PLOT SUMMARY

Morgana, sister of Ursula, almost steals the baby Melody from her parents, Ariel and Eric. To protect Melody, she's told never to enter the ocean, but by her 12th birthday, she's been swimming there for years. She discovers the magic locket that was to be her christening gift, which makes her visible to Morgana. Morgana tempts her by offering her fondest wish, to turn her into a mermaid; however, to remain a mermaid, she'll have to steal the magic trident from King Triton (who, unknown to her, is her grandfather). Meanwhile, all the sea creatures are searching for her. Along the way, she joins up with comic relief sidekicks Tip (a penguin) and Dash (a walrus). When she returns with the trident, Morgana's evil nature is revealed, and there is a massive battle of good and evil.

Return to the Sea? Why bother?

posted on 03 Aug 2009

Okay, as a long time Disney fan, I really -hate- direct-to-video Disney sequels. Walt HIMSELF didn't believe in them. He believed in "AND THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER" being the end of it. But this one...REALLY ticked the taco. There were so many ripoffs of other Disney films in this, it wasn't funny. Quick summary, if you don't already know...: Melody, the daughter of Ariel and Prince Eric, is born. Ursula's sister, Morganna (who basically looks like Ursula, if she were to dye herself green and go on the Ally Macbeal starvation diet) shows up and, after trying to do the newborn tyke in, and failing, prophesizes doom for the characters. After that ordeal, Ariel goes into a lapse of being like her father, and refuses to tell Melody about her mermaid heritage, and later on, forbids her to go near the sea. Well surprise surprise. Melody finds out, being the stubborn brat she is, and runs away, then makes a deal with Morgana to become a mermaid, in exchange for something. (Gee does THAT sound familiar?) She becomes one, but in her half of the bargain, has to retrieve her granddaddy's Trident and bring it back to the sea witch. While doing THIS, she runs into a couple of outcast animals, a penguin and a walrus named Timon and Pumb--huh? wait...no! that's not Timon and Pumbaa! or is it? Could of fooled me. Anyway, i'd like to reveal more, but pretty much anything that could be guessed to happen does. OK so...long story short. This movie "borrows" too much from other (better) Disney films...and does it horribly. Come on...Tip and Dash? Why not just make Dash obscenely flatulent and make it an even more obvious ripoff! Ugh. Not to mention, the total character butchery of Ariel's persona. She's gone from being a freespirited, headstrong woman, to a clone of her father. Not good at all...they're basically telling us the sweet, firey little mermaid we've known to grow and love is dead. Plus Melody herself isn't such a great character either...she's damned annoying! And bratty! Not to mention what they've done to Flounder. Ugh...anyway if you decide to see this piece of created-mainly-for-profit-reasons, no-imagination, Eisner-sponsored c******t, I suggest maybe waiting 'till its on the Disney channel or some other tv station. Because, it's not even worth the price of a rental. * out of ***** stars.

good approach

I love how Disney made a sequel for the Little Mermaid by making her a mom! I think it was really cute and different to see the mother-daughter relationship with Melody and Ariel. It was really nice to see one of the Disney Princesses become a mom. They should make Cinderella become a mom too. It also had a good plot. The music was nice, the art was great as Disney always does, and they used the most of the same people to play the characters. It is a great movie for the kids. There are some really funny parts that will make you laugh. I can't wait till Disney releases it again on DVD. Disney should start making more 2D animated films instead of 3D ones. More talent and hard work goes into them and you appreciate it more...at least i do.

Not bad, but not great

I loved The Little Mermaid, it's one of my all time favorite Disney movies, I grew up with it and I still watch it every once in a while. I just showed it to my 5 year old cousin for the first time since it was recently released on DVD, so she wanted to see the second one when we were at the video store and we just watched it and we over all had a good time. While I wasn't that impressed, it was better than most Disney sequels that are normally lame and predictable.Ariel and Eric have had a daughter, Melody. Mel is now becoming a teenager and cannot understand why she has such a great love for the sea, but Ariel forbids Mel from going to the sea not knowing when the right time would be to tell Mel about all her family history. But Mel has had it and wants to be a mermaid when Morgana, the evil sister of Ursela, grants Mel's wish, she can stay a mermaid if she steals her grandfather's trident so Morgana can become leader of the sea.Over all, I would recommend this for a family afternoon, it was a charming cartoon to watch. The Little Mermaid will always be the best, but The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea was a nice follow up that you very rarely see in today's Disney sequels. Again, what freaks me out though is typically they change the voices again and again for the characters, but I think I had a better time excepting it for this film.5/10

Really bad

posted on 04 Feb 2009

This is a movie that is bad in every imaginable way. Sure we like to know what happened 12 years from the last movie, and it works on some level. But the new characters are just not interesting. Baby Melody is hideously horrible! Alas, while the logic that humans can't stay underwater forever is maintained, other basic physical logic are ignored. It's chilly if you don't have cold weather garments if you're in the Arctic. I don't know why most comments here Return of Jafar rates worse, I thought this one is more horrible.

Good Effort

posted on 15 Jan 2009

I thought this movie was a good effort to follow up on the Little Mermaid movie, but I just found too much hard to accept from Ursula's sister to Melody not being allowed in the water. The movie is just a retread of the same plot with new but annoying characters tossed in for good measure. The style that made the original so fascinatingly magical is missing; the underwater scenes as mundane as the series created from the movie. The music score is off too as I regretted the predictable efforts to break into song. I'm sorry, but I can't recommend this movie to adults, but the kids will like it until they reach eight years old.

Its OK.... better than other Disney sequels..

posted on 11 Jan 2009

OK so this isn't the best Disney sequel or the worst. Its watchable. However i don't like the songs, and to be honest, like other sequels, the graphics is really bad. Eric and king triton look really weird, so does Ariel to a point.Anyway the story is, Ariel and Eric have a baby daughter called melody. When she goes to show melody to king triton, ursalla's evil sister Morgana tries to kill her. After that, until Morgana has been caught, Ariel decides melody cant go in the sea, ever!12 years on, there's a big wall to stop melody getting out, even tho shes found away, and she is obsessed with the sea, bit like Ariel used to be obsessed with humans when she was a teenager. Melody knows nothing of her past, until while in the sea one day, she finds the necklace her grandfather gave to her, and goes off to find out what it means. She meets Morgana on the way,and she turns her into a mermaid. They make a deal, if melody can get the Titan (tritons fork thingy, cant remember what its called) to her by the sun sets, Morgana will make her a mermaid forever.........Id give this 5 Etta 10. For me it didn't spoil the original version, which is good, but it wasn't that great either. Not bad, but not great.

Yet another awesome sequel for a great movie

posted on 20 Nov 2008

Well, most of these great movies from childhood managed to make amazing sequels to them. I grew up most of my childhood life watching "The Little Mermaid" and it still is my favorite movie. When I heard they were going to release the sequel to it, I thought it was going to be a total mess. But when I did get the movie, I wasn't disappointed at all. I was really looking forward to hearing Jodi Benson (Ariel) voice, because she's really got a gorgeous voice. But it's like Ariel is all grown up, she's got a child, Eric still sounds cute, Sebastian still so comical, Melody is much like her mother, King Triton has a gentle side. It was actually almost unique that they put Pat Carroll who previously done the voice of Ursula, and was the voice for Morgana, Ursula's sister. I wasn't ever disappointed, and I love mermaids too, so this movie made my day, when I was having a rough one, and I fell in love with it. So I'd really recommend this movie to all those who like sequels, and that you won't get disappointed.I rated this movie with 8 stars, because it was genuinely made, the cast was awesome, and I love Jodi Benson. There were some scenes that didn't make sense, but it still is worth a look...

Cheesy and shameful for Disney

posted on 15 Oct 2008

Disney goes to the well one too many times as anybody who has seen the original LITTLE MERMAID will feel blatantly ripped off. Celebrating the birth of their daughter Melody, Ariel and Eric plan on introducing her to King Triton. The celebration is quickly crashed by Ursula 's sister, Morgana who plans to use Melody as a defense tool to get the King 's trident. Stopping the attack, Ariel and Eric build a wall around the ocean while Melody grows up wondering why she cannot go in there.Awful and terrible is what describes this direct to video sequel. LITTLE MERMAID 2 gives you that feeling everything you watch seemed to have come straight other Disney movies. I guess Disney can only plagiarize itself! Do not tell me that the penguin and walrus does not remind you of another duo from the LION KING!Other disappointing moments include the rematch between Sebastien and Louie, the royal chef. They terribly under played it! The climax between Morgana and EVERYONE seemed to be another disappointment.I will not give anything away, but in 75 minutes, everything seemed incredibly cramped and too much to handle. An embarrassment to Disney, LITTLE MERMAID 2 is better left to rent and laugh at. Then you can prepare for the rest of the other sequels Disney is going to drown you in later on.

What a horrible sequel

I had such high hopes for this film because I loved the original so much. It seems that Disney, however, is trying to perfect the art of crappy straight-to-DVD sequels. They deserve a razzie. Several, in fact. I thought the idea had merit, but the music was absolutely awful and the story wasn't much better. What happened to the great music Disney used to have in their films. Mary Poppins, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King...even Hercules and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. They've made so many great movies over the years that it's really sad that they've sunk to point of making sequels that aren't even good enough to put in theatres.I hope this movie is not an indication of things to come for the Walt Disney Corporation.

This movie deserves to be cooked and then eaten by a pack of jackals rather than being watched

WARNING: THIS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS This movie is a sequel to the movie The Little Mermaid. The first movie was absolutely brilliant and sadly the sequel just doesn't match up to that. The story is about Ariel's daughter Melody (who is an annoying little brat) who is in danger of being kidnapped by Morgana (Ursula's sister) so she can get the trident from King Triton. To protect Melody, Ariel forbids Melody to go into the sea and a giant wall is built around the palace. Ariel tells Melody nothing about the world of mermaids and does not tell Melody about her merman grandfather King Triton or the fact that she was once a mermaid. When Melody grows up she develops a great interest in the sea and disobeys her mother one day and goes swimming in it. She finds a locket with her name on it but she doesn't get any explanation from her mother. Instead she gets a telling off. Upset Melody ventures out to the sea and Morgana finds her and turns her into a mermaid (what Melody always wanted). Happy Melody goes swimming in her new mermaid look not knowing that this part of Morgana's plan to take over the sea.So basically this movie was almost a re-telling of the first movie with the worlds reversed. In other words this movie was RUBBISH.If you have a lot of money don't waste it on this. Buy a Big Mac or a Harry Potter book. Basically something that is WORTH buying.

Someone should be stepped on for this.

Remember the Little Mermaid? The movie that made you believe in Disney again every time you saw it (no matter how awful their current movies were?) If you liked the Little Mermaid in the least bit, do not walk within viewing distance of this movie. I loved the Little Mermaid when it was the first movie I ever saw, I love it now; this movie, which had me excited in the beginning, left me feeling that it was better off never made. Everything in it, from character development, to voices, plot, lame side-kicks, lame villains, general stupidity, everything down to the more cutesy way things were colored and drawn, and the score. The original had a sort of mature feel that also appealed to kids that not a lot of Disney movies generally have, and this movie ended up as a drop in a sea of terrible Disney sequels.

Shocking

I LOVE how bad this movie is.Ariel's all grown up. She has a daughter. So far so good. But then Ursula's wonky sister MORGANA shoots up like a jack-in-the-box and whizzes back and forth across the screen while Sebastian declares: "OH NO! IT'S URSULA'S CRAZY SISTER MORGANA!" Cute little Flounder has been replaced with an obese, nasal lump of lubber. A walrus and a penguin follow Melody around. It's basically the first film all over again. Only two differences: it's her wanting to go from human to mermaid.Oh, and it's total rubbish. Don't miss it!

Cute, yet slighty confusing...

I love this movie. I was a big fan of the first and (although usually turned off by sequels made more than two years after the original)was surprised with this one. It was not as awkward as most sequels that are done so long after the first. Now, I have one question... Has anyone else noticed that the ages for this movie are mathematically impossible? The original movie came out in 1989, and the second in 2000. This is 11 years, however, the second movie is about the daughter becoming 12. Since Ariel and Eric only knew each other three days, I doubt that the child could have been conceived early enough to make her 12 for this movie. This obviously isn't exactly the greatest comment on here, but it really is something that bothered me throughout the movie.

Like all the others...

Very few Disney sequels ever come close to the quality of the original, and this is probably why so many of them come directly to video. This film is no exception. The story is okay, but the characters are boring, and you learn to hate Melody after a few really, really stupid moves on her part. It's not as bad as The Return of the Jafar, but not close to as good as The Lion King II: Simba's Pride or Aladdin and the King of Thieves or even Pocahontas II. Of course, none of these compare to the quality of Toy Story 2, which notably went to theaters and is actually better than the first one.You can really afford to miss this film.

Not a bad film.

Hardly ever have I seen a really disappointing Disney film, and
The Little Mermaid II isn't an exception. The story is beautiful,
although I thought all the time that Ariel and Eric had made a
mistake in not telling little Melody that her mother had
originally been a mermaid. The animation was also very
good.I liked Ariel and little Melody, but Morgana and Triton were the
best of the characters. I was delighted that Triton was not as
strict as in the first movie, and I have always liked wicked
woman characters like Morgana. But, of course, I was glad that
she was finally destroyed. In any case, I'm quite sure that H.C. Andersen would not have
been very content with this sequel, because his original fairytale
was meant to be very sad. I even paid attention to that neither
in the first film nor in the sequel have Ariel or Melody any
pains while walking on their feet - namely, Andersen tells that
every step the little mermaid takes is hurting her as if she was
stepping on an edge of a knife.

Jodi Benson just had to reprieve her role

Disney has yet to meet a movie it couldn't make at least two sequels about. And this one was no exception to the people at Disney to give a weak story to receive a quick reward. Somehow, although I did not pay to view it, I feel cheapened by watching it.Ariel is grown up now and had a daughter. Yet doesn't allow the daughter to go into the sea because of some idle threat made by the sister of the deceased sea-witch. So here we go again. The daughter is tricked (of course) and helps the sea-witch. After a not-so-glorious battle, she is defeated and the mermaids and humans live in harmony. Yawn. There is nothing to view here. Go back to your lives. "D-"

Not half as good as The Little Mermaid

posted on 07 Nov 2006

Almost every Disney classic has a sequel or sequels, None of them comes close to the originals but this movie is really not half so good as Part one. The characters are flat and it isn't a story about Ariel but about her daughter Melody, who wants to be a mermaid, so it's just the original story but than backwards, with help of Ursula sister Morgana Melody becomes a mermaid but she has to do something in return. I simply didn't like this movie, the animation and story are flat, Morgana has the same voice as Ursula, but Morgana is not half as evil as her wicked sister, who is my favorite Disney villain. So if you are a collector watch this film just to see how bad it is, but if you don't watch it you won't miss a thing.

Another sequel?

posted on 20 Oct 2006

The Little Mermaid II is just another Disney sequel, following An Extremely Goofy Movie, The Return of Jafar, Pocahontas II and The Lion King II, with the lower quality of animation than the originals. I was excited to watch Return to the Sea because I wanted to see what happened in the movie. Once I saw it, I found myself saying "Oh look, that happened in part one." about five times. The truth is, a lot of the same things that have happened in part one happen in part two. It's a good story but it's just rushed through. And the new "Timon-and-Pumbaa-like" characters, Tip and Dash try to be funny, but are just not. One thing that is good is Sebastian, he is his old self and he brings a lot of the laughs of the movie! All in all it wasn't a bad sequel, but I have seen better from Disney. Now we wait for The Hunchback of Notre Dame II and The Lady and the Tramp II.

what is Disney doing?

posted on 18 Oct 2006

don't get me wrong, i ABSOLUTELY love Disney films, especial the classics like the little mermaid and aladdin. but i hate it when Disney makes a sequel to the classics. Disney should at least make the sequel look like it only came out a year after the original. same way of designing the movies, the colors, etc. they add all these bright colors and they detail everything wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to much making it loook to....i don't know the word....just, kinda ugly.they kinda make the characters look young they they are really suppose to be. im not saying that its a bad thing, but you know that you have a problem when the characters of a sequel look younger than in the original...and then with the voices and personalities. a sequel is never right unless the actors are the same and the personalities ahvent changed(or that least not as much).Disney...please just stick to making classics instead of sequels. unless you know that a sequel is necessary and the sequel will be a hit like the original.

Sucessful sequel, save animation quality & songs

posted on 12 Jun 2006

The original is one of my top animations and I enjoyed some episodes of the TV series, so I was eager to see this one. For once I didn't feel the need to rent it first. (Sequels to Lion King, Aladdin, Pocahontas etc were disappointing.)The animation quality was less than I hoped, but the characters and plot were engaging. Ariel's daughter, Melody, was sympathetic and I liked her companions, Tip and Dash (An amusing penguin & walrus combination)The villain is Ursula's skinny sister, Morganna, who has more depth than the former. Her shrunken hench-shark gets some of the funnier lines. It's good to see Flounder and Sebastian again too, as well as Ariel. The songs are dreadful though.I'd recommend the film to anyone who loved the original. 9/10
