Disapointing
posted on 09 Aug 2009This vehicle, which pairs Jackie Chan with Jennifer Love Hewitt in an action comedy is just ok... for a Chan vehicle it doesnt contain enough action. Granted some scenes are entertaining, even if the setup of a "super-tux" is just plain silly. Hewitt doesnt have to do much in this role, other than look cute, which she accomplishes... Chan is his usual self... there just isnt much story here. GRADE: C-
Chan, Still the MAN!
posted on 07 Aug 2009This is a great movie. It's definately one of, if not his best. Of course I'm comparing it to his other American movies, not his Hong Kong movies (that just wouldn't be fair). After seeing the trailers, I could tell that it was either going to great or suck royally. I mean, come on. Chan getting his powers from a tuxedo? But hey, it worked!
The fights could have been better, though. He used a fair number of wires, which isn't normal for Chan (probably just to show how powerful the suit is). Also many fans will note the continuing recycling of previous HK stunts. For example on the top of the tower (the first big fight) the rope around the leg trick was also used by Chan in 1989's "Miracles". This isn't the first time he's done this. In "Shanghai Noon", the throwing of the axes which are caught by the bad guy was done by Chan in 1987's "Project A II". It still works, however it is a little dissapointing that he has to recycle stunts this way. But since he's done about 36 movies since 1978 (not including all the others with Lo Wei back in the day) I'm extremely impressed that he's still as popular as he is today.
Chan has been changing his style recently (age probably being a major factor). Less fights, more drama and story. We might not see a really superb fight movie like "Police Story" or "Drunken Master II" ever again. We can always hope. After "Highbinders" in Hong Kong and "Shanghai Knights" in America, there's word of "Armor of God 3" ("Operation Condor 3" for you who don't know any better) and the rumored Chan/Jet Li project.
All things considered "The Tuxedo" is a wonderful (and funny) movie. Go see it. And Chan continues to be the MAN!
Another entertaining film from Jackie Chan
posted on 07 Aug 2009Another entertaining film from Jackie Chan. This time he's got Jennifer Love Hewitt as a sidekick and she does a good job. You can't take a Jackie Chan plot too serious as they are mostly just an excuse to show off Jackie's stuff. This one is pretty much over the top...with the help of a highly engineered tuxedo that is totally unbelievable, they have to stop the nation's water sources from being ingeniously contaminated using water striders that have poison on their feet that will make the water undrinkable so everyone will have to buy water from the bad guy. Sounds ridiculous I know, but any excuse to watch Jackie show off his moves with a good dose of comedy. Though not great cinema, I found it highly entertaining which was it's intention. *** (Out of 4)
My God...
posted on 07 Aug 2009...could Jennifer Love Hewitt's character be any more of a castrating shrew? (minor spoiler) Perhaps at the end, when she was wondering about why nobody hit on her, she could have ripped out Jackie Chan's spleen, ate it with a side of pilaf, and invited him to go see "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood." Would have been perfectly in character. I'm normally a big fan of Jackie Chan, but this one was just too gimicky and one-dimensional for my taste. Here's hoping "The Medallion" is better.
Not all bad
posted on 05 Aug 2009'The Tuxedo' is about Jackie Chan and a magic tuxedo that can make you do almost everything. It is not his tuxedo so he also pretends he is someone else. The villain wants to make a lot of money by selling bottled money and poison all the other water in the world, which will cause dehydration. Yes, the story is as it sounds: stupid. Chan and Jennifer Love Hewitt, who plays an agent who knows everything about water, have to save the world.I have to say it is better than another James Bond spoof called 'Johnny English'. But where 'Johnny English' was all spoof 'The Tuxedo' might not even want to be that a little. The Jackie Chan martial art is always nice and fun to watch and Jennifer Love Hewitt is a very fine woman to look at, and she has some funny things as well, her giggling when an insect is on her body comes to mind. For me she saved most of the movie. I enjoyed it, but it was not good.
This Tuxedo Does Fail
posted on 01 Aug 2009Without a doubt there are few showmen in cinema today who can still entertain us as Jackie Chan can.But his film from 2002,The Tuxedo, was a disaster, for him, and his audience who adore him worldwide. The plot was horrible. The film's supposed villians were not even a bit scary. The script was terrible. Then there was the lack of chemistry between the movie's two stars,Jackie Chan and Jennifer Love Hewitt.Lack of chemistry?Actually, there wasn't any between the two and it showed in the film. Hewitt who,is paired with Chan in this adventure, looks great,no doubt, but she has this problem of whining and complaining all throughout the movie. So much so,her character becomes completely unbearable. You wish Jackie would overpower her with one punch and spare himself, and the viewing audience, anymore of Hewitt and her horrid character. The plot of the movie would not allow this therefore we must continue to see the little girl from Kids Incorporated punch out every man she comes up against making the movie even more unbelieveable.Hewitt,it seems,is more dangerous,in this adventure, than martial artist veteran Jackie Chan is. This movie was a setback for the once hot star Jennifer Love Hewitt, her acting is just horrid here. But one hopes this is just one bad film that is allowed every great film star every once in while, that being said The Tuxedo shall be a film that shall be considered a miss,in the many hits Jackie Chan has made in his career.
The Tux Sux
posted on 26 Jul 2009This is a horrible movie. Now we know how Jackie Chan can't act and has a very lousy accent but he usually use his expertise in martial arts to make up for it. This movie does not let him do those fancy moves, instead where are left with very cliche lines and a dumb plot. Do not watch this movie at all cost not even for the kids. The jokes are very corny. Jennifer Love Hewitt being an eye candy doesn't help either. She should just stick to TV series. That's it for me, no more Jackie Chan movies.
A shattering disappointment from Jackie Chan
posted on 12 Jul 2009Jackie Chan has reached a new low, and
it is this film. While some of his more recent
films can be forgiven, this one tends to be
one of his duller and less satisfying moments.
While rush Hour and Rush Hour 2 offered
some charm from the dynamic master of
bodily contortions, this film just didn't reach
that same aura of incredulity. Maybe this is
a warning to Jackie: stop making films
where CGI and wires are needed. If you
can't do it, then don't. While it did have some
potential, the antagonist just didn't seem bad
enough, kind of like Jonathan Price in Tomorrow
Never Dies. Sad, and I thought that whole
Jennifer Love Hewitt dynamic might aid the film.
6/10, not as bad as I thought it was going to be.
posted on 26 Jun 2009Well, this was one movie that I was waiting for and looking forward to. Jackie Chan, the comedy action genius who I am a big fan of, alongside the enchanting Miss Jennifer Love Hewitt, who I am also a very big fan of. The storyline is stupid, but being a Jackie Chan film it can be tolerated. The film itself is quite good as a comedy, some very funny scenes. The action however leaves a lot to be desired. The whole concept of a Jackie Chan film is that it is fast-paced and realistic with cool stunts. The tuxedo concept just takes it all away. The music and script are just plain bad, they don't seem to help the film. Also Miss JLH's role doesn't really suit her, although she has some funny moments. All this just brings the film down. Overall not as bad as people make it out to be, a decent comedy but nothing too great.Jackie Chan fans would be very disappointed.6/10.
Far from Jackie's finest hour
posted on 24 Jun 2009I started watching 'The Tuxedo' bearing in mind that I'd heard from Jackie fans and Jackie haters alike that 'The Tuxedo' was one of the worst movies ever. It looked like a kids movie, and so I was going to treat it accordingly. Then again, 'The Accidental Spy' looked like a kids movie, and 'Eagle Shadow Fist' looked like a Jackie Chan movie. I should have learned already not to assume anything about a Jackie Chan movie that I have not yet seen.Jackie plays Jimmy Tong, a lowly chauffeur for millionaire and apparently world famous spy Clark Devlin. I always thought that if someone was a world famous spy, then they aren't doing their job properly. Then again, I always thought Jackie Chan always played action heroes who didn't need the help of some stupid gimmick to kick arse. When Devlin ends up hospital, Tong dons the super tuxedo of death and gets to work on stopping from a water dealing super villain and said villain's mad scientists.I thought 'The Tuxedo' was meant to be a kids movie, but it seemed a little to adult to be a kids movies. Then again, it comes complete with kiddie violence. Few people would expect a good story from Jackie Chan, but what we do want is a solid action movie. All we have here is a movie obsessed with wires and CGI, and a lacklustre plot. I know Jackie is getting older, but 'New Police Story' had a fair share of wire work, and it managed to be entertaining. 'The Tuxedo' in unimpressive and not very exciting at all. However, for all I've complained, 'The Tuxedo' has a few funny moments. The scene involving James Brown and Jackie Chan as the 'Emperor of Soul' being a highlight of the movie, even though is supposed to be some sort of action comedy...'The Tuxedo' is not as entertaining as it looks. It has its moments, but not the sort of movie die hard Jackie Chan fans should watch if they have anything better to watch - 4/10
bad bad bad bad bad. bad.
posted on 27 May 2009This movie is so bad. it has bad acting (hewitt), bad writing (terrible dialogue), and bad camera work. There is really nothing good to say about this movie.I am a huge jackie chan fan, and this movie really made me angry. I was really excited when I got to see a test screening, but it's just so stupid.Go rent Rumble in the Bronx. It's money better spent. And that other guy totally works for the movie studio. Go back to Sony!
Pointless, but good , somewhat clean , fun !
posted on 09 May 2009If you watch this movie expecting another Rumble in the Bronx, Mr Nice Guy, or Super Cop, you will be disappointed. If you expect a Bond-like movie, you will be disappointed too. And if you expect brilliant dialogue and indepth conversations, sorry to say, you will be disheartened. But if you want some good, family fun, with scenes that will enthrall the whole family, the movie delievers. The Tuxedo, film starring the ever-so entertaining Jackie Chan and beautiful, seductive Jennifer Love Hewitt, is a bit of Rush Hour intermingled with Bondesque technology plus some of Jackie's "good' ole" martial arts action. When I watched this movie, I found the beginning to be confusing because I didn't realize the point of the movie until the movie got going, which took some time. Kids will enjoy the juvenille humor bits, while adults will yawn and smirk at times. I must say, most of the "humor," is target at children and not adults. Oncec I learned that the movie was about water, I have to say, I thought that this would be a pointless movie, which of course it was. But don't let this get to you, because I was thorougly entertained throughout the whole thing. Well, lets get to the good part..... When Love Hewitt first appears on the scene, she is a bit annoying and too fake sounding as she rambles off her "watered-down" facts. :) But I guess her role is the be the sexy sidekick of Jackie who can kick some arse, and act womanly at the same time. Adult men will definitely find her presence in the movie enjoyable, especially when the two are undercover at parties. Since I'm partial to JLH, a devoted fan I am, I basically watched this movie for her. If you are too, the movie will be well worth the $6 dollars spent.I won't divulge too much about the movie, but I'll say that there are many humorous and action-packed scenes that involve the tuxedo, which is some government project designed for Jackie's boss, who is a secret agent. There was something confusing about the movie that I did't get. Near the end, Love takes the tuxedo from Jackie and acts as though he stole it. She later does something unusual with the tuxedo, and that whole premise of taking it from Jackie was distorted. Maybe you can figure it out when you watch it. There are a few sweet moments in the movie as well, especially when Love reveals a side of her that many seemingly arrogrant people have within. As a fan of hers, I know that its a part of herself, so I found that warming. Well, any of you that go watch the movie, dont expect too much, and just relax and laugh when you feel like it. With a name like the Tuxedo, you know it cant be high-class :) 6 out of 10
Not as bad as reviewed
posted on 27 Apr 2009I recently saw an advanced screening of The Tuxedo and I liked it. Today I read some reviews which were less than favorable. Though this isn't Jackie Chan's funniest (Rush Hour) or most action-packed (just about any other) it's a pretty good movie. It was less him fighting and more the "suit" fighting, which means that there was a lot of CG involved and more special effects than most of his movies. Jennifer Love Hewitt did a good job and was funny at times but nothing compared to who he's teamed up with before (Owen Wilson and Chris Tucker). The Tuxedo is about a bottled water tycoon who wants to take over the world by releasing bugs, filled with a poison that dehydrate people, into the water supply (crazy premise isn't it). Jackie Chan becomes a chauffer to a James Bondish type named Devlin. After Devlin gets hurt Jackie Chan puts on his suit and can do amazing things. There are some plot holes like for instance why the bad guys attached a tracking device to the car so a bomb skateboard could follow it instead of just attaching a bomb to the car. Most of it's crude humor (his horny face?) but some is entertaining. You won't leave awed by the fight scenes or ready to call it the funniest movie of the year but you won't be disappointed.
Jennifer I love you.
posted on 25 Apr 2009Forget the Jackie Chan formula. Forget the special effects. All you need to know about this film is that Jennifer Love Hewitt looks absolutely devastating. She's adorable. And she can act, sing, dance and now do martial arts.Hire out the dvd and go to the outtakes and bloopers and just sit back and watch one of the most beautiful women on the planet smile giggle and laugh uncontrollably at Jackie Chan and his antics. It's worth it just for that.I rate the movie about a 6 out of 10 but Jen is about a 9.5.
The worst Jackie Chan movie.
posted on 21 Apr 2009Running time: 99 min
Rating: PG-13 (action violence, sexual content)
Grade: C
Starring: Jackie Chan, Jennifer Love Hewwitt, Jason Isaacs and Debi Mazar
My point: The worst Jackie Chan movie
Jackie Chan playing a cabdriver who was hired as a chauffeur for the Special Agent, investigating some kind of secret plot to poison US water supplies. The Agent was hurt in a car blast and Jackie obtained a possession of his super intelligent tuxedo to finish the investigation.
The idea was good, but overacting is not as funny as could be. The story is "sucked out finger" and sometimes even annoying. The stunts on very mediocre level and any Jackie Chan fan (as I am) will be only disappointed.
"Vlad"
poor jackie chan, Jennifer Love Hewitt ruined this little movie
posted on 21 Apr 20094 out of 10
This movie had a good concept, an idea that could have worked. If it just wouldn't have been for the annoying I-am-a-sexy-woman-but-still-tough-and-funny Jennifer Love Hewitt. She ruined this little flick. The scenes with Jackie alone are all pretty funny. But as soon as Hewitt tries to be funny it all goes down the drain...
What a pity!Better go watch Rush Hour again!
A silly, fun romp, nowhere near as bad as you've probably heard
posted on 20 Mar 2009The Tuxedo got terrible reviews but it really isn't bad at all. Unlike the dreadful The Medallion, which remains by far the worst of Jackie Chan's American films and is simply a dreadful movie, The Tuxedo is actually a fun watch. The basic gimmick, about a suit which can give it's wearer special powers, is a silly but fun one, in fact it's reminiscent of The Mask. Much of Chan's action is indeed CGI-enhanced, but it actually fits with the 'special powers' idea quite well. The brief 'unenhanced' fighting in the film is indeed below par but adequate, and there is much else in the film that entertains. The script has some very funny lines, Jennifer Love Hewitt sparkles and makes a great partner for Chan {why does everyone seem to dislike her?}, and there are a few amusing-if-silly sequences, such as when Chan performs in place of James Brown and, aided by his suit, wows the audience. The actual plot of this film {something about polluting water with a new kind of water created by insects.....or something} is unintelligable. But this is a enjoyable piece of fluff that will entertain as long as you don't think about it too much. It's not Police Story, or even Shanghai Noon, but it's at least as fun as Rush Hour and without a doubt a thousand times better than The Medallion.

Great fun, with a lot of laughs!
posted on 09 Aug 2009This movie is a riot! If I watch a comedy, and that's what this is, and I fall down laughing, then it gets a 5! This movie is very entertaining, with lots of Jackie Chan action. This is a movie where the humor and action are what count, not some sophisticated, complex plot. If you like Jackie Chan style action and fun, you will enjoy this movie, most assuredly! The short time Jason Isaacs spends as the super agent, while a major departure from his best known role as Lucius Malfoy, is really entertaining. And as Amazon.com says in their review, the faux James Brown scene is a show stopper. I recommend this movie to all Jackie Chan fans and all those who enjoy the martial arts humor he has make popular. This movie does deserve a 5!
