A worthy next chapter but can't stand alone
posted on 27 Aug 2009The great problem with making a seqaul of a film that wasn't planned as a serries is that you have to make it similar enough to show it's a part of the original without being just a re-run. "The grudge 2" does that but it does have it's problems.
Set after the first film Sarah Michelle Gellar movie where we learn a house is so cursed that anyone who crosses the threshhold is doomed. Amber Tamblyn plays her younger sister who is sent to Japan to collect her sister (Gellar)who is in a hospital having had a break down and is accussed of burning down a house. this picks up from where the last movie ends with Gellar in hospital, though the first film implies she is about to die as the credits roll. Tamblyn finds her sister a wreck, in restraints and regularly trying to escape from the hospital's care.
Naturally Tamblyn sets out to see what caused her sisters problems and joins up with a japanese reporter to try and track down the history of the family. This is a success filmwise. instead of just recreating the mistakes made by people in the first film, Tamblyn strikes out in a new direction. The movie has a B and C plot as well. the B plot, harkens back to the original jun on in which school girls enter the haunted house as a prank and as being haunted by the curse afterward. The C plot is set in an apartment house in chicago that seems to be haunted. it is said that when she burned the house Gellar didn't destroy the curse but freed it to spread-but why Chicago? hmmm.
filmwise the sequal follows new ground while still staying true to the original but it really relies on the view to have seen either of the originals to get some of the repeat horror. A great part in the original grudge was gellar being obviously ill at ease in japan, knowing she's an outsider and just trying to get through the subway system. something we probably would all do. also a major problem is Tamblyn, having stammered "do you speak english?" to two nurses when she gets to Japan she quickly seems comfortable taking a long train and bus journey into the wilderness. it breaks some of the fear of being completely isolated that Gellar brought to the first film.
One scene from the b plot that must be mentioned for good acting is when one of the school girls goes to a "love hotel' with her boy friend. She has been coquettish and a flirt but as she waits for him while he showers a serries of emotions play on her face and you realize she's a virgin and scared to death of being in the hotel with her boy friend. it's a case of great direction and excellent acting to watch it run accross her face- excitment, curiousity, fear, exictment etc.
In short the movie is well worth watching if you like Japanese horror AND have seen either the Grudge or Ju-on. If you haven't seen them, get one of those first, then rent this.
Just read it
posted on 12 Aug 2009I suppose writing a critique on a movie usually involves some criticism but come on people. For those of you who haven't seen the movie i suggest you watch with no preconceptions created by these pretentious idiots. Their criticism is even more derivative and predictable than they claim the movie to be...ju-on, ju-on, ju-on...congratulations you've seen a foreign movie, and it sounds really cool to say it was better than an American remake much less a sequel. The fact of the matter is it was creepy as hell without the gore, the drab back-story, and the inane intimacy of character development(in a horror film that is). The grudge as well as this sequel are both cold films which i feel is one of the factors that contributed to the goosebumps. I felt the movie was unrelenting in the chill factor...just don't expect resolution.
The Only Movie I Ever Fell Asleep At
posted on 11 Aug 2009When The original "The Grudge" Came out. It was a shocking very scary experience at the theater. I was jumping in my seat. I saw the original when I was 16, up to that point it was one of the scariest movies I'd ever seen, and I've loved Horror/Scary movies since I was four years old.
I really like Sarah Michelle Gellar. I think she's a great actress and I always like her movies. I was a fan on "Buffy" So, I was excited that she would be in the sequel.
To my disappointment she had about 5 minutes of screen time in "The Grudge 2." I was really looking forward to the sequel. But, I was actually shocked at how bad it turned out to be. I really couldn't believe how terrible it was. It was NOTHING like the original "The Grudge" It lost all of it's spark. Not one part of the whole movie was even remotely frightening. NOT ONE PART.
"The Grudge 2" was the only movie in my entire life where I actually fell asleep in the theater. I never thought the day would come where I would fall asleep in the theater. It was that boring and uninteresting. Unfortunately, I didn't fall asleep for very long. I really tried to like this movie. I wanted to like this movie. But, I just couldn't. There were so many different ways they could have taken the sequel. But, they turned into something that could have gone straight to video.
The Japanese Version of the sequel was much better than this. If you must see it, rent it.
The Grudge 2 was ..hilarious.
posted on 10 Aug 2009I loved The Grudge, so I was excited to see The Grudge 2. What a disappointment. It wasn't scary at all. I thought it was very unrealistic how nobody tried to leave if the little boy was coming out of the wall, or if their father was dead on the floor. No, they just fell on the floor. Oh good, you're safe now. Certain scenes made the whole theater explode in laughter. The movie isn't supposed to be funny, obviously, but it was. If you haven't seen Ju-on, you probably won't understand some scenes in this movie including the taped-up windows, the old man playing peek-a-boo, and when the grudge woman puts her hands on her face. This movie doesn't explain anything. In the Grudge, you only get grudged if you go inside the house (Which is somehow still standing, and you can walk inside anytime if you really want.), but random people are getting grudged in this movie. There are so many things left unanswered. At the end of this movie, I was convinced there was going to be a Grudge 3 because nothing happened. I wasn't scared once, and I was practically crying from laughing so hard.
Crap. Absolute Crap.
posted on 10 Aug 2009The Grudge 2 is possibly - no, make that probably - the worst horror sequel I've seen since Blair Witch 2. In fact, in many ways it was probably worse.Think of all of your played-out horror movie clichés; roll them up in an absolute mess of a plot-line (which is actually three completely separate stories); add a circus of bad actors; and finally, take all of the unrelenting shock and suspense that made The Grudge so great and flush it straight down the toilet, and you have yourself The Grudge 2.I am a huge fan of the horror genre. I have seen hundreds of horror movies, and I believe The Grudge was a modern masterpiece. However, Hollywood definitely got its hands on the sequel, and, as Hollywood tends to do, made what could've been a successful, entertaining and utterly horrifying sequel into a steaming pile of camel poo. Thanks a lot, Hollywood! The worthless plot of this story goes absolutely nowhere, which leaves the viewer feeling like they've lost two hours of their life which they'll never get back. What may become its only redeeming factor is that it obviously left the door wide open for a third installment. Hopefully, when that installment is released, the bumbling idiots in Hollywood will pull their heads out and follow the Ju On series, rather than trying to Americanize a high-quality Japanese achievement. If you loved the first for the same reasons I did, my guess is that you'll hate the sequel. Of course, this is all just my opinion.
Awful, awful, awful, awful, awful, awful....umm....did I say awful?
posted on 08 Aug 2009I literally feel like this movie not only sucked away what seemed like half a day, but also my actual life force. I can't think of a suckier movie in recent memory. I mean, plenty that have come close...*cough* Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning...*cough*, but none quite this bad. The movie itself makes no sense. A single dead Japanese woman and child have the power to spread all over the world? People have died in the grips of powerful rages before, you'd think the Japanese government would have a special defense force for this kind of thing by now. I mean, I see it all the time in anime. And it felt like it went on and on and on. No change in pace, no nothing. Please stop going to the movies and buying DVDs like this. Let Hollywood know we're not going to take it anymore. I might look for this in a bargain bin somewhere just to send it back to the studio in a bag of doody. Seriously, it's not even worth wiping your ass with when you can't find toilet paper. Stay away. Stay far, far away.
I Have a Grudge ... Against Sequels . . . Including This One!
posted on 03 Aug 2009I admit that I had high hopes for this sequel with a 3 storyline arc, the same people responsible for the first Grudge, and Sarah Michelle Gellar and Amber Tamblyn's presence; however, like the other reviewers here I was very disappointed. I did give this film two stars for the very things I mentioned in my opening, but the storyline compromises the first story (even contradicts it in places), the acting is never as good (although competent) as the first movie, and nearly everyone dies at the end making one feel like he or she just wasted 2 hours. There is no real resolution to the story either; just lots of attempts to recapture what was scary in the first film that is less on the repeat.
I normally do not like sequels and The Grudge 2 is the reason why. If you can't continue the storyline (not just repeat it with different people ala Friday the 13th films), or if you can't do something more groundbreaking than the original (consider the Jaws films), then you shouldn't attempt a sequel or prequel at all. Some outstanding sequels that I can recommend are the Alien Quadrilogy films, The Complete Omen Collection, the Scream Trilogy, and lastly (and most cleverly) the The Final Destination Thrill-Ogy films which I think are really awesome sequels where each one can stand alone or as part of the series.
Never watch this film
posted on 02 Aug 2009i don't wanna be rude..but....bullshit is the only word which can explain this movie.I'm really sorry for the money i paid for buying the DVD!!!!!!!!!! the movie is so boring that during watching it you would feel asleep...if you have seen scary movie 4...this movie could make you laugh as hell.... i couldn't stop laughing at scene that the Japanees girl vanished into the mirror...i think the most important problem of this movie is the poor screenplay that can not say its story ....thuogh the movie is totally like the last one... anyway..this is something i offer you..DO not watch this movie
Great Movie!! Beats the first!!
posted on 29 Jul 2009I just saw this at a special screening, and I must say, it beats the first Grudge in every aspect: horror, gore, and more creepier scares. This time they don't try to surprise you with the scares as they did in the first movie, they make sure the audience KNOWS something is going to happen and just keeps you on the edge of your seat. Amber Tamblyn does a great job playing Sarah Michelle Gellar's sister, although Sarah is in the movie, she only makes an appearance for a short period of time (I think she was filming The Return at the time). The horror in this is in no way cheesy or corny like some parts of Grudge had, this is full-on make you jump out of seat and leave the theater horror. I love this movie and can't wait to see it again in theaters.
What where they thinking?
posted on 23 Jul 2009I rented this movie expecting something not better (but not as awful as it turned out to be) than first one... movie that was already bad...The Grudge 2, sets the stage two years later from the first movie. Aubrey (Tamblyn), sister of the Karen (Gellar), who goes all the way to Japan to bring her sister back (after too much time if you ask me). But, as the things get complicated, Aubrey bumps with the curse herself and starts a race against time to stop the curse before it kills her...Then, the curse starts affecting (out of the nowhere until the end of the movie "makes sense" of it on a very lame way) a family in some apartment building on Chicago. The real problem is that the Stephen Susco (writter), tried to mix 3 story lines (I can only make sense of two) in a single linear movie. So you would apply your context and merge the stories together to give it sense. This was the worst mistake he could do... instead he got everyone confused about the storyline (not even first scene makes sense after you end this movie) and applied some rough twists that somehow, changed completely the original story... making a full paradox of the Ju-On legend by switching Kayako's ghostly vendetta for something that made her being cursed from her childhood until the day she died...Side characters (everyone but Tamblyn) act so bad that I believe they couldn't ask for too much when getting paid...The extended version felt better than the cut one, and even so, the deleted scenes made less sense for the movie (thank God they removed them), but one scene... that shouldn't have been removed would have saved a lot of troubles and plot holes (when you finish watching the movie, check "The Passport" to see what I mean)...The alternate ending was bad (another thank God for having it removed), I could compare easily with "An American Hunting" on terms of the worst endings ever removed...In conclusion... get away from this movie, better rent the first one (RENT) and forget about this sequel, it's pointless and it will leave to much to be desired.
One of the best movies!!!
posted on 22 Jul 20091. I can almost gaurente that this movie is going to be wickedly awsome because the first one was.
2.Sarah Michelle Gellar plays really good parts in movies, ecspecially these two.
3. In the first movie to this secquel Sarah Michelle Gellar plays Karen, an american nurse that moves into a house for a few days.
4.Then Karen stats encountering mysterious evil spirits that haunt her.
5. Karen has a boyfriend (Jason Behr)that reads her work and goes looking for her one night. Karen so realizes that he had gone to the house.
6. That night he died.
7. Karen was in the hospital for a while.
8. At the very eng of the movie the grudge comes out of Karen's back/body and thats the sign that there is still something haunting people.
9.Whomever goes into that house Doesn't Come Out!!!!!!!!!!
Good except for the horrible acting.
posted on 21 Jul 2009I did enjoy the movie for the Ghost attack scenes as well as the story in general. I do think the movie had some very poor acting in it. Now the bad acting was obviously not present during the scare scenes but every time any of the characters spoke a line I cringed, especially in the first scene with the 3 school girls. I also found that Amber Tamblyn gave a bad performance. The only performance that didn't suck was Sarah Michelle Gellar. I think the bad performances can be attributed to the language barrier between the Japanese director and the English speaking cast. And here is what bothered me the most about the movie... How is it that a 70 year old Japanese exorcist who has lived in a very rural area of Japan her whole life and has gone quite crazy learn to speak perfect English?
Grudge
posted on 21 Jul 2009I thought that the movie was good and very scary. However, I didn't understand the ending. Did they solve anything? I didn't get how Amber Tamblyn turned into the previous grudge girl. That really didn't make an sense. I may be wrong and stupid and just didn't get it, but neither did any of my friends. It was much scarier than the first one. In fact I jumped many times. I very much encourage that you see it, if you are a fan. If you are not a fan, you probably won't like it. Also, if someone could explain the ending to me that would be great. I probably need to see it again. In fact, I probably will end up seeing at least once more. I hope my comments helped your decision in whether to see this movie.
The Grudge 2
posted on 12 Jul 2009Aubrey *Tamblyn) travels to Japan to bring her sister Karen (Gellar) home after the events of the previous film. While there, she gets drawn into the mystery of the house and, along with a reporter (Chen), goes on a quest to find out the truth behind the ghost Kayoko's anger. Also in Japan, three girls enter the house on a dare, and bring a bit of the grudge out with them. Finally, in America, a distraught girl returns home to an apartment complex, and strange things begin to happen.
All of these stories are related, and come together somewhat unsatisfyingly in this unnecessary sequel to 2004's "The Grudge". The story is weak, and the acting is nothing impressive. The ending almost certainly guarantees another sequel, this time more close to home. Anything creepy from the previews in tame when seen in context, and that means that "The Grudge 2" fails as a horror film. Stay away from this stinker.
NOT A GOOD SEQUEL!
posted on 10 Jul 2009SO WOW, THE GRUDGE GETS TO GO TO ALL OVER THE WORLD TO KILL PEOPLE,(WHO CARES)! PLUS IT HAD THE SAME SCENES FROM "PART ONE" LIKE THE INFAMOUS PART WHEN THE GRUDGE GOES UNDER THE COVER IN THE BED TO GET THE VICTIM! JUST SEEING THAT SAME SCENE TWICE BUT JUST IN ANOTHER MOVIE WAS AWFUL! NO BLOODY KILLING SCENES AT ALL, JUST PEOPLE GETTING PULLED INTO THE GROUND QUICKLY LIKE A LOONEY TOON RABBIT HOLE! I UNDERSTAND THAT THE DIRECTOR IS TRYING HIS HARDEST TO KEEP THE MOVIE ALIVE,BUT IT SHOULD OF JUST ENDED WITH PART ONE! PART ONE WAS GREAT,BUT THIS ONE IS A LITTLE ON THE CORNY SIDE!THE GRUDGE 2 AND THE RING 2 SHOULD OF NEVER BEN MADE! ONLY A 9YR OLD SHOULD BE SCARED BY THIS GARBAGE!
the crap 2 (spoilers)
posted on 09 Jul 2009This movie was horrible and predictable with a horrible second story and no real advancement in the story itself. It's like the studio execs were sitting in their office one day trying to think of a new movie and were unable to come up with something so they decided to make a sequel to a movie that was sub par already. In this craptacular sequel it is now Sarah Michelle Gellar's sister that has to deal with this "curse" and find out what is going on. With her bad acting and predictable story people story dying in the oddest order until she realizes that there is nothing she can do and just gives up (lame). Oh, then the director tries to throw people off with the pulp fiction style of story telling by jumping from story to story trying to make it confusing. Save your money and go see something else...anything else then this POS.

I can't believe, that "Grudge's" sequel was so bad!
posted on 30 Aug 2009I was so excited, when first time I saw "The Grudge". It has some scary scenes with good actors and great effects. Sarah Michelle Gellar is one of my favorite actors, so in original movie, she acts very nice, but the sequel was horrible...Every was so not original, you actually forecast when the grudge shows. Almost every appearances was repeated from original. I don't like Amber Tamblyn, because she's not a good actor. Finally Arielle Kebbel got sad persons role and it was great to her.Ending was misunderstanding. I don't know what happened :( . So, I give to bad sequel a 4.
