posted on 19 Jun 2009The Hard Corps is probably the most boring movie I've ever heard of. You're looking at the movie and saying, hey, this sounds like it's going to be descent. Jean Claude Van Damme, guns, kicks, muscles, all that good stuff. But no, this is garbage. And you're thinking, well, it's a new age movie he played in, give him some slack. But no, it sucks. It sucks dirt from a straw. You want to know why, well, where can I begin? First of a all, the name. The Hard Corps? That is the stupidest name that you could ever come up with! The Hard Corps?! I'm sorry, The Hard Corps?! Okay, now the fight scenes are basically the same as every movie that Van Damme has been doing in the 90's. Brawling, no kicking. Guns, but no originality. That's basically the outline of the whole film. And having Vivica A. Fox in a movie doesn't save it from being the worst direct-to-DVD films of all times. Therefore, The Hard Corps is bad and not worth watching. 3 of out 10.
Not missing anything new
posted on 30 Apr 2009This film just lets itself down towards the end. From the start I thought maybe this one was going to be different and not the same as Vann Damme has been doing for the last 5 years, which has been in most cases disappointing. But these films seem not have the stamina to finish the race, and the plot seems a little hard to swallow. But I do like Vann Damme's idea of moving away from the action, more for the acting but he needs to find the right material or its just a waste of time. In closing quite a lot of things were bad from the make-up to the acting. Vivica A. Fox who did your make-up girl, they need shooting. Your not missing anything new by missing this one.
Sad
posted on 06 Jan 2009Van Damme is clearly too old to be making action films anymore, least of all poorly made STVs like this one. He is barely in the picture as it is. It really is a blaxploitation flick, full of rappers and thugs, and the main action has to do with them. Jean is strictly a sidebar. For what the plot is worth, Jean is a federal convict hired to guard a boxer being targeted by an old nemesis. Jean puts together a special security squad he dubs the Hard Corps. The lovely Vivica A. Fox is wasted as the boxer's sister and Jean's love interest. What a comedown from his late 1980s/1990s theatrical vehicles. Today, he's in the same boat with Segal, churning out subpar actioners for STV consumption. And like Segal, he is playing second fiddle to a bunch of interchangeable rappers and thugs, most of whom couldn't act if a gun was held to their head.
not bad
posted on 29 Nov 2008The movie is not that bad. It's probably one of the best Van Damme did since (the Van Damme mania time). But it doesn't beat the time when he was everywhere. The money is one reason for sure. They are all B-Movies so the money's not in it that much so. But VD does play well and most of the cast too. I do miss the AMAZING VAN DAMME but who knows, maybe he lost it a bit. He's not that young so...I don't know I'm just saying he doesn't fight like BLOODSPORT,KICKBOXER or DOUBLE IMPACT time. The action is more like street fighting, shooting or boxing. There isn't any VD karate extra moves in it so...Don't look for that. He fight but...Streetfighting kinda moves.Give it a try it's still worth watching. I've see a lot worst. Still..I give a 7/10.
Seagal, Snipes, two down one to go VD, Until Death had better be good
posted on 10 Oct 2008STAR RATING: ***** Saturday Night **** Friday Night *** Friday Morning ** Sunday Night * Monday Morning Phillip Sauvage (Jean Claude Van Damme) has served three years fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq and has been left traumatized by some of the events he's witnessed. However now he's been recommended to protect Wayne Barclay (Razaaq Adoti) current world heavyweight boxing champ who's been marked for death by a corrupt rap music mogul he nearly sent to prison for a very long time. After his friend is killed, Phillip sets up a group of young fighters called The Hard Corps to help him in protecting Barclay. But things get complicated when a romance starts to blossom between Phillip and Barclay's luscious sister Tamara (Vivica A Fox) and suspicions start to arise about Phillip's troubled past.I've decided not to bother with any more of Seagal's straight to video monstrosities or any of Snipes's, either. I'll give VD's next effort Until Death a go though as it has an intriguing story and could be a chance for the man from Brussells to show some real unexpected acting talent. He's verging on that in this one, to be fair, and he's got speaking the English language down to a fine art now (but that's hardly what I payed to see now, is it?) All round, in fairness, this is a good deal more admirable and professionally made than anything Seagal's done in the last four or five years. That's something you could say about just about all of VD's DVD films in comparison with his. But that is not to say it's a movie without some very big problems.Although showing marked improvement in other areas, The Hard Corps is a VD movie that lacks a lot of what you really payed to see: namely, decent fights and exciting action. It's also surprisingly overlong, with a running time that should have been cut by at least ten minutes and has an inconsistent villain. Plus the central story of VD recruiting and training the young soldiers to protect Barclay is poorly played out and fails to make much of an impact on the viewer. In fact it doesn't even feel like part of the main story, just a small plot development that's part of the over -written and jumbled script.None of VD's collaborations with director Sheldon Lettich have really been any of my favourites but this just makes earlier efforts like Double Impact and A.W.O.L. seem like the absolute business. ** and a half
Bad
posted on 01 Aug 2008There are so many comments saying how good this movie is, I'm assuming that the people who wrote them were paid. This movie is unbelievably bad. If this movie was an animal it would have been shot and turned into glue. And it would have been sub-standard glue.I have seen bowel actions that were better formed than this 'movie.' The acting is terrible, the plot is laughable and it is really boring. The quality is horrible, the lighting in the moving seems to be supplied by a couple of 9-volt flashlights.People should hire a bodyguard for this movie because I want to kill it.
One of Van Damme's most enjoyable films in years.
posted on 02 Jul 2008There is nothing perfect about this movie, but for what it is, it sure the hell is enjoyable. Van Damme just gets better and better in the acting department and pleases everyone in this one, new fans and old ones. The action scenes are way better then in Second In Command and much more martial arts oriented then Wake of Death, with some more trademark kicks. Vivica A. Fox is sexy and perfect for her role and the story involving a former heavyweight champ who needs security from a rap-mogul/gangster is very fresh considering its new territory for a Van Damme movie. Anyway fan of his or not, I would no doubt check this one out, its a pleaser.
A very good movie! Van Damme is back!!!
posted on 24 Jun 2008The Hard Corps is a very good movie, with a great cast and script. The story is very interesting and Van Damme proves another time, that he is a great actor and fighter. He is in a very good shape in this film and Sheldon Lettich did a great job. The fight scenes are really nice, Van Damme is fighting like a 10 years ago.In my opinion, "In Hell", "Wake of Death", "Second in Command" and "The Hard Corps" were 4 great films. Van Damme is getting back and nobody can stop him now! And now I'm waiting for Til Death and Bloodsport 2. 8/10.
Fighting back...
posted on 24 Jun 2008Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as a special forces guy (you know the type) who is hired as a bodyguard for a world champion boxer, seems that a gangster has put a hit on said boxer, and despite Van Damme's reluctance, Vivica A. Fox convinces him to take on the case. The film I was most reminded of was Blackjack with Dolph Lundgren (Minus the color phobia angle.) and this is because the film features a similar plot line. Jean-Claude Van Damme is in decent form, he excludes a charisma and is in his strong action man role, which has been lacking lately in his later straight to video movies. Alas despite Van Damme's effective work the movie still doesn't work due to the over-edited action sequences and lame camera angles that cut away far too much so we can't get into the action as well. The choreography is certainly decent but the action is too chopped up to be effective. Also Van Damme has a group of other tough guys and gals helping out,so we see more action with them then with Van Damme, which is sort of a letdown. The movie is passable, I mean I wasn't bored with it and despite its routine story and predictability the movie does deliver what it promises. I just wish the movie would've given us more Van Damage and less camera trickery. In the end though it's not one of Van Damme's best. It is in fact a lesser film from Jean-Claude.* * out of 4-(Fair)
are you people nuts!!!!'
posted on 27 May 2008this movie has to be the worst movie van damme has ever made, the acting was horrible , from everyone, specially van damme, after seeing the replicant , in hell, wake of death, i was becoming once again a jean claude van damme fan!! but after viewing this trash!!! yes!!!! trash... i am never watching another van dumb film , i rather see steven seagal movies, at least his acting is much better . but the real surprise here was vivica a. fox , i respected her as an actress, but her performance in this movie showed me that she is washed up, just like van damme. to make it shorter this movie sucks!!!! don't watch it!!!! save your money, this film is trash, please rent something else my rating is 1 out of 10. thanks
A step above generic and a LOT better than Second In Command
posted on 07 May 2008The plot is simple, a soldier returning from Afhganistan becomes a body guard for a well known boxer who is loved by the community he restored, and hated by the man he put behind bars.It begins typically with plot development and whatnot but where other straight to video movies fail this one succeeds, if you give the movie a chance you will feel the difference between this and anything else that has been released recently. The plot has more to it, the action pieces deliver what is expected but it is entertaining none the less and the humor and rap beats thrown in add what is needed to make this movie more entertaining than what i was expecting. treat yourself and get a hold of this for lazy nights where you just want to kick back and see Jean Claude do his best.
good ole H2O...
posted on 12 Mar 2008Alright, opening scene... scenes from Iraq and flashbacks to a guy sitting on a bed somewhere and then to a boxing match. Make no sense? Well it doesn't get much clearer The whole movie is riddled with useless scenes from the 'horrific past' that our protagonist faces... but its useless. The entire feel of 'gangster' is just sad.The lines feel forced and encourages so many stereotypes its not funny. The relationships formed are confusing at best and the scenes seem like they are forced to be what they are... somehow the director has made even the scenes hate themselves.I would equate this movie to someone trying to dance right after having been beaten up with 2 broken legs and being made to do so by gun point. The movie is ridiculous with unfunny jokes, annoying characters and ridiculously unnessesary scenes.
well....this really waisted my time!
posted on 29 Feb 2008what a disappointment this was. Hardly any action. awful fighting scenes, badly filmed. not entertaining at all. you see three kicks and a couple of punches of Van Damme in this movie nothing more. Shooting scenes are also badly timed and very hard to call realistic (eg pointing the gun to another point than where the people get shot). Guess Van Damme has had his best days, ready for retirement. Do not waist your time on this flick! Better watch Stevan Seagul. Also the whole context is not realistic. Van Damme says: 'i need professional as bodyguards'. And than goes to a boxing gym to select them, next day they are bodyguards. Just doesn't make sense. C-movie.
Against all odds of Van Damme flicks, but still not worthless
posted on 13 Feb 2008This is one of Van Damme's most different movies up to date. Why? Because for those who are his crazy fans for "action and adventure" types, it does not fulfill their expectancies. Since my childhood I have been growing up watching his tough and unique action flicks. But still then I will rate this movie above average. Yes, before buying the CD I highly expected of getting entertained. But it did not score as expected. Here Van Damme plays Phillip Sauvage, an American soldier who suffers from stress disorder caused after his operation against Iraq and Afghanistan. But its shown only in the starting time, and later on sometime as sparking off his memory. His role later on turns out as a bodyguard for boxing champion Barclay, whom he even competes in boxing.Anyway The Hard Corps may not be a typical Van Damme movie, but here he proved that the word 'action' can be converted to 'acting skill' by his cool natural and real-like performances. By this he moves one step higher to his acting career. The movie has its maturity, standard and quality. But very disappointing issue is that, the whole focus in the movie mainly goes to Razaaq Adoti (as Wayne Barclay) rather than Van Damme. And this is the minus point of the movie, as it disappoints huge Van Damme fans.Boxing is a common element almost in every Van Damme's flicks and the same is involved here too. He is an ex-American soldier but dares to compete with a world heavyweight boxing champion, Barclay. This is Sheldon Lettich's fifth directorial venture with Van Damme which is another source of attraction. Its so because after watching his previous four hits everyone would certainly pick up the fifth one. And I did it too in my case. Ultimately, its a slow and decelerating movie but still neither a bad nor worthless to watch.
not bad
posted on 16 Jan 2008Like wake of the death and the replicant this movie shows a more mature JVC, and that is a wise move since the guy is well in his 40's after all. With this film JVC gets a decent budget and decent production values and a chance to put some more flesh in his character.. however that is about all that is really nice about this film. In many ways this film reminds me of the flicks of Steven Seagall doing buddy buddy with some rap star and like steven, jean claude also feels a bit misplaced in the setting of rap music and undressed women, this is actually felt by his acting in some scenes... I don't have the feeling he really believed or enjoyed himself all that much. There is very little hand to hand combat in this film and a very low amount of action, you can actually feel your ass telling you this flick really takes 110 minutes to tell its story. There isn't much to tell about the story that is interesting and the constant use of flashbacks is becoming irritating around halfway ( yeah we know the guy has problems from the war..yeah we get the hint) But all in all I found it a nice enough movie..little fast forward here and there but still a pleasant time waster. Lets be honest, I saw vandamme for the very first time with bloodsport when all the action heroes were still around. Now in 2006 he is basically the only one left even trying to deliver some decent movies and that makes me very forgiving.
Average.
posted on 29 Dec 2007I was once a big fan of Van Damme, especially in his low budget period in the 80's and early 90's that brought us cheap, but good, action fest's like Bloodsport, KickBoxer and Lionheart. In modern times, VD's latest film is with the Lionheart director Sheldon Lettich. The result more KittenHeart, than Lionheart, but nonetheless, it could have been worse.Actually what surprised me more than anything is how much Van Damme has come on as an actor. Dare I say he was quite good here. Also Vivica Fox was just plain hot! She really stood out for me in Kill Bill Vol 1, and here she adds real star power. The biggest problem is a lack of budgetary impact. The action just in no way stands out. Action movies without decent action, just can't work. Sadly this has some mundane action scenes. There's still a couple of neat fights, but once you've seen Tony Jaa unleashing 460degree somersaults then this old cowboy way of shooting and cutting a fight kind of pales in comparison.Still the cast make the rest of the film watchable, and Van Damn, albeit tired looking, impresses. It's also not as bad as the latest Seagal or Norris (My idol, oh what have you done!) films.
very entertaining.
posted on 13 Dec 2007You now what? This movie was very entertaining. After deciding to lay of Van Dammes movies for a while,Due to several disappointment's,I thought i'd give this one a chance. And to my surprise it was very good,I enjoyed Van Dammes tough battle shock character and his acting was very good.It was interesting to see Vivia a.fox play along with van damme,There was plenty of action and an interesting story,Although i must admit that i thought the 'rappers' were overplayed a little and the costumes a bit typical and far fetched. But what the hey? It was entertaining, very different for jean claude.Plus there is also a very exciting unexpected brutal fight with jean clade doing what he does best.not bad at all jcvd.
Only bother if you actually hate yourself..
posted on 29 Aug 2007Only one word can sum this movie up properly - ridiculous.I found more meaning in any given Pauly Shore movie. The acting can only be described as wooden, the script has more cheese than a dairy farm, and Van Moron is way past his prime...if he ever had one, that is. Every single line of the script was one cliché after another, and there was no originality what so ever. The support cast, although they were clearly trying their very best, missed the mark completely. However, they cannot be blamed for the atrocious waste of time this movie turned out to be. I suppose that it is extremely hard work to attempt to take yourself seriously as an actor when you're given a project like 'The Hard Corps' to work on. Each character is a ridiculous stereotype, the kind that you only find in made for TV movies or anything 'starring' Van Damme.I do admit that this film will definitely appeal to the mindless, brain dead members of society who actually think that slow-mo fighting is the epitome of cool, but for the enthusiastic film fans out there who enjoy at least a tiny bit of intellectual stimulation - give it a miss.In conclusion: DON'T BOTHER.
Not enough action
posted on 25 Aug 2007The Hard Corps is about a PTSD special forces frenchie (Van Damme) that is hired to protect an ex heavy weight champ who is in deep s***t with a local gangsta punkie. Frenchie's flashbacks get in the way of some of the storyline and take too long to get to the point. Vivica is PHAT and plays relatively well although here eyes don't exactly respond properly to the dialog. Some good fight sequences. Some failed emotional ploys as frenchie and the ex-champ exchange sob stories to bond late in the film as they find out each other are OK people. Decent camera work. Predictable plot. Nice final 10 minute fighting and shoot em up. Van Damme is getting too old for these movies, and what's with the huge knot on his forehead?

Van Damme Seems To Be Working On His Acting Than Martial Arts
posted on 17 Jul 2009This movie was a good flick and one to be proud of it was an unusual role for van damme to play. He seemed to be more interested in the story of the movie than the movie itself and we have seen less martial arts of his later films. If you watch second in command and wake of death you will notice that he truly wants to be an actor now then a martial artist. This movie should have got a cinema release it was that good maybe this might be a new start to an old genre of films this movie will be one for my collection along with hard target maximum risk and the order. So for those those who want to see this movie go get it out from your local rental store its great. I will look forward to van damme's next flick.
