Lightweight but charmingly funny
posted on 22 Aug 2009An oft-overlooked comedy from the mid-eighties, "The Money Pit" is the story of a yuppie couple who end up pouring every dime they have into fixing up what LOOKED like their dream house when they bought it, only to find out that it is just one strong breeze away from falling apart. The ensuing story is a series of comical construction mishaps, shady contractors, teetering relationships, and some of Tom Hanks' best slapstick performances. Of note, the scene where the bathtub falls through the floor and Hanks looks down on it in a fit of desperate laughter, and the scene where Hanks is trapped in a rug that has fallen through yet another hole in the floor.
Look for a small part by a then-barely-known Joseph Mantegna.
The comedy never quite fires on all cylinders, but it charms and entertains you nonetheless.
This is probably Richard Benjamin's second best directorial effort, next to the untouchable "My Favorite Year".
Money Pit WOW
posted on 10 Aug 2009This is a hilariously written and acted film about two young people who get carried away with the beauty of an old house only to find that it is SERIOUSLY flawed. Tom Hanks and Shelly Long are fantastic and people who love old houses will really identify with this.
I love the Money Pit, that is my answer to say to that statement
posted on 07 Aug 2009If you are familiar with any Sid reviews then you know about our love of b films. You make think The Money Pit was a huge film and in no way is b, which the point is valid. However almost every 80's comedy at this point can be found in the same category as b which leaves them all open to a nice Sid review. They all have really corny humor which walks the line of being b anyway, so why not treat them as such. It's a funny rainy afternoon flick and shows Tom Hanks in the light of still being likeable. Long before his days of boring drawn out big budget trash, the guy actually has something to offer.
Hanks plays a guy named Walter who decides to purchase a house with his girlfriend after they get booted from their apartment. They find a huge place for a cheap price only to have it fall apart piece by piece. It's really one of those essential 80's comedies filled with brainless laughs. This is something Sid loves. We plan on doing a lot of 80's comedies in the near future and can tell you this is one we would have enjoyed back in the day. Almost as much a Peter Griffin does.
A Truly Funny Movie
posted on 26 Jul 2009Go ahead and buy this one. The movie is an absolute riot. Anyone who has ever looked at a home improvement project and thought, "piece of cake", will probably need to wear Depends while watching this movie.
There are so many great lines in this movie that they just keep cropping up in my life. All I need to say to my wife is, "maybe a little dinner, some dancing, that's it" and she's on the floor.
There is one "conflict" scene that I think the movie could've done without, but what do I know, I'm only a viewer. But it does give a setup for a great plasterer line.
If you have "weak trees", bad plumbing, or any of a plethora of other home adventures you will enjoy this movie.
Recommended with absolutely no reservations.
This movie had me on the floor
posted on 11 Jul 2009I feel this is one of Tom Hanks & Shelley Longs' funniest roles. I loved this movie because it hits home with me & maybe with anyone that has purchased a older home. I still makes me smile no matter how many times I've viewed it. Great bit of fun!
Absolutely Hysterical
posted on 05 Jul 2009I don't understand why anyone would not like this movie! This movie is one of only a couple of movies that still makes me laugh hysterically every time I see it. One of the funniest parts is when Tom Hanks goes out to the trees and decides to carve his & Shelley Long's initials into one of them, only to have the entire area collapse around him. Then, when he comes in to tell her that they "have very weak trees," the funniest sound effect of the burnt-out doorbell is heard. I am laughing very hard just writing this review thinking about it. This movie is fabulous, and I wouldrecommend it to anyone who likes a good belly laugh every now & then.
this movie makes me laugh
posted on 04 Jun 2009the reality of the characters, and the proportionate unreality of some of the same characters makes this movie one of my favorites. The egocentricity of Max and the humbleness of Walter play against Shelly Long's character in a most bemusing way. Given the stress of buying a new home, coupled with the realization of the decrepit nature of the same purchased house- lends believability to the extreme reactions the two lead characters exhibit as they discover to what exact degree they have been duped. Resulting in a catharsis that what matters most is their love for each other not the ownership of material positions...in this case, The Money Pit.
The good old days
posted on 24 May 2009Ah the 80's. Back when John Candy was alive and Tom Hanks did a string of comedies before he became all 'serious'. This is a great movie about a couple who buys an old 'fixer-upper' for a house and get in way, way over their heads. Everything needs to be redone (wiring, plumbing, etc.) and everything constantly falls apart.
Shelley Long is her usual cute self. I have to admit I've had a real soft spot for her ever since Cheers. So if you want an evening to remember your favorite decade, or a family night with the kids, 'The Money Pit' is right on the money.

The Money Pit
posted on 16 Mar 2009The funniest movie of the 80s. If you have ever purchased a fixer upper you have to see this movie. Richard Benjamin does an excellent job in following the footsteps of Mr Blandings Builds his Dream House. Tom Hanks and Shelly Long are matched perfectly and the chemistry between them is akin to Cary Grant and Myrna Loy. You will want to see this movie over and over through out the years to come. It is a classic and should be in everyones dvd library.
Hilarious
posted on 04 Mar 2009One of the overlooked comedy classics, with Tom Hanks at his pre-Oscar best and Shelley Long matching him. Snappy writing and great one-liners makes this a movie you'll be quoting often. If you ever do any home improvement project, you'll find yourself muttering, "Two weeks!" over and over. Also makes a great gag gift for anyone about to buy or renovate a house.
Note to Amazon: your internal review has factual errors. A major plot point is that Hanks' and Long's characters are NOT married, and she is not "attracted to a long-haired violinist" - he is a snobby conductor and her ex-husband, to whom she is NOT attracted anymore. It is difficult to take the reviewer's opinion seriously when he's so far off the mark on basic plot points.
Ha HAAAAA!
posted on 05 Feb 2009This movie really has some downright funny moments. My personal favorite being the tub falling through the floor after Tom Hanks pours some water into it. His reaction and over-the-top laughter will have you laughing right along with him. This laugh can be found around the web on wav files. It's truly a classic moment.
Hanks & Long Building a Dream!
posted on 27 Jan 2009A Great comedy! Funny, Furious, and Fracturing! Who knew something with Steven Spielburg's name attached could be so Great? Tom Hanks and Shelly Long are fantastic together as a frazzled couple trying to live the american dream with the world seemingly against them! But don't worry It will all come together in about two weeks! the widescreen DVD is Finally available for everyone to enjoy!
Amusing, but falls short of potential
posted on 27 Nov 2008A typical '80's slapstick farce style comedy that would have been a lot more fun if it wasn't burdened with a lot of needless sub-plot clutter. The film's one-joke premise of a couple trying to renovate a disintegrating fixer-upper house was a clever idea. Apparently, however, the film makers believed peripheral stories should be tossed in.Tom Hanks is a plus for every movie he's in, and he makes the most of what the script offers. Most of the comic material in the script is recycled stuff, but Hanks manages to hit the right level of slapstick to generate some humor from it. Shelley Long displays great comic timing and delivery too, and she and Hanks make a pretty cute couple to look at.The house falling to pieces whenever somebody touches something is an OK idea, but it only can carry a story so far, even with the strong lead actors. After a while, everything falling apart or falling down, or falling on characters gets stale. By the time a long winded scene of a domino-effect series of destructive accidents takes place, the joke is over. Then there's weird characters thrown in that just annoy the principal characters and the audience. The unwanted suitor bit is worthless and unfunny, especially the counterfeit accent the actor does. A few other comic relief characters, based on tiresome stereotypes used way too often in this sort of movie, are just extra baggage with no laughs. The movie has moments, especially early on. If the director had utilized Hanks and Long to the level of their talents, this movie would have been more akin to a Tracy/Hepburn screwball comedy. Instead, some of the comic potential falls apart much like the house does.

Tom Hanks old movies are just killer funny....
posted on 31 Aug 2009Very funny, a must see!
This movie really does match it's title. This couple moves into this (what I think is Incredible) mansion that needs extensive work. As they live in it, it starts to really fall apart and they do all they can to try and fix it up. As the house falls apart, they as a couple, also begin to fall apart. The ending is wonderful. This movie is a comedy and partly romance. Be sure to watch it, you won't regret it!
