Five Criminals . One Line Up . No Coincidence
In a world where nothing is what it seems you've got to look beyond...
The truth is always in the last place you look.
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist
I don't believe in God, but I'm afraid of him.
Five Suspects. Fifty Plot Twists. One Keyser Soze.
After a waterfront explosion, Verbal (Kevin Spacey), an eye-witness and participant tells the story of events leading up to the conflagration. The story begins when five men are rounded up for a line-up, and grilled about a truck hijacking (the usual suspects). Least pleased is Keaton (Gabriel Byrne) a crooked cop - exposed, indicted, but now desperately trying to go straight. The cops won't leave him alone, however, and as they wait for their lawyers to post bail, he is talked into doing one more job with the other four. All goes tolerably well until the influence of the legendary, seemingly omnipotent "Keyser Soze" is felt. Although set in the modern day, it has much of the texture of the forties, plus suspense, intrigue (a fairly high body count), and lots of twists in the plot.

Very good and worth seeing but...
posted on 28 Aug 2009I wouldn't call it a "brilliant masterpiece". It IS a gripping thriller with great direction, convincing plot twists, and very strong performances BUT The ending is predictable. Ten minutes before the movie was over I figured out what was going to happen and felt very let down. But it is still worth recommending and renting for some summer suspense. Just don't expect too much.
A movie to be remembered for a Lifetime!..
posted on 28 Aug 2009The Usual Suspects. The name didn't interest me and so did the cast. But I wanted to give it a try as it was a crime movie. Generally, I never watch a movie more than five times even though if its perfectly made and this movie is an exception. I have watched it completely for 23 times and I still long for more.Firstly, all the actors put up a brilliant performance. I have never heard of Kevin Spacey before in my life and after watching this movie I have become a revered worshiper of his. Ah!, how he acts through the movie. It's pleasing to see him act and when the Final twist is revealed one will definitely applaud for his wonderful, stunning performance. In fact this little movie houses the best Climax EVER in history. Strictly speaking this movie can only be enjoyed after repeated viewing.Pete Postlethwaite is brilliant as Kobayashi, Keyser Soze's aide. Gabriel Byrne, Chazz Paliminteri and Stephen Baldwin put up a memorable show. The revelation of the story is simply super. The way the story unfolds from a normal crime thriller to a great master-piece should simply be seen. In fact, this is one movie where the power of the villain is felt without actually filming or portraying the villain in action. A great movie to be watched and in my opinion its the best movie ever made!!Hail!, The Usual Suspects!! A perfect ten on ten!!
Cheap Cinematic Ploys Ruin What Was Otherwise a Great Movie
posted on 25 Aug 2009I won't give away the end, but needless to say, this is a who-done-it thriller. The movie is filled with several significant ploys designed to intentionally fool the viewer, thereby leaving the viewer with hollow feeling at the end. For those of you who have seen "The Sixth Sense" (a tremendous movie that did not need to rely on such gimicks), you will understand what I am saying.
Okay, But Let's Not Get Carried Away
posted on 25 Aug 2009I am going to guess that this is another film people either really liked a lot or were very disappointed in. With a surprise ending, it's one you have to see more than once, and even then your opinion might not change, even when you know "whodunnit."This is yet another story told almost entirely in flashback. The best part of the movie was the acting. Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey, Chazz Palminteri and Stephen Baldwin make up a good foursome for this story and are interesting to watch play their parts. This is more of what I would call an "intriging" rather than a "satisfying" movie. It's decent but c'mon, let's face: it doesn't live up to its "hype." To call it a "masterpiece," etc., is a bit of an overstatement.
Ugh, why such a good rating?
posted on 16 Aug 2009I went out and rented this because it got such good reviews, but I couldn't get through it. After about 45 minutes, I just gave up and switched it off. I don't care if this movie gets wonderfully fantastic after that point in the movie, but I cannot give a movie like this a chance if I can't get through the first half of it before getting bored out of my head. Waste of money, two thumbs down.
Great, great movie!
posted on 13 Aug 2009I was really not sure what to expect going into this movie. I am pleased to say I went into it completely unbiased. I was expecting something good, but I was pleasantly surprised at HOW good it was. Going through the story would take too long, so I'll just explain the highlights and lowlights. The acting is superb. Watching the characters of Dean Keaton, Verbal Kint, Michael McManus, Todd Hockney, and Fred Fenster is a hoot, and on occasion, a hold-your-breath-or-you'll-miss-it moment. They work well together, and are completely believable as the colorful gang of criminals. It is Baldwin, however, who really steals the show, as the tough, trigger-happy, and possibly slightly psychotic Michael McManus. The character is hilarious, and as he racks up easily a third of the movie's large body count, you can't help but cheer for him. Kevin Spacey, of course, is fascinating to watch as the slimy and rat-like Verbal Kint. Gabriel Byrne is riveting as Keaton, and the others are as well. However, this is a mature movie. There is well over 90 f words, and brutal violence racks up a body count of at least 30 people. Nonetheless, if you are mature, go see this, cause it is one of the best movies EVER. Seriously.
One of the best films of the 90s
posted on 07 Aug 2009Only a few films made an overwhelming impression on me: Vertigo, The Killing, Festen, Reservoir Dogs, Before The Rain, Once Upon a Time In America, Memento and this film, The Usual Suspects. I'm talking about one of those experiences in the theater which you want to have over and over again, but you know that it's impossible and it makes you sad. Off course, there have been other brilliant, eminent masterpieces; films that are for ten other reasons better or more important in film history, but they all somehow didn't connect like the ones mentioned above. Why did The Usual Suspects impress me so much, and why is it one of the best movies of the previous decade? To be honest, I don't have the ultimate anwser. It has probably to do with a number of aspects.First of all, I like mysterious film noirs with a lot of suspence. And this film has a lot of suspence, from the beginning the atmosphere is just right.Secondly, the story is brilliant (although not very realistic). The script is so clever, and the ending... well everybody is talking about the incredible ending. Usually, a "who-done-it" is very disapointing, (it is either predictable or it has an over-the-top surprise-element, which makes you want to throw up), but this ending is the opposite. The story evolves around one question: "Who is Kayser Soze?" (so actually it is a "who-is-it") When the film begins, we know this: he is a legendary, very violent drugdealer who, in the beginning of the film, probably (he is the only suspect) murdered a group of other drugdealers on a boat. Very soon after this violent episode, it is clear that every character (including the investigator, played by Chazz palminteri) is scared s**tless when the name Kayser Soze is even mentioned. The fear of this creature (after a while you start not to think of him as a human being) is one of the main reasons why this film is so thrilling. The actors are very important in this process of communicating fear to the audience. They are overall very good, especially Kevin Spacey (Oscar), Gabriel Byrne and Chazz Palminteri. Benicio Del Toro is from time to time very funny; Baldwin, Pollack and Postlethwaite are ok. It is true that the ending has a tremendous influence on how one perceives the film as a whole. The film is, as a result, more or less lifted to a higher level. But still, without it, the film is brilliant anyway. I watched it over and over again (even for the second time in the theater, which never happens!) and, although I know about the story's development, it is still impressive: a combination of a clever story, good acting, suspence, dark atmosphere, a good score, ok-dialogues, and the memory of me sitting in the theater, overwhelmed, hardly breathing and holding my chair firmly with two hands.
These guys fear no one and nothing ... - SPOILERS
posted on 01 Aug 2009A modern masterpiece full of more twists and turns than most might track in one sitting ... it is worthy of several viewings. Richly portrayed characters - and a plot that is both unique and surprising. Kevin Spacey (narrates as Kint) and Gabriel Byrne (Keaton) give us two outstanding performances. Chazz Palminteri is Kujan, he plays it to the max. This flick is perfectly cast all the way around. It all begins after the 'line up' and it doesn't end until you are left shaking your head going 'no way!' NO WAY! One of the best thrillers/whodoneits ever made and I dare you not to walk away mumbling 'Keyser Soze' and wondering how you never saw it coming. Don't worry ... none of us did.Imagine mixing Alfred Hitchcock with Quentin Tarantino, throw in a dash of M. Night Shyamalan and you have a Mr. Bryan Singer, the man who Directed this treasure. This is what happens when a director, script writer and cast are all in the same groove at the same time in the same place while working on the same project - not to mention the musical score. The Usual Suspects is one of a kind, an instant timeless classic that you will never forget.
Film Falls Short of Classic Status
posted on 29 Jul 2009There is much to recommend "The Usual Suspects" for. The film is surehandedly directed by first-timer Bryan Singer. The cast is uniformly excellent. The script, that won an Oscar, keeps you guessing until the very end. What I'm not certain of is whether this film meets the status as a modern day classic. It is certainly one of the more ambitious films in recent memory. In my mind, though, it may be a little to slick for it's own good and it wraps things up a little too tidy. That said, this film has a rabid partisan following that is understandable and I recommend this film to those who haven't seen it and let them judge it for themselves.

The most intelligent and intrigueing movie ever?
posted on 20 Jul 2009What can i say? After the first time i saw this movie, my heart had a bmp over 4000 or something. It was amazing. It's like 1 hour and 30 minutes of great action builds up to the 10 minute ending, the most intense 10 minutes in the history of moving pictures. It's fantastic. And the second time you see it, you notice things you didn't notice before when you didn't know the ending, and you realize how complex and detailed this movie really is. It's a true masterpiece. And Kevin Spaceys achievement is just great. I've seen this movies about 20 times or so, and it's still great, but nothing can beat the first time you see this. You can tell that this is not just some movie to make money, they've all put down a lot of work with it. You owe it to yourself to see this one.
What's the Fuss?
posted on 17 Jul 2009Part of the 'cult' appeal of this film, I'm fairly sure, lies in its trick ending. This is all very well, but it's not a trick ending in the sense that it provides any clue to preceding events. For all the central characters to have spontaneously exploded would have been as relevant, certainly more entertaining to watch. The Usual Suspects is well acted, though shoddily filmed, clearly low-budget and cringingly self conscious. The premise itself - five criminals rounded up by a character who may or may not be Kaiser Szoze to commit a crime that may or may not have been committed - is the stuff of graduate film school. It's clever, but finally not clever enough. If you're going to take the best part of two hours to play an elaborate hoax, make sure the hoax is worth waiting for. This isn't. And as for the 'the trick is that there is no trick' school of thought; Sorry, that doesn't cut it either. Something either works or it doesn't.
An Amazing Production: You'll never see the full ending coming!
posted on 17 Jul 2009This movie is an American classic in many ways already. I just watched it now from the comfort of my home, and instantly came here to comment. I would call this one of the top 10 American movies made. Ever. Hands down. The movie's plot is the story of 5 ex-criminals, who since having cleaned up some find their selves accused of a crime none of them appear to have committed. They begin to believe that the police simply chose them as scapegoats for the crime, so they would have somebody to accuse. Angered by this and the corruption within the NYPD, they decide to take radical action against the cops. This soon leads them all back into the world of crime, and to the shocking truth: that it wasn't coincidence that made their paths cross, but rather a set up. Their story is told by the one surviving man, Verbal Kint, who is pounded by the police, as they try to find out if he is telling the truth or a pack of lies. There are far too many things to love about this movie. It has got lots of action, an intriguing, winding, mysterious plot, and probably the most shocking ending for any movie I've seen in the last 3 years. The movie also, seemingly like the much more recent Kill Bill, manages to create a world of assassins and crime, a setting that will engross the audience. However, one thing this movie has that other movies don't have is that it makes a point of evil winning. The Usual Suspects appears to be a slap in the face towards the police force in many lights, as it reveals just how they could let a bunch of vicious criminals get away so easily! I would personally recommend this movie to anyone who loves twisted action, yet suspenseful, movies...however, I think anyone who can withstand a good amount of violence in a movie will still enjoy it. And anyone is bound to love this ending, I only knew half of what was going to come, and it still left me shocked!
Brilliant!
posted on 11 Jul 2009A truly superb thriller which any serious cinema lover should include in their must see list.In this world there is more to things and people than meets the eye.The Usual Suspects proves that point. The investigating detective,Chazz Palminteri,is a sort of domineering character who likes to pressurize the criminals into confession! Brilliantly acted and impressively directed by a young director.Kevin Spacey deserves every award he receives and it'd be an audacity to try and praise him.
5 guys and a bunch of dope?
posted on 11 Jul 2009Usually you'd think that one of the usual guys did it, usually you'd think that the problem started with a bunch of dope. Well yes and no! This is a noir movie that resembles the old ones, very interesting bad guys and a lot of plot changes, that will take your attention every single minute. Benicio del Toro, Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey, Chazz Palminteri among others offer great performances. Directed by Bryan Singer a very young and good director , who will make you think from the starting scene where the camera makes a close up of the ropes on the dock, a crucial clue for solving the mystery. A movie worth seeing more than two times.
The smarter movie of the times!
posted on 08 Jul 2009The usual suspects: a great movie of kind: "who are the murder?", and you never will discover!!! Every detail of the history have a purpose... so this movie takes your attention until the end. If you appreciate suspense movies like me, so this is the best! Course I have to comment about Kevin Spacey... he was sensational, perfect, and this movie changed his life. Well... don't wait! Rent this film now!!!

fascinating
posted on 28 Aug 2009Wow...tough to describe such a fantastic movie. Relentlessly clever, and never boring, this movie is truly as good as it gets. The movie has it all...and then some. The ending, well, I won't ruin it, but it's more shocking even than The Sixth Sense. I love this movie, and think it's the most clever movie I've ever seen in my life.
