The Outlaw Josey Wales Movie
Storyline
TAGLINES
...an army of one.
Josey Wales is a peaceful farmer in the days near the end of the Civil War. After his home is burned and his family murdered, he hardens into a human bullet - dedicated to destroying the renegades who took his "life." He joins a band of unreconstructed rebel guerilla fighters who continue to fight the Union - even after the official surrender of the Confederacy - an action which makes them, legally, outlaws. Josey is driven by vengeance, but after a while, that's not enough. Back before his own personal Holocaust, he had been a builder - of home, family, farm, and life. And no matter how much ice he's wrapped himself in, down inside there's still the soul of a living man. While Wales exists, he's pulled by this hidden yearning to Live. Each day offers him chances to remember, to assuage his yearning, to begin again. And the movie shows us how Josey Wales - a mere seeker of vengeance - learns to live again, rededicated to the values he chose so long ago.

Eastwood's Best
posted on 31 Aug 2009The Outlaw Josey Wales is certainly one of the best Westerns ever made--and the best movie of Eastwood's career. Classic lines include: "Dying ain't much of a living, boy." (to a bounty-hunter, hunting Wales) "Are you going to pull them pistols, or whistle Dixie?" (to Union soldiers hunting Wales) An all-time classic!
Josey Wales is the Best
posted on 31 Aug 2009If you haven't seen this movie (it doesn't matter whether you hate Clint Eastwood) -- it is a must see! It is a best-of-class western and an intensely riveting story. The horsemanship, gunslinging, and lonesome drifting is set against a backbeat of rebirth and renewal. Eastwood is a sage revenge seeker who seeks an end to his own ravaging of the world around him. Josey is a legend -- both the man and the movie.
One of the best westerns ever made.
posted on 31 Aug 2009I saw "Josie Wales" when it was first released in 1976. I thought then and I still think it goes largely unrecognized as one of the greatest western movies ever made. Besides being good Eastwood, it is full of colorful characters and a sure fire plot to boot. The DVD version just adds good sound and clarity to the original.
is it better than Unforgiven?
posted on 31 Aug 2009I love this movie. When Unforgiven first came out and it was winning all those awards, I had friends (Eastwood fanatics all) tell me what a great movie it was, Eastwood's best, blah, blah... I always said, "Yes, but is it a better movie than Outlaw Josey Wales?" That always gave them pause, because, even now, Outlaw Josey Wales is one powerful movie.
I love Unforgiven, but Outlaw Josey Wales is still my favorite Eastwood western and the DVD looks great. Sharp picture, widescreen picture. Buy it now and decide for yourself: Unforgiven or Outlaw Josey Wales?
One of the best westerns ever made.....
posted on 31 Aug 2009I have seen this western many times on tape and my copy of the movie had started to lose its luster. When I heard it was coming on DVD, I knew I would see the film as Clint Eastwood intended it.
As far as a film is concerned, it is a very good tale of revenge and devotion to friends. Eastwood is great as the title character and the film has some very good supporting performances. The exteriors where the film was shot are beautiful and are just as good on DVD as in reality.
The DVD is a great, inexpensive version of a great Western. The 16:9 widescreen version of the film highlights the colors and tones that were filmed by Eastwood. The color is good as well as the Dolby 5.1 Surround Soundtrack. There is also a French soundtrack (which is very humorous when Eastwood utters the best line of the film, "You going to pull them pistols or whistle Dixie"). The disc also contains trailers to many other Westerns as well as the trailer for Outlaw Josey Wales.
You should not miss this great DVD. The price is right and the movie is one of Eastwood's best. This is one of the better looking westerns that I have in my DVD collection. If you love great westerns and movies about the American Civil War, you will love this DVD!
The best Western ever made!
posted on 31 Aug 2009This movie is by far one of the best Westerns to ever be made. Clint is a tough, mean, and brilliant outlaw who really knows how to kick butt. His one liner's are hilarious and his character is one guy who you would never want to mess with. Definitely a must see among action and Western fans.
Simply put:
posted on 31 Aug 2009Eastwood's best film, the finest Western of the 70s, and one of the finest films, period. Magnificent, bloody, and ultimately extremely touching, THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES puts a spin on the revenge Western, for this is a tale of forgetting revenge, and finding a way to live again. "Dying is easy for men like us. It's living that's hard." Already an established classic. And it needs to be seen in widescreen.
A must see movie
posted on 31 Aug 2009The movie has all the aspect of real life drama. A typical issue of how wars affects everyone from murdering, raping, looting, etc... However, Outlaw Josey Wales is a movie that holds your attention until the conclusion of the movie. Not only is the movie has all the ingredients of a great movie but the set and location brings you to the past. It is like seeing history in the making.
Classic and flawless Eastwood
posted on 31 Aug 2009If you can get over the fact that it's a western, Outlaw Josey Wales is Eastwood's best film, as both as actor and director. I like his "Dirty Harry" subject matter better, but "Josey" is beautifully paced, timeless, and an endless volley of wit and digs between Josey and the others. Particularly heartwarming are the scenes between Josey and the Chief (and when you read Eastwood's recent biography, it becomes clear how difficult those scenes were to complete). If you're an Eastwood fanatic, this film is THE ONE!!!
Greatest Western Ever
posted on 31 Aug 2009In my opinion, this is the greatest western movie ever made. No one makes a better western than Clint Eastwood and he outdid himself on this one. The scene at the end with Ten Bears is classic. This one has some of the best movie lines ever including "The hell with those guys, buzzards gotta eat same as worms".
Number one on my list
posted on 31 Aug 2009I really can't think of a movie I enjoy more.
A southern farmer's life is ruined by raiding northern soldiers. He leaves his life behind, learns to shoot, joins the Confederate army, and is among the last of the holdouts. He's persued cross-country by a noble-countenanced villain, collects a fascinating troop of companions through reluctant heroism, and makes his final stand!
A tough but heartwrenchingly tragic hero, gunslinging action, history, action, snappy dialogue, and genuine character-- every character in the movie comes to vivid life, effortlessly! Paper cannot hold my words of iron in praise of this movie!
One of Eastwood's finest hours
posted on 31 Aug 2009In recent years, Clint Eastwood's "The Outlaw Josey Wales" has been elevated to a higher plain than it occupied when released in summer 1976. Praised by a handful of critics, the film did well at the box-office but really acquired a following through no less than six highly rated airings on NBC, ABC, and CBS. Now it's often considered Eastwood's finest hour as director and star, even surpassing his Oscar winning "Unforgiven" in some eyes. Among its fans was the late Orson Welles who praised it as one of the finest Westerns ever made, and praised Eastwood as a director worthy of notice long before it was fashionable to do so. In 1996, Eastwood's fifth film as a director was even recognized by the Library of Congress when it was added to the National Film Registry, that collection of films deemed historically, artistically, and/or sociologically important and deserving of protection from tampering by anyone but the original director.
At first glance, I found it overlong and meandering, enlivened only occasionally by some trademark Eastwood gunplay. But if it's a little short on the action for which Eastwood made his name, repeated viewings make it clear that there is much more happening beneath the surface. The Outlaw Josey Wales is very much a film about community and trying to find a place in one. Josey Wales is an outlaw only because he avenged the death of his family at the hands of murderous Union soldiers. Now a hunted man, this peaceful farmer is an Angel of Death wandering the west in search of vengeance but also a place to call home. Its scope is much bigger than the revenge tale at its center, and the film represents an important step in Eastwood's maturation as a director.
Beautifully photographed, splendidly acted (especially by John Vernon), and capably directed, "The Outlaw Josey Wales" is one of Eastwood's finest hours (although "Unforgiven" is superior in my book), and one of the finest hours for the western, as well.

Well formatted for DVD
posted on 31 Aug 2009The Outlaw Josey Wales is obviously a 5 star movie, but the DVD format is a diffent subject. This DVD format is excellent. Classic movie; very well formatted for DVD.
