How the hell did Aquamarine get a worse score than this?

OK, you know what let's get to the chase: ITS AWFUL!!!!!! The Shaggy Dog was obviously targeted for kids, and you know what? I'm not sure if they liked it! This is a pitiful movie and I can't believe some people paid money to see this! (Don't worry, I got free tickets.) This is movie I would never, ever recommend, and PLEASE take this advice and use it! I mean, don't get me wrong, Kristin Davis and Tim Allen are good actors, but this wasn't for them. heck, I don't think Reese Witherspoon could have saved this trailer trash!I know Disney is trying to become a more broad studio, but this movies is in with Gigli and In the Mix, and for some advice for Disney, this isn't a place you want to be. I bet Walt is looking down at all of you and saying "What the hell did you do to my empire? Why I oughta-

I am sorry to report that this movie is dead on arrival, and I have to agree with anybody that says this movie is [...]. The whole cast is wasted in this movie, and most of which I have seen in movies that I liked better. Like pretty much the leads in this movies, I have seen thier movies and liked htem better in, but this one, they might as well. If your a Tim Allen fan, please do yourself a favor, and get either the Santa Clause movies, or the Toy Story movies, and avoid this movie at all costs. Here are 99 minuts of my life, that I won't see again, and I am trying to make sure that you don't waste your time on this dud. Who wants to see an actor pretned to be a dog, in some scenes in the movie, ore pretty much the whole thing. I haven't seen Monster House or Cars, but I hope that these will be 2 better movies, or maybe a season dvd of Home Improvement will be pretty then this. Dave Douglas (Tim Allen) is a lawyer, that dislikes dogs, and even has a case against animal activist Justin Forrester (Joshua Leonard). And he is up for accused of trying to torch the California headquarters of sinister pharmaceutical conglomerate Grant & Strictland. And he doesn't much of a family life, since he is never home, and how many times have we seen something like this in a movie? His wife is Rebecca Douglas (Kristin Davis) and they have 2 children Josh (Spencer Breslin) and Carly (Zena Grey). And he has an appoontment to Josh's PTA meetings, and even through he is reminded at work, he forgets. Carly is not only a is both Forrester's student and a budding animal advocate herself, and her brother is trying out for football like his Dad, even through he secretly hates it, and didn't sign up for the fall musical. And then there is a mad scientist (Robert Downey Jr.), trying to extract the secret of immortality from the shaggy hide of a 300-year-old dog he had kidnapped from a Tibetan monastery. And Carly even kidnaps it from Grant & Strictland, and brings him home, nad even trouble starts when the dog bites Douglas, that gets him starting acting like a dog too, and even looking exactly like him at times. The movie expects us to believe the dog is 300 years old, which would be impossible, since neither dogs or people live that long, all I can say we are in an era of movies being made out of sequels and remakes, and this is one to avoid at all costs.

Awesome Family Fun!!!

This is an awesome remake! In my opinion, it's funnier and better than the original. Tim Allen does an awesome job at being a dog. It kind of reminds me of Freaky Friday. When a 300-year-old dog bites a deputy district attorney named Dave Douglas, Dave is turned into a dog. His family thinks he's busy with work. When he turns into a dog, he finally sees what their lives are like when his kids are at school, or thinking about getting a tattoo. When he turns back human, his wife doesn't believe his story, and tries to prove that Dr. Kozak is testing on animals. If you love comedy, Tim Allen, and dogs, you'll love THE SHAGGY DOG!!!

funny family movie

Being a fan of Tim Allen, and having 3 children (5,7,& 9)who all enjoyed the Santa Clause and Toy story Movies, to us, this move was very funny. 3 days later and my girls are still talking about it. The movie was entertaining and it also nice to see Robert Downey Jr. back in action. Take your kids, the special effects were great. Seeing Tim Allen change into a dog and back was hilarious. The supporting cast also did a nice job of complementing the lead actors. Danny glover was a nice surprise as well. Some of the jokes were more for adults but none too raunchy to keep the kids away. Overall, I gave this film a 7, but I'm am known to be generous!

Wasn't expecting much...and then....

I went to this movie under protest with my 8 year old son! Okay, I had an attitude! The movie trailers looked stupid. The original wasn't all that hot. So I braced myself to suffer through yet another LAME kid's movie, like Shark's Tale, out of love for my child! Bought the popcorn, Coke and candy and settled back to enjoy HIS enjoyment, and BOY was I surprised!!! Not only was this movie shot in the traditional Disney style of "bright and airy", but it was ACTUALLY funny and entertaining! I found myself laughing out loud, which I rarely do at movies, comedy routines or jokes. Just ask my family! I'm too critical whether it makes sense or not, to see the humor. But this movie made me lose myself in it's genuine innocence and light-hearted feel. I was a kid again, just enjoying the ride! My son and I had a blast! And isn't that what you want in a family movie? To bring your family together in a mutually satisfying fantastical experience? The last time I enjoyed myself this much at a family movie was when I saw Pirates of the Caribbean. My criteria for if the movie was successful at it's job, which was entertainment, is how I feel when it's ending. Am I relieved, ambivalent or disappointed? I was disappointed when this was over! I wanted more! Tim Allen was GREAT, by the way! He, as well as the rest of the cast, with the exception of Downey, played their parts with just the right amount of comedic enthusiasm, never over the top! Overall an endearing movie! I think I'll use my granddaughter as an excuse to go see this one again! Take your family, young and old, and enjoy the ride!

Acting Ok

posted on 29 May 2009

I did not think that there was anything special about this movie. The acting was okay but nothing special. I think that it could have been better then the original, but it just lacked, especially for a Disney movie. This is one that I think I would watch if it was on but I don't think I would purchase it unless it was super cheap.

An arbitrary judgment:

The shaggy dog is more or less what you would expect from a movie entitled: the shaggy dog, with Tim Allen in it. This is the kind of movie you see when your flying from Quito to Miami. Thats where i saw it. On the four hour plane ride there isn't much to do except watch the movie or sleep. In this case, i should have chosen to sleep.I must admit, the movie is targeted for children and the younger audience to which it must be more entertaining and comical. You will most likely get what you think you will of this movie, especially if you don't think much of it. Its an original idea, but not a very good one. So to Tim Allen i say: Points for originality, but don't do it again!

DOG GONE Good Family Fun

First I want to say that this is the first review I have ever written online. Before going to the movie, I read a not so favorable review. But, I loved the originals as a kid and wanted to share this with my 6 1/2 year old. After truly enjoying ourselves, I just had to tell others that this is a really funny and entertaining movie. Tim Allen was familiar to my son from Toy Story and The Santa Clause so he was excited to see it. His favorite line is when 'Shaggy' says "To infinity and beyond!" The animals were great and the story is simple but sweet. Dog lovers will enjoy looking for canine traits their best friend share. Go, take your family and have a great fun time!

Shaggy Dog is a movie well suited for a younger audience, but is a groaner for anyone over fifteen. There are a few good jokes in there that would would spark a chuckle from the 'elders', and some of Tim Allen's dog-ish impressions might make you laugh but it will get old.The movie starts off like a mysterious Jackie Chan movie, set in Tibet. We are shown a temple where a sheep dog sits praying with the rest of the monks, but a foul plot is afoot: the military has been sent to kidnap this dog, which has been alive for more than 300 years. The evil Dr. Kozak (Robert Downey Jr.) wants to market a "fountain of youth" from the dogs DNA.Meanwhile, Dave Douglas (Tim Allen), a Washington D.A., is having an average American lifestyle. His kids know that he doesn't get them, and his wife is starting to realize that she is losing her husband to his job. When the 300 year old shaggy dog escapes the test lab and bites Douglas,he transforms into a dog at night, and has many dog-like tendencies throughout the day.Often, jokes are repeated throughout the movie, yet don't receive a "running-joke" label, but become annoying. However, Tim Allen's thoughts while a dog ("I don't know why I never tried this running on four legs thing before!") are quite cute. All in all, it's like "Good Boy" with a slightly different story.

The Shaggy Dog by Tim Allen

This is one of the best version of the Shaggy Dog I've seen. Tim Allen and all the other performers do an outstanding job in bringing their characters to life. There's plenty of action and definately a lot of humor. I expected it to be geared more towards the younger audiences but it's great for adults too. If you're "down and out" and need "a pick me up" this is definately one of the best DVSs to watch.

For Every Child, and Their Children, Too

Tim Allen may be the most underrated and generous comic actor working today, willing to pursue any honest laugh to please his audience. But he's clever about it, and the slapstick in this remake rivals the pioneering skill of silent film comedians. This is Allen's best work since "Galaxy Quest."The ultimate test of this movie is the child you take along (including the one we carry in our heart). My daughter laughed and had a great time. She even explained the DNA cloning technology in such a way that demonstrated just how much craft when into the screenplay -- "make it understandable to a kid under 12" -- even though the pseudo science of the plot often distracted my adult mind.I never saw the original flick with Fred MacMurray. But I did see Lon Chaney play The Wolfman, and a dozen other werewolf movies. This is a G-rated version of the same mythology, and it resonates for me as an adult, but flies over the head of my youngster. "The Shaggy Dog" works on two distinct levels while satisfying both audiences -- I only wish all family movies were this good.

Why Can't My Shaggy DA Disc Not Blow SO Badly ?! ?!,

posted on 21 Feb 2009

Being an film buff I am fairly familiar with films released by our Hollywood neighbours, although not as extensive as standard Hollywood productions. With Hollywood films, whether it was made by a Rob Howard or a more obscure artisan, I can fairly adjudged them on a whole as lethargic in pace, inconspicuously lacks background music/instrumentals, and are generally pressed on celluluid films that are simply comparatively substandard. Firehouse Dog, while touted as an award winner is a glaring testimony of this stunted Hollywood film-making characteristic. Review it yourself. The pace alone seemingly needs tighter editing. It was the same character that can be seen even in Disney's SHAGGY DA - a 2006 "highly acclaimed" remake that in my case, I couldn't even view for the third time, because even its DVD resolution has a quality that can only be likened to the eye-view of a person who's suffering his earliest stage of creeping glaucoma. Firehouse Dog is so "relaxed" as if the filmmaker expects people like me to have an available time that they enjoy in present-day Hollywood in an obscure countryside. At the very least, the straight narrative of this film is a consolation, but with SHAGGY DA, the actions were so hard to follow, you'd be puzzled who was fighting and attacking whom. The most unforgivable quality of this DVD transfer is the poor film stock. The picture approximates that of a "third generation" recording of a VHS copy. This means that you'll be sorely disappointed of having to get a VHS-quality copy COPIED, in turn, from another VHS copy which was copied from the original VHS "master tape". Of course, the DVD transfer is not at fault, its simply that the Hollywood despite their touted techno prowess just couldn't give us a decent film stock, that could at least preserve their comparatively well-made gems. The glaring deficiency of films like this comes even more obvious, when shown on high resolution TVs. I've viewed this film in a 29-inch Sony Wega Flat TV, and in a 50-inch Mitsubishi projection TV, from a Pioneer DVL 919 and 909. If not for the antics of the titular dog, Firehouse Dog comes off as wearisome. I watched this film despite its hefty price tag mainly because I'm a film buff. Its works like this that whets my appreciation for world cinema. Unfortunately, Firehouse Dog's poor resolution takes away gratifying cinematic enjoyment, as well as negating its "collectability" factor. This should have looked more glorious if it could approximate the celluluidity of examples like What Dreams May Come or Dark City, but of course that's asking too much from those editing-challenged Hollywood filmmakers. I want to ask the Aquarius Four Cinema House for a refund because this is not well worth $12. I was compulsed to pay it because of the film poster outside, I thought it was at least as exotically glorious-looking as KUNDUN (2004), but it proves to be just a small, obscure production. Critics may raved about it, just like those Canuks did with BLACK ROBE, but the final word is that they're just run of the mill, albeit thoughtful, films.....

Its A Kids Film For God Sake

posted on 01 Feb 2009

Took my 2 and 6yr olds to the cinema to view this one and new what I was in for before I got there. I am staggered this film gets torn to pieces by numerous comments on this forum. It is after all a Kids film.My 2 loved it and laughed all the way through. Regardless of how lame the story is and surprised I was to see a good actor like Robert Downey Jnr appearing in this kind of film. Tim Allen is perfect for the part of a dog though I do prefer him in old comedies. However it provided 90 mins of moan free time for my 2 who had a great time. Mind you my 2 yr old laughs at the Tweenies so there is no helping her really. My opinion would be if you have nothing else worth watching and you have young children give it a go. Its better than them running riot round your house .

i so disagree with the current rating of 3.9

posted on 20 Jan 2009

i have to disagree with the current rating of 3.9 this film has.i thought it was very entertaining.it was fast paced, funny, and touching.and it also had two very good morals, one to do with the importance of family, and the other one,i wont give away here, but i will say it is sometime of great relevance and importance on a much larger scale.Tim Allen was actually funny in this movie.Robert Downey Jr. also has some funny moments.there is a bit of rude humour, but nothing i would say is overly offensive.Kristen Davis was good, but she didn't get to show her comedic side.,and i felt she was under used.anyway.anyway,i laughed a lot during this movie, which i did not expect at all.i had very low expectations going in ,so i was very pleasantly surprised.call me crazy, but i give The Shaggy Dog an 8/10

Hard to control animal instinct.

This remake unlike the 1959 original is entertaining using a versatile cast and some very cool special effects. Deputy D.A. Dave Douglas(Tim Allen) is knee deep in a case involving an animal lab that is secretly working on a genetic-mutation serum. Dave is an absentee husband and father. His family life is coming undone. If things couldn't get worse, he is accidentally infected by a dog bite and periodically turns into a "shaggy" dog. Some situations will induce belly laughs.Allen could have easily taken a backseat to Robert Downey Jr, who is hilarious as the movie's villain. Also notable work is turned in by Kristen Davis, Danny Glover and Spenser Breslin. Some of the humor is a bit rude, but shouldn't stop the whole family from enjoying THE SHAGGY DOG.

Let Sleeping Dogs Lay

OK, I admit it, I like Disney films. I have been a Disaney fan since I was a kid – and that's been a long while ago. How long? Well, let's just say that I remember sitting in my parents car at the drive-in-theater watching Fred MacMurry, Jean Hagen and Annette Funicello trying to help Tommy Kirk in the original "Walt Disney's – The Shaggy Dog." I can remember laughing back then, and I can remember laughing when I again sat in a theater watching Dean Jones, Suzanne Pleshette and Tim Conway in Disney's "The Shaggy D.A." It was just as amusing, perhaps a bit repetitive in places, but – hey – it was a good film to laugh along with.Well, here I am again, sitting down to ponder Disney's latest version of The Shaggy Dog saga, and unfortunately, I am not laughing.Tim Allen does his best to bring this film up to the Disney standards set by MacMurry and Jones before him. However, even with his comedic genius, Allen is unable able to bring this film anywhere close to the original two Disney classics.Unlike the previous two Disney tales, this film revolves around a dog that is genetically mutated somehow, and is seemingly ageless. The "evil Dr. Kozak" and his henchmen from a sinister pharmaceutical company are out to extract a "fountain of youth" from this poor defenseless canine. What then follows is a cross between an "animal-rights activist promotional film" and a "Disney Imagineer's fantasy-run-amuck" – which is at best, a film that does not hit the mark of a truly funny Disney Studio's comedy.Out of a possible 10-stars, this one only garners 2.Truly, this "sleeping dog" should have been left alone.

Just a Disney Flick Remade - Don't be overly critical

posted on 23 Dec 2008

It's a funny movie. Don't "compare" it to the older one, it just isn't the same, it's made for the youth of today. Not sure what some expected, but those rating this a "1" obviously don't get out to see many movies, or are looking for something that just isn't this movie. It's funny, not Awful as a rating of 1 would suggest. Now, as far as Disney or the like goes, it's an average movie, below that which Tim Allen is capable of, this is more what I might expect to see on Sunday night TV, not on a big screen. Unfortunately as the Disney Corporation becomes more and more "corporate" and moves further from it's founding principles, its products are slowly failing to impress and differentiate themselves from the hordes of the plain and ordinary and unimaginative.Wow, blah blah, just an average new age Disney movie, not awful but certainly not anything to write home about.
