Perhaps the Most Disappointing Horror Sequel since The Exorcist 2!

posted on 26 Aug 2009

When I entered the large theater that was showing 'The Ring Two' I didn't know what to expect. Whenever one goes and sees a sequel, they have to expect the likelihood of it being not as good as it's predecessor. For me, the original 2002 movie 'The Ring' was a creepy, deeply-disturbing, and fun thrill ride that had me going from start to finish. I could only hope this long-awaited follow-up would be half as spellbinding as the first, since the movie trailers made it look spectacular. I was dead wrong. This bloated, over-written, over-acted, suspense-lacking hunk of movie crap was a big waste of a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The most disappointing aspect of this film has to be the lack of terror. The original provided me with one of the most frightening movie experiences I've had in my life, and this film didn't even get me to jump. Well, maybe I jumped once, but that is pretty pathetic for a self-described horror flick. The film's storyline borrows from almost every other horror movie from the past thirty-five years. Whether it's 'The Exorcist' (the little weird-looking kid gets possessed by Samura - oooohhh), or 'The Village of the Damned' (the possessed brat gets a perky R.N. to inject herself with an air-filled syringe). The direction of the film goes downhill, since the director of 'The Ring' , Gore Verbinski, decided to pass on this installment of the series (good move, Gore!). Verbinski (who is probably best known for his direction of 2003's big blockbuster 'Pirates of the Caribbean') provided immensely better camera work and scene transitions than this time-around's Hideo Nakata (the director of the original Japanese version of the 'The Ring' entitled 'Ringu', which also was a bit of a snorer). The acting is dreadful almost all the way around except for a decent and impassioned performance by the great Aussie actress Naomi Watts (who is way above a film like this). There are three interesting cameos in 'The Ring Two'; one by Elizabeth Perkins as the perky R.N., the second by Office Space's Gary Cole as a Realtor trying to sell the Morgan House Farm (instead of telling interested buyers that the Morgans both committed suicide because of their deranged little girl, he tells them they bought a condo in Phoenix, Arizona - HAH!). The third cameo of the film is perhaps the most noteworthy and regrettable -- Sissy Spacek (in a two minute role) as Samura's birth mother who tried to drown her twisted daughter after she botched a kitchen table abortion (no wonder the little girl is P.O'd.) It's not that Spacek does a bad job, she actually does a good job, it's just this film is unbelievably underneath the star of 'The Coal Miner's Daughter' and 'In the Bedroom'. Although most of it is disappointing, 'The Ring Two' has some very good qualities. The film's cinematography is excellent and they kept the same eerie music score that makes your skin crawl. All in all, 'The Ring Two' isn't worth the price of admission. It isn't even worth a video rental. Wait until HBO and you won't regret it. Now, let's just pray they don't make 'The Ring Three'. If they do, might I suggest 'The Ring Three: The Bathtub Ring'. Grade: C- (screened at AMC Deer Valley 30, Phoenix, Arizona, 3/19/05)

Before You Die, Don't See The Ring...Two!

Like Poltergeist meets Mommy Dearest! During our venture out for Ring 2, we hoped to find a big budget horror sequel with even more bang for our buck. All we can really say is that the movie delivered a whole stampede of bucks but no bangs whatsoever.Following on the trilogy trend of its Japanese predecessors, the Ring series will most likely now sink after generating such fatally high expectations. Yes, there we've actually admitted to it, we had such high hopes for this one! The buzz began with a repackaged DVD duo that was released a few short months prior to Ring 2 in an effort to hype ticket sales. This limited 2-DVD set reminded all tense fans of the Ring's famed tag line...before you die, you see the ring! After seeing Ring 2, death just ain't quick enough. As most expected, the fiendish celluloid ghoul returns from the well to strut around a couple of central characters in another town of suburbanites. The story is a bit hackneyed but the actors probably did the best with what they were handed prior to filming. A smattering of special effects provided some glib conversation after the movie but that's about it.Unfortunately the overall goal of this movie is to be a horror sequel. Right? It's really really not. I only jumped once during Ring 2 and that was because I almost nodded off while suffering through it.

Sequels are never as good as the first!

I love Naomi watts (rent Mulholland Drive!), and she made the best out of a shady plot line in Ring Two. If i had directed it, i would not have repeated some of the needles points (another boyfriend, another death etc). the special effects were fantastic (water on the ceiling in bathroom). the other commenter was correct to say that Rachel had a 'motherly moment' with Samara in the first Ring movie in the well, just before the little girl disintegrated. give this movie a break. it's not the best, it's not the worst. if it bores you, turn it off. why stay tuned for 90+ mins so that you can whine about how bad it was? yes they are making a Ring 3; plot not determined. i wish there was more video copying/chasing in this movie too, but the director wanted to try something new.if you really want a great movie that's creepy, but MAKES SENSE, watch Hide and Seek with Robert DeNiro and Dakota Fanning!Otherwise, just enjoy this movie for ENTERTAINMENT.

Cheap Addition to a once great Film

The Ring Two...wow. What can I say? I admit, I jumped a few times, and there was some wonderful acting...Thats all the good...Now, the crap...the crap is, well, everything else. There's a flock of deer that look like they just hopped out of the next Shrek movie along with a ghostly samara whom looks like she just finished a wet and wild scene on the set of Toy Story..also, a terrible twist involving a parallel universe inside the Video, wish is totally bull crap. Also this movie contains the color and happiness of the Wizard of Oz (second half)not like the faded/blueish filter used last time... And finally, nearly no reference, referrals, resemblance, or even due credit to the First...It was a let down, with a bad ending and a crappy ass plot...my rating..MAKE A BETTER Sequel!

Not as good as the first but still spooky and worth watching

posted on 04 Aug 2009

For me this one did not play as well as the first. The change in direction of the story worked reasonably well but seemed a little forced and patched together. The young boy (Aidan) played by Davis Dorfman was extremely irritating and did interfere with the enjoyment of the film.Despite these criticisms the film was still quite spooky in places and quite enjoyable.Worth seeing, especially when alone, though I would say that rather than taking the story to the next level it presented itself as the trailing edge to The Ring

"The Grudge" , "Darkness" and "Boogyman" all rolled into one big piece of s**t

Naomi Watts, Simon Baker, David Dorfman, Elizabeth Perkins, Gary Cole, Sissy Spacek, Ryan Merriman, Emily Vancamp and Kelly Overton. Directed by Hideo Nakata. The sequel to the original Ring (directed by Gore Verbinski) is dull, boring, lame, not scary and quite possibly the worst horror movie ever made. Based on the original movie Ringu directed by Hideo Nakata that started the Ring crave along with crappy look-a likes (The Grudge, Darkness, Ring 2, Boogyman, Skeleton Key, Dark Water). Six months after Rachel Keller (Watts) and her son, Aidan (Dorfman, doing his best to imitate Dakota Fanning) escape their run-in with the evil video tape and the ghost girl Smara. Now they move to a small quiet town in Oregon looking to start anew. The movie tries to make you jump and scream but... My final rating 0/10.

A curious but non-sensical sequel

posted on 31 Jul 2009

Rachel and Aiden have relocated to a sleepy town in the Pacific Northwest, but unfortunately another tape resurfaces. Why Rachel is surprised, after the brilliant pre-apocalyptic final scene in the first film, is way beyond me. In fact, the main problem with "The Ring Two" seems to be that Nakata never sat down and watched the US remake of his "Ringu." Still, it isn't nearly as bad of a film as many have suggested. It has a unique directorial style and features a great performance by Naomi Watts, which doesn't seem rushed even though she didn't want to make the film due to a busy schedule. Unfortunately, the other bigger names in the film (Sissy Spacek, Simon Baker, Elizabeth Perkins) are nothing more than glorified cameos. The short film "Rings," which is included on the DVD, is required viewing before watching this sequel.

A bad sequel?

posted on 29 Jul 2009

*6.5/10, actually.A bad film? Really? I think the Ring Two goes in a different direction than the first, that's for sure, and it's definitely a little less dark, a little more mainstream-innocuous, and considerably breaks it's own rules, but as a sequel I don't think it's too bad, at least worthy of somewhere between a six and seven out of ten.The Ring is known for it's bleak tone, and this is very bright in its cinematography, and that matters to some people. And this is considerably less scary, and is generally less disturbing, but I don't really think that makes it a bad film. I think it's definitely different from the first one, is all.The young actor David Dorfman is better in this one, and I think Naomi Watts and Simon Baker are worthy of praise. That's my own personal bias, obviously, because in a general sense I think Naomi Watts is underrated, but I digress. The Ring Two isn't really bad at all. It's slightly pretentious, and the CGI deer are just silly, but I think slightly weak as a sequel as it may be, it's still an enjoyable mystery film, even though it definitely doesn't deliver the chills of it's predecessor.

Teeth-grindingly boring and completely devoid of terror sequel

THE RING 2 (2005) * Naomi Watts, David Dorfman, Kelly Stables, Daveigh Chase, Simon Baker, Elizabeth Perkins, Sissy Spacek, Gary Cole, Ryan Merriman, Emily VanCamp. Teeth-grindingly boring and completely devoid of terror sequel to the Japanese remake of the cult horror flick with journalist Watts (severely dumbed down inexplicably since the first film) and her spooky kid (Dorfman suggesting an exhumed Culkin) attempt to relocate but are literally haunted by the damn videotaped ghost-in-the-machine Samara (Chase and Stables doing double duty) who wants nothing but vengeance. A severe case of 'been-there-done-that' only underscores the infuriatingly ridiculous plot holes and consistently dopey screenplay by Ehren Kruger (who scribed the first one) and Hideo Nakata's pedestrian direction only suffers when it is realized he directed the original Japanese version to begin with! When the hell will they realize to simply go to DVD?!?!

Uncreative rehashing of the first movie

posted on 25 Jul 2009

I did not expect the sequel to live up to the first movie, especially since a different director was involved, but even with lowered expectations I was still disappointed that they weren't able to produce a better experience to honor the first movie. The sequel doesn't really add anything to the story of the first and some parts of the plot are essentially copied and redone from the first movie (sadly, these are the better parts of the movie). It left me with the feeling that most of the sequel could have been included on the original movie's DVD as deleted scenes or alternate scenes. The new director takes away a lot of the frightening power of the Samara character by showing her so frequently throughout the movie that I was used to seeing her towards the end. The original director got a lot more out of the scary scenes of the first movie, but he also had a good story to work with.I do not recommend this movie to anyone that enjoyed the first. More of the same with less execution just isn't very satisfying.

A huge disappointment

I was expecting this movie to be even better than the first Ring. The first movie was incredible. I was expecting the same eerie, creepy atmosphere, the feeling of impending doom, the scares, the deep plot. And what did I get? None of the above. I felt cheated. This movie was actually boring! I never thought it would be. I waited so long to see it. I was so excited! And it was all shot down. Samara tries to take human form, and she picks Aiden. It isn't creepy in the least bit! The one creepy part was when Samara was crawling up the wall of the well. That's it! In the entire movie! And there wasn't even a single good scare! This movie could have been made a whole lot better. You should see it once, just to say you've seen it, but I wouldn't buy it, or even watch it again. It had a lot to live up to, but it could have tried a lot harder.

Ridiculous! Awful! Don't See It!

Save your money! Save your time! For the love of god, save yourself! Unless, of course, you like sterile and and bizarre digital effects sloppily attached to an anorexically contrived script and prozac induced directing and acting. Because if that's your thing, and it doesn't bother you to watch mass produced and mass consumed average fare, and eleven bucks doesn't mean anything to you, and neither does two hours of your life, then, and only then, can you truly think "I got my money's worth." There are some pretty colors in it -- it takes place in a Pacific coastal town in Oregon. Lots of blues and greens. The teals. The aquas. My favorite.

Fear comes...maybe half circle.

The Ring was my favourite film of 2002, the best horror film I'd seen in ages, and I subsequently saw and enjoyed (with the exception of Ring 0 - What the hell was that?) all the Japanese films as well.So when I heard that the director of the original films was set to do the second "remake", it was suitably excited. Imagine what he could do with a bigger budget and better technology? It is however, not even close to the first, and such improvements don't surface (same CGI, C-list Hallmark Channel cast). It does manage to keep you nervous throughout, but the proper scares are too infrequent and it appears to take itself too seriously. This is all too evident when the creepiest kid in cinema is admitted to hospital and The Ring 2 turns into a child abuse drama for around twenty minutes, leaving you wondering when it'll pick up a bit again. It's also the kind of film that demands that you re-watch the first one before you go to see it; the opening makes no sense unless you've seen "Rings" on the Collectors Edition DVD, and there's a ton of stuff that may have easily been forgotten if you saw the film three years ago. It's alright; it's a horror sequel-remake thing, so you don't expect too much and you wont be disappointed, but you can't help but think it could have been done a bit better.

Will she ever stop? Samatra is back and more determined than ever to win over Rachel's motherhood!

Will Samara ever stop. Rachel and Aiden really needed and wanted to get on with life and Samara is back and more deadly than ever. This film is more to show sympathy for Samara and to understand the loss that she faced. i think that this film is a musty see and it really says everything for itself. There is no beating this horror and sympathetic character and her complicated characteristics. i think that when Rachel understood that Samara was back and would not stop a certain fear came over her, and the relationship between Adian and Samara is extraordinary in the way that they are one person in two different times and places. Samara is the voice of all those children who need a loving family and a place in some body's heart. If i could meet and know Samara i think all i would do is give her a hug and let her know that is all going to be alright. The effects of this film are really effective and make you know what it is to be wanted. All I'm going to say now is SEVEN DAYS!

Ringed-Out

Well, After seeing the movie, there's still one thing I can't figure out. Which is more confusing, the fact that the movie un-winded the way that it did, or the fact that anyone on this planet could of found the movie totally scary?.. there both really quite mind boggling.Truth be told, I think the Ring 2 could of been a lot worse though. They attempted to put more story behind it then a bunch of kids passing around a video tape and getting killed one by one in typical horror fashion. Although the story itself grew increasingly stupid and confusing right up towards the end, it played out a lot differently then I thought it would when i first seen that they were doing the sequel. The acting was terrible, but I still don't believe that should be a factor in a horror movie, cmon we wanna be scarred and just like any horror movies as of late, the ring 2 just couldn't deliver. But if you saw the first one and enjoyed it, your best bet is probably to go rent this one when it comes out, its nothing worth rushing into your theater too see.

The Ring Two Is The Best Sequel Ever!

posted on 09 Jul 2009

I absolutely loved this movie! I saw it yesterday with a bunch of friends and we had the best time. The movie starts off where The Ring left off unlike other movies. It basically begins when a teenager knows that his time is up and the only way to live is to show the movie to another friend. He picks a lonely girl to watch it who is expecting a little more then a scary movie. He thinks that his plan is successful when he gets the girls to watch it but thinks twice when hes sees water leaking under his kitchen door. The beginning of the movie is great so you don't HAVE to see the first ring to even get the second one. Samara is creepier then ever and adding a few extra characters (Samara's mom, Evelen, and a new co worker friend)helps the movie out a lot. This movie is worth the 8 dollars I paid for it on Friday night and I think everyone else will agree!

Not as good as the first, but I loved it anyway…

One dark night, similar to the one in the first installment, a teen named Jake decides to invite his friend Emily over to his house. He tells her that he has something in his possession that is guaranteed to scare her. He pops a tape into the VCR, and leaves the room, leaving the poor girl alone in the room. She doesn't know anything about this tape, and neither does he. He calls a friend, and tells him that she is watching the tape as they speak. But while he is talking, he notices a viscous black fluid seeping through the room from underneath the door. Frightened, he calls her name, but when she doesn't answer, he goes to see what the matter is. He runs into the room to save her, and ends up dead…Rachel Keller has relocated to Astoria, Oregon with her beloved son Aidan. They are trying to adjust to a new life after the terrible events of the past year. Aidan is attending his new school, while Rachel is working at a newspaper, continuing her career in journalism. But then the devilish girl begins to haunt her again after Rachel goes to investigate Jake's death. Aidan is sent to a hospital, and the doctor, played quite well by Elizabeth Perkins, accuses Rachel of child abuse. With her son at stake, Rachel seeks the help of Evelyn, (Sissy Spacek), and then it's another crazy encounter with Samara Morgan. Not as good as the first, but still quite chilling, The Ring Two is a must see for those who enjoy horror films and psychological thrillers. With Naomi Watts, Simon Baker, David Dorfman, Elizabeth Perkins, Gary Cole, Sissy Spacek, Ryan Merriman and Emily Van Camp

Met my expectations

posted on 25 Jun 2009

This sequel fulfilled my expectations because the story is developed with new ideas and there were many scary moments. The soundtrack was good and the picture had high quality. What I didn't like therefore was the performance of the little boy. I think he acted too passive and showed not enough emotional profile. Naomi Watts also didn't convince me as the mother of the little boy and I expected more from her. Then, as I am father of a little son I cannot add this one to my best-of-DVD-collection because it contains too many violent scenes. I simply don't want this horror movie gets in touch with my son. Final rating: 5,5/10. If you liked it don't miss the first one. It works not only as a horror but also as a psycho-thriller movie.

What did I just watch?

When I loaded the IMDb page for The Ring Two, the headlining comment at the time stated that it lacks everything that made the first American adaptation good. I agree with this sentiment. What makes it ironic is that Hideo Nakata, the esteemed director of Ringu, was brought in to direct this mess. The presence of one name in the credits, however, brings me to believe that the overall mess has to do with the screenplay. You guessed it, Ehren Kruger, the man who first came into prominence with Scream 3, wrote The Ring Two. Granted, he also wrote the first American adaptation of the Japanese Ringu films, but director Gore Verbinski was able to wrestle a decent final product out of his raw material. It appears that Hideo Nakata thought he was up to the task of wrestling a decent end product out of Ehren Kruger's writing. He proved himself quite wrong. The actors do the best they can, and David Dorfman does a lot less sleepwalking in this episode, but I believe this film can be credited with killing off any chance of further Ringu adaptations.Of course, the acting is good enough to pass muster, as was the case in the previous Ring. Naomi Watts is a surprisingly competent actor, given that her credits include a stint on the Australian soapie I like to call Please Go Away. Once again, she goes through the standard motions expected of a Scream Queen with championship pride. All the clichés are present and accounted for, but she shrugs them off like she is right at home in her environment. Then again, when one has worked for David Lynch, I suppose even creepy scenes such as the emergences of Samara from the TV set seem routine. However, when you get right down to it, Watts is the only real star in the film. Much was made of Sissy Spacek's role in the film, but it has turned out to be one of the most overstated walk-ons in the history of the genre. It was not until I viewed the IMDb credits for the film that I was even aware of her appearance in the film. David Dorfman, as previously intimated, has been given less of a zombie-like appearance in this film, but in so doing, his character also becomes a lot less interesting. The visual effects of the previous Ring were mainly limited to one instance of a girl crawling out of the television set, combined with some practical effects or trick editing. In this sequel, there are endless shots of water flowing in unnatural directions, people being sucked in and out of televisions, or people polymorphing. The plot feels like a blur, and I was only able to catch fragments relating to some lost relative of Samara's or how she is able to torment the family in spite of all the conditions being met in the first film for her to leave them be. In short, I was given little reason to care about the machinations that the central characters go through this time. Without a decent character to hang our cares upon, the film's sense of horror or terror literally falls apart. It does not help that we have no idea what the framework of rules regarding what Samara can or cannot do is meant to be.As I said, a previous commentator has stated that The Ring Two lacks everything that made The Ring good. Suspense? It is on the cutting room floor. Terror? The framework for it was never there to begin with. Horror? It appears the director would not know it if they were formally introduced. New lead Simon Baker tries his best, but Martin Henderson, his equivalent in the first American film, was able to make us care about his character. Partly because the screenplay seemed to be coherent, but also because he is able to act the part without resorting to cliché. Simon Baker is swimming uphill against a director who does not seem to care about building a structured plot, and a screenplay that has him speaking so unnaturally it is a wonder he did not cough up a boot during his scenes with David Dorfman. No matter how I try, I cannot think up a simple cause and effect pattern to the events in the film. It is literally a collage of scenes that are meant to be horrifying, but have no framework on which to hang.It is for this reason that I am giving The Ring Two a two out of ten. It is bad. Not bad enough to be good, but not good enough to be entertaining, either. It literally winds up in no man's land. See it if you can get it for free, but if there is something better on, such as a collection of You Can't Do That On Television repeats, watch that instead.
