Behind every great love is a great story.
The movie focuses on an old man reading a story to an old woman in a nursing home. The story he reads follows two young lovers named Allie Hamilton and Noah Calhoun, who meet one evening at a carnival. But they are separated by Allie's parents who dissaprove of Noah's unwealthy family, and move Allie away. After waiting for Noah to write her for several years, Allie meets and gets engaged to a handsome young soldier named Lon. Allie, then, with her love for Noah still alive, stops by Noah's 200-year-old home that he restored for her, "to see if he's okay". It is evident that they still have feelings for each other, and Allie has to choose between her fiancé and her first love.

WOW! Made this guy fall apart at the end...That darn good!!!
posted on 28 Aug 2009Amazing..simply amazing...This is coming from a man who's loves horror/action/gore...But I do like love stories if done right..This one reminded me of the Titanic...Excellent story...Acting superb...But mainly, it was like watching 2 different stories--but at the end is combined into one..perfectly done...I wont ruin the ending, but it is a must see..Ranks right up there with top love movies of all time...I dont think it was bad for teens to see.. There were several love scenes, but were kept very decent...TV shows alot worse..Definately one to remember.. Better than dodgeball/whiteChicks/Terminal(close)/and right there with Shrek2...Go See it!!
Not a Big Deal
posted on 28 Aug 2009Unless you easily cry, you won't be totally moved by this movie.I can't see why it's a big deal. The storyline is generic, the love scene with the rain is generic, and the whole thing is very melodramatic. I can sum up the whole movie in one sentence: Boy meets girl, they fall in love, parents disapprove, they get together in the end. If you're into soap operas, you'll love this, because it practically is one. I almost laughed at some of the overly dramatic scenes. The only good thing I could say about this movie is the visual effect, because the design and costuming was gorgeous.
Not like the book at all.......
posted on 26 Aug 2009If you have read the book, then you will see how much this movie is unlike the book in every aspect. I'm sure the movie would have been better had I not read the book. I know movies are different from their books, but this simple yet amazingly romantic story was lost in this movie that makes it seem like everything happened because of the girl's parents. The typical 80's love story involving parents against their daughter's lover is not what this story is about. If you want real romance and want a story to really relate to, read the novel. The movie leaves out important things such as the letters that Noah and Allie wrote to each other as her condition was progressively getting worse. I watched the movie with my girlfriend and after wards I read her the letters from the book and that made her cry more than the movie's ending which in a way kills the story. How can you make a movie based on a hit-selling novel and COMPLETELY change everything. This movie is more like Bridges of Madison County 2: The Search For a Good Romantic Movie. If you want a romantic movie, rent Bridges of Madison County. If you want to read a romantic novel, read The Notebook, don't settle for the movie.
A great love story
posted on 24 Aug 2009This movie is absolutely amazing. If you're looking for a movie that's warm, good for the whole family, will make you laugh, make you cry - this is it! The Notebook has a great cast, the story is amazing. The first *REAL* love story movie I've ever seen. This movie goes along a pace where almost anyone can follow it. The ending is a huge surprise and caught me completely off guard! There's not one scene in this movie I would change. The scenery is beautiful and it just makes you feel good after you've watched it. It is a tear jerker, though! I highly recommend this movie to anyone of any age. Its a genuine movie and the language isn't bad. That's rare these days.
I fell in LOVE with the movie!
posted on 22 Aug 2009I would just like to say that I absolutely loved it. I thought the actors were awesome! The setting, the music, everything about it was great! I just read a comment that said this movie was not believable. I strongly disagree. The main reason I fell in love with this movie is because my life is very similar to the movie. I know there are so many people out there who have been separated from their true loves, but if it is true, they find their way back to each other. This movie is very real. I know there are so many others who appreciate the movie and it's meaning just as much as I do. I gave it a 10!Thank YouLyndsey
did i miss something?
posted on 21 Aug 2009This was a good love story but how can that girl from a wealthy family and lifestlye so quickly fall in love with that boy from the other side of the track, financially speaking? Also when he jumped on that ferris wheel you would have to be a very trained stuntman before pulling that off! Also I noticed the boy all of the sudden grew nice thick facial hair to make him look older. come on now, that is too obvious for my taste. Plus any boy who takes pleasure in laying on the street in the middle of the night surely has some problems upstairs which makes me curious as to why such a nice good looking girl would ever join him, on the street. A lot of people were crying during this movie, not me though because I was too upset that other people around me would think i was the one crying. I have tears to shed but not for this movie. Ok, it wasn't a bad film but just not for me, thanks.
Beautiful tribute to love
posted on 18 Aug 2009"The Notebook" is a story of love, specifically of the Love between Noah (played by Ryan Gosling and James Garner)and Allie (played by Rachel McAdams and Gina Rowlands). This movies should touch everyone's heart that watches it. There is not a person that hasn't felt drawn back toward a first love, nor is there a person who doesn't wish for and look for a love that will last a lifetime - someone to be passionate with, to laugh with, to argue with, to be with when things are difficult and to grow old with. This movie is a tribute to a love that surpasses all other loves. This is a beautiful movie and - even with some sexual scenes, is suitable for all audiences that are old enough to understand love between a man and a woman.
Good film but the book is better

A story of young love that ends early but is never forgotten. Set in North Carolina, the story of Noah Calhoun and Allie Hamilton is brought to life by an older man reading from a notebook to a woman suffering from Alzheimer's.
I found Ryan Gosling to be excellent with his performance as Noah Calhoun. Gosling usually plays dark, intense characters but his intensity shows through in his conviction of the love he feels for Allie played by Rachel McAdams. While Gosling was perfection,I found McAdams performance to be only alright. I don't know if it was how the character of Allie was written or if it was because I only see McAdams as Regina from Mean Girls.
I also couldn't help but compare the movie to the book. While Noah in the book was quiet, contemplative, and just an all around dreamer,Gosling's character seemed to be more rough around the edges.
I was really excited when I found out that this was being made into a movie. I wanted to see how the book paralleled the movie. While the film is really good, I just liked the book way better. I recommend this film but read the book first.
Magnificent; the acting, the location, the story
posted on 14 Aug 2009It has been less than 24 hours since I rented the DVD, but the thoughts and images from the movie have stayed with me. It has been several years, perhaps since Somewhere in Time when I was a teenager, that I have been so affected by a film. The story is magnificent in it's simplicity. The acting is magnificent in the apparent endearment of the actors to their roles and their place in the story. The locations are magnificent in their pristine and uncluttered and unpolluted place not only as a part of geography but as a part in time. I will see this movie again, damn the late fees, and I will buy it as well as the novel on my next trip to a place that sells either. This movie is a treasure and ashames me to think that I have ever said that I have loved someone.
The "Ben-Hur" of 21st century tear-jerkers
posted on 14 Aug 2009"The Notebook" is a story everyone in the world has heard a million times before; young Romeo-and-Juliet summer love which is tossed and turned continuously by opposing outside forces. We've read it a hundred times before we start the first chapter, know the conclusion before we see the end of the film, and can relate it to so many moments from the past relationships of our lives. But what makes this film different from others is one main thing; beauty.Never before have I been moved this emotionally by a romance. From the moment is starts, you get sucked right in. You're totally involved in in these characters and unlike many romantic films I've watched, you actually care about what happens. The love between Allie and Noah is so passionate and so vivid yet real and universal for any age. Any viewer will stay connected with the story for the film's length and will be moved long after the credits stop rolling. No matter how many times you've seen movies with the exact same plot, I promise you you'll appreciate every second of "The Notebook". I think the world could use a few more movies like this. It truly shows that love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Just beautiful.
A movie I can watch over and over again.
posted on 12 Aug 2009The Notebook is a movie that is so beautiful and touching that it get better every time I watch it.Allie Hamilton(Rachel Mcadams) Is the beautiful daughter of a rich man who is on holiday with her family in a country town. One evening she goes to a carnival and meets Noah Calhoun(Ryen Gossling). They fall in love and spend every moment together until Allie's parent disapprove of Noah being a poor boy. Allie moves to New York and in seven years time Allie gets engaged to a rich man named Lon(James Mecades). Noah builds the house he promised he would build for Allie. She sees the house in the paper comes to visit him, They realise that they are in still in love with each other and make up for the times they missed together. Allie must then choose between Noah And Lon.This movie is beautiful, romantic and touching. It is one of my all time favorite movies. It reminds me of the classic romantic movies of the 50s. It is is a fun movie to watch over and over again. The music is beautiful. The acting is grate. I love all of the outfits that Allie wears. The notebook is one of the best love storys of all time. If you enjoy movies like Romeo and Juliet'Titanic and A walk to remember. You will absolutely love this movie! I really loved this movie and I Will rate it a 10/10!
-*the most romantic love story since TITANIC*-
posted on 11 Aug 2009THE NOTEBOOK truly has to be one of the most romantic love stories ever told. It reminds you that true love is everlasting, is enduring, can come from the strangest places & can make you do crazy things, but most importantly, when you share the kind of love that Noah & Alli did, love can do anything you want it to - even create miracles.
I loved all the characters, but Ryan Gosling & Rachel McAdams had the best on-screen chemistry I have seen in a long time. They look awesome together, & they are both AmAzInG actors. Ryan Gosling usually plays dark, intense characters in films such as MURDER BY NUMBERS & THE BELIEVER, and we've seen Rachel McAdams play snobby, prissy roles in films such as MEAN GIRLS & THE HOT CHICK. Though both new to the "romantic" role, they were perfect for their parts. The setting was perfect as well. It was so beautiful, & s0o0o romantic! Also, James Garner & Gena Rowlands portray the sick, aging old couple that is still madly in love wonderfully.
This movie is one of the best I have ever seen, & I plan to see it again & buy the DVD when it is released. It will make you both laugh & cry (bring LoTs of kleenex!). Knowing that this story came from the story of Spark's wife's grandparents' love story, it makes you realize that a lot of fiction comes from real experiences, and that true, enduring love is very real. The film's message was so deep & genuine that you can't help but feel as though you're a part of the story. I highly recommend it, as well as the book (I must add that Noah Calhoun is the BeSt character Nicholas Sparks has ever created, & he has created some pretty great characters!). Both are well worth every penny that you spend! :-)
A Truly Wonderful Romance
posted on 09 Aug 2009OMG - What a truly wonderful heartwarming romance movie!! I have to rate "The Notebook" right up there among my all time favorites including "Titanic", "Sweet Dreams" (story of Patsy Cline), "Coal Miner's Daughter", and "Pretty Woman"!
I've watched this movie over a dozen times, and even though I own the DVD, I continue to watch it every time it appears on TV! I just can't seem to get enough of watching this movie, and enjoy it each time - just as much as I did the first time I saw it!!
A superior cast, comprised of some of my favorite actors, really shine in bringing this beautiful heartwarming love story to life! Rachel McAdams is an absolute doll and just sparkles in her role as beautiful, charming, sophisticated, bubbly, energetic, full of life - young Allie. I've always admired and enjoyed Gena Rowlands in her past movie roles, and believe this role as Allie, in present day time, is among one of her best roles, yet!
Movie veteran, James Garner, is a delight as present day Noah, and as for young Noah, portrayed by Ryan Gosling - Hey, what can I say except -
OMG, what a cutie!! No wonder Allie fell head-over-heels in love with him - right along with every other female on the planet that has ever seen this movie! Lol
All in all, it is definitly a "must-have" to add to your romance movie collection!
A True Love Story From Beginning To End
posted on 06 Aug 2009You don't find many movies like The Notebook. Sure, there are many loves stories, too many, actually. They all follow the same formula and you know the ending from the time the lights go down. The Notebook is also a love story; it's a formulaic movie that you already know the end of. What makes it different is that it's the story of one couples relationship from start to finish.
Allie (Rachel McAdams) and Noah (Ryan Gosling) meet at a carnival the summer that Allie is seventeen. She's high society spending the summer in Seabrook. He doesn't have a dime to his name. It's the classic tale of love, the rich girl and the boy her parents don't approve of. Despite, they fall in love. Fast-forward twenty years, Allie's about to marry to a man of money. But that wouldn't be fitting in this story of true love, would it? The movie is based off the novel by Nicholas Sparks (A Walk To Remember, Message In A Bottle). Like his previous two book-into-movie adaptations, the focus is on the story and not the characters. These stories do not specialize in developing well-rounded characters. To enjoy The Notebook, you have to suspend reality in this aspect. Noah appears to the audience as the perfect boy, who's just too nice, too sweet. His character is always staring at Allie with sad, puppy dog eyes, even after twenty-five years. But, if you accept that this is the character, Ryan Gosling's performance is good. It's strong and believable. Rachel McAdams who's previous film this year was Mean Girls, takes a complete turn form that and gives the best performance of the movie. This may be because her character is the written better than anyone else's.
The true achievement of The Notebook is in the portrayal of first love, the summer romance. McAdams and Gosling have a great chemistry that is not just a physical attraction but, even in their quarrels, they still radiate a deep friendship that helps underline the point of The Notebook. Fortunately, the portion of the movie with McAdams and Gosling is more than the part with the older versions of themselves (James Garner and Joan Allen). Garner is reading from the notebook to Allen. She is stricken with Alzheimers and he's convinced that if he reads the story to her enough, his Allie will remember. It's touching and sweet but not as accurately done as the former. From mistakes in the medical aspects of it, to the leap of faith the last scene makes, it comes up more scattered than the rest. It's not an amazing movie but from the material it's based on, it could have been much worse. The excellent performances by the whole cast and the heart that is shown make it a decent film. It's not one that will stand the test of time as an amazing love story but it's worth seeing. Though it's a tearjerker, it's also hopeful in the best way.

it's simple
posted on 29 Aug 2009It's this simple. This is the best love story on movie i've seen in a while.
