dusty books and a pile of dusty acting
posted on 08 Aug 2009big budget(ish) and minor stars. felt sorry for bob newheart acting in this drivel must need the money to retire to Florida!. the funny bit's wern't funny. the plot couldn't have been believed even if it were written by god himself on stone tablet. the acting was diabolical especially from kyle mcclachlan, who can actually act he must need the money for his own production or something. noah wyle stank. the hot eye candy was a dog and pathetic at acting. the script and dialogue was awful as were the set pieces.. a total waste of 1 hour 45 minutes.. want the same experience but feel less cheated i suggest you put your head in a gas oven for that length of time but make sure the gas is off first.
An tribute film, with a lack of unoriginality (but that's OK)
posted on 27 Jul 2009For fans of B-movies, this film pays tribute to everything under the sun and camps it up. I could see elements of Stargate, Indiana Jones, Lost World and all those pulp 50's action flics set in faraway places. The effects work and predictability is forgivable because it is B grade film-making at its "worst," which is an interesting down-step when considering Devlin is well remembered for his work in ID4, Godzilla and Stargate (a huge step up when compared to this TV movie). But I have to wonder why The Librarian can't be developed with at least some original twist. In that regard, I have to wonder which came first, the cartoons Jacob Two-Two and Read or Die series (TV and OVA) or this movie. In the former, Jacob gets recruited by librarians who are more than what they seem to be. They too have an underground HQ, complete with high-tech gadgetry (no archaeological themes tho'). There is also a globe-trotting secret agent with a messenger (Agent Intrepid) who is a hamster in a ball that freely runs around the neighbourhood (and anywhere else). For the R.O.D. series, it featured covert organizations who operates under the guise of "libraries." More specifically, the British Library Force and DIET (Japan's metropolitan library in Shinjoku) operates like a super-spy (if not super powered) agency. The plot in the TV series to R.O.D. is similar; retrieve a disassembled series of books in order to bring back a greater power (and world domination).Essentially, it's to say this made-for-TV movie, The Library : Quest for the Spear is not something new. Even it's music is familiar and Joseph De Luca knows how to take what's best from those tunes and do his own variation. All-in-all, despite the visible flaws, this film can be enjoyable as long as the viewer does not have high expectations.
I would watch a series based on this
posted on 17 Jul 2009Poss spoilers***********I found this very entertaining and worth the watch. In comparison to the normal made for TV movies this movie rocks! It was much more fun than the promos let on. An adventure movie with a drop of romantic comedy and some great sub-level jokes. It works on multiple levels. TNT's second airing is on now in the background. I left it on because I like the ambiance while I surf. My kids liked it. I liked it.If TNT did a series I would watch it, If the next movie in this series was theatrical I would go see it and I will Likely buy any related DVD that gets released. A nerd hero...I like it I'd like to know what the library is a search on google for metropolitan library says its in Ohio? Anyone know any details?
Pretty Entertaining.
posted on 15 Jul 2009I found this on Sky One one night and thought I might as well watch it and most people judge it pretty harshly but I mean the movie doesn't even take itself that seriously so you might as well judge it as a comedy/adventure or something, if you see it on TV you might as well watch it cos its a fun movie with some funny moments. When watching it you might as well think of it as a spoof of movies such as Indiana Jones or National Treasure. The actors are good specially Noah Wyle who plays the nerdy forced into action hero really well. The bad guys are really corny which really just adds to the fun. I'm pretty sure this is meant to be a kids movie but if your a bored adult like I was then its entertaining enough to watch!
Good
posted on 17 Jun 2009Okay, for a TV movie it was EXCELLENT! But thats TV movie perspective. It has SO many funny moments which made me laugh out laugh. It was like Indiana Jones, The Mummy, and National Treasure combined. Mostly Indiana just because some of the banter and boobie traps reminded me heavily of Raiders of the Lost Ark. The cast was great with the exception of the bad guy played by Kyle Maclachlan. The special effects are incredible and the fight scenes are pretty good. Bob Newart did a great job as well as Noah Wyle. Overall this movie was very enjoyable. The only bad thing was its cheesy moments. It was basically 60% Funny moments 15% Cheesy Moments and 35% Action/Adventure.
Just Fun.
posted on 15 Jun 2009I saw this movie yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised. I expected a schlocky corny adventure pic..and yes it was corny, but a good corny. It was like a good "Romancing the Stone", though nowhere as timeless as Indiana Jones. It was just a fun adventure. I'd recommend it as a party movie, as you don't have to concentrate at all to watch it! The characters where believable, and you were willing to overlook certain plot holes to root for the good guys, and boo the bad guys. There were certain scenes that really had nothing to do with the plot, and that really jarred the flow of the movie... Overall, just fun. Nothing deep, just fun!
Okay waste of an afternoon or evening...
posted on 03 Jun 2009A fun if very derivative movie detailing the growth of Noah Wyle from a permanent student (22 degrees, 30, still in school, lives with Mom) to a Librarian entrusted with the protection of important artifacts throughout history. "The Librarian" tries to be "Raiders of the Lost Ark" or "The Mummy" but doesn't have nearly the story, characters, depth, or humor of either.Poor Kelly Hu is wasted as a set piece. Kyle Maclachlan plays a passable villain. Jane Curtain stands out as a "straight man" in her interview scene and few interjections."The Librarian" is an okay waste of an afternoon or evening, but certainly not memorable. 4/10
Kids movie rated 15?
posted on 20 May 2009Kid's adventure in the style of Young Sherlock Holmes, but without anyone for the kids to identify with. I really wonder what the target demographics were... possibly immature college students, I guess. The effects were pretty horrible, the computer graphics were ugly and stuck out like a sore thumb. I can't believe they're actually proud of them in the "behind the scenes" interview... (Gorges galore!) Predictable storyline without any real depth. Kid's stuff, as said. Also, not too ashamed to admit stealing lots from the Indiana Jones movies. Female lead is a dead ringer for Lara Croft (Sonya Walger).Only for those who have a crush on Noah Wyle. Kyle MacLachlan and Olympia Dukakis only has a couple of minutes in the movie. Overall, terrible direction and over-acting. I'm totally dumbfounded by the age rating of 15. One guy gets stabbed by the Spear of Destiny(TM), otherwise it seems very appropriate for 7 year old rating.
brainy geek takes "librarian" job, action & hijinks ensue
posted on 06 May 2009The most charitable interpretation I can give is that this movie was intended as a pastiche of other action/adventure movies, but somewhere along the line the satire was misunderstood and removed. What's left is a highly predictable review of scenes, plot elements, and sometimes even dialog borrowed from other movies. The characters are one-dimensional, the plot laughable, and blue-screen backdrops intrusive. What it does have is trainwreck appeal--it's so horrible that it's difficult to look away. Were it possible to give negative ratings, I would.
i loved it!!!!
posted on 30 Apr 2009This film was really entertaining, thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. Noah Wyle, I think, is perfect, as is Bob Newhart. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously; it plays off many different types of comedy from irony to slapstick; well directed; well written; and Noah Wyle's performance was superb. All the other actors/actresses did a good job as well. It's a movie that doesn't make you think, but will make you want to; the comedy is top-notch, as are the dramatic moments.A 9 out of 10 from the outlaw.
Entertaining Adventure
posted on 01 Mar 2009The thirty year old nerd professional college student Flynn Carsen (Noah Wyle) has twenty-two graduation courses; lives with his mother and has no girlfriend. When his Professor Harris (Mario Ivan Martinez) releases him from his class and asks Flynn to find a job and face the real world, Flynn receives an invitation for an interview in the public librarian for the position of librarian. He succeeds and is hires, and finds a secret brotherhood that protects Excalibur, Pandora Box and other treasures of mankind. When a magic spear is stolen by the evil Serpent organization, Flynn is assigned to travel to Amazonas to retrieve a hidden part of the magic object. He teams-up and is helped by the sexy bodyguard Nicole No one (Sonya Walger) and together they face dangerous situations chased by the Serpent's agents."The Librarian: Quest for the Spear" is an entertaining adventure that follows the non-stop action style of Indiana Jones. The clumsy Flynn is very funny and shows a great chemistry with the athletic and gorgeous Nicole. Now I intend to watch the sequels of this enjoyable story. My vote is seven.Title (Brazil): "O Guardião Em Busca da Lança Sagrada" ("The Guardian Quest for the Sacred Spear")
Not quite Indiana Jones...
posted on 11 Feb 2009At first, I could not decide if this movie is slightly better or much worse than any Ernest movie. This one is a comedy adventure which does not take itself seriously -- which we can only hope. If you are not looking for Matrix-style action or Shakespearean acting (or dialog for that matter), then you can actually enjoy this movie. The visuals are fantastic, as well as the scenery. Money well spent on locale, props and special effects. The supporting cast is hilariously funny ("I understand Thorazine comes in vanilla now" by Jane Curtin's character), and well chosen for the picture. The history stays somewhat in shape if you believe in such things as the Bermuda Triangle as an accurate part of reality. But this movie is not meant to be totally accurate to the core. I can not feel much for the main character. Granted, the overacting seems to be on purpose, if not totally overdrawn. Wyle succeeds in his portrayal of the eternal (history) student who is incapable of actually working for a living. Sad as it is, this is where his acting capabilities seem to end, asides from presenting the impeccable hero-smile and nuisance character. The story drags in the first act. Remember movie laws? You have to sell your story in the first 10 minutes, a very crucial element. We wait about 20 minutes until the main thread happens -- the mystical spear (important artifact) is stolen. The action picks up from here, and if you did not change the channel you should remain in your seat. You get the usual ingredients: Helping, beautiful opposite-sex character that just won't show affection towards the hero, an evil villain and his lesser evil sidekicks, helping "friends" that waited hundreds of years for the hero's quest, the list continues. This movie does not try too hard to be another Indiana Jones rip-off (you may disagree here). Ever heard of Zak McKracken And The Alien Mindbenders (classic Lucasarts game)? Look it up, the story has uncanny similarities of slapstick humor, and even Wyle's character reminds me of Zak.LoDuca manages to amaze me. His musical queues are nice and original, but many times too overdrawn as well -- maybe intended. I leave the criticism of Director/Producer to others. Suffice it to say that I did not expect much from the folks responsible for ID4, Godzilla, Star Gate, or Eight Legged Freaks. The movie is still easy on the eye (I do not mean brain). You can see the plot happening a mile in advance. But there are still plenty of laughs ahead, which sparingly but nicely distract from all the humbug and _un_reality. If you are a nit-picker, go and be happy with "1776". If you need action a la Tomb Raider, you won't find it here. This is a family movie without the blood'n'gore (ok, some minor), a decent but not exceptional story (not by a long shot), and the usual cliffhanger ending -- wait for part 2 if the ratings were decent? Now, should I feel the urge to become a librarian? Is this movie paid for by the National Library Organization? Bah, Good clean fun, but not too Walt Disney.
My Thoughts (possible spoilers)
posted on 30 Jan 2009I saw similarities in the film to other films, but enjoyed Noah in the character. Him as a bookworm and not some swashbuckling dude was nice to see. Bob Newhart back in the acting field again was grand. I grew up watching him and loved his show. Jane Curtain back on the screen as the interviewer brought back memories of her as a news anchor on SNL, the early years. I was kinda surprised to see Kyle as the Villain. He wasn't who I had in mind, but he does tend to play off beat characters. I sat back and laughed as well as cringed at times over things said or did in the film, but on the whole I enjoyed it. I did see a few things that were left hanging in the plot lines, but would like to see a second film on Flynn maybe to tie them up. The dating issue of Flynn. Who are the Brotherhood? (I don't want to say too much in case someone hasn't seen it yet.) Maybe not a 10, but a laugh at 8.
Derivative, yes -- and that's part of the fun
posted on 25 Dec 2008Was this a pilot? It felt like it, and if so, hey, we could do worse than have a show like this on the air. It included elements from a lot of movies and a whole lot of CGI, so it was almost a melding of a movie and a video game. It was pretty, it was fun, Noah Wyle showed an aptitude for comedy and if the characters were stock, they were well done. And Bob Newhart and Jane Curtin? Perfect! Sure, it didn't have a lot of depth, but it was escape entertainment, not literary drama. The lead is a brain (a very nice role model to offer the kiddies) and part of the fun is seeing if you pick up the literary/mythological allusions before they're explained (admittedly not hard, but if they were to continue this story, increasing obscurity would be expected. Curious viewers will end up researching all sorts of things they never learned in school.) If you liked _Sky Captain_, this should be right up your alley. The humor may not be subtle nor original, but it's enjoyable. Good actors make for nice touches, even when their characters are one-dimensional. Considering the quality and thrust of a lot of successful TV shows now (Paris Hilton? Fear Factor?), a rousing story with old fashioned chills and thrills should not be rejected because it isn't sufficiently challenging. Sometimes, folks just want to chill out and watch a flick. It leaves you smiling, and there are nice touches here and there. There's a place for meringue in our film diets, as well as more serious fare.
Enjoyable Fantasy with heart warming parts
posted on 15 Dec 2008My wife and I enjoyed this movie. I found the acting well done. To inject a light hearted whit into an 'Indiana Jones'/ 'National Treasures' like adventure provided a good night of television viewing after a hard day at work. Many of the reviews were harsh and if you are a serious movie critic you may not enjoy this movie, but for those of us who enjoy fun entertaining movies, I think you will like this one. The biggest weaknesses in the movie are the gaps in the plot line. Flynn has this 'Sherlock Holmes' ability with people, but where did it develop from. Judson mentions at the end that he was a Librarian, but there was no portrait or detail on how long a librarian serves or how they retire. There are many unanswered questions that leave gaps in the plot line and in character development, yet overall I enjoyed the concept and premise.
the monks were awesome
posted on 01 Dec 2008This was a perfect family movie my nine and ten year old loved and my wife and i agree. The scene with the monks was so real. the head monks assistant should followed the sword till the very end and becomes like Flynn's asst. And I truly believe he should make the sequel. The reality that all these thing looked so real all the equipment in the Library. Bob kicked some ass he looks good for an elder statesman. TNT is finally putting on what we Americans want for real fun entertainment that make you want to forget the evening news. I have followed the movie of Marc Roskin and Dean Devlan since Godzilla, id4, patriot, eight legged freaks, lap dancer. I think this is the way to go and with an actor as beloved by women and men like Noah you could get even 2 more sequels out of this
I am a Master of Library Science
posted on 25 Nov 2008I have a Master's degree in Library Science, and I would like to say that I spent 2 years of my life learning how to stamp books. I cannot believe the insensitivity of one of your reviewers who seems to believe that the duties of a Library Scientist entails more than the simple hand/eye coordination of a bear with opposable thumbs. Stamping books is very hard for me. The Librarian was terrible except for the scene where Kyle MacLachlan was really old and Laura Palmer whispered in his ear who the killer was. I can't wait until next week to find out. Now, if you will excuse me, I have books to stamp. Yes. That's right I'm stamping books. It's very hard for me.
One for under 10's without HD TV.
posted on 30 Oct 2008A disappointing transition from the small screen for Noah Wyle. Although he didn't let himself down with his acting, playing a slightly more knowledgeable Dr John Carter - but without the appeal to the ladies, was never going to challenge our protagonist. Even the script was fine, including comedy, romance and adventure....which ultimately must have been the reason for Noah to accept the part; Genius Indiana Jones seeks stolen Biblical Relic from evil predecessor to save world. What more do you want?..Indiana Jones -GOOD, fashionable Biblical Relic -GOOD, save the world plot - GOOD. Realistic production and set-Goo...NO....rubbish! I found all the cheap sets and over indulgence on computer generated backgrounds far to distracting to follow film as keenly as deserved, I'm sure even Noah himself was cringing into his popcorn at the premiere. Obviously budget had an impact on this production, but some imagination would have been refreshing, and less of a kop out. Overall, one for the kids, and if keen on good production, steer clear. A definite missed opportunity for a good film.
A most depressing film...
posted on 28 Oct 2008This is possibly the worst film to ever be made.In fact, it is the worst material ever made. This film is so depressingly bad, it made me weep after wards at how badly I had wasted my time. My back had already been aching from having to pick it out of the lowest shelf in the movie rental store, and my hand was shaking from the effort of having to put the disc into the DVD player. And then came the film. I wanted so badly to run away screaming, but the shock had taken the breath out of me, and my feet had fallen asleep from this dreadful film. It had no excitement, no enthusiasm, no NOTHING! It must have been a disgrace for the actors, let alone the director and producers. This movie was as fun as a badger nibbling on my toes.Even as the film played, I wanted to destroy this memory any way possible. But there will be no turning back from this. This is why children cry; why dogs lick themselves; why the rivers run downhill instead of uphill. Oh, oh, the effort just to write this warning! Please, take heed of me, DON'T WASTE FIVE DOLLARS FOR THIS FILM!!!

Doofus on the loose!
posted on 14 Aug 2009That would be Noah Wyle, who plays a 30-something year old man who still lives with his mother and has never had a job before in his life. He has spent 16 years in college and has well over 20 college degrees but still that isn't enough for him. One day, one of his professor's advises him to get a job and when Wyle's character gets home he receives a magical letter in the mail, inviting him to come and interview for the position of a librarian at the Metropolitan public library (which is some sort of secret society that houses originals of most of all the legendary artifacts you probably have ever heard of, for example: Excalibur, the goose that laid the golden egg (and yes it's still alive), Pandora's box, The Holy Grail etc. etc.). Out of what looks to be thousands of applicants, Wyle's Flynn miraculously gets the job and within 36 hours of his assignment, an artifact which he must now go on a mission in the Amazon jungle to recover is stolen. Sonya Walger, Bob Newhart, Kyle MacLachlan, Kelly Hu, Olympia Dukakis, David Dayan Fisher and Jane Curtin all co-star in this made for TV movie!
