TAGLINES PLOT SUMMARY

The story begins as "Don" Vito Corleone, the head of a New York Mafia "family", oversees his daughter's wedding. His beloved son Michael has just come home from the war, but does not intend to become part of his father's business. Through Michael's life the nature of the family business becomes clear. The business of the family is just like the head of the family, kind and benevolent to those who give respect, but given to ruthless violence whenever anything stands against the good of the family. Don Vito lives his life in the way of the old country, but times are changing and some don't want to follow the old ways and look out for community and "family". An up and coming rival of the Corleone family wants to start selling drugs in New York, and needs the Don's influence to further his plan. The clash of the Don's fading old world values and the new ways will demand a terrible price, especially from Michael, all for the sake of the family.

Most accomplished US film

posted on 30 Aug 2009

This epic of epics, in my wholehearted view, remains to this day America's  most accomplished feature film. Even without understanding the dialogue's nuances or the storyline's elaborate twists, one is still inexorably drawn to the movie, as I found myself to be since the earliest time. What makes it so enormously appealing and deeply satisfying is Copolla's masterful direction. Every frame is constructed in such an ingenious manner, that if taken out of context and hung up on a wall as a painting, it would take up another value, becoming as work of art in and of itself. Indeed, it is tempting to compare the dark indoor compositions (the mise-en-scenes' arrangement especially) to Rembrandt and other Dutch masters, without exaggeration. The staging of each scene is handled with the kind of technical and spiritual balance advocated only in Eastern religions: no extreme close-ups, no jittery or stale camera movements. On a visual level, "The Godfather" possesses an ethereal beauty regardless of content. The picture's other aspects reveal an astounding proximity to irrefutable perfection: an immortal original score with at least three distinguished motifs; the superlative acting by all of the Corleone Mafia clan and their enemies; the compelling plot which swiftly unfolds before us through, among other things, the most riveting montage since "Battleship Potemkin", no less. Even its minute details are widely quoted today: what comes most easily to mind is the shot-by-shot parody of Brando's botched assassination in '99's "Analyze This", and the more obscure slang term : "to pull a Fredo", coined  in "Swingers" (one of the 90's hippest comedies). Just to decipher the later (decidedly dirty) reference should be a good excuse to watch "The Godfather" yet again.

Godfather part 2 isn't as good, but after seeing this film how could it have been? So realistic in the perfect mobster atmosphere. Sadly the series is over, but oh well...............10/10...5/5...PERFECT...The Shawshank Redemption was good...and so was LOTR 3...but they will never compare to this Classic!!! The best series....the best movie.....everything in this film is great...just perfect...I LOVED IT...AND STILL DO...

What happened To the original version of this film

posted on 27 Aug 2009

I would like to know what happened to this film and why was it edited and not available in it,s original version any more.I know Coppola edited it for television around 1976 and the standard version that is available now is a very wimpy version of the film I saw in 1972 and a few more times in the mid seventies.First of all the sex scene between Sonny and Lucy actually showed some nudity, where in the current version it just shows the end part. All of the foul language is all edited or overdubbed, and the scene where Sonny is assassinated is missing some frames and is less violent than it,s original form.I am a big fan of James Can and the scene where he gets the news of his fathers shooting has been removed along with where he tells his mom about it.After he gets the phone call from Connie because Carlo beat her again it cuts the part out where Sonny comes storming out of the house using the four letter word three or four times. This is also missing. The Godfather (uncut) is the best film ever made and was James Caans most searing performance.I would like to know if I can find it anywhere as I have been searching for over twenty years now and am deeply saddened that such a fine movie was ruined.Help please.

Just another violent movie...

Just another violent gang movie, whats the big deal? I hate these sort of movies about mafia guys going around with guns thinking they are all tough, put them in a ring one on one with Tyson and see how tough they are. I Don't understand why this movie is so praised, Whats the big deal? There is enough violent gang movies around, what makes this one special? There are so many movies better than this one out there, don't waste your time with this. I suppose there must be lots of fans of this movie like there is for lots of other violent pointless ****house movies such as Sin City and the likes, I guess this just highlights that there must be fairly big problems in our society today, why would anyone find this sort of negative and pointless junk enjoyable? The way that this sort of thing is portrayed in movies as being "cool" is really quite sickening, I wonder how many people who have had personal experience with murder and violence would find this sort of thing enjoyable, not many I would say. If you think you are going to get anything worthwhile out of this movie think again, your life will not be enriched in any way by watching this, spend the three hours out enjoying the sunshine or talking to your friends and family or something instead...

I don't think i could write a title.....

The Godfather... 3 Oscars... NONONONONONONONONO!!!!!!! This film (And its others) Is THE worst piece of rubbish i have ever endured!I feel that it was an insult to my backside who was forced to grow carbuncles under the weight of such mafia slush. the acting is terrible, the premise is horrible and the time is awful. They made more than 1? yes. were any of them good (and i'm not biased, i always watch things till the end to get a full view... i even watched the others although i hated it) no.. all awful, all too long, need i say more?My view -10/10

How Did I Not See This Sooner?!

This was one of those films I was 'not allowed to stay up for' when I was much younger, but having received the DVD box set for Xmas, I watched all three on consecutive nights. What talent! What a story! What cinematography! How did I miss this in my teens and twenties??For me, one of the greatest surprises was having a look at early performances of great talent that started careers... Robert Duvall was already well-known, and this cinched him. James Caan - one of my favourites -and this showed me why - again. Pacino -I admit, I was never tha impressed, and wondered what the fuss was about....then I saw 'The Godfather'. So many have tried to follow it - so few succeeded.Fantastic stuff. Deserves to be where it is in cinema history.

PERFECTION!

Francis Ford Coppola's epic film is nothing short of perfection. The film follows pretty closely to Mario Puzo's superb novel with a few minor changes. A lot of times, the first act of the long story tends to drag (STAR WARS: EPISODE I, HARRY POTTER & THE SORCERER'S STONE), but THE GODFATHER flows very smoothly and keeps the watcher interested. The movie begins at the wedding of the Godfather's daughter, Connie. It is here where we meet several of the main characters: Vito Corelone "The Godfather" (Marlon Brando), his hot-head middle son, Santino a/k/a Sonny (James Caan), his oldest son, Fredo (the late John Cazale), his youngest son, the innocent Michael (Al Pacino), the Corleone family lawyer, Tom Hagen (Robert Duvall) and Michael's girlfriend, Kay Adams (Diane Keaton).Michael is a World War II hero and a college graduate. He has never been involved with the "family business" until a tragedy occurs and he is thrown in the mix. He then becomes destined to take over the role of "The Godfather" once his father retires from the business. The film basically shows how Michael goes from a good guy to a cold-blooded killer in the course of three hours. He seeks revenge on those who do him and his family wrong and he takes no prisoners. If you have never seen this movie, I highly recommend this and its sequel/prequel THE GODFATHER PART II. (NOTE: To this day, I do not acknowledge THE GODFATHER PART III exists because it is so horrid.)

I can't believe it took me 31 yrs to see this movie!

The Corleone family saga begins with Brando granting (or refusing) the requests of his friends, family, and neighbors during his daughter's wedding. That's just the beginning of the epic saga that put the name Puzo on the map. This is a very graphic depiction of the "family" scene. It marks the end of one's control of a territory and the dawning of a new era when Pacino takes over the "family" business. If you haven't seen this movie, yet, do yourself a favor: don't wait 30 years like I did. Watch it! It was on one of the premium channels the other night and I taped it. I knew it was three hours long and I always thought I would not have the patience to watch it, but I did. In fact, they are showing part two tonight and I am taping that to watch tomorrow night.

Upon finding the Godfather (1972) at #175 on the all time US voters list of the greatest films of all time - I simply laughed...No sign of Godfather II, which is cognitively greater than it's predecessor. Do these people have any critical ability! If The Godfather is, in my humble, in the top ten ever (and I struggle to better it - exception of it's sequel), then I am full of dismay... GII is the best film ever made... Contrast the moment Michael finds that Fredo has betrayed him with the moment DiCaprio & Winslett stand on the bow of the Titanic... no contest methinks. Come on USofA, get a grip... Your current President (George W Bush) exhibits the same lacklustre approach as did the one that bailed out of Cuba in '58. Spineless... Again... Even in your thoughts, USofA - I love the taking the mickey out of the spineless...rob (a fan of Mr Vonnegut)

I guess that this movie is an offer we cant refuse

posted on 12 Aug 2009

I hate gangsters movies, but "The godfather" is a big exception.I always listen about "The godfather", and i always thought that it could be a lost of time. But, in a Sunday, i watch the film. At the marvelous and surprise ending, i say: I cant believe this movie exist."The godfather" talk about Don Corleone, and his blood. How his family enjoy, and the same time they suffer. Besides a great music, the interpretations are incredible. The violence is presented around the whole family, as if it a curse. This movie had a lot of good remembers, because is different story, a story of love, revenge, thrills and surprises."The godfather" is interesting because in each take, in each second it takes you to the drama of this family, and you suffer as them.Definitively, this it is a movie that has certain touch, because the story makes you give curiosity, because we don't know to where arrived this family with this risky business.*sorry, for bad words... well, if there any

the first, and best

At the time of its release, this was the best American movie since "Citizen Kane." "Star Wars" has since exceeded it as a more influential movie, serving as a bridge between "Kane" and the future as did "Kane" between "Birth of a Nation" and the silents. But this is master filmmaking, sure to grip a viewer even on repeated showings.I saw "The Godfather" for the first time in 1973, after turning 18, and it marked the only occasion that I was "carded" at a movie. The dialogue borrows heavily from the book, but what source material! From "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse" to "Leave the gun; take the cannoli," this was inspired stuff. (In fairness, I must admit that Coppola and Puzo took the screenplay for Part II to an even higher level.)Brando's performance secured his place in movie history. Although his on-screen time is limited, he dominates in every frame that he appears. From a simple whisper ("Where's Michael?") on his sickbed to the scene where he peers at an aquarium while Michael conducts family business to the final scene in the garden, Brando becomes Vito Corleone and, like Clark Gable in Rhett Butler, is the only actor one can imagine playing the part so well. The transfer of power between Brando and Pacino in the garden, a scene written by Robert Towne ("Chinatown"), ranks with that in the taxicab between Brando and Rod Steiger in "On the Waterfront" as the most powerful in American cinema. What we have is a cinematic masterpiece, pulsating with excitement until the final scene, when Al Neri shuts the study door on Kay in the kitchen _ Coppola here paying homage to the final scene of "The Searchers," as he would do also in the two sequels.I'm torn between "The Godfather" and "Casablanca" as my favorite movie. Perhaps the difference is that I saw "The Godfather" first, at an impressionable moment of my life. For me, no sequel was necessary. The first look at the Corleone Family remains the best.

Masterpiece

posted on 06 Aug 2009

I think it is the most brilliant film of all time. Perfectly cast and symmetrically structured. The rising of Michael to unwillingly become the Godfather after realizing he's the perfect mix between brother Tom and Sonny, give this film the perfect balance between irony and destiny.

Film mistakes?

posted on 06 Aug 2009

Has anyone found any interesting mistakes in this film? -- I found one were Don Corleone is being moved in the hospital. He moves his hand very quickly when being taken into the new hospital room even though he isn't supposed to be awake. - There are also some time/space inconsistencies in the scene where Michael shoots the police captain, but I've heard they removed in mistake in later versions of the film. Also, some of the lines at the end of the movie with Don and Michael talking in the olive garden seem to be out of order or ad libbed. -- I've heard that there are others. Just Curious - please let me know! :) Thanks! --

Wowzers! Unoriginal?

posted on 31 Jul 2009

I got a laugh from the people who found this film to be unoriginal, lukewarm, or not up to the standards of other mob films or tv shows. "The Godfather" is the grand daddy of them all! Coppola and Puzo practically invented the genre of "mafiosi as Shakespeare". Given how subsequent films and tv shows have run with these themes (even done them to death) most of what you're left with in this film is acting and craftsmanship. But man o man. It doesn't get better. "Shawshenk Redemption", in contrast, was a good installment of the Hallmark Hall of Fame.

One scene of this movie and I have to see it all over again!

This movies keeps surprising me. I have never seen Al Pacino in a better part. Marlon Brando was a legend then already, but only became one for me after this movie. The mix of family-honour, realistic action/ murders and the incredible cast makes this film one of my all-time favorites!

Spectacular! For the older crowd

posted on 25 Jul 2009

`The Godfather' is a spectacular movie, for the older crowd. Between a quotable script, great theme music, and a fabulous main character, this film will keep the viewer wondering. While watching `The Godfather', the viewer may recognize many lines. Some of examples of those could be, ` I'll give ‘em an offer he can't refuse,' or `Take it to the mattresses.' Simply the fact that lines from the movie are well known, proves that this movie is worthy of watching.Throughout the movie, the same music is played over and over, but in different styles. For example, if someone is about to get shot, the music speeds up, and almost gets scary. When a happy time comes, the music gets softer, and more legato. Finally, one of the best things about this movie is the main character. Al Pacino plays Michael, the child of the original Godfather. After his father gets shot in a mob hit, Michael, takes over the family business, and completely changes who from the person he used to be. Al Pacino is very believable in this role.Overall, this reviewer gives this movie a 9 out of 10. It is definitely a movie worth seeing, but leave the kids at their friends, there is more gore than many would like.

incredible

certainly the greatest American film ever if not the greatest films ever. the godfather is one of the things such as the Beatles song 'hey Jude' that you have to watch to the end and is so powerful you have to adjust to the world around you.the acting is very good.and the film has the best final of any movie. the film is deep and thoughtful and never fails to blend drama and sadness with cold violence.each character has a well crafted personality and backstory and the film has a very personal feel like remembering prized family moments. the godfather is a must see and a film every one should watch before they die, that and the sequel.

Francis Ford Coppola's Best

posted on 22 Jul 2009

The Godfather is Francis Ford Coppola's best movie. This movie is a masterpiece. Marlon Brando is good in this and he won an Oscar for his performance. Al Pacino got nominated for an Oscar, James Caan got nominated for an Oscar and Robert Duvall got nominated for an Oscar. I liked the sets, the acting, the script, and the cinematography. This movie is better than Apocalypse Now. I think Francis Ford Coppola should have won an Oscar for Best Director. Least he won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay with Mario Puzo. I own the book The Godfather by Mario Puzo and I read some of it and it is good. This movie is one of the best movies ever made well maybe the exception of Pulp Fiction.

Superior and spectaculour

The Godfather is probably the greatest film of all time. It really is a shame to see people like Star Wars when we have a movie with such class as this. A magnificent script joins with amazing acting from all the stars but mainly from Marlon Brando with his great style of speech which really influenced and inspired most other gangster films to come but this is the best. Anything else is a copy. A story of respect and loyalty within a mafia family. A wondeful master-piece. It really diserved its award for best picture at the academy awards.Every scene is put together very well with great ideas and thinking. Very intellignet lay out and wonderful sketching. Great photography and directions. James Caan in his best work and the same with Al Pacino and Robert Duvall. Talia Shire was very good but a lot better in the 'Rocky' series. The film portrays the true art of film. The real meaning of film. All its aspects are fabulous. A great piece of work with a terrific style. Brilliant and really and truly better than that video game called a film 'Star Wars'. The Godfather will stand out as one of the centurys greatest works.Thank you for the art.

The Godfather: 7/10

posted on 16 Jul 2009

I hate reviewing classic movies, since most have a reputation and I feel like I'm not an actual moviegoer/critic if I don't like the classics or give them a certain rating. Anyway, I finally got to see The Godfather. I was a little disappointed, but I still liked it.In Francis Ford Coppola's Mario Puzo's The Godfather, Al Pacino plays Michael Corleone, son of Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando), a famous family mafia. The film goes through their various escapades as a crime family.I really, really enjoyed watching The Godfather. The almost-three-hour runtime seemed to fly by. I was enthralled by the sincerity of the acting and the horrible true-to-life feel of the film. All of the acting was dead-on, although some of the screaming could have been a little better. With up-and-coming stars at the time such as Al Pacino, how can you go wrong? However, with all movies, they can't be perfect. The film could, or should, have had more plot to it. I know it's supposed to be "a day in the life of" type movie, but if it had been with one adventure for most of the way it would have helped. Also, there were lots of supporting characters who we can't remember about for three hours. If that wasn't enough, all of the characters looked like either tall or fat white men with thick Italian accents, making them hard to understand (and of course I had to rent the VHS version so I couldn't read subtitles). More towards the end, I couldn't tell who was on whose side. The ending could have been trimmed down a little; the last half hour or so seemed to actually be boring and not very exciting. Maybe Coppola put it in there so the movie could have the designation of being "one of those long classics".I was surprised about how little strong language there was for a crime movie like this. I would have guessed all the characters to be swearin' like a sailor, but I was surprised. The amount of blood didn't surprise me, but I commend Coppola for putting so much in.Pacino looked like he does now, minus bags under his eyes. Brando gained about 200 pounds after The Godfather. And, Abe Vigoda looks exactly the same as he did thirty years ago. Yes, that's right. Abe Vigoda is in this movie. Hurray! The Godfather is an entertaining movie that is overrated but still fun to watch as three hours pass.My rating: 7/10Rated R for strong violence, blood, brief nudity, and constant but mainly minor profanity.
