The Three Lives of Thomasina
posted on 29 Jun 2009This classic Disney movie brought me to tears the first time I saw it on the Disney Channel, when I was 7 years old. I wanted a cat soo bad after this movie!!! So, a year laterI got one, (allwhite), I loved her soo much and I named her Thomasina!!! This movie is soo important to me now, because MY cat Thomasina died a couple of years ago at age 17. But she lived a happy and content life as my pride and joy of life. I'll never have a cat like her again, and I'll never love a movie as much as I loved this one!
An All Time Great
posted on 18 May 2009A movie with everything from first class acting to a storyline where fantasy meets reality. In this case the Cat...who is also a voiceover...is really the central part of the story. Patrick McGoohan plays the vet, whose daughter Mary (played by Karen Dotrice)is owned by the Cat. Its definitely a weepie but everyone lives happily ever after as Thomasina returns from an unusual resurrection performed by Susan Hampshire...supposedly a witch!!!
Thomasina is da bomb!
posted on 09 May 2009I'm a cynical person who hates any kind of emotional manipulation in a film, I'm easily bored by most things except hip hop and drum n bass.
I have watched this film many times and always on my own as it is guaranteed to reduce me to tears. The funeral scene is especially moving.
Perfect Sunday afternoon viewing after a hectic saturday night if you know what I mean. ;)
Guaranteed to melt you heart and leave you feeling that the world is a loving place, full of fluffy animals and wise children.
Trivia Answer
posted on 09 May 2009This movie was on NBC's Walt Disney, while the Beatles were on CBS's Ed Sulivan show (or at least that was the line-up in Portland, Oregon). I remember my friend Tom was the only kid in the neighborhood who had his own TV. So we were at his house, when his parents came in to bring us all out to the main TV, where the Beatles were on. We watched it, wasn't much impressed, and went back to Disney in our own room. I mention this from time to time when we have trivia quizzes, and everyone always looks at me like I'm 100 years old. I agree with other reviews, that this is a very fine movie, that is well produced, and the acting is top-notch.
Best of the Best
posted on 27 Jan 2009At last! This classic story of a motherless Scottish child's love for her pet and the battle of her heart-broken veterinarian father is now preserved for us on DVD. The performances of Susan Hampshire and Patrick McGoohan and magical young Karen Dotrice are unequalled in children's film to this day. Treat yourself to a wee trip to Scotland today and watch Thomasina.
Benji for cat lovers
posted on 28 Nov 2008Thomasina is the cat with her own agenda. She is given a good home with the mother-less McDhui family in Scotland. Little Mary takes care of her. One day, while hunting for fish in the town market, she falls in a stack of crates and is hurt badly. When Mary and her friends bring her to her father, the town veterinarian, he does nothing for her. The children throw their own funeral, in which Thomasina is taken by Lori who is thought to be a witch. Lori nurses her back to health and then, they begin to feel compelled to help the McDhui family. This one definitely gnaws at you. Full of real heart and soul. The most emotional parts are aided by lovely songs, especially the opening. A little hard to explain from someone with a lifelong love of animals. It just calls you front and center to the characters. And no matter what they're going through, you remain intrigued. Actress Karen Dotrice who plays Mary is also Jane from Mary Poppins. Adult actor Patrick McGoohan sure was a handsome devil, famous for turning down the part of James Bond and considered to replace Columbo. 7/10
The" Old Yeller" of Cat Movies
posted on 07 Nov 2008I really enjoyed watching "Thomasina". Filmed in the beauty of the Scottish Highlands. I love animal movies and was looking for a special story about a cat. It's a touching, sad, and funny movie about a lonely little girls love for her cat and her hardened widowed father. All the children in the movie are adorable. I love it when Thomasina goes to heaven and they give her a funeral, It's a unique heartwarming family movie. It reminds me of "Old Yeller" but with a much happier ending. I think anyone who loves cats and animals will love this lost treasure!
A story with heart
posted on 11 Sep 2008Thomasina captures the view of a cat with perfection. She (the cat) is lost from her first family by an accident - a diagnosis of a fatal, contagious illness which results in her being "put down" by the father of the family - a hardened veterinarian who has shut himself off from the world. This also cuts him off from his daughter Mary, who loves the cat with a special attachment. Apparently, though, the shot doesn't take - Thomasina survives to live with a loving "witch" who nurses her back to health. The vet in time meets the so called witch who opens his heart, and ultimately reunites father and daughter. This touching tale is perfect for all members of the family, but remember the tissue box.
Very Good...
posted on 04 Jun 2008The Three Lives of ThomasinaAnother classic Disney story of a smart stray cat named Thomasina who dies and comes back to life, living with a so-called "witch" on her farm in the middle of a desolate wooded area--until the little girl Thomasina used to belong to finds out the cat is still alive and tries to get her back.I have a fuzzy old tape of this movie buried somewhere in my stash of recorded videos. I used to watch it quite a lot and it is very entertaining for the kids. Don't watch it without children around or else you might be put off by its quaint silliness.**** / *****
Yea! Great film and Disney released the DVD in Widescreen!
posted on 23 Apr 2008Finally. Here's a great Disney film that the studio has wisely chosen to release on DVD in a widescreen version. The letterboxing is correctly mild (1.66:1), and is SO WELCOME after, sadly, Disney has released so many of its classics from this era in crappy full-screen cropped versions. Thanks, Disney, for this DVD. Please keep releasing films in their correct aspect ratios...
A Cat Story
posted on 12 Aug 2007A film with a lovely story that appeals to both adults and children. There are few cat films of note and Disney's "Thomasina" can take its place as one of the best in content and performance. The principals are excellent with Susan Hampshire as the kindhearted, pretty "witch of the glen" taking top honors with one of her finest performances. The secondary performers are sterling with the village clergyman and the family's housekeeper especially engaging. Juvenile actress Karen Dotrice as Mary McDhui is superb with her co-worker Matthew Garber turning in an excellent performance as her playmate. (Dotrice and Garber would one day appear as the Banks siblings in Disney's masterpiece "Mary Poppins.") A word of warning! Many film viewers today are sensitive to the treatment animals receive during production and sadly "Thomasina" is marred with the evident abuse its performing feline star receives: the poor cat is soaked with water for several rainy scenes and in the dream sequence she appears to have been dropped from a height, twisting and turning to regain her balance. Additionally, the cat was likely anesthetized for the funeral scene (anesthetization during film production is forbidden by today's ASPCA) and there are other scenes in which the viewer may wonder not only about the cat's treatment during production but the treatment of other animals as well. The film was made at a time when ASPCA regulations regarding animal abuse during film production were less stringent than today's regulations. A fine film in content and performance but some viewers will have issues with the treatment of the cat during production.
One of my favorites that still makes me cry.
posted on 22 Jun 2007There is so much intergrity in this story that could be called sentimental. The two kids were also in Mary Poppins. Patrick McGoohan was very gruff, but of course, shows his love for his daughter eventually. You'll love the cat, even if you're not a feline fan.

Very heartwarming movie about a family that's brought together through their cat's mysterious death and reappearance
posted on 19 Aug 2009THE THREE LIVES OF THOMASINA, in my opinion, is a very heartwarming movie about a family that's brought together through their cat's mysterious death and reappearance. I thought that Andrew (Patrick McGoohan) was a little cold-hearted, but Lori (Susan Hampshire) was a very sweet kid. Beethoven was a sweet dog, though. She even brought her family together when two people were having difficulties with each other. Way to go, Thomasina! If you ask me, that's one thing that made the bond between her and her family special. When Thomasina was revived, I felt really moved inside. In conclusion, I highly recommend this movie to all you cat lovers or Disney fans who have not seen it.
