PLOT SUMMARY

Santa's got problems: it's a few days before Christmas and production lags, Mrs. Claus is about to give birth and wants family time, and Jack Frost (tired of second billing) is on probation under Santa's supervision. Santa tries to support his wife by bringing her parents to the North Pole (to preserve the secret of Santa, they must think it's Canada). Santa also brings his ex, her husband, and their daughter Lucy. Inside the toy factory, Jack makes mischief and hatches a plan to become Santa. With Santa juggling that many snow globes, something is bound to go wrong. But if things get too difficult, Santa can always exercise his option to invoke the Escape Clause. Will he?

So bad I felt sick a day after I watched the movie

posted on 06 Aug 2009

If you enjoy the feeling you get when you eat way to much or when you had a really hard day or when you have a killer headache then watch this movie. Santa Clause 3 seems to be so underbudget that I could have afforded to pay for all the budget including Tim Allen's sallary (which I assume was around 10 dolloars for his impressive acting). The plot was something pulled out of a 1st graders Christmas story he made for a school project(of course this story would still fail even for grade 1). The most amazing part of this movie (other than the lack of story, acting, decent props) was that the movie gave me a major headache until that lasted till the next day. This movie flat out blows. And it isn't one of those movies that is so bad its funny ethier. It just blows.

Good Clean Holiday Fun

posted on 04 Aug 2009

While Santa Claus 3 is far from #1 on my list of holiday faves (that honor goes to the 1951 version of Scrooge), it's still one of those feel-good films that are well worth the time. The crew from the original are back, including a grown-up Eric Lloyd reprising his role as Charlie, as well as Judge Reinhold and Wendy Crewson, along with some new faces: Martin Short as the diabolical Jack Frost, and newcomer Liliana Mumy, daughter of Bill ("Danger Will Robinson"-"Fish Heads") Mumy.In this third entry, Jack Frost attempts to hijack Christmas and is foiled by little Lucy-a warm hug saves the North Pole from a major meltdown! All in all, it's good clean sappy fun (unlike the totally obnoxious "The Night They Saved Christmas") Rating: *** out of *****

This movie is not as bad as the reviews indicate.

I saw this movie on cable and it's not as bad as the ratings and reviews say it is. I think that if you watch The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause with and open mind and realize that it's a sequel, then I think that most people will enjoy it for what it is. I admit that it's not as good as the original but it is still very enjoyable and has a good storyline. The opening scene of the movie sets up a very good foundation for the events that occur during this movie and it is pretty fluid and constant all the way through. I admit that I missed the character of Bernard the Arch Elf (David Krumholz) in this movie and it may have been stronger with him included. I also think that Christopher Walken and Doris Roberts would have made better in-laws than Alan Arkin and Ann Margaret, but I still think that the storyline and the addition of other characters balance it out. Two standout roles that help to make this movie more enjoyable are Martin Short and Liliana Mumy. Martin Short was excellent in his role as Jack Frost and his portrayal of the character was unbelievably good, as was Liliana Mumy who was also great in her role as Lucy Miller.

The writers journey

Should have been used in this travesty. It had a huge beginning extremely short middle and a short end. It was written so badly you couldn't even tell what was going on. also the whole alternative reality thing has been used so much in Sci fi its not funny and this had no right to use it!. Tim allen was terrible in this and martin short was a dork!. again it had a 90 percent of kids in it. and abigail breslin only had 1 line in it lol she is the biggest thing in Hollywood and they give her brother who cant act even if you gave him a billion dollars to. the only person in this film i liked was......hmmm im trying to think......nope cant think. so this Christmas i advise you to watch the snow melt or if you really need to watch a good Christmas comedy movie watch national lampoons Christmas vacation.

Hypocritical and insulting

posted on 31 Jul 2009

I refuse to acknowledge the sequel rule. The rule that states all sequels are inherently inferior to their predecessors. There have been plenty of sequels out there that have far surpassed the original that just prove the theory wrong. But then there are films that completely prove that theory right. "The Santa Clause" was a perfectly nice movie when it came out 12 years ago. "The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause" was just terrible, and almost a disservice to the memory of the original.Santa (Tim Allen) has to deal with life as a newlywed with a baby due right around Christmas time (his obvious busiest time of the year), and his wife, Carol (Elizabeth Mitchell) yearning for familial company that isn't an elf. Santa decides to invite Carol's parents (Alan Arkin and Ann-Margret) up to the North Pole to keep her company. This poses the problem of hiding the fact that he's Santa for the duration of the stay. And did I mention that an ornery Jack Frost (Martin Short) is trying to take over Christmas for financial gain? The cast is fortunately able to work with what they're given (which isn't much). I'm always entertained by the underrated Allen. Mitchell is experiencing a thrust in popularity lately, mostly due to her impressive role on the new season of "Lost", but she's always been somewhat of a hidden gem of a character actor, and is finally getting some recognition. Arkin, in my opinion, was the real joy of this film. He's always funny, and a treat to watch on film. He's got this old school comedic timing that's reminiscent of Sid Caesar, and it's interesting to see how that plays off the younger comedic generation comedic in Allen, and then further down to the younger performers playing the elves. But cast performances aside, I'm not entirely sure what is more insulting to me as a viewer. Is it the poor writing on a pure mechanical level or is it the fact that it hypocritically scolds us in a "holier than thou" manner while being completely unoriginal, and doing so poorly at it? If I look at it on the pure mechanical level, it is technically two full stories. One stretches the course of the entire film, and the other is awkwardly implanted in the middle. In the pure mechanical sense of narrative writing, it should have been broken into two separate films. The first one being the annoying plot line of Jack Frost trying to steal Christmas away from Santa. It sounds like a rejected Rankin/Bass special from the 1970's. The all too sweet and simple dialogue seems to downplay the talent (however immense or minute) of the adult actors on screen, and makes it somewhat painful to endure as an audience member. The second plot line was borrowed directly from "It's A Wonderful Life". Replace "I wish I'd never been born" with "I wish I'd never been Santa Clause" and you've got it. The only problem is that Santa/Scott isn't trying to learn a lesson. There's no lesson to be learned or taught. And this cycles back to this film as a whole being an insult to the viewers. It tells the audience that the spirit of Christmas is what's important, not the monetary or material gain. But if a third and unnecessary "Santa Clause" film isn't a desperate grab at the pocketbooks of parents, I'm not entirely sure what is.There are a plethora of really good holiday films out there for everyone to enjoy. They're better, and they have a better message. In the next two months you'll be inundated with holiday programming on television and in the video stores. Find something other than this. There's even another Christmas movie coming out in two weeks. You'll do better with that. "The Santa Clause 3" is just a mess of a film.

A good family movie

The first Santa Claus: It was a new, original and entertaining movie, full of funny jokes that will make the whole family laugh their sides off. Tim Allen proved he could be Santa ClausThe second Santa Claus: enjoyable, funny and full of joy for the whole family. The jokes weren't as humorous as the first, but still a great movie. Now the third Santa Claus: Well.... it was a bit different. The whole Jack Frost idea was really nice and COOL, get the joke. Santa Claus was a bit different and more distracted than the other two. The jokes were really funny when they appeared, which wasn't to often, but still happened to touch the hearts of grown ups and children.Overall: Most people say this movie is a waste of time. They might be right, but don't judge until you have seen it 6/ 10

Not great, but good for families and people who like warm fuzzies.

We just saw this movie tonight. I was surprised to see it out so far ahead of Christmas, but looked forward to it having seen the first two and enjoyed them. The special effects are as good as before and it was a treat seeing all the actors back. Didn't really miss Bernard until it was over when it suddenly hit me he wasn't in this movie. I was getting kinda irritated with the negative in-laws and thinking I didn't like the whole film until the end which had me laughing and really enjoying myself. Know I'm a sap, but I LIKED the warm fuzzy feeling of family and friends coming together. Martin Short was pretty good as Jack Frost. Tim Allen was perfect as Santa and Mrs. Santa is lovely. If you enjoy seeing movies just for light entertainment, I think you might enjoy this movie.

They Should Have Stopped After Two

I don't understand this new trend of making a good film, and then killing it with pathetic sequel after pathetic sequel. Film-makers need to quit while they're ahead! This film will probably be a hit with children, but I don't think most adults will enjoy it. It had its moments, and yes, little Lucy was a doll, but it just wasn't a good picture overall. The plot was way too predictable for one thing. For another, it eventually boiled down to something so saccharine it gave me a toothache. In short, if you're a parent, have the baby-sitter take your kids to the film and treat yourself to dinner out instead. Either that, or wait until it plays on cable. This film was certainly not worth five dollars in a theatre.

We had so much fun watching it!

I do not understand why there are so many critical comments on this Disney movie. Being European and living in Canada I absolutely loved the "Canadian" North Pole. I do not remember last time I was laughing so much in a movie theater. My kids liked the "kid's" part (and I appreciated, that they still do believe in Santa after seeing this movie!!) and I had a blast with adult aimed comments. It is a movie to enjoy with your family and I do not believe there was ever intention for anything else. Cheer up, Christmas is coming! I could not wait to buy real Canadian tree, you know, from Canada, where we are...LOL. And, yes, i will buy this DVD as well.

End Credit Disaster

posted on 05 Jun 2009

This was a story that sounded good on paper but got lost in translation as I think the actors forgot their basic character traits. What was great about the first film is that there is a real transformation between Scott Calvin and Santa Claus. You see it from the moment he catches the globe from his son. In the third film, he's dressed as Santa, but he's doing Tim Allen humor. He's not as magical here. What makes matters worse is that the director or the producer forgot who their audience was. It's families with kids. So, what's with the outtakes over the end credits? Some were actually quite racy. Don't they know that kids watching this movie actually believe Tim Allen could be Santa Claus? If they now see him breaking character and being a little "blue", then how do explain that to your kids who now question who Santa is. Or worse...if. If you have a 6 or 7 year old kid, then you understand. If you don't, then you never will.Granted, it's not the end of the world. But for us parents who like to hold on to the idea of Santa Claus in our children's eyes as long as we can, this movie sure as hell didn't help!

Does what it sets out to do as a nice addition to the trilogy, doesn't near the greatness of the first

The Christmas cheer is already upon us, so that means here comes the load of Christmas movies. As many of you know, The Santa Clause is one of my all time favorite movies. It's a movie that I grew up with as a child and I can say I love because its just a movie, one of those movies close to your heart. Okay enough of that. No, seriously, its a great Christmas classic. So as many classics in Hollywood, that have sequels that follow. I liked the 2nd Santa Clause, I thought it was good fun and very heartfelt. Now when I heard there was a 3rd one coming, I did as many did, the OH GOD. I mean I love the first and 2nd but really was this on anyones wish list? Im pretty sure the answer was no. BUT being the sucker that I am for Christmas movies, I decided this was a must see. I have to admit it looked pretty bad from the previews, and the poster well how fake can you get? But I have to say it passed my expectations which were average. As each sequel rises the faker it gets. Now I don't mean the whole Santa Clause thing, I love that idea about the movies, like the Polar Express, I love making kids believe or still believe because it brings the cheer into Christmas. I mean that the style of it. Santa gets more tanned as we go on and it looses that feeling the first had that I can't explain but there was just something about the first that no sequel will ever be able to recapture, I don't know what it was. The 3rd North Pole adventure has to deal with Jack Frost trying to take over Christmas, and of course, Santa coming to the rescue. One thing that did have me hooked to see this was the fact that Martin Short was in it. I think he is hilarious in practically every role he is in and he was the only person I thought would be a great Frost. Allen and Short have worked together before. Anyone remember Jungle 2 Jungle, ya that "classic" from back in the day? I actually re-watched it a while go and its well a lazy Disney Movie. Anyways, the only good thing about it is that the two have great chemistry. They are good comedians who work off each other well. Short was devilish fun as Jack Frost, his get up was hilarious and done well. I think he made the character come to life, this eve cold hearted, literally, lonely guy. He made him come of the screen and made him actually pretty memorable. Allen is Santa. Thats it, he was fantastic in the first and he just makes him, he fills the suit. And when they are on screen they work together well. My favorite line from it is "You Hit Me With A Shovel". One of my favorite scenes from the movie is the snow globe scene. Its not real, but it just puts that Christmas warmth in your heart. I thought it was very lovable and memorable and just puts the cheer in the movie, it reminded me the spirit and joy of being a child. That is one of the things I love about these movie, it brings you back to your childhood and makes you believe again, not as original as the first, but its always there. Some of my beef with the movie is that it did seem very rushed, how it was put together. I mean it just went from scene, to scene, to scene with out any lingering sense of the last one you just saw. It has it's memorable scenes like the snow globe or the tree falling one, but there's a lot of forgettable ones. And I don't particularly care for the design of the pole. The movie is very sweet itself, but the set is a little to fake and colorful for my taste, which is why I love the first is that it just has the original quality to it, like all first movies in a franchise do. I mean at the end of the day the movie is a good Christmas film and does what it has to do. The families in the audience loved it, as did the kids. It reminds us of our childhoods and makes the believers and non believing children believe even more. It brings fun and love to the holiday which is what it was set out to do. There were a few lines near the end that you couldn't help but smile at. I mean this a movie where when the credits role you say, what a nice movie. It sends it message, its has its fun and its over with. Is it overrated in spots? Yes. Is it a bit to fake and sugary for my taste? Yes. But does it do what its set out to do, hell ya, and it has fun and puts a smile on your face. Its a fine end to a franchise that shouldn't be in my opinion. But, I for one can't wait for the box set next Christmas, that is a must purchase for me. Bottom Line: A fine end to a classic Christmas franchise, but will never reach the greatness of the first.Review by Jordan Appugliesi, written for http://www.boxofficefanatic.com

STRIKE 3 - YOU ARE OUT!! I thought that for sure this movie would be an instant comedy classic because the prince of comedy, Martin Short, was going to be the evil villain. Boy, was I ever wrong.NOTHING was funny in this movie. I'd hardly classify this movie as a comedy. The farting reindeer wasn't funny the first time and then they had them fart AGAIN about 20 seconds later like it would be funny that time, and it wasn't. None of Martin Short's lines garnered laughs. Just awkward "was that supposed to be funny" reactions. And Mrs. Claus in stirrups and 9 months pregnant? That is just too much, let alone for a kid audience. Kids don't need to see that kind of stuff.Martin Short and Tim Allen did not have ANY comedic chemistry. Every scene and each dialogue just seemed too over-rehearsed and predictable. And the kid actors SUCKED big time. You'd think with such a large budget they could get some decent kid actors. The kid that played Santa's right arm man that knows the secrets and clauses was the worst kid actor I've ever watched in my life. How did THIS kid get to be in a BIG movie like this? He must have a good agent.I give this movie a 1 out of 10 because I was not entertained or amused by this holiday comedy. I predict this movie will be on DVD by the time Christmas rolls around.

Cute Christmas Fun

SPOILERSSanta Claus 3: The Escape Claus is a cute Christmas film for the whole family. Although this is definitely not as good as the first, it was pretty good and is passable. Some things in this movie are unusually dark. The image of Lucy's parents when they are frozen was very dark. I also like the fact that they insulted Tom Cruise. I would give this movie a five, but the insult bumps it up to a six.The Escape Claus is about Mrs. Claus telling a story to some elves and the story is about when they encountered Jack Frost, played by Martin Short. Yes, Martin Short! Anyway, Mrs. Claus is pregnant and wants her family to come to the North Pole. Mrs. Claus says that her parents think that Scott is a toymaker in Canada, so they plan to turn the North Pole to Canada. At the same time the Legendary Characters hold a meeting at Santa's Village, including Jack Frost. Jack Frost is in danger of suspension from the Legendary Characters. Since Scott needs to get Mrs. Claus's parents Jack Frost says he'll be Santa Claus until he returns. Jack Frost destroys everything.Scott gets Mrs. Claus's parents and Lucy and Lucy's parents. When he returns back he sees everything is not working right, and his pants are on fire. He then shows Lucy the Hall of Santa Globes, and if he holds his globe and says that he doesn't want to be Santa anymore, he goes back in time and corrects what he did. Jack Frost hears that and freezes Lucy's parents and locks her in a closet. When Scott tries to put the top ornament on the Christmas Tree, Jack Forst unscrews the tree and it falls down. Mrs. Claus sulks and Frost tells Scott to walk with him. Frost tells Scott to open a present. He puts it in his hand tells Frost that he never wanted to be Santa. It turns out the present was his globe! He goes back in time to the night he became Santa.Frost and Scott struggle to get the Santa outfit. Frost wins. Scott comes back to the present as if he was never Santa. But he can still remember. He sees all of the things that happened since he was never Santa. He is told that Frost has turned Santa's village into a theme park. Lucy's there. He goes to the theme park. He tells Lucy to go get the globe. She gets it. He makes Frost hold it. Then he uses a pen that could record voices and it says I wish I wasn't Santa anymore, which he recorded earlier. They go back in time yet again. This time Scott wins. He is Santa again. They go back to the village and it's back to normal. They got Lucy out of the closet, but her parents are still frozen. Lucy then hugs Frost and he melts to a normal Martin Short, which means he isn't all cold and frozen. Then her parents unfreeze. Then Mrs. Claus gives birth. The story ends.Overall, this is a nice Christmas flick.6/10Recommended Films: The Santa Claus, and The Santa Claus Two.

sort of worth it??

this had everything to be a great Christmas film, hell it even could have been the best. all the actors are great but your waiting for the whole film to take off to another level, but sadly it never does only really younger children will like it like 10 and under, its a real pity cause i waited the whole film for jack Frost to do something really cool and evil but nope or Santa to do funny things or have some banter with Frost or his in-laws or even the head elf but again that never happen... thank god for martin short he really suites been the bad guy and should do a lot more maybe he could do a serial killer in his next role, Tim Allen again pulls off being the big guy.he has a warmth about him being Santa, but the rest of the cast let the film down, but maybe you can only work with whats put in front of you.the best thing in the film is jack's hair.i'm getting my hair like that its cool, ice cool!!!!! 8/10 under 10's 5/10 over 10's

The Santa Showdown

posted on 01 Mar 2009

I saw this film not too long after it was released last year, and I can say without a doubt, it deserves better than a three star rating.Tim Allen stars as Santa once again, this time regretting ever taking the job, hence the title "The Escape Clause." It was also a treat to see Martin Short playing Jack Frost, who envies Santa and wants his job. Judge Reinhold returns as well, playing Neil (Charlie's step-dad).The storyline is very intriguing and interesting too, and we get to revisit the first film through new angles. It is a major feat when trying to build around a story already made, and film already shot over a decade before, but the producers of "The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause" have done it.A great family Christmas film. Although not better than "The Santa Clause (1994)", it fared much better than "The Santa Clause 2: The Mrs. Clause (2002)." A remarkable film.

Gives you the warm fuzzies

My family has enjoyed the other two movies in this series and expected to enjoy this one too, which we did immensely. Our children range from 5 to 12 and every single one of them loved it! My husband (not a "family" film kinda guy) thought it was great too. You find yourself smiling through out the movie. And when leaving the theater after the movie, you have a warm fuzzy feeling. Martin Short played a wonderful Jack Frost. And the father-in-law, played by Alan Arkin, was a a great character. For those who didn't like it...maybe they were expecting something more then a wonderfully funny family movie. Perfect for the whole family, go see it!

"Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause" is candy in every dimension of the word

posted on 13 Feb 2009

I suspect the movie-going public generally loathes taking chances on upcoming movies. They want reliable, reassuring entertainment, preferably with an upbeat, if unrealistic, ending. Last Sunday, I suppose my parents and I had that hankering for that "cinematic comfort food" when we saw Tim Allen play the jovial, corpulent one for the third time. Overall, the movie fed us well, even if the food consisted of eye candy, ear candy, and tear candy. The plot basically consists of Santa Allen juggling his expecting wife, her bemused parents (Ann-Margaret and Alan Arkin) who complain of insufficient family time, and the machinations of the devious original Cold Miser himself, Jack Frost (Martin Short). It's no surprise that Santa successfully keeps all the balls in the air, although it's also no surprise that he also almost loses his world because of Jack."Santa Clause 3" is cute, sweet, innocuous fun, with occasional flashes of jaded Christmas cynicism from Short and, to a lesser extent, from Arkin. For example, Short's conversion of the North Pole to a Vegas-like production had bite, even if it was a bit hackneyed. When Arkin pouts after Santa's (Scott Calvin's) daughter by his ex-wife and Judge Reinhold's psychiatrist character (whew!)defeats Jack with a literally warm hug, the audience guffawed. Another scene, where Scott is tricked into giving up Santahood by Frost and becomes corporate Scott Calvin again reminded me a little of Bill Murray's character in "Scrooged". However, the movie is ultimately geared to the little ones, on whom it seemed to work, because the theater I saw it in was full of very young children, and they kept quiet and still! The movie gets the majority of its laughs from the emoting Short, the skeptical Arkin, and the sight gags like the yawning "Santa Fireplace". Allen wisely defers to them in the humor department, although he cuts loose in the hilarious outtakes at the movie's end. ("Mother Nature, can you thaw him out? Uhh, oops!")If you are willing to leave your logical cynicism at the front door and bathe in the usual Christmas treacle, go see this movie. It will put you in both the shameless sentimental AND shameless commercial Christmas spirit.

At least the kids liked it!

Went to see this movie today with the family. Personally, I was alittle disappointed in some aspects. There just didn't seem to be a lot of comedy or comic relief in this movie as with the other two. The absence of David Krumholtz was unmoving, for he provided a lot of stability to the plot lines in the other movies.I did however, enjoyed Martin Short as Jack Frost. He was great! Everyone else returning was a pleasure. It seemed their screen time was increased over SC2, with the exception of Charlie. He just seemed to be there this time around. Lilian Mumy shined in this movie, one of many I hope. And of course Tim Allen....he is superb as Santa Clause.Overall, the movie was so, so. I thought a lot of the context and situations in the movie were alittle over the heads of children my age. (ages 7 and 5 respectfully) And to me, the original movie was based for all ages. The third installment had to many "grown-up problems" that could loose the interest of a child real quick. But for the most part all the elves, toys and of course Santa made seeing it will the kids worthwhile! Although, it is not up to par with the original, it does do a great job of completing a trilogy that will warm the hearts of families for many holidays to come.

Excellent sequel for the holiday season!

THE SANTA CLAUSE 3: THE ESCAPE CLAUSE, in my opinion, is an excellent sequel for the holiday season! If you ask me, the house that Scott (Tim Allen) and Carol (Elizabeth Newman) lived in was very nice. Also, Jack Frost's (Martin Short) little capers amused me very much. In order for you to find out what he did, you'll have to see the movie for yourself. However, the havoc he wreaked really caused chaos. In addition, I loved the way the footage from the first movie was instilled. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say, "Tim Allen has scored huge once again!" Now, in conclusion, if you are a fan of Tim Allen, and you haven't this excellent sequel for the holiday season, I highly recommend it, that is, if you haven't seen it.
