What better time for a heist than in the fog of war.

PLOT SUMMARY

In a daring attempt to end the war by Christmas, Winston Churchill and the British High Command hatch an extraordinary plan - Operation Market Garden. 35,000 British troops are dropped behind enemy lines in German occupied Holland. In the midst of the largest airborne invasion in history, one small unit of men, codename "Matchbox" has it's own agenda. When Matchbox are shot down short of their landing zone, the odds of their success seem hopeless. Seven very different British soldiers find themselves separated from the Allied invasion, on a collision course with three renegade German soldiers who also want to lay claim to the horde.

You have go to be kidding

Watching this movie is a bit like eating cardboard. You can do it, but what is the point, no flavour and no nutrition. The problems are vast, but it comes down to one thing, there is no real story. Sure it is an interesting caper...Nazi treasure in Holland that several different people are after. But the problem is that you don't get into the motivation of some of them, and certain parties really don't contribute anything to the caper. There is no suspense, action is as pretty boring. The characters don't develop and there is no relationship between any of them.My advice, is if you want to kill a script editor and get away with it, just lock them in a room with this movie and a gun. There is so much potential in the movie that any decent script editor will kill themselves after watching this movie.

An exciting movie I thought similar to "Guns of Nararone"

An exciting movie I thought similar to "Guns of Nararone" but with a more complex plot. The choice of actors and actresses I thought was excellent and though I cannot remember them all by name they seem to fit there parts exactly. From the dour Scots soldier with the scar on his face to the perfectly turned out SS Major, Laurence Fox I believe, son of Edward Fox? The script was well written with spatterings of humor interjected which I feel added to the overall flow of the film. The initial fight scene when the glider landed was excellent and went on for a good few minutes. I also enjoyed when the German Fighter plane, was it a Messerschmit? , attacked them, some heroism from the medic. I was not disappointed and enjoyed watching this film. Can I recommend it to others? Mmmm, depends if you want a nice enjoyable couple of hours then yes. If you want something like Vietnam movie, appocalipse now style, then no.

Convoluted plot leads to whacked-out finale, was Madsen drinking on set?

posted on 25 Mar 2009

This is really something tough to follow, and it all is presented in a rather pointless manner to start with. There is some big treasure that a whole bunch of folks want to get their hands on, and it's all set in Holland during WW2, which makes for obvious good guy/bad guy models. The first half is just a conglomeration of who all is after this treasure without any real justification as to why. Mostly pretty convoluted and real hard going. Lots of nice scenery, Romania makes a great WW2 setting, as it's probably changed little since 1945. If you can tough out the first 2/3 of this, the finale is pretty interesting and well-done, with 5 different groups going after the treasure. Michael Madsen seems off the ball here. It really seems like he'd been drinking on the set and is buzzed in a couple of scenes, plus he has either a bad toupee or bad hair-dye job. He tries some kind of John Wayne-Patton combo army officer with not much success. Should have forgotten this paycheck. And someone should have told the writer and director that the audience wasn't in on the story sessions, so we can't assume story lines we don't know that aren't shown or well-told.

When did you realize this movie would be horrible?

posted on 13 Feb 2009

For me it was when Michael Madsen made his first appearance, probably fresh from the set of the mega-hit Bloodrayne sporting a look that could best be described as a biker dressed in uniform. This movie is a 6/10 only because it isn't boring. Horrible acting by most of them and Billy Zane must have been reading the 0's on his paycheck rather than the script cause he was the worst. Oddly though his is the first Canadian character in a long time that talks fairly authentically, at least for a Midwestern. Only problem is his character is from Ontario so thats like giving a southerner a New York accent. The movie constantly reminds us he is Canadian by him saying "Eh" nonstop. His character has nothing but one liner jokes I had expected this movie to be a serious war movie ala "The Great Raid" but it could be confused for a TV movie. This movie started off OK but then decided the Nazis were too evil so turned them into good guys I swear! How sad is it when a war movie loses the courage to paint bad guys and makes them all likable (even the greedy fat guy).I suppose the entire cast and crew voted for this 9.1/10 rating cause no way would anyone vote that after seeing this.

What a waste of time!

Turned it of 3/4 of the way through as the plot was lame and it goes nowhere fast. Some well known actors in there but the plot line was so drawn out it was boring and the greatest actors couldn't save it! The film had a lack of direction and a so-so script to boot. The stunts were OK but the images they portrayed were totally unbelievable. For instance 2 German officers broke through a US checkpoint and got away, then they were targetted by air in a small Jeep which was subsequently bombed from above, not once but twice and this was in a heavily wooded area! You find yourself often thinking AS IF! Wouldn't recommend it, it turned out to be cheesy, lame and totally boring.

Sad

This was sad. The plot & apparently interesting characters made me hope for a Kelly's Heroes redux but instead ended up with something of a Bad News Bores. All the accents were horrible, be they German, Canadian, or some British varieties. The plot assembled a complex finale that was not only impossible to follow but it looks like it was impossible to shoot as well! Neither was it clear what everyone's motivations were so you had to just put your faith in the director & screenwriter but without any reward.Interesting characters: the mysterious British paratrooper, the Canadian pilot (he had potential), the "dutch" partisans, and the pair of German ne'er-do-wells. But as in some Greek tragedy, they're left to flounder by the gods.Operation Market Garden did exist. It was smart to put that event as a backdrop but difficult for the producers ($$) to convincingly place Operation Matchbox in this context - apart from the special effects involved in the gliders (I hope people know that this actually happened). As a result, the collection of oddball soldiers and this plot needed to work harder than they did to make this film shine. Sadly, nothing came through. What I liked is that many characters were not black & white - something that reflects true wartime conditions when the very best & worst in men & women comes out. Regardless, this was supposed to be an entertaining film, not what it ended up being. Some would question why I would see or review such a film. I do believe in diamonds in the rough and look for charm, lucidity, and originality but not at the expense of wasting my time.

Really not that bad for such a low budget production.

I'm sure that if this movie was being made by a bunch of amateur kids, people would be raving and hyping about this movie. This movie is with all respect also made by a bunch of amateurs but has the bad luck that this movie is taken more serious because of all the well known actors involved and the fact that this isn't a made-for-TV movie.Honestly, did everyone expect another "Saving Private Ryan" or something? For what it is, a low budget fun and light WW II production, it's a fairly good movie that most definitely serves its purpose. It seemed like they at first attempted to make the movie as a serious one but when they figured out it didn't worked out because of budget reasons, no doubt, they decided to give the movie a more light and entertaining approach. You really know that a movie is low budget when it constantly relies on real archive footage for some of the establishing shots and action sequences. The movie feels and looks cheaply made but still the movie works out just fine as an entertaining enough little movie. The humor and entertainment don't always work out well because well..it just feels weird at times but nevertheless this movie is a perfect light one to kill some time with, without making a real lasting impression but it serves its purpose well enough, as long as your expectations aren't too high. The concept of the movie is good (though not original) but still it doesn't really work out in the story. Real problem with the story is that it focuses on too many group of people, the British who are looking for the 'treasure', a couple of rouge-Nazi's who are looking for the 'treasure' and the Americans who are looking for the treasure. The one distracts from the other and it also makes it harder to figure out who all of the characters are, what their intentions are and who the real main characters/heroes of the movie are. The characters are just too formulaic and they lack proper development. Other than that the story really isn't that poorly written, though its obviously not written by one of the greatest experienced or talented persons, which also makes the story flow not always well enough and make it confusing to follow at parts.Amazing how many good and well known actors actually are in this movie. Obviously the concept of the movie grabbed their attention but too bad for them that the end result wasn't as good as the movie its premise. Billy Zane plays the main character, though he definitely isn't given enough screen time to let his talent shine. Michael Madsen seemed to be in this movie just for the fun of it and he plays a typical cowboy-American army commander. He goes over-the-top with his role and he seemed to have fun while doing so. Too bad that the movie felt the need to put in some female characters. I'm sorry to say but female characters and a movies such as this have never been the greatest combination. Added to that, their roles seem totally redundant, since their real purpose remains unclear.A good enough light little WW II production to kill some time with.6/10

Never judge a film by its cover...

What an awful shame ... with a cast like this and and a basically sound overall plot this movie should be a good watch, but this movie fails to hit the mark - it's films like this that put a downer on the British film industry. The film completely fails to build any character empathy until far too late and there appears to be whole chunks of key story line left on the cutting room floor and they've thrown in some inappropriate music where they probably couldn't afford a proper score. In places the acting was not up to mark that some of these actors have previously made. Poor accents with low budget special effects and scenery also disappoint - I had to watch the film twice just to make sure I hadn't got it wrong!Kelly's Heros does a much better job of the WWII bank robbery story with the bonus of Clint and Donald!

Rubbish

posted on 24 Sep 2008

Bad acting, Bad accents, Bad dialogue. Terrible music the score is suppose to accompany the film but the bar brawl 80s electric guitar grates against you're very soul. I turned it of when the SS officer in full uniform runs through a British platoon to get to a truck and gets away with it just after he says to his side kick we will use the artillery as cover, because artillery good for that. Stupid film that try's to by putting in real footage in the hope of paying homage but the hole film seems to be taking the Mickey out of it. It's such a shame because with today's special effects they could make a great WW2 film as special after Band of Brothers think of all the different places the battles took place.

Terrible movie

Amazing that money is still being spent on making such rubbish. Full of clichés and one-liners, it is one of the cheapest WW2 movies i've seen. Build a farmhouse out of a heap of timber, use the leftovers to glue a tower together with a propeller on it so that it vaguely resembles a windmill and... presto, we are in Holland! Take a Russian Antonov biplane, delete the top wing, glue a pair of (bicyclechain driven?) engines on the wings and put it on pontoons... a nazi seaplane! Life can be so simple. Let some men in a mixture of uniforms run trough a deserted forest making a lot of noise. And whatever happens, whoever shoots who, make sure the black ss uniforms stay in pristine condition... who's funding this?

Low budget, TV movie feel, but despite that it's not all bad

posted on 17 Aug 2008

I picked this up on DVD during one of those "it's cheap, what the heck" moments you sometimes have when out shopping. The premise is an interesting one, although not one that fully delivers. The acting - hmmm, that ranges from good and convincing, to over the top and not that good at all. But at least it tried, and it does have some good moments - I'm undecided about the use of stock footage (I guess I associate it with "we had no money")... There's quite a few reviewers giving this one or two stars, but it depends on your benchmarks - personally if you gave me the option of watching this or "White Chicks", I'd be taking this every time - at least it has some ambition - and while it's not particularly good, it's not particularly bad either - catch it on TV sometime!

Entertaining Film

posted on 22 Jun 2008

There was plenty of action in this film with various military forces fighting with and against each other all headed in the same direction, a Dutch farm with a strange Wind Mill. If this sounds confusing, it is mainly because the story can be very foggy at times. The main thing to remember that the Nazi's stole very valuable treasures during WW II and this so called war also has a big robbery with plenty of people wanting to get a share of the loot. There is some girls who make an excellent soup for the Germans and you will laugh went you see what the girls put into the wonderful soup. WOW ! There is some romantic scenes, but very brief and performed in that so called windmill. This film has plenty of comedy and it does entertain you for awhile and then the entire film goes Flat on the Spot.

Simply awful

posted on 12 Jun 2008

This film was nothing short of dreadful. In all respects. The acting, the score, the CGI, the setting. The only positive thing I find, is the idea. It is a great idea to hash on, especially if you include the German point of view. But all the rest is just terrible. Especially when a German fighter ( that looked an awful lot like an American P-47) chased them across a field. After having seen that hero-moment, I would have thought that the medic would have done something more useful at the flying boat. The less said about Michael Madsen's role the better. Only the bit at the end in the museum made me smile slightly. For the rest, I thought it a complete waste of time. Please do not pay more than a quid or two, or €2,50 or $4 on this title. It is only to show how a film should not be made.

excellent action comedy

This was a fantastic movie. I was caught by surprise when I hired it. It is not a serious war movie - it's a story about 'one hell of a war Jack' as the American General in the movie (who looked like Macarther) said. When a group of British soldiers land over Europe in WW2 only one of them know their 'top secret' mission. Soon the British realise there's Germans everywhere, including two Germans hiding from the the German army and SS. The Americans arrive on the scene. As the truth of a priceless treasure hidden in a farm house occupied by two women is revealed all groups are tempted. When the British put on German uniforms and the two Germans put on American uniforms and practise the American accent it's really excellent. When a Britain in German uniform comes face to face with a German in an American uniform things could come to a face off - but the the Britain said "it's alright I'm really British Intelligence - come with me soldier" .. the German in American uniform says "yes Sir'...and is then directed onto the plane escaping with all the treasure. The ending is a big surprise - so don't miss it. Billy Zane is laid back and crash lands all his planes and who cares about his accent...I didn't. The British group is made up of really interesting and varied personalities...and my sister and I loved the guy who thought he looked like Clarke Gable (?). The German SS uniforms are definitely not to be missed - and the Americans - well in this movie you realise why you love America - as one of the Germans said "just think cowboy."

Don't Waste Your Rental Money!

This is the kind of movie that leaves you sad. Sad for all the beginning actors who hoped this was going to be their big break. Oh, this is so not that movie. If you have any knowledge at all of WWII, you will find much more to ridicule than enjoy during this film. All the stereotypes are here, right down to the Aryan Nazi leader in polished jack boots and bad lighting. There is no character development, or character explanation, or character monologue in a mirror while shaving, to even explain why you should care which side comes out on top. Heck, for the lazy war movie guy, there's not even a bare breast, although there is cleavage, and some more poorly lit hosiery. If you like to find inaccuracies in movies, you might eke out your rental fee. The spliced-in footage from the era was interesting but incorrect for the scene (gliders in the movie, no gliders in the footage.) Uniforms and equipment were odd lots. Possibly the worst aspect was the score, which ranged from a dopey Yankee Doodle whenever the good guys came around, to ELECTRIC guitars during a chase scene, to a really annoying spatter of notes every time a particular house was shown. Repeatedly. In case you had dozed off and couldn't tell where the guys were.OK, was there anything good in this film? Hmm. Some explosions. Pretty colors. I hate to be completely disgusted, but I can't let anyone else watch this movie without warning you. It's two hours you can never get back.

Went to the preview screening on 8th Sept and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening.A well constructed plot, with three groups trying to get their hands on looted Dutch treasure: the Germans, who want to ship it back to Berlin before the allied invasion pushes too far; the British, who want to keep it in custody until the war is over; and the renegade Germans, who want it for themselves. Nicely paced throughout, with the plot revealing itself as the film progresses.Excellent, over the top, performance from Michael Madsen with a nice swipe at US foreign policy - shooting at anything that moves without knowing why.The locations are good and the occasional use of actual archive footage is a nice touch, giving the film an authentic feel.According to Carnaby, they are still working on a distribution deal. Based on what I saw, this shouldn't be too difficult to get.Go & see it when it comes out.

After seeing 2 different trailers for the film before going to see the finished result,i thought i had worked out the basic storyline/plot,however i quickly realised that there was more to this film than meets the eye with twists and turns along the wayThe acting is excellent with strong performances from all of the cast,i thought Laurence fox(as SS major Kessler)was a cold and sinister character, which fitted in very well with the storyline.Billy zane played a heroic glider pilot,Michael madsen has a surprisingly big part(about 20 minutes)as a gun-ho American.Nick moran's character provided most of the laughs, whilst Tommy flanaghan played a stereotypical scot(always drunk!).even David ginola whilst not having many lines was very impressive.Neil newbon played a corporal with a hidden agenda, whose character expands as the story unfolds. The action runs along at a furious pace, and has a good amount of humour which got a few laughs during the film.I thought this was an excellent action film which will appeal to both males and females(put it this way,my wife is not keen on war films, and she enjoyed this film due to the storyline/comedy moments of the film)Even if i had'nt invested in this film i would go and see it again as it had a great storyline/action/acting/comedy and i thought the uniforms/vehicles and props were superbenjoy

I have to admit, I quit watching this movie after about 15 minutes or so. And this comes from a guy who sat through "Hell Ride"! It was blatantly obvious that there was no way the filmmakers were going to be able to redeem the big pile of cow dung they had churned out so far.Everything from the script, the actors, the cinematography, the editing, and not to mention the laughably bad visual effects is just deplorable. The movie starts off with one meaningless scene with ze Nazis, quickly moving on to one where we're in a plane with the jolly good Allies. From what I can recall, everyone has a different accent, beautifully topped off with an officer whose accent I really can't place (is he South African? Scottish? English? Kiwi?). Zip boom bang, we're in the middle of a firefight with trained soldiers ducking behind flimsy bushes as to shield themselves from ze Nazi's machine gun fire.By this stage, the game Klondike on my ipod was far more intriguing than this movie. Then again, I'd rather watch a colonoscopy than another second of The Last Drop again.Exactly when in the process did they discover that there was no way of salvaging this shipwreck of a movie? I would've loved to be in that meeting! Avoid this movie at all costs! See Kelly's Heroes (1970) instead, if you want a solid WWII gold heist movie!

Clever, fun movie.

I picked this flick up on a whim when I found it in the video store. I'd never heard of it, but the synopsis seemed interesting. When I started the movie I was expecting a sort-of serious-minded Kelly's Heroes meets Saving Private Ryan type of flick. I was rather surprised to find a reasonably well written film, with a cast of distinct, likable characters more akin to Hollywood westerns than the current crop of hyper-grim war movies. The script turned out to be more of a black comedy than anything else, with a clever, sandpaper-dry wit of the kind that brings out a few real laughs and plenty of chuckles. This underlying irreverent vibe, coupled with relatively gore-less combat (I can't believe the film got an "R" for violence) gives the proceedings a definite Retro feel, much like the military adventure films of the 50's and 60's. If you enjoy that type of movie, then give this little gem a try, you won't be disappointed.

Misfire of a War Movie

posted on 11 Nov 2007

If you want to see a humorous movie about the hijinks of an odd group of characters looking to enrich themselves during a WWII battle, see Kelly's Heroes, instead of this movie. The Last Drop tries for humor and misses... or misfires. On the plus side, the movie flows fairly quickly and the action sequences are decent. There is a plot which might be interesting if some other pieces had fallen into place. However, the script is weak and the acting is wooden. There is a very inauthentic feel to the movie, from haircuts to background music. The last 20 minutes are somewhat confusing and in some ways, leave huge gaps of logic. All in all, not an utterly horrible movie, but a premise done much better in Kelly's Heroes.
