Quintessential Bruce Willis - tough guy wins in the end.

posted on 31 Aug 2009

I have watched this movie at least a dozen times. I never gettired of Bruce telling the bad guy, "Hit me again and I'll killyou." Then he does it. If you're not a Bruce fan (Die Hard,Fifth Element, etc.), this movie may not be for you. For the rest of us, it's definitely a winner. A lot of action and some low-key humor. This is not great acting, great writing, great character development or great directing - just great entertainment.

It's just pure FUN!

posted on 21 Aug 2009

I don't really know why this movie kicked my away like that. I mean there is no original plot, the directing isn't ground braking and the action sequences are good but we are used to that since movies like Lethal Weapon. So what was so special? I think it's a bit of everything. Especially the buddy story of our two heros is the best one i have ever saw and their dialog is the funniest ever made, and no Blade, no Vin Diesel as Riddick in Pitch Black can keep up to his coolness. I've never had so much fun waiting for the next conversation in an action-flick. The acting of Bruce and Damon is very good. The bad guy is also played very well by Taylor Negron. He is not too crazed like a lot other bad guys and he has style. The main thing what makes that movie so entertaining is the atmosphere, i can't really tell you why, it just fits and makes you watch the movie without ANY boring minute. If you want to see great acting, good action, funny dialogs and just have a hell of a time, you HAVE to see this one. I think you won't be disappointed.10/10 and then some...

The most funny action movie I ever saw

posted on 13 Jul 2009

OK, the movie is old but I loved it back then and now bought the DVD. The Last Boyscout is the most funny action movie I ever saw. Bruce Willis is great in here, playing that lowlife detective that doesn't seem to care about anything but a good smoke. Also Willis' daughter Darian in the movie is quite fun because of the language she uses. Great movie, a must see IMO if you like a good action-humor combination.

Chinatown with Jokes???

posted on 13 Jun 2009

OK, the one line summary may be going to far! - but The Last Boy Scout, very loosely, is similar (in parts of story) to Roman Polanski's Chinatown. There are small consistencies between the two and I would make an educated guess that the screenwriters used Chinatown (a brilliant movie) as the basis of this story! Our main character, the scum-bag detective just trying to make a living, even takes a similar name of a LA bridge used in Chinatown - Hallenbeck/HollenbeckHowever, the Last Boy Scout is a breath of fresh air in the genre of action films. I would never argue that it's strays from the stereo-typical action movie plot, big explosions, twisted evil bad guys and of course the good guys winning in the grand finale, but in Last Boy Scout the partnership between Willis (who I am no fan of) and Wayans gives the film a truly healthy chemistry and atmosphere. It looks like that both our screen hero's enjoyed making this film and transported the classic one liner humour, we have the pleasure of seeing on screen, off screen also. The first time I watched this movie, I didn't enjoy it! Then (after a friend recommended) on second viewing, I started to see the fun in the movie. The performances aren't great, but neither are they bad. At the end of the day Willis was typically Willis for that period of his acting career! The enjoyment for me is the one liners and story that's gels all the humour together, this is one of the funniest films I have seen in terms of one lines. "....we're being beaten up by the inventor of scrabble"The direction from Tony Scott is no less than what you expect to see in one of his films and the performances of, the annoying little brat Darian, played by Danielle Harris and bad guy Milo, add enjoyable ingredients to the film. There are plot holes aplenty and the purest will rate this at below par, but on the surface its an enjoyable action film with bags of humour.

the best action film ever

posted on 21 May 2009

this is the best action film ever!!!!!! Even though it is the best action film it is also very funny. Bruce Willis and Damon wyanes are an awesome team. But, the movie is pretty vulgar (but thats one of the many things that makes it good). It has violence and a lot (a whole lot) of swearing. Joe (Willis) and his wife swear at each other all the time and even when they are saying there sorry to one another. If, thats not enough his 13-year old kid says every dirty word in the book. The main plot of the movie is a guy named shelley, an owner of a pro football team, and his crew are going to bribe senators to legalize sports gambling. But, they are afraid Senator Bainer won't vote for it, and are going to frame Joe (Willis)for his his murder. Jimmy (Wayans)comes in when they murder his girlfriend. He was a pro football player but got kicked out for gambling. A must see movie!!!!! Another great Tony Scott movie is True Romance.

The sky is blue, the water is wet, this movie rocks

"The Last Boy Scout" is one of those movies I've catched like a hundred times on TV, and every single time I've watched it and enjoyed it even more than the last time. It´s a great 90´s flick with lots of action, and sarcastic dialogue. If you like Bruce Willis Playing a really tough guy with an attitude that loves to do the right thing, this movie is for you.Willis plays this type of characters great, Joe Hallenbeck (Willis' character) is pretty similar to John McLane (Willis' character in Die Hard). Plus this time he has a sidekick, Jimmy Dix (Wayans' character).***SPOILERS AHEAD***Basically the plot is about a scum bag detective who's trying to save the life of the man who ruined his career, and avenge the death of the guy that was having sex with his wife. Not that you care, but my favorite part is when some thugs kidnap Joe, and he's like all cool and asks one of the thugs for a cigarette, he hands him the pack and Joe pulls one, then he asks for a light, and the thug says "yeah why not?" and when he's about to light Joe's cigarette, he punches him, then Hallenbeck spits some blood and says "I'm sorry, I dropped my cigarette, can I have another one?" both thugs are like "what's wrong with this guy?" the same guy hands him his pack again just when Joe says "I need a light, touch me again and I'll kill you" - "here you go" says the thug, and punches Joe again and gets a laugh, just when out of nowhere Joe stands up and punches that dude's nose into his brain killing him, leans down for the lighter and calmly says "Told ya".If you have seen the movie you know what I mean, and if you haven't, and like what you just read, let me tell you, the movie is full of stuff like that.

Not too bad

It really amazes me how low this rating is. Granted I am also amazed by how high the rating of Hudson Hawk is, but that is neither here nor there. This movie is pretty good. It will never win any awards, or be in anyone's top 10 lists, but it is still a good action flick. The dialogue is witty. I personally like the puppet Joke. hey, its no Die hard, but it is still very good for an action movie.

Another good Willis Action Hero

posted on 29 Jan 2009

Bruce Willis plays Jo Hallenbeck a private investigator struggling to sort out his relationships (not far of the character he plays in Die Hard).Assigned to protect Halle Berry, to the discontent of her boyfriend (Damon Wayans) Willis finds himself teaming up with Wayans after she is murdered, to discover the motives and bring the bad guys to justice.Slick gags and a fine story make this another successful adventure for Willis as the all action, all kidding good guy.Packed with action, and conspiracy this is worth a watch. Not quite as good as Die Hard, but close.8/10

Don't listen to the critics

posted on 21 Jan 2009

It's funny how every critic sees this movie as an all-out attack against women, when every female I know that saw this absolutely loved it. What the critics fail to realize is that when you watch a movie, you are drawn into that movie's world. These two men exist in the sleazy underbelly of L.A., where men are portrayed just as badly as women (did everyone forget how Marcone treated Halle Berry like garbage, so she left him and he ended up killing her?). Is that a favorable light? No. Everyone in this movie has an ulterior motive, usually for their own benefit. During the 90's, these are the heroes we are treated to: a drunken private eye who hates himself and a drug-abusing football player who seems to be waiting for death. Everyone seems to have forgotten the 90's version of 'redemption' at the end. . .No spoilers, but any action fan (or student of the human psyche) should watch this film.

Excellent product

The movie is awesome, and although the DVD doesnt come with many extras, I didnt expect it to, so no problem there. One of Mr Willis' finest movies, in my opinion.

The Last Boy Scout is without a doubt one of the greatest action movies ever made. There is nothing a good action film needs that isn't woven into Tony Scott's vision of Shane Black's screenplay. We have shootouts.... lots and lots of shootouts. We have Bruce Willis. We have football. We have some beautiful women at our disposal. There are some fast cars. There are drugs. And the profanity-laden dialog is so well-written that virtually the entire script can be read in the memorable quotes section of this site. Our story, though completely preposterous, has some real depth. We have multi-dimensional characters and we are taken on quite a ride with them as the action unfolds. Bruce Willis plays a burned out private investigator who helps a disgraced former pro football player solve the murder of his girlfriend. Before our story ends, we have a dirty US senator, a greedy football team owner, and about a hundred seedy henchmen thrown into the mix. Things move so quickly that only towards the end does one of our characters actually speak a line that sums up how ridiculous it all is. Damon Wayans, who plays the former football star gives Willis some sobering insight. He points out that Willis must be one of the dumbest people alive. He is not only trying to save the life of the man who ruined his career, but also trying to avenge the death of the man who was f*#king his wife! But somehow, we the audience care about the outcome, and getting there couldn't be more fun.The film has dated fairly well up to this point. Being as though it came out in 1991, you can still see a high top fade on a black character or two. The football uniforms have changed a little, too, but these are minor things that take nothing away from the enjoyment of the story. Water is still wet, the sky is still blue, and this is still one hell of a movie...and then some!!! This film scores a perfect 10 of 10 stars. It couldn't have been made any better. So sayeth the Hound.

They don't make 'em like this anymore...THEY SHOULD!!!

Bruce Willis stars as Joe Hallenbeck, a private detective that used to be a highly decorated Secret Service agent whose brilliant career ended after conflict with US Senator Calvin Baynard (Chelcie Ross). Hallenbeck is now forced to work the sleaziest and lowest-paid jobs in order to support his increasingly estranged family as well as his own developing gambling and boozing habits. His latest customer is Cory (Hale Berry), a striper who hires his services of bodyguard. Soon after that she is gunned down by professional assassins and Hallenbeck starts investigating her murder, reluctantly taking Cory's boyfriend Jimmy Dix (Damon Wayans), a former football star who was kicked out of the League because of his gambling and substance abuse. THE LAST BOY SCOUT is a very entertaining film that brought many great talents. Tony Scott (TOP GUN) as the director did a more than adequate job. This was the first sfilm of his (before TRUE ROMANCE) that I truly enjoyed from beginning to end. Willis here does something more than to reprise his John MacLane role of DIE HARD - his Joe Hallenbeck is less perfect, more human and therefore more sympathetic to the audience. Damon Wayans is also very good and avoids the danger of being second fiddle to Willis (something that seems to happen quite often in movies these days). In short, THE LAST BOY SCOUT is one of the best action films of our time. They don't make them like this any more and they should. It's ultra violent and ultra cool. This (and DIE HARD) are the reasons we love Bruce Willis (though I sometimes think he forgets this). Come on Bruce, how about a sequel or a DIE HARD 4 (I heard it's coming).

A big, loud, stupid piece of garbage

The Last Boy Scout is the kind of movie indie fans point to when they bemoan the lack of quality in Hollywood films. It's a gratuitously violent, utterly offensive and sexist pile of trash that shows why Tony Scott should not be allowed to direct another film for the rest of his life (when Top Gun is the finest film you've ever done, it says volumes about your talent or lack thereof). Bruce Willis does his usual tough guy routine, Damon Wayans shows his usual bad taste in picking projects and the whole sordid mess reeks of idiocy from top to bottom. If you like foul mouthed kids, women portrayed as either philaderers or crackheads, lots of car crashes, lots of things blowing up and bodies flying around and tons and tons of gratuitous foul language with no intelligent dialogue to go along with it, then The Last Boy Scout is for you. If, however, you have even a little bit of taste, stay as far away from this clinker as you can.

Prepare for everything to kick off...

This is essentially "Lethal Weapon" with Bruce Willis substituting for Mel Gibson, but since I always pondered what it would be like if John McClane and Mr. Riggs swapped identities, I guess this movie neatly encapsulates half my answer. It is good. Profane and straightforwardly so, for sure, but very good indeed at going about its business.Instinctively I feel that there is everything in here a hardcore action fan could want. Pulsating music, Bruce Willis as the hungover but determined underdog, a smart-mouthed sidekick and plenty of sharply witty one-liners to complement the chaos. If you're a sensitive soul or someone who likes their movies to run at a quiet and leisurely pace, then this is one to avoid. Otherwise, have a ball. Excess has rarely been so much fun.

Good, brainless actioner

posted on 25 Oct 2008

Violent thriller, firmly in Lethal Weapon mode as the two mismatched leads overcome their differences to foil a villain's plotting. Bruce is in laconic form as a bitter private detective who hates his life and seemingly everyone in it. When he's set up by a former friend (who has also been sleeping with his wife), and fails to protect the life of Wayans' girlfriend (an all-too short role for Halle Berry), the scene is set for explosions, gunfights and general mayhem. It's good enough fun in its nineties brainless action movie way, and Bruce gets to make some decent quips as he dead-pans his way through the bad guys. There's just nothing very special or memorable on offer.

Love This Movie! Was A High School Favorite Of Mine!

posted on 07 Oct 2008

I saw this movie three times in the theater with a buddy of mine when we were still in high school. Yes, Three Times! And it got better each time I saw it. Before too long, I could recite every line spoken by Bruce Willis in the movie because at one point, Willis was my hero. I even copied his hairstyle and mannerisms, without getting busted, of course. This movie had more action and humor in it for the time. Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans were a poor man's version of Mel Gibson and Danny Glover of the "Lethal Weapon" saga. And nothing could stop these guys to be the heroes of the moment! To me, I found "The Last Boy Scout" an excellent, Hilario's adventure from start to finish. In fact, I loved it so much the first time, I refused to take a bathroom break during the final 30 minutes of the film because I feared I would miss a great action scene or so. What's missing about "The Last Boy Scout", sadly to tell you, is a sequel. I hoped and prayed that it would come to be in the future. But it never materialized or any news came through. A real bummer because the ending left the door wide open for a "Last Boy Scout Part 2". But I definitely do not want a sequel with different actors playing Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans' roles should there be one. These guys kicked Major League Ass! You Can't Miss This One By Any Means, Buddy!

A great action film that tries to repeat "Lethal Weapon"

Bruce Willis is in "Die Hard" mode on this one, the film has him as a private detective who appears washed up, he is soon contacted by his pal who has a case that he would rather Willis pursue, involving a stripper(Halle Berry)who might be involved in some shady dealings, his watchful eye attracts the attention of her boyfriend(Damon Wayans)who is suspicious of Willis, she is soon killed & they team up to find out who is behind it, this film is somewhat vulger in that it shows the worst in people, we learn that Willis was a highly decorated Secret Service Agent who foiled an assassination attempt that somehow ended his career, his assault on a senator that was beating a street walker didn't help either, Wayons was a football hero who was banned because of gambling, we learn these guys past & realize that were not always washed up. Critics say this film trashes women, are they watching the same movie? Willis comes home to discover his wife with his pal, although it does not respect women in some scenes, it does however convey Willis' love for his wife to a point of forgiveness, Wayons grief about the loss of Berry is seen with a tear in his eye, as they get closer they discover that the owner of the football team that Wayons played for is attempting to legalize gambling by attempting to bribe the senator that Willis had a run in with, their pursuit has the owner's stooge trying to taunt Willis in many funny & memorable scenes, the one-liners that Willis throws back is often typical Willis, there is a neat chase scene as well as the ultimate showdown between them & the owner that is quite satisfying, not to mention Willis & Milo(stooge), a great film for those seeking high octane action as well as Willis' sarcasm!

Bruce Willis, Ultimate Toughguy, This is "Essential"

For One, those that whine about, being demoralizing towards women, please, as men, we all know women can be the ultimate evil, maneaters, I mean his wife cheats on him, with his boss, that's some saddistic evilness if I've ever heard it, he handles it so well, besides forget this line? " I wish I Still didn't love my wife" he still did after all she did to him,and when wayons told the football player, to let the girl up, he didn't so wayans, mashed him in the nose with a football, seriously cool, this is a very unique film, seriously how many Sports-Action Films, are there? - Willis is "Soooo" Cool in this Film, it Should be Illegal, he's just the ultimate toughguy like I Said, aside from of Course, Joe Pesci, Sorry bruce, your amongst my favorite actors, but you aren't a wiseguy, yet, maybe sometime, see this movie, I give it my highest recomendation, this is the sleeper hit of the 90's, wayans is a great actor, and deserves more pub, in this side of the entertainment industry, these two play marvelous off each other, it's the ultimate buddy movie, I prefer this "FAR" Over Lethal Weapon Series, and I Dig them as well, Willis is One Cool Cat, See this Film, Nuff Said..
