In ancient Egypt, high priest Imhotep started a forbidden relationship with Anck Su Namun, Pharaoh Seti's Mistress. When Seti finds out about what's going on, Imhotep and his loved one stab him, but can't escape the trustworthy guards: Anck Su Namnun chooses to commit suicide while Imhotep is bestowed with the Hom-Dai, the most feared curse of all: He is mummified alive in Hamunaptra, the city of the Dead. More than thirty-six centuries later, in 1923, to be exact, adventurer Rick leads Egyptologist Evelyn and her brother Johnathan to mysterious Hamunaptra. While Johnathan is keen on finding the legendary Egyptian treasures, Evelyn wants to search for the Book of the Living, which would clarify a lot in historical knowledge about the ancient Egyptians. Unfortunately, they and a rivaling group of careless American adventurers free Imhotep's mummy from his eternal prison. Now, with the ancient and quite agile high priest on the loose, the adventurers and scientists face not only a dangerous enemy, but also a massive threat to today's world: Imhotep wants to bring Ankh-su-namun back to life by using Evelyn's body, but he also wants to rid the world of the disbelieving crowd of democracy-supporters to be able to enforce his tyrannic dictatorship.

A Must See Adventure For All!, Its An Excellent Mummy Movie, With Fantastic Special Effects, And Fun Performances!
posted on 16 Aug 2009This is a must see adventure for all!, its an excellent Mummy movie, with fantastic special effects and fun performances!. All the characters are just great!, and the story is really cool, plus Brendan Fraser makes a surprisingly great Action hero!. Fraser and Rachel Weisz had very good chemistry together, and John Hannah is very funny as Evelyn's brother!, plus Arnold Vosloo made for a pretty damn good Mummy!. OK granted, it may not be as good as the 1932 classic staring Boris Karloff, or even the 1959 version starring Chrsitopher Lee, however it really does make for a very entertaining action film, only problem it runs a tad too long, but it's never boring. One of the funniest moments for me is when Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) is in the Library putting books back on the shelves and the ladder collapses, and she messes up the whole library!. It's very well written and made, and i thought Kevin J. O'Connor was very good as the weasel Beni!, plus The finale is very exciting!. This is a must see adventure for all, it's an excellent Mummy movie, with fantastic special effects and fun performances!, and I say it's a must see for everyone. The Direction is awesome!. Stephen Sommers does an awesome! job here, with fantastic camera work, great angles, and lots of other cool shots as well!, plus he kept the film at a very fast pace. The Acting is wonderful!. Brendan Fraser is absolutely wonderful here, he has all the tools to be a great action hero, and here he proves it, with his sly humor, and his charisma!, he also had very good chemistry with Rachel Weisz, kicked that ass, was extremely likable, and was just tons of fun to watch!(Fraser Rules!!). Rachel Weisz is gorgeous, and does excellent here, she was adorable, had very good chemistry with Brendan Fraser, and she didn't take things all that seriously most of the time, which made her even more fun to watch!, she was great. John Hannah is very funny as the brother of Evelyn, sure he may be part of the comic relief, but his character really amused me as I thought it blended in with the film pretty well in my opinion!. Arnold Vosloo may not be great in terms of Acting range here, but he sure has one hell of a presence, and made for one awesome Mummy!, he was creepy, and extremely menacing, i loved him!.Kevin J. O'Connor is very effective as the weasel Benni!, perhaps a little too well, he was so convincing!. Oded Fehr is great here as Ardeth, he was cool, and likable i dug his part. Rest of the cast do fine. Overall a must see for everyone!. ****1/2 out of 5
The hidden city of Hamunaptra sets the scene to unleash the curses of Egypt and re-awaken The Mummy.
posted on 16 Aug 2009An action packed film, that echoes the greatness of Indiana Jones. Sadly it is however not quite as good. It is packed with references to the doomed curses of Egypt and the ancient scripts, very well thought out and very entertaining. Brenden Fraiser plays the part of the hero brilliantly and looks the part with his unshaven predatorial look! Rachel Weisz also has the damsel in distress role down to an art. The film tells the tales of the hidden city of Hamunaptra, where rumour has it that the ancient scripts can be read out to unleash the power of the Mummy - a man murdered for having an affair with the emporers wife, but he escaped first and cast a curse which would enable him and his love to awaken from the dead in the bodies of mortals in years to come. It just so happened that it took 3,000 years before they were re-awakened, so hes pretty bitter!!
On the whole a passable way to spend a couple of hours.
posted on 10 Aug 2009Raiders of the lost Ark meets Jason and the Argonauts with a little bit of romancing the stone thrown in just for good measure. The special effects keep things moving and do compensate for some average acting. It is not edge of the seat stuff but still makes it as entertaining. The films saving grace is that it doesn't take itself seriously, by the same token it isn't outrageously funny either.
Not too bad at all
posted on 10 Aug 2009Over all, The Mummy is a terrific movie with a lot of adventure, humor, drama, and romance. Brandon Frasier is a remarkable actor. But I wasn't too into his role, he seemed too macho. I dealt though. The entire cast did a good job. For the most part, Benny entertained me the most. If you are a fan of the original Mummy, you'll like this one.8/10
Bury this movie fast!
posted on 06 Aug 2009Quite possibly one of the poorest movies I have ever seen and I have seen quite a few in my timeWhat an all too simple story. It's a weak excuse to throw some special effects around which surprisingly weren't that good. When I saw in the credits that ILM was doing them I was ready to be blown away. Mediocre is what comes to mind when I think of the effects. A few of them are impressive but when it comes to ILM most people expect eye-popping as a standard. In one scene, the mummy who is slowly regenerating, has scabs and scars on portions of his face. For some reason they were unnecessarily computer generated. And to make it worse, they seemed to floating off his face as the effects personnel did a poor job matching the shape of the scars to the mummy's face. Quite a few times there are thousands of bugs, be it scarabs, locusts, or flies buzzing or crawling around. The sheer number is a bit impressive but what distracted me was that the bugs were shiny for some reason forcing me to realize that they were in fact computer generated. The movie's script is filled with one-liners that just aren't funny. It doesn't help when most of them are said by the leading man Brenden Frasier who for the entire movie either needs cough medicine because his voice is forcefully scratchy or curls his lip as if he had some peanut butter stuck to the front of his teeth. In addition to a poor movie, it didn't help that I was surrounded by the most annoying people...ever. At countless points, two gentlemen in front of me burst out loud with an ear-splitting laugh just screaming of stupidity. It wasn't only at the parts where the movie tried to be funny either. When one of the characters just simply got on his camel, they burst out loud with a roar of a laugh rocking back and forth in their seats. And just for the record, many other people besides me were angry at these men (oafs?). Two people behind me got up during the middle of the movie after another one of the idiots' laughs. Coincidence? I think not...I would much rather have stayed home staring at a blank wall for a couple of hours than have gone to this trash. This movie is what gives adventure/blockbuster movies a bad name.
A little iffy on it, but I liked it anyway.
posted on 31 Jul 2009What was the point of all the crosses, buddhas, etc. ad nauseum? Couldnt this guy pick a faith?!Would the mummy not see the star of david and run away, "ahhhh! not Yahweh again! i'm in deep caca now! Moses is gonna have my hide"?Where did the plagues come from? ISTR that if Seti is killed, then Ramses II is the new pharaoh, and the ten plagues havent happened yet (which, incidentally, were administered by Yahweh, not the masonic gods of egypt), how the @#$! would Imhotep know anything about them if he was buried alive shortly thereafter?!Then again, Imhotep was a scientist, a doctor, and an architect (who built the great pyramid at saqqarah, i might add) under Djeser, not under seti! that would be 4800 years ago, NOT 3,000!And come to think of it, Imhotep was more like our founding fathers than he was a screwed up priest who slaughtered pharaohs. Historically incorrect in the absolute. Ticked me off a little with the "you speak the slave language" crap (altho, this was historically correct - he died long before (according to the film, and history) we were freed from goshen.)Other than that, it was an alright movie. FX were ok, the rendering was crappy with regards to the animated mummy (the basement guy from return of the living dead was more convincing), but the animation/texturing was good.Sure, he can see with the screwed up eyes, but how the heck can he talk without a larynx (or lips, for that matter)?!Acting was so-so, the "me and the mummy scream at each other" bit was stupid, yet funny, as I myself would do such a thing (reminds me of gross anatomy lab - "i lost my sandwich in his mesentary!")The scenery was beautiful. A little advice for the CGI guys at ILM, get a better raytracer - on second thought, GET A RAYTRACER! That scanline stuff only looked good in toy story! That mummy looks like it came off my A500!
good, harmless fun if you're in the mood
posted on 25 Jul 2009Very loosely based on the 1932 horror classic comes this action-packed adventure about a devoted Egyptologist (Weisz) who hires a brash American soldier/treasure hunter (Fraser) to lead her to the allegedly cursed city of Hamunaptra to retrieve an ancient and invaluable Egyptian artifact. Their presence spells doom for all those involved as they inadvertently awaken a powerful, undead Egyptian priest (Vosloo) who carries a dreaded 3,000 year old curse that threatens to obliterate all humanity. Doesn't quite measure up to the Indiana Jones franchise that it closely resembles, but exciting action scenes, good visual effects and scares, and a surprising since of humor make it lots of fun. A little too goofy to be your ideal action-adventure, but a good way to pass the time. ***
Good action/comedy
posted on 23 Jul 2009I saw this movie recently and thought it was pretty good. It had good acting by Brendan Frasier (who was also in "George of the Jungle"). There were, however, some scenes that we could have done without. These were all the scenes in which the scarab beetles crawled into people's bodies and ate them alive. I don't think that scarab beetles really do that (or at least I hope not). Nevertheless, this is a good film and I think that any archaeologist would enjoy it.
Silliness floods Effects
posted on 19 Jul 2009Possibly one of the greatest effects i have ever seen. Beautiful imagery as technicality is brought into life. But seemingly, as the marvelous effects are visually shown, why is the story crossing the bounderies of reality? It is visually good, but the story seems to make nonsense. In the film, we are shown a librarian that has a stunning knowledge of ancient egypt. But with her intellect, how could she fiddle around with a dangerous book, unaware of the great dangers that they might face? The other characters are insensible too. I was looking for a suspense, but i only found a comedy. If you're looking for some great effects, watch it. But i do not recommend you listening to the dialogues anymore. It'll flood the effects. 6/10
One amazing Egyptian Adventure!
posted on 15 Jul 2009The Mummy (1999, Dir. Stephen Sommers) An English librarian called Evelyn Carnahan becomes interested in starting an archaeological dig at the ancient city of Hamunaptra. He gains the help of Rick O'Connell, after saving him from his death. What Evelyn, her brother Jonathan and Rick is unaware of if that another group of explorers are interested in the same dig. Unfortunately for everyone, this group ends up unveiling a curse which has risen the dead High Priest Imhotep. Now 'The Mummy' is awake and it's going to take a lot more than guns to send him back from where he came from. There has been many adaptations of 'The Mummy', but none really have appeared within the new age of digital technology. What we've got here is an amazing adventure through Egypt. The special effects are very good and looks very frightening at times. Are the right actors have been chosen for the roles. You can really see a sinister side of Arnold Vosloo and can really enjoy the comic side of John Hannah. There are some amazing scenery in the film, and some wonderful jokes. It's not the great film, but is still a movie which everyone would enjoy over and over again."He took my eyes!" - Mr. Burns (Tuc Watkins)
Excellent if you love Indiana Jones
posted on 15 Jul 2009Dear Readers,The Mummy is quite a good movie. It has a great all-star cast, neat score by Jerry Goldsmith, excellent acting, and lots of action and fight scenes. There's some gruesome events that are shown off-camera that mature the film up a bit which makes it a little harder to watch than an Indiana Jones Film, since those aren't graphic though a little creepy at some scenes.Thousands of years ago the High Priest of The Pharoh of Egypt, Imhotep, fell in love with the Pharoh's Mistress, Anuck-su-Namun. When the Pharoh Seti discovered the romance Imhotep and Anuck-su-Namun killed him before the Pharoh's Bodyguards. While Escaping, Anuck-su-Namun killed herself, telling Imhotep to resurrect her. Imhotep took Anuck-su-Namun and her vital organs to Hamanaptra, the city of the Dead. His ritual to revive her was stopped by Pharoh's bodyguards, seeking vengeance. Imhotep's priests were condemned to be mummified alive while Imhotep was forced to suffer the Hom Dai, the most feared of all Egyptian curses. His tongue was sliced off and he was placed in a sarcophagus filled with scarabs.Years later a Foreign Legionairre, Rick O'Connell, is asked to lead an expedition to Hamanaptra. Heading the expedition is a young librarian, Evey and her conman brother Johnathan. The threesome embark into the Sahara, followed by a group of Americans who are after Hamanaptra for its treasures and wealth. Watching all of them are the Medjai, the descendants of Pharoh Seti's bodyguards, sworn at Manhood to stop Imhotep from rising from the dead. Both expeditions arrive at Hamanaptra and begin to excavate it with a secret key that Johnathan found. After digging for a while they discover Imhotep's sarcophagus and try to open it with the key while the Americans discover the Book of the Dead, the key to bringing dead people back to life. Evey reads from the book and awakens Imhotep, who begins consuming the lives of all who excavated the city of the Dead and unleash the seven plagues of Egypt. Now the three heroes must battle the ancient Priest who is searching for Anuck-su-Namun's body and a human sacrifice. The Mummy is filled with tons of adventure action. Brendan Frasier is excellent in his role as an action hero while Imhotep is perfect as Imhotep. Rachel Weisz is beautiful as the clumsy Evey and Josh Hannah is a laugh riot as Johnathan. Jerry Goldsmith's score is quite cool and fits in with the movie. Stephen Sommers direction keeps the action coming and coming. The Mummy is an excellent action film, but it's no Indiana Jones.Signed, The Constant DVD Collector
The Band-Aids Are Strong Enough to Hold It All Together.
posted on 15 Jul 2009An imprisoned American (Brendan Fraser) from the French Foreign Legion in 1923 is recruited by an Egyptologist (Rachel Weisz) and her brother (John Hannah) to find a historical book and a plethora of treasures. Before Fraser was initially captured he unwittingly awakened an ancient spirit (Arnold Vosloo) who is able to literally control the desert and the seas with the powers of darkness on his side. He is also on the verge of being reincarnated as a human as he tries to kill individuals in order to resurrect parts of his long-dead physical body. "The Mummy" is a pure action adventure with just enough humor, horror and intelligence to become a neat little journey. Fraser makes an appealing action star and Weisz is an undeniably illuminating actress. The rest of the cast adds well-timed moments to keep the project running as smoothly as possible. Followed by a lesser sequel and an official spin-off ("The Scorpion King"). 4 stars out of 5.
Not at all what I expected. I was pleasantly surprised.
posted on 01 Jul 2009It is rare that I end up going to a movie and get nothing like what I expected. I'll admit that I went into this one with some trepidation as I don't usually go for modern "horror" movies but the special effects in the trailer just looked too good to pass up.Well, it is a good thing that there was more to this movie than cool special effects because all of the really good ones could be seen in the trailer. The movie was, however, anything but a disappointment. The best way to describe this movie would be to make comparisons to the Indiana Jones movies. In fact, this could easily have been a continuation of that series. The hero was very Indy-Like (with some dashes of Han Solo and the hero from Romancing the Stone) with a good dose of humor thrown into the Macho Hero act. There is the beautiful damsel (actually the brains of the outfit), the incompetent tag along, and the mysterious band of strangers. All in all, well cast and appropriately acted. There are some good action sequences, great light hearted banter, and no nudity or blood. The deaths, although sometimes nasty, are bloodless. Most of the special effects budget seems to have been spent on the mummies themselves (pay close attention to how them in the later action sequences) but there are a few good "biggies" in the movie as well.If you are looking for hard core horror, this is not the movie for you. If you are looking for a light action type movie along the Raiders of the Lost Ark style, I think you will be pleased with this one.
Great fun, Weak plot
posted on 17 Jun 2009I had so much fun at this movie, not to mention the two people on each side of me were predicting every next move. Alright, it was a little predictable, and some parts were shocking. The only part that got me was her telling her life story when she was DRUNK! The comedy in the movie was keeping me laughing, and the horror was keeping me on the edge of my seat. I jumped a mile in the air when someone threw a piece of popcorn on me! If you're looking for a movie just of fun and kicks (maybe you might actually get scared!) go see this one.
Sit down, shut up and enjoy it!
posted on 17 Jun 2009I felt the need to comment after reading countless other reviews slating this film. Okay, it doesn't have the most original characters or plot, but it has the element missing from a lot of films coming out these days. Fun! I can safely say that I have never enjoyed going to the cinema so much. It was a feel good movie, and if you stop over-analysing it, you will instantly be drawn in to it. I've owned it on video for some time now and it is one of the few movies I can watch whatever mood I'm in. Those wannabe movie critics who felt the need to trash the plot, characters, historical accuracy, settings, dialogue and just about everything else should get off of their high horses and settle down to enjoy the movie for what it is.Personally I loved the plot, thought the acting was great from the leads and the settings looked fantastic. The action and the romance are wonderfully portrayed. A very special mention for John Hannah who made a potentially annoying character funny and adorable.I recommend this movie to anyone who wants to indulge in a little fantasy escapism.
Quite alright
posted on 15 Jun 2009I'll give this one a solid six. Yes, I enjoyed it quite a lot but there's something that makes this film forgettable. The action was decent, the story was there and the acting were above average. Brendan Fraser as wily adventurer Rick O' Connell is very much like Indiana Jones.Every time I saw him on screen I can't get Indiana Jones out of my head. His portrayal was fairly effective but the thought of him being an Indiana Jones character cannot be avoided.I enjoyed it yes, but this one I will probably forget in a day or two. 6 stars.(I wonder how The Mummy 3 will turn out, its not set in the desert btw)
Popcorn fun anyone???
posted on 09 Jun 2009This was, simply put, a fun movie, not just because of its special effects, but because of its cast. Brendan Fraser was great as the wisecracking Rick O'Connell, as were Rachel Weisz and John Hannah, who enjoyed natural brother-sister chemistry. Oded Fehr was delightfully mysterious as Ardeth Bay and Arnold Vosloo ruled as Imhotep. While admittedly this isn't the most intelligent movie out there, it is still great fun. Given the large amount of comedy in this movie, it's not to be taken too seriously even though some scenes in the movie give it a dark edge.

a basic special effects movie, yet highly entertaining.
posted on 20 Aug 2009At first sight, this movie seems like yet another special-effects blockbuster based on an old story a la Independence Day or Godzilla, but unlike those, it seems to make up for it's uncreative ideas with pure edge of your seat thrills. It features way too many john woo-esque gunfights (which is a very good thing) and periodic spurts of humor (the moment where brendan fraser holds up the cat for Im-Ho-Tep comes to mind), which separates it from other CG effects guidebooks. Although it may not have the legacy of The Phantom Menace or the intricate storyline of the Matrix, the Mummy was still enjoyable
