Superb Acting

posted on 31 Aug 2009

This movie has perhaps the best acting in supporting roles that I have ever seen. The way that the guards communicate just by looking at eachother and showing facial expressions is fascinating. Particularly with "Brutal." I dont think there could have been a better cast then what is present in the movie.

A MILE YOU WANT MIND WALKING

Oh my my my, what a excellent story we have weaved. There was not a better movie I have seen this year, coming from me that's a big compliment. I am a big Sci-Fi, Horror film person, but every now and then I will go outside my boundries for a peek at the other side(the things a women will make you do). This time I have to secretly admit I wanted to see this movie and in no way was I disappointed. This movie was brilliantly written and the acting was superb. I whole heartedly had to fight back the tears to keep up my appearance of manlyhood in front of other males in the theatre. I know you've heard this saying before, but if you only see one movie this year, make sure it's this one. Guys bring a handkerchief so you can pretend to be blowing your nose while you wipe up a few tears. YOU'LL LOVE WALKING THIS MILE.

The BEST movie ever made

Before seeing the movie you should read the book. The book in no doubt is better than the movie. They changed a few things but they still get the point across. This book and movie will make YOU question the death penalty

I went home and wrote a poem about The Green Mile.

I had no idea what to expect, but I was so touched by the message of this movie, I went home and wrote a poem about 'the green mile'. Life is a journey for all of us and 'the green mile' is the last road we travel before we die. I found the movie full of wisdom as spoken by the black man (e.g. the injustice in the world and how people hurt other people "it is like cracking glass in my head, I hear it everyday.") Please go see the movie and listen with your heart to the message of good vs evil. I am not a Stephen King fan, but this one is worth the time.

This is not a bad movie

The Green Mile is a very good movie. Tom Hanks does also in this movie, as in many other movies, play very good. I do not like so very many of Stephen King's books/movies, but this is one of the ones I like. I hope that this move will get many Oscars. It's very exiting. I could maybe have given the film 5 stars. But It's not a movie in the Forrest Gump class. The only negative thing in the film is the look at Chrisianity. The movie shows that God punish. That's wrong. But what I want to say is that if you have not seen this movie you MUST do it sometime!

More gold for Darabont

Considering 'The Shawshank Redemption' is one of my all time favorites, I was much looking forward to 'The Green Mile'. I loved the book, and I love Stephen King in general. This adaption is a wonderful followup for screenwriter/director Frank Darabont. The acting is roundabout superb. Particulary good performances from Doug Hutchinson and Michael Clarke Duncan (who got an Oscar nod, well deserved). Tom Hanks is good as usual, as are Barry Pepper and David Morse. The directing is perfect, with some spectacular lighting and cinematography. The theme itself is a sad one, and the movie is a definite tearjerker. It isn't quite as an uplifting movie as Shawshank, because it is much darker. Perhaps the most moving performance of the movie is from Mr. Jingles, the mouse who pays the guards and inmates a few visits here and there. Great job.

Comparison with the book serie

This film is the best movie version of a Stephen King's novel. You may have read 'It', or 'The Tommyknockers' and enjoyed it, and then got disappointed with the movie result. But in the case of 'The green mile', you'll be stuck in your chair, wanting it to start all over again for you to pick up every single moment of this pure success. The emotion of the book is in there, as well as great special effects that are fortunately not too present in this movie based on love and pureness. At last, I'll say that, even if the novels in general are better (in a sense of imagination liberty and content) than the movie version; this one must be seen. That's a Go-Buy-It!

I expected nothing less.

Hmmm...Tom Hanks and Stephen King. Is it any wonder I enjoyed this movie to the utmost possibility? King has the uncanny ability, be he writing horror or not, to create characters like a pro and give them brilliant things to say. His plot is fantastic. As for the movie itself, it is a true piece of art. Very nice special effects for what can effectively be called a "prison drama." Tom Hanks leads an incredible cast, and Michael Clarke Duncan was born for this role. Continue on, Frank Darabont, continue on...

One of the most powerful movies I have ever seen! As good as the book, definitely worth a look-see! You'll laugh, cry and be on the edge of your seat as the mysterious crime stories unfold. I reccommend taking your kids when they get older! Don't pass this one up!

This is one of the best dramas I have seen in a long time. I realize that it is hard not to find comparisons to "Shawshank", but this movie is wonderful in its own right. It is very cathartic, but in a more bittersweet manner than "Shawshank". It is so true that this movie will make a grown man cry! The cast is excellent...for the first time in a while, Tom Hanks' performance is rivaled by the supporting actors (i.e. Michael Clarke Duncan, David Morse) and therefore does not stand out quite as much. Also, it is hard to summarize the movie's plot in one direct sentence. It is based on a Stephen King serial novel and contains several subplots. The story is beautiful and shows us how fragile life is and that doing the right thing often has no reward and can bring pain and loneliness, unfortunately. I promise, you will need to have some Kleenex ready during the movie! I highly recommend it, and I admire that the movie makes us look at our own lives, and how we all walk our own individual Green Miles. Kudos to Stephen King and Frank Darabont...yet another classic!

wow! Unbelievable...ever thought I'd ever cry at the cinema!

This film is fantastic, it is directed extremely well with a great intro into the storyline, which keeps you gripped right until the end credits have rolled. The atmosphere, the emotion and drama is unbeatable. Tom Hanks and Michael Duncan were superb..along with David Morse and all the cast. I can honestly say that I have never shed a tear in a cinema before, I've come close, but this time I was sobbing my heart out in the back row. I was so moved. I can also truthfully say I do not know of another film that has had me gripped the whole way through before, I reccommend this for everyone wanting to see it. I just can't wait for its DVD release, as it will be the perfect addition to my collection. I will definately be going back to the cinema to watch this again. Truly a masterpiece. Definately deserves all the oscars its been nominated for

Who'd have thought I'd shed tears at a Stephen King flick?

When I heard that "The Green Mile" would be turned into a Tom Hanks movie, I groaned outloud and silently cursed the movie industry. Yeesh, all the luck that man has been carrying around in the movies for the last eight years just grates at my nerves. The fact that "The Green Mile" is, in my opinion, the best novel written by King since "Different Seasons," made me all the more antsy but at the same time drew at my curiosity. So I went. Sitting in a dark, crowded theater watching Hanks drawl in a semi-decent Alambama accent for three hours seemed like a smiggen of hell waiting to happen. Honestly, the most I expected was to maybe appreciate the film; I didn't expect to walk out of the theater crying and quietly applauding all the people that worked in and on it. Safe to say, I ate my words.

I have to say, "The Green Mile" is possibly one of the most brilliant films made in 1999/2000 from start to finish. The direction is brilliant, the entire cast give memorable performances all around, and the imagery is so eerily like that mentioned in the novel that it's at times creepy but nothing short of satisfying. What pleased me the most about this movie was it's unexpected faithfulness to the novel itself; no other adaption of a King novel has ever been this close to the book, with the possible exceptions of "Delores Claiborne" and "The Shawshank Redemption."

There are several stand-out performances throughout, such as those by Micheal Jeter (as lovable prisoner Delacroix), Doug Hutchison (as jail guard from hell Percy Wetmore), and a chillingly sinister turn by Sam Rockwell (as resident bad guy Billy the Kid). But the movie itself belongs to Michael Clarke Duncan, who managed to upstage Hanks in his role as the gentle giant John Coffey. Playing simple-minded Coffey, you'd have thought Duncan stepped straight out of the pages of the novel itself. From the moment he steps onscreen, he gains the curiosity and affection of the audience, garnering an ocassional snicker and many tears.

Another thing that surprised me was the magic that surrounded the film. A sequence in which Coffey is in the prison theater watching Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers dancing to "Cheek to Cheek" in the classic Top Hat is among the films sweetest moments. Maybe what makes scenes like that so terrific is that they're not obvious; they're seamless. The expression on Coffey's face as he watched the dancing duo glide across the screen *alone*, beats any 2-hour special effects extraveganza.

Before you see this film, be aware that this isn't King's usual all-out frightfest. Though it does have it's share of violence (including a particularly gruesome electrocution scene), it's sure to make you laugh, cry (A LOT), and cheer on non-stop for Edgecomb and Coffey. A beautifully done picture by Frank Darabont, who managed to surpass his sucess on The Shawshank Redemption. A lovely film, and one of my favorites for years coming. I can only hope The Academy gives this jewel the recognization it deserves.

BEAUTIFUL FILM

This movie has zero innovation - it does nothing new or flashy. However, it will make a grown man cry. Michael Clarke Duncan's performance is sublime. It's a beautiful story beautifully told.

Another Fine Stephen King Adaptation by Frank Darabont

posted on 31 Aug 2009

Many are the weary Stephen King fans when it comes to movies made from his work. Until Frank Darabont came along and brought us The Shawshank Redemption making us believe in the possibility of a good movie stemming from a good book. The Green Mile is no exception. This is the fascinating serial novel brought to living, breathing, vivid life. Spectacular performances by every member of the cast. (Please take note of Michael Clarke Duncan's performance as John Coffey) A note to those who have read my reviews here on Amazon, in my review of The Green Mile: The Complete Serial Novel I mistakenly call the character John Coffey; Paul Coffey(who happens to be an excellent hockey player). The mistake was noted after the review was posted and please understand I was embarassed by that. But life goes on. Back to the movie. The Green Mile is quite lengthy(which will deter some potential viewers) but its length is necessary to tell the story. And what a story it is. A large black man, a little slow upstairs but kind to the soul, is accused and convicted of murdering two little girls. The setting is Florida during the Depression, a time and place brimming with injustices. The story and the movie deal with this with heartwarming sincerity, coming close to being a tearjerker. Being a Stephen King movie the supernatural can't be far behind and John Coffey, who wouldn't hurt a fly, is just full of surprises. A real treat for Stephen King fans and moviegoers in general and one of the best movies to come along in recent years.

Excellent Movie!

I read the book (or should I say series of short stories?) first. I am an avid fan of Stephen King and have usually been disappointed when his books are made into movies. It's mainly due to King's creative imagination and deep characters that are too hard to portray on screen. When I read the Green Mile, I thought it would be an awesome movie and was stoked to see that come true. I was worried as to how the movie could depict such deep character portrayal, and I must say the movie did a good job to create the characters (the book is still better at that). I thought the movie could have followed Edgecombs search for the truth a little bit more rather than just the one scene with Gary Senice (sp?). Overall I was very pleased with the closeness this movie followed to a great King novel and I would say this is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I recommend that you read the book and see the movie to get the full effect, but if you only choose one, it is still a good choice.

Life under fire

The "Green Mile" has to be the only film I have ever seen in 40 years that can make you use every emotion of our lives. Michael Duncan (John Coffey) I wanted to just give the biggest hug I could make. Tom Hanks is great at a dramatic role as ever before. This picture AND the book really moved me. I believe in watching the movie first and then read the book. I want to see a movie raw and not be spoiled by the book. Especially this one. This movie is true to the book most of the time. I believe that this is Tom Hamks most moving film since "Philladelphia". Bring tissue for that one too. The "Green Mile" deserves 10 stars. See it more that once.

A View of Eternity

As a critic want-to-be I can't find enough stars to rate such an awsome movie and series of books. I, who is not a good reader, found that I stay awake at night for hours reliving all that Paul Edgecombe endured at E-Block. I saw the movie first (as it should be) which, reading the books, make the characters come alive. I cry the tears, I feel the pain, feel the hate, feel the heat and I feel the remorse. It gives me a mind to reconsider Capital Punishment. This is definately a go all the way to the Oscars movie. I have seen it twice and will see it again and again. Bring a box of tissue both men and women. Even if you read the 5 series books. Enjoy

In spite of its three-hours-plus duration, I would see this movie again because of the overall SUPERB ACTING! The compassion and human kindness portrayed by some characters, helped to offset the dark side portrayed by others. It provided an opportunity for the viewer to reassess his/her opinion on the controversial issue of capital punishment.

A Beautifully-Acted Epic

posted on 31 Aug 2009

This movie completely justifies the obscene amount of money that Tom Hanks makes nowadays. I saw this with moderately high expectations -- but was absolutely blown away by the brilliant acting performances by the two leads - Michael Clarke Duncan and Tom Hanks. The story - quintessentially Stephen King - takes you on a 3-hour mystical journey. Duncan plays a prisoner on death row who possesses a magical power to heal. Hanks is the prison guard who befriends him. The setting - death row - is dark and eerie with its green hallway and dim, drab cells. Yet, for all its desolation, this setting somehow manages to uplift one. You learn to believe in miracles through the context of the scenes that take place therein. This is a very emotional movie. It is flawlessly directed (by writer-director Frank Darabont of "The Shawshank Redemption) and beautifully acted. I would not recommend it to viewers with a short attention span, for it is a riveting 3 hours long. Fans of Stephen King, however, will absolutely revel in this epic!

Take the journey of The Green Mile

posted on 31 Aug 2009

From the start to the end The Green Mile arouses all the emotions in your body thrusting you into E Block (Death Row) at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. This movie will consume you from beginning to end leaving you breathless as you exit the theater. Frank Darabont masterfully directs this prison tale. You may remember Frank Darabont as the first time director of another prison epic, The Shawshank Redemption. The cinematography in this movie is great, with lush colors it turns the nightmarish death row setting into a beautiful structure of death. It is a pleasure to watch this movie. The Green Mile tells the story of death row in a 1930's prison and the incidents that take place there. It focuses mainly on an inmate named John Coffey who seems to have supernatural powers. You may notice that John Coffey's initials (J.C.) are identical to another influential biblical figure. Coffey is played by Michael Clarke Duncan in a breakout role. He can be seen previously in Armageddon but you will definitely remember him for this role. For most of the movie your not sure if Coffey is innocent or guilty but you suspect that he is innocent. As you discover Coffey's story and learn about his character you follow three other inmates two of which you follow to the electric chair affectionately named "Old Sparky." These electric chair sequences are some of the most harrowing and suspenseful scenes in a long time. I personally could hear my heart pumping during them. The most powerful part of The Green Mile is the acting. Tom Hanks gives his usual brilliant performance that we have come to expect from him but the supporting cast is the best part of the movie. David Morse (Contact,The Negotiator,The Rock) gives an excellent performance as the biggest of the guards named Brutus. Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan,Enemy of the State) also gives a good performance as the smallest of the guards. However Doug Hutchinson gives the best supporting performance as Percy the mean, insensitive guard who often abuses the inmates. The ensemble cast of the guards in The Green Mile have great chemistry together. The actors who play the inmates are also a pleasure to watch. Of course Michael Clarke Duncan (John Coffey) is great but also Graham Greene, Sam Rockwell, and Michael Jeter. Graham Greene plays an Indian who we follow first to the electric chair. He does a great job. Sam Rockwell plays "Wild Bill" your usual troublemaker causing havoc throughout the prison. And the great Michael Jeter plays Eduard Delacroix. Jeter just about steals the show as Delacroix the man we grow to love right as he is sent to "Old Sparky." He is befriended by Mr. Jingles, the infamous mouse who also almost steals the show. Eduard Delacroix's execution is the hardest to watch due to the fact that it is botched and what happens next is unforgettable. Bonnie Hunt is also good as Tom Hanks' wife just trying to comfort her husband. The cast is what makes this movie really live. The dialogue is some of the best of the year. John Coffey's signature line is when he is introduced to someone. He says "Coffey, like the drink except spelled differently." The best line in the movie though is directed at Percy when he is perplexed by what he sees John Coffey do. "This boy's cheese fell off his cracker" is the line said towards Percy. The Green Mile is an extraordinary movie in many cases. It is a movie that deserves attention and deserves to be seen. It is a movie that you will be tempted to see over and over again because you want to take the journey many times. It is a movie you will not soon forget and is a movie you wait all year to see. It is a shame that we had to wait all year to see the movie and take the journey that The Green Mile has to offer. ****(cinematic ecstasy)
