strip dance transforms into art; e.g. the time when the group-members start dancing to the tune at the employment office. Also, it gives a chance to realize the different odd ways to express basic feelings: parental affection, marital bond, camaraderie.
I saw it for free and still felt ripped off.
posted on 03 Mar 2009It takes a lot to ruin a free movie, and the Full Monty had plenty of awful and cliched crappy dialogue. The story is a pathetic attempt at humour, and considering England is capable of producing Monty Python, I do not see how anybody who has ever laughed at a clever movie could find even a sole laugh in this monstrosity. None of the characters were interesting nor well-developed and the plot was painfully predictable. What a waste!
Packed with humor and human nature!
posted on 05 Feb 2009A fabulous performance by versatile Scottish actor Robert Carlyle ("Angela's Ashes" and "Trainspotting") is accompanied by a chubbier Mark Addy (Fred Flintstone in "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas",) Tom Wilkinson ("The Patriot" and soon, "The Importance of Being Earnest") and three others to complete the funniest sextet of actors you are likely to see in some time. They set out to do "The Full Monty," i.e. strip down to bare bottom for the women of the formerly prosperous Steel-City of Sheffield, as a means of making some money to live through unemployment. Packed with humor and human nature, "The Full Monty" takes you through the preparation of this odd team of former steel workers to do a full striptease, an act they have top pull together in less than two weeks. I bet you will want to add it to your video collection.
Simply Wonderful!
posted on 05 Feb 2009An excellent movie, The Full Monty, brings to the screen the story of six unemployed men living in an economically depressed region of England, who in an effort to make ends meet decide to put up a male striptease act...
Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy, Tom Wilkinson and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, it allows for a highly entertaining movie that can be watched over and over again!
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the HUMOR and the MUSIC are all wonderful!
In short, The Full Monty is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!
Watch it for, well just watch it, trust me!
posted on 04 Feb 2009What I got out of this movie was more than I expected. It first came out with a lot of hype when I was about 11 so I didn't think I'd enjoy this dark looking English comedy at all. After recently catching a screening of it I was wrong. At that age I would've enjoyed it and it's still up to date to this day. The story and characters were marvelously funny and realistic. It seems to just keep you in your chair wondering what the next blunder for the ill-fated group of friends will be. You would probably be used to seeing perfect looking Hollywood pretty boys, but this film goes to a better length and it's cast consists of average looking everyday English Joes.An unemployed steel worker named Gaz running low on funds desperately needs money otherwise his wife receives soul custody over their son Nathan. After breaking in to a strip club he gets a crazy idea. With his best friend Dave, the two of them band together a group of four more steel workers in short of greens. To make proper cash they all decide they need to do something original. To go where not many have gone before. To go the full monty. Translation strip to their bare full skin. The humor mixed with the music makes up for a very enjoyable time. It's sharp, original and witty. A classic. 10/10
British!
posted on 29 Jan 2009I don't agree with people who say British films are no good. Snatch Lock Stock Billy Elliot Full Monty Love Actually TrainspottingBritain can produce films just as good as Hollywood movies even on a lower budget . If we sold the right of Trainspotting to Hollywood , I'm guessing we'd have seen a completely different film . most likely filled with explosions , aliens and long car chases. America does destroy a lot of British humour. As well as the language ( Check the spelling of Aluminium - Not as you say Alu-min-um.) Look what they did to " The Office " .
A true classic of modern British comedy.
posted on 20 Jan 2009Many British comedies have the same basic premise: a group of losers, working their way to a often ridiculous goal. Be it "The Commitments" or "Waking Ned Devine", it nearly always works. The plot isn't terribly complicated, just six guys making some extra cash stripping. Peter Cattaneo has assembled a perfect cast, with wonderful performances from Robert Carlyle and Mark Addy. I especially appreciated the way that the characters were portrayed - like real people, not simply jokes."The Full Monty" is sure to entertain anyone who watches it, and is certainly deserving of it's popularity.7.7 out of 10
Not My Cup Of Tea
posted on 18 Jan 2009I guess the only people who bothered to review this film loved it. I know I am not the only one who hated it, because other people have told me they hated it too.
I could not wait to watch this video. I had heard so much about it. I was so excited. I was going to get to see the wonderful, funny, "The Full Monty." Ten minutes into the film I knew I was in for a long, boring experience. I had a hard time understanding what the characters were saying. The story interested me not a bit. The only thing I thought WAS interesting was when the guys were practicing their strip tease. Unfortunately, it never lasted long enough. I was so relieved when this film was over. I felt like I had just gone through an endurance test. And before anyone tries to tell me I don't understand the British "sense of humor," my favorite book I had to read in college was written by a British man, and it was a funny book (The Complete Yes Minister). I just didn't like "The Full Monty."

I loved it!!!!!!!
posted on 22 Aug 2009I took my husband to see this at the theatre and didn't tell him what it was about. It was one of the nicest afternoons that we have spent together in years. Even my 75 year old mother enjoyed it. My son just bought me the sound track for Mothers day!
