A good laugh!!

posted on 28 Aug 2009

I personally found this film so funny! I think this is Myers's best character to date, move over Austin(got bored after 1st)... I laughed throughout the film and had to watch it a second time. I can't for the life of me understand the negative comments made about this movie, probably all die hard Austin fans that can't cope with the change. Firstly this is not to be taken seriously (as all comedies by the way), If you are in a silly mood and can take a joke without trying to be a smart a** "I'm too mature" person then this is one for you. It has it's clever moments of comedy brilliance as well.. Ben Kingsley makes a great appearance as the cross eyed mentor. Justin Timberlake impressed me as the hilarious Celine Dion fanatic Grande. And Myers creates another fantastic character. A great treat from a great comedian of our times. Loved it! Fantastic fun!!! If you are bored and feeling nowhere then watch this film and you will find yourself "now-here"TM lol! Enjoy

I'm still sore from laughing

I got to see this movie for free at a preview. I usually avoid comedies these days -- I get tired of the premise after about 30 minutes. But this movie kept me laughing from beginning to end -- great setups for jokes, great sight gags, and likable characters. However, one warning, which you might consider a spoiler -- lots of penis, poop, and snot jokes. And if you are easily offended, you might want to avoid it. Otherwise it's the perfect movie for a bad day, and it's not a long movie -- you won't find yourself wondering when it's going to end. So if you're boss is driving you crazy, or your Economic Stimulus Payment was just enough to cover the cost of filling the gas tank, you might spend the money and go see this. It's a hoot.

What a Waste

What happened to Mike Myers????? This movie is just plain awful. I'm so glad I didn't pay to see it. Maybe Mike Myers needs to get out of the acting business. The dialog was awful, the acting was worse. I'm sorry I wasted 20 minutes of my life watching the beginning of it. What has happened to Hollywood? Movies are $10 now and the movies are just not quality movies anymore. I think Mike Myers should refund the money to people who DID pay to see this untalented piece of garbage. Don't see this movie! I saw this movie with a large group of people--and we all walked out of it. Those that paid to see it, demanded their money back. The manager was nice enough to refund some but not all.

even straight teenage guys would rather watch sex in the city

this movie is simply pathetic in almost every way. the only 2 actors that add anything at all to this are Jessica Alba(who needs to fire her agent or who ever got her this roll) and Verne Taylor. Mike Myers part could have been played better by a chimp and if it was at least it would have an excuse.to make it worse Mike wrote this waste of film forever damming his writing and quite possibly his acting carer. As for the actual movie plot it is given to you in the first 5 minutes of the film and does not make a single twist, surprise, or even sense. he (Myers charter fails at his job yet it still yields results while writing this Myers catches this huge plot hole and fills it with something that to every one amazement makes, no sense. every joke is about penises and not a single one liner pops up in the film

It's OK to love the Guru

Admit it already you laughed.I am shocked by the bad reviews of the movie. I thought it was hilarious. It is Mike Myer's best film since Wanyes World two. Now I know I'm going to get a lot of hate from that last comment implying that Guru is better than Austin Powers. True they are basically the same thing. They're both a parade of dick jokes held together by a bad story. Austin Powers went down hill after the first film. The second was crap and Goldmember was unwatchable. the only thing that Austin Powers has that Love Guru doesn't is those cheese one liners but we all want to choke someone when they say "Yeah Baby". Love Guru's comedy has evolved from Austin Powers and has more of a heart. It tries to convey a message of self love and improvement, but fails to reach the audience. It was nice to see Verne Troyer play a slightly more dignifying role than mini me in order to rebuild his career since it fell apart during the surreal world. Justin Timberlakes performance on the other hand was terrible. Every singer likes to think they can act but the truth is that very few can act. I don't know if it was the acting or the character but Timberlake killed every scene that he was in.After seven years of Shrek fans expected some sort of profound comedy that will reinvent Mike Myers. Instead we where reminded of who he really is: immature dick jokes that only appeal to the teenage boy mind. The jokes where a bit over the top. Although why must dick jokes be shun away? It is human to enjoy something as simple and silly as a dick joke. We like to believe that we are above that and only laugh at clever observations of pop culture. You need to take break from adulthood and embrace the inner child by laughing at a dick. For all that I give the Love Guru a seven out of ten. And don't hate Mike for not doing something new but love him for being what he has always been.Gee youare you

OK movie

the love guru is not the best movie around but it depends on the type of humor you have, if you know you don't like movies with stupid jokes and innuendos this is not the movie to see if you like comedy then you should see this movie, it has stupid jokes and stuff but i liked the movie and the 3 other people i saw it with also found it funny and liked it it all depends on the type of comedy you like and what you find funny. i read the reviews that said oh this the worst movie it sucks so when i went to see it i thought o this movie is gonna blow but i was surprised i was laughing the whole time i would definitely go see this i i was just going to have a good time

Don't expect anything, and you will be rewarded.

While there were a lot of toilet-humor jokes and ridiculous innuendos, I feel the movie deserves some credit. There were continuously funny moments that one has to be culturally aware to recognize (look for Kanye "Bush doesn't Care About Black People" West in the movie, also see if you catch the "Dear Prudence" reference). This movie didn't try to have an Oscar-winning script- it is just a fun, silly movie and was marketed as such. My fellow movie-goers and I were continually snickering and often burst out in laughter. This movie doesn't deserve the awful hype it's been trashed with. It was no artful masterpiece, but I feel that it fulfilled its job in being able to make us laugh.

IT's A Funny Movie

Mike Meyers has a unique humor that you either like or hate. The way he plays with words and old jokes is very creative and mostly funny. He does weave a few jokes and scenes from his past projects, but they work and are still funny. Some would say they are a tribute to his other films that we love. With all that said there were a few scenes that went on with out humor. Stephen Colbert's scenes were not funny and too long. I like Colert but he was handed or improved lines that did not work. Justin Timberlake was good and had a couple of good lines. Vern Troyer was great and very funny. Jessica Alba has one great scene with the fans but is mostly eye candy (one eyed candy Shwing!).Meyers has another franchise on his hands. Leave your troubles, see the movie, Laugh Out Loud, and forgive the few missteps.

So glad i didn't leave during the start!

I feel that this movie is getting a lot of unfair reviews simply because people cant wait to copy the critics opinion. God, you all remind me of Sean Penn. By the way, if the Austin Powers series never was released, all of you would love this! The movie however did start badly. I had read some bad reviews beforehand but I wanted to go and enjoy this. What I think was wrong with the start was the pure unfunnyness of it. Mike was acting horribly and the 9 to 5 song made feel like I was Julian in The Happening.Around the time he met Mariska Hargitay the movie improved. What I admired about it was the spontaneous and outrageous humor and the cock double entendres. Although I do see why people could hate this.JESSICA ALBA WAS MISCAST. She was acting like a block of wood and the character she was portraying should have been much older and she didn't look the part.3 words can sum this film up. Average Myers Comedy.

Really, it was pretty funny

This movie was just what it promised to be: a send-up of boomer narcissism, and it hit nearly every note. True, many of the jokes were puerile, but that was just the point: in our overly "pc" and self-absorbed "boomeritis," we repress our "animality" as if it did not exist, making us a truly a a stick-up-your-ass culture. Myers and co. skewered our new age self-obsession and self-deludedness perfectly. I have to believe that this movie was over (or under) the heads of a lot of the reviewers here. If you have not been exposed to Deepak Chopra and the new age philosophy, you will not get the total send-up that this film offers.

Somewhat Enjoyable But Flawed In Many Ways

posted on 25 Jul 2009

I went to the Love Guru with a group of friends because we were mainly all bored & we were hoping for a good laugh. Mike Myers career seems to be on an edge for a few years now. This is like his only live-action movie since the box-office bomb, "The Cat in the Hat." I wonder why? But anyways, this movie pleased us with a few good laughs here & there with many jokes related to Canadian hockey jokes I you liked Austin Powers you'll love the Love Guru but if you aren't really interested in that sort of stuff you'll be bored to tears. So basically in the end, The Love Guru is sure to cheer you up if you're having a bad day but all in the end, the bad acting, over-used jokes & especially terrible musical numbers won't make this movie very memorable. You probably won't fall in love with The Love Guru but you may enjoy it's company whenever you're in the mood for a good chuckle.

amazing

This movie was fantastic from beginning to end. It makes you laugh all the way throughout. Mike Myers does a fantastic job along with mini me and Jessica Alba. I do not agree with the other review as it is not stupid and does have a great story line. It also features real celebrities like Jessica Simpson and Kanye West.A great comedy intended for most ages. It features very creative comedy and well put together words. this includes; "liquor in the front, and poker in the back". That was a fantastic line and only one of very many creative lines. Mike Myers dream t of creating a movie like this and he made it successfully in one of his most outrageous comedies ever. This is a very enjoyable movie and advise you to see it.

Watchable, but not re-watchable

posted on 25 Jul 2009

It's the kind of movie you'll never watch again, but one where you'll remember some of the bits and recite.Justin Timberlake is great. There are a few funny bits, but most are dumb. The plot is thin and only watchable because of the amusing leads. If this flick stared unknowns it would be totally un-watchable.And now it's time to fill ten lines with the storyline: Pitka an American raised outside of his country by gurus, returns to the States in order to break into the self-help business. His first challenge: To settle the romantic troubles and subsequent professional skid of a star hockey player whose wife left him for a rival athlete.

How the mighty have fallen!

For context I'm a big Austin Powers/Waynes World fan so I *DO* get his humour and I'm not a brainless teen either. I'm a 34 year White male from England who enjoys both 'simple' comedy and more intelligent subtle stuff, if it matters. I've only said this as there is far too much talk of the reasons why people are rating this down but the movie itself is all the evidence you need to see why it's rated low.Sadly I think the funny content from The Love Guru could have been condensed into a 5 minute SNL sketch and worked just as well (OK, would have worked better).I felt the beginning was extremely rushed, the set up was poor and lazy. All the characters were lifeless drones and mostly arbitrary, I didn't know why I should care about anyone.I felt Mike didn't make enough of his character, didn't develop him fully and it was to me a mix of 3 of his previous characters (Fat B******d, Dr Evil and Austin Powers) in one but not as funny or as strong as any of them, certainly not when it's just a single character trying to carry an entire film.It was just weak all round, packed with overused/under-funny puns. There were one or two moments that were genuinely funny or amusing, but by about half way through I just gave up caring and found myself just not laughing anymore. It didn't feel like a Mike Myers movie, it felt like someone had written/directed a movie that they THOUGHT captured the humour of Austin Powers but missed the mark badly. It was a 'by the numbers' attempt at the winning Austin Powers humour that just doesn't work with this set of characters and this plot. A very very thin plot I may add, even for a Mike Myers comedy. On top of that you have the main cast who in my opinion were all miscast except for the main 'hockey player' character who was believable and did a decent job. Perhaps part of the problem though was that Mike Myers should have been playing these central characters himself to fully develop the humour in the film, then again maybe that's just wishful thinking given the terrible pacing and careless direction of the film.I couldn't get a handle on just 'who' Guru Pitka 'was'. He was a mix of all MM's characters but none unique to the new character. It was just very hard to feel anything for GP as his persona seemed to change from scene to scene in the most haphazard/distracting way. A lack of consistency basically. You could never accuse Dr Evil of fluctuating in character throughout a film to the point you give up believing in him or stop caring about his 'funny lines'. Essentially the main character of the Love Guru just isn't strong or compelling enough, maybe he'd be OK as a small character on an Austin Powers movie but he was dreadful as the lead (and only) Mike Myers character on an entire film.Let's just hope they don't make 2 sequels to this terrible waste of talent and potential and with any luck they MAY realise just how special the Austin Powers films were and make some more of those instead of worrying about having to change for the sake of it. Change is good but only if you do better than before, Every single one of the Mike Myers characters that has appeared in an Austin Powers movie could have made a better lead character for a film or spin off than this totally unconvincing 'love guru'.3/10 from me and that's only because of MM of whom I'm a big fan and appreciate for all of his previous, very very funny films.

Mr. Myers, Please retire because your career is dire.

An open letter to Mr. Michael Myers.Dear Mr. Myers.I am writing to inform you that it's the sign of the times and I think you should read and understand what it clearly means in regards to your....career. The years have come and go but unfortunately they have not been kind to cinema and society in general. The reason I'm writing this letter is because I feel that deep in my heart you should SERIOUSLY consider throwing in the towel and find something else worthwhile pursuing; maybe philanthropy perhaps? If you do that not only will people respect you more but it will also help wash away all memories of those years enduring your crap after crap after crap movies. Although I can't see how this can possibly happen overnight if fate and the universe persists, it will be a sigh of relief if it was all the more true.Memories. Oh how profoundly fond those memories are and I recall watching "Wayne's World" when I was teeny-weeny with a more less jaded view of the world and then came "Austin Powers". Ahhh, the laughs those provided to help me drift away from the drudgery of life. Then a funny thing happened and the end result was a horrific turn as a pudgy, sex-innuendo laden feline several years ago. In my mind there's no denying that you should have realized that your career tanked at that point for someone once funny to even remotely consider such a perilous career move. The days of "Austin Powers" are gone, buddy. GROW UP AND BE A MAN!!!Having read the news a while back of your latest endeavor, I hoped that you'll rebound after such a dog-pile-of-you-know-what of said movie. But alas, my hopes were shattered once again and as I left the theater after witnessing such a travesty of talentless vain proportions, the fragility of my mental state almost reached the breaking point when a good Samaritan saved me from what was, to be precise, an almost life-threatening ordeal. I thanked the good Samaritan of course as any sane individual would do and went our separate ways. But I will never, EVER, thank you for releasing such soul-shattering ineptness garbage that nearly killed me dared to be released for unsuspecting, innocent eyes!!!So in conclusion, after clearing my head of the madness that I suffered, cleansed my spirit as well as my soul, I am now able to return to the outside world once again with the notion that no human being should ever go through such a horrific experience. Although I know that time doesn't heal all wounds but it is known that the human spirit is a remarkable thing that not even the likes of you and the evils of Hollywood inhabiting the blue and green world cannot comprehend. That special someone, that one individual who saved me from the madness you spewed fourth are moments like these that remind me of the good in the world. And for that, I'm grateful.

Don't Murder Me, But......

... I am not ashamed to admit that I loved this movie. Sure, the script was pretty terribly written, and a lot of the jokes were stupid and not funny, but I did laugh my ass off with this film at times, and I thought this movie did a very good job with what it was set out to do and that is to entertain. Mike Meyers is a very funny man, and although he's losing his touch, just a little, he played an excellent role in The Love Guru as did everyone else. All I have to say now is if you didn't like this movie I'm not telling you that you should because it's not everyone's kind of movie, but just try to lighten up and enjoy it for what it is, and don't be expecting an Oscar worthy masterpiece or vice versa if you haven't seen it yet and you want to.

Silly fun

I am going over the top with the rating because I feel a certain sexually orientated group is bashing this movie over the top because they can't laugh at themselves.Mike Myers is a funny guy and the slapstick scenes in this movie are what is to be expected from him.I laughed out loud several times. But see the point here is you can't be such a prude or so sensitive that you can't laugh at funny when funny is funny. There are about ten laugh out loud scenes in this movie and if you can't see it then to bad.If you are going to see Mike Myers and not expect this type of movie then you should re-evaluate what you think he does.As gross as pee soaked mop fighting may sound to you, I laugh at the mere mention of it. I laughed at a review which mentioned it.

How lousy can a movie get?

posted on 07 Jul 2009

It's obvious when a comic knows they're bombing: they resort to the crutch of using dirty jokes or ethnic jokes (against some group that isn't represented in the audience, of course) for cheap, easy laughs. Love Guru is evidence that Mike Myers is dreadfully insecure about the future of his career.Austin Powers (oh wait, that's the character being rehashed but not what they call him in this flop), learns Eastern Religion and a bad accent. His journey of enlightenment is apparently to insult people (usually with that familiar word that starts with "f"). He chases women, gives advice on how to offend women and therefore get one, etc. There are no laughs, no memorable moments, no reasons to watch this whatsoever. In addition to Myers self-destructing, Jessica Alba continues her challenge to set a record for consecutive lousy performances in worthless movies. Her current run of these career-ending disasters is a number roughly equal to the number of miles that light travels in a year. This rubbish isn't even good enough for "straight to video" release. The producers, had they had a moment of self-preservation and/or sanity, should have decided not to release it at all.

This movie... was... really BAD! Don't see it! I never wanted to see it, I WAS BROUGHT BY FORCE! This movie was terrible! It made barely any sense and was just really bad... there's no other way to explain it! I came to this site to tell people about good movies! This movie was SO bad I have to tell people how BAD it was! There were 2 or 3 good jokes, but not anything you would tell for a funny. I have to say goodbye to Mike... Unless he makes another Austin Powers, no one will want to watch him again. Sorry Mike, but Micheal Myers (Halloween, duh) is ready to smite you. Good Luck on your next film, you're going to need it!

The only thing laughable is the film itself

People may think I am exaggerating how jaw droppingly awful this movie is, but I'm really not. This movie has earned it's place in the Bottom 100.It's extremely stupid and the screenwriter clearly has no wit whatsoever. I noticed a lot of recylced jokes from early Mike Myers movies, but no one will notice because they too busy staring at Justin Timberlake's fake bulge.Expect a ton of jokes about poop that aren't remotely funny. A five year old could've written this junk, and it would be superior. Do not waste your money on this offensive piece of crap (Yes, I'm offended by the way they are representing American filmmakers).
