Definte chick flick. Very cute, light hearted movie. Leaves you smiling

posted on 25 Aug 2009

I whole heartedly disagree with the reviewers. This was a cute movie. When you walk out of the theater it leaves you smiling. Humorous pratfalls that are oh so familiar were used effectively so you laugh, though you already know whats bound to happen. Got a chuckle when the father commented "at least someone was getting some use out of the boat" when Kat and Nick got caught in the morning. The friend "TJ" (Sarah Parish)is a hoot. The chase scene in the end was predictable but still funny. Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney seemed to be having a good time and it showed in the movie. All in all it was a nice movie. Nobody is going to get an Oscar nomination but it entertained me.

Pretty flat romcom

A Messing vehicle after Four Weddings and a Funeral. It could go either way of course. Debra Messing is a super small-screen comic actress and although her film outings have been underwhelming thusfar (Celebrity, The Mothman Prophecies) this seems just the sort of pot pourri picture to bring out her best. Well, it barely materialises: predictably, when the director actually wants something her comic timing is impeccable, but when she's given free reign to be neurotic or dramatic it's just a bit aimless. This unevenness permeates the whole enterprise. Amy Adams has it just right and Jack Davenport doesn't try anything fancy, thank goodness... but Dermot Mulroney is far too serious, Jeremy Sheffield - a hunk the Broccoli's must have had on the same shortlist as Daniel Craig - is too silly and Sarah Parish somehow too small-screen (although there's nothing small about her show-stealing décolletage). The film itself is desperately slight, mixing Friends with Four Weddings. It's too thin and puts too much pressure on the cast to fill out half-baked set pieces (Parish rises to this challenge admirably, and I might add that Ivana Horvat's tiny contribution in this context did not go unnoticed). 3/10

Undependable Chick Flick

posted on 14 Jul 2009

Although completely within the mold of the "click flick", this movie didn't click at all. I saw The Wedding Date with my girlfriend (yes, she brought me to it; repayment for making her watch Blade Trinity ;-) and was completely disappointed. I walked in with NO expectations whatsoever, and was STILL disappointed? How is that possible? The problem with this movie seemed to be two things. The editing was very choppy, and as a result, scenes didn't mesh, characters weren't developed, there weren't clear reasons for some of the "romantic/outrageous" things that occurred, and the movie took on a very (unintentional, mind you) zig zaggy storyline. In the end, you just didn't feel like you cared about the characters and didn't understand the importance of their motives. Coupled with this was the fact that this movie had no originality. Yes it is a standard wedding/desperate single woman "chick flick", but there is so much room for originality regardless, and this movie completely flopped in this regard.I would not recommend this film to anyone willing to spend money, or go for a relaxing night with a date. The only way I got through it was by staying angry by repeatedly reminding myself that I paid to see it, and as for my girlfriend, she found peace of mind by falling asleep! You want a fun, witty, slightly original flick with the same storyline to see with your girlfriend/ friend, go see HITCH with Will Smith.Sorry, but it's the Truth.

A Cute Romantic Comdey

Not a movie that will make you think all that much, although it has its moments when it comes to family troubles, but I can watch is movie again and again and I have! I have the DVD and its one of my "I don't know what to watch, so I'll watch ______" movies. I love it. Its lovely. The roles were exactly prefect for the actors. Malroney is so sexy you'll want to kiss the screen. The pace is good too, its only a wedding weekend (and they fall in love) but you see how it happens little by little with each interaction. The movie was suppose to be longer, a lot of scenes were cut out due to money troubles (not enough of it). And I do know (from the DVD)that it was suppose to be much darker, in terms of the family issues, which would have been nice to see but all-well. Great romantic film!

Cute romantic comedy, but we've seen it before

Debra Messing plays a woman who hires an escort to accompany her to her sister's wedding where she expects to run into her ex-fiancé. The Wedding Date is a romantic comedy, so you can guess where this story goes, in general, if not the specific twists and turns. It's not a bad movie, but there's not much that we haven't seen in other romantic comedies. I should say that I'm a guy, and this is really a "chick flick", so maybe I'm missing something. But there is some chemistry between Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney, the settings are nice, the acting is reasonable and the story moves along at a good pace and is reasonably entertaining. It's a decent romantic comedy, so if you like those, then you should like this.

Lowbrow Hijinks in a Mess(ing) of a Movie

"The Wedding Date" is one of those paint-by-number comedies that revealed its few feeble laughs and obvious outcome in the trailer, leaving the viewer with little to enjoy but plenty to contemplate during its mercifully brief running time. First and foremost among the puzzles it presents is why an attractive airline executive would opt to spend $6,000 for a male escort to accompany her to her sister's wedding, when she easily could have invited any one of a number of gay flight attendants to help her out, thereby saving the big bucks.Another nagging question might be why stars Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney agreed to appear in this muddled piece of fluff. Based on the film's brevity and its plot's many unresolved issues, one suspects that Dana Fox's original script may have been considerably longer and more amusing and the ultimate victim of dreadful editing - although could what was left on the cutting room floor really be worse than everything that remained? In this reversal of the far superior "Pretty Woman," a female in need of attractive arm candy hires a professional to fulfill her needs. Her goal is to impress family and friends gathered at her sister's wedding, and needle the best man, her own ex-fiancé. "Pretty Woman," at least, offered the interesting premise of a common streetwalker forced to travel the "My Fair Lady" route in order to pass as a sophisticated lady. With Mulroney in the title role, "The Wedding Date" requires no such transformation and thus loses a lot of comedic possibilities. The shenanigans in which the players engage here are silly, sophomoric, and very old hat. If a writer and director are going to cut-and-paste from a variety of other movies, the very least they could do is select the better parts.Messing, who has become increasingly shrill and less likable in her role on television's "Will & Grace," simply magnifies all of that character's unpleasant traits on the big screen. She is one of those actresses who is doomed to play forever a variation of the same person - skilled at what she does, but lacking enough talent to stretch and grow into something more demanding. Mulroney is perfectly cast as the high-priced hustler with chiseled looks and static personality. Their chemistry is considerably less than one would find in a high school science lab. There are more sparks in a minor Bunsen burner explosion than one finds between these two.Holland Taylor, who has honed her meddling mother skills on "Two and a Half Men," is in fine form here, not quite worth the price of admission but a bigger asset than either of the leading players. Taylor has been offering strong support for years; it would be interesting to see her as the centerpiece of a film some day.Director Clare Kilner, with few previous credits, has done nothing to boost her resume here. More than anything else, she has constructed the type of "date movie" that gives date movies a bad name. No doubt little time will pass before "The Wedding Guest" finds its fitting fate - on an airline screen or in a library bin as a free rental.

Like a bad date, you might wanna skip this one...

"The Wedding Date" follows the neurotic Kat Ellis as she prepares for her little half-sister's wedding in London. However, since her former boyfriend dumped her, she hires a male escort, named Nick, to pose as her new boyfriend (because, no matter how successful you might be, being single means you're a total loser and failure at life). When she hires this escort, though, she soon founds out he's also a male prostitute. Things get even more complicated when she gets to London and reunites with her former flame...I'm not the type of girl who's very partial to chick flicks, but if I'm at a get together, or such, with a bunch of other girls, I don't mind them. If you have a bunch other other people watching it with you, it usually makes the movie more fun, enjoyable, and bearable. However, I am sad to say, even when watching it with a bunch of friends of mine, "The Wedding Date," was still excruciating. This is, of course, a movie that is perfectly happy with following a formula. I'm sure most people have seen or heard of at least one other romantic comedy following a plot that includes prostitute and client falling in love, former flames, or getting a date for a wedding/some other social outing to not look like a loser (or all three). But this movie is not one of the good ones. Now normally with silly little romantic comedies such as this one, I try to ignore the fact that it is indeed formulaic and has been done before. However, with better romantic comedy movies, they at least try to have something good about them; fresh jokes, good witty dialog, enjoyable characters, etc. But, this movie does not. The plot sucks and over used and the jokes are boring, dull, and recycled from better (and worse) material. Most of the characters are shallow, stereotypical, and annoying. The main character Kat, is neurotic and grates on the nerves. Also, her former boyfriend, I don't see how she ever fell in love with that spineless, dick faced jerk. Her sister is ditsy and bitchy. However, I do think that Dermot Mulroney's performance as Nick was passable, especially compared to the other performances. I think it's unfortunate that the actors got stuck in this movie. Debra Messing, I believe (and like some other reviews have said), is a rather talented, bright and energetic actress. However, her talents can't be show cased in a movie like this. Over all, I just say skip this movie. It's not really worth the time.

If you're looking for a movie to bring you out of the blues, this is a good movie to do just that.Kat (Messing)'s character is easy to identify with and there are some of those, "I can't believe she just did that," moments that make you want to turn the movie off but also want to find out what happens all in the same breath. Being able to identify with her is what made this movie worth seeing. However, Nick (Mulroney)'s character fell short. He started out as this mysterious guy who sits back and watches everything quietly, making you wonder, but that's the way he stays throughout the whole movie! I don't blame acting--Mulroney did a good job. It was a lack of character development (in the writing or directing) as the movie progressed.Because Kat was easy to identify with but Nick wasn't, this isn't one of those chick-flicks women can drag their man to and hope he'll secretly enjoy it.The other problem I had with the movie was the dialogue, especially in the beginning. At times it was strong, but other times there seemed to be no point to what was being said (Ok, so we've discussed the fact that he's a highly-paid hooker how many times now? Why are we bringing it up again?).Despite that, there were amusing scenes and defining moments to make this movie worth seeing. If you're looking for a movie to bring you out of the blues, Wedding Date is good movie to do just that.

Very well done

Obviously, many critics and people did not like this movie. But, like with all movies, there is an exception in the bunch, and that was me.I am sensitive to watching movies, and this movie touched me in that sort of way.I thought the acting was the best part of the movie. I do not watch Will and Grace at all, so I was pleasantly surprised with the acting of Debra Messing. It was the first time I viewed the main male actor in a movie, and he also played the part fine.Very good plot, and a very good setting. Quite a unique movie, and it was a job well done.8/10 for me.

Bland and forgettable bullplop.

In The Wedding Date, Debra Messing plays... a woman. And this woman wants to make her ex-boy friend jealous by bringing the perfect guy to the her sister's wedding in which her ex will be the best man. The catch is that the perfect man is a male escort. If this all sounds vague and lacking in description, it's because that's exactly what the movie is. It has an original premise that it does absolutely nothing with. Everything in this movie is a pale facade of substance. The first facade are the characters. There are no characters in The Wedding Date. Instead, there are cardboard cut-outs of the characters of nearly every other romantic comedy. These cardboard cut-outs move using an intricate system of levers and ropes. The result is that you get an hour and thirty minutes of mind-numbingly boring performances. Debra Messing is completely in her element; meaning that she's performing a walk-on as Grace. Nothing original in her performance whatsoever. The "perfect man" is a horrifically crappy actor, and as he spouts out romantic philosophy, you fall asleep. The only interesting character in this movie is the cousin, who is, unsurprisingly, the only funny character. The second facade is comedy. This movie has approximately 2 scenes where you might giggle. Maybe even guffaw. But that's about it.The third facade is plot. Basically, in The Wedding Date, stuff just happens, and then it ends just as abruptly. The only semblance of character development is for Messing's character, and even that's half-assed. Then, right in the middle, they throw in a totally unrelated and unprompted plot twist. Why the ex was made to fall in love with the sister I have no idea. However, I do know one thing. It did nothing to save this dying storyline. However, to the credit of the writers, everything was resolved quickly and illogically so you didn't have to suffer through a slow resolution.A waste of time. I could stand if the movie was just cliché like half of the other movies in Hollywood. But this movie was just badly made. Did the director and writers just fall asleep one-fourth of the way through making this movie?

great movie

I've seen this movie for 20 times, and I liked it so much! I was missing for that kind of movies very much. Sometimes you need just a nice love story, without any running, shooting etc, like in action movies. Well, of course, in good romantic movie, should be nice actors too. Dermot Mulroney was so perfect for it,that I couldn't even imagine better actor. he looked so perfect... And his character was so intelligent, gentle, mysterious... He was like perfect man. Debra Messing was really nice too. She made me laugh 100 times during the movie. She was so funny. Because of her(and her sister, i think) this is a comedy, and because of D.Mulroney's character it was so romantic. The story was really good too, now I'm looking for that book, because I think, that it'll be awesome. I recommend this movie to everyone, because, you know it fills your heart with warmness.

Simply Horrible

posted on 27 May 2009

I've read a ton of books that use this same set up and all have executed on it 100% better than this movie. It was terrible. A bunch of good actors, nice wardrobe and beautiful sets...and it totally disappointed. I found myself yelling and throwing things at the TV. I kept hoping it would get better. It just got worse. There was no character development, everything was rushed. This was the perfect example of bad storytelling. It did everything every writing book tells you to not do. Or rather, misses everything you are supposed to do. It was a big sham on the viewer. Very disappointing. A waste of film. I know there are much better scripts out there waiting to be made. How did this one get chosen?? And why? Was it some exec's kid?

Not a typical chick flick

I think The Wedding Date was a really good movie! The plot was not a foregone conclusion, there was witty banter, wonderful music, great acting, interesting characters. I loved Debra Messing's character. And DM is sooooo HOT! The highlights are: naked DM, the soundtrack, likable characters, captivating movie.Durmot Mulroney is a pretty diversified actor. He can play a bad/good guy, do a comedy/drama, be 1st banana or 2nd banana. It's nice to see a triple threat actor. I heard he's really artistic (musician, artist, poet) and a great dad. I looked online to see if he was still married to Catherine Keneer and he IS! I was surprised, I thought I heard they were getting divorced. He's a fine male specimen. He and Debra Messing have great chemistry in the movie as well. I like CKs movies but I have no idea who she really is; she seems guarded and false.See it with zero (or more) expectations and you will be pleasantly surprised :)

This isn't Debra's first movie.

This was a good movie. I recommend at least seeing it once. I liked it. It's not as good as DEBRA's first movie "Mothman Prophecies" but it's still a good movie. The connection between the main characters is fantastic. It's chemistry. I wouldn't be surprised if they do another film together. Check out Mothman Prophecies (Debra doesn't have a big role but it does show her acting). I love her in Will and Grace. I can't wait until this movie comes out on DVD. I will buy it. I love the main actor. I love his films. I have seen just about everyone of his films. I think that he is an actor that no one really knows unless you own a film of his.

One of the Worst Movies I have Ever Seen

posted on 05 May 2009

I must say that I did not actually watch this entire film. I could only watch about the first 30 minutes before I could not stand it anymore. Now the kicker is that I was on a cross country flight, often confined to my seat because of turbulence and I still could NOT watch this film. I like Debra Messing and often enjoy seeing Will and Grace. But I felt like her acting in this film left a lot to be desired (at least at the beginning - I guess that it could have gotten better toward the end). One of the other things that really bugged me was that I could not tell whether I was supposed to be laughing or not. During the few scenes I saw, I could not tell whether this was a comedy or a drama. Overall, very disappointing. I couldn't even watch it for free!

Bad costume designer/wardrobe supervisor

posted on 03 May 2009

Wow, did this movie have some bad costume decisions or what? Most of the outfits were so unfitting for the actors who wore them. Debra Messing's outfits were so unflattering. The color choice and style...especially the bridesmaid dress. In the movie, when all the ladies get together for a girls night out, the color mix of their clothing was poor. It looked so bad on screen.Overall, this movie was not that great. So dull and no structure. How the heck do two strangers get so close in such little time? Debra Messing was still stuck in her "sitcom mode of acting" for this movie. She does too much overacting/exaggeration, which is fine...if this were a sitcom. Oh, and bad editing also.

Delighful

In this romantic comedy, Debra Messing plays Kat, a single New Yorker. She is invited to her younger sisters wedding in London. Kat has a major dilemma when she when she discovers that the best man will be none other than her ex-fiancé, who, two years before, inexplicably dumped her. In a desperate attempt to face her parents and ex, Kat resorts to the Yellow Pages to hire a professional hooker. This is the gorgeous Nick (Dermot Mulroney), a charming and handsome professional male escort who poses as her new boyfriend and escort her to the wedding. This is a truly delightful and relaxing movie. I loved the beautiful scenery and tasteful classy fashion. I also enjoyed the mix of American and British humour and language. It is refreshing to watch a clean movie with no foul language. My male other half enjoyed it too. Debbie Messing is so natural. Nick is gorgeous and the dream man (dream on ladies). The story is predictable but this is a light hearted movie. Sit back and enjoy. Giggle along with the others.

What else do you want for your money? A terrific two hours...

posted on 27 Apr 2009

Debra Messing and Dermott Mulroney and the entire cast present a fun two hours. Every movie is not an academy award winner and so boo to the critics who get paid. We want to pay our money and have two hours of fun and that is what you get and more. Debra is simply delicious in this role, which again brings out the "Lucy" in her. She is ready and fit for these kinds of roles. Dermott is again very good in this kind of role. The movie is funny and just a no brainer, two hours of laughter and fun. No killings, no special effects, just plain fun. So go and see it for yourself. The critics who get paid, rarely like anything but we enjoy it, simply if it we gets our monies worth and we sure did for this one.

It Stinks on Ice

Chick flick in the worst sense--it's brainless. Debra Messings, who is/was so good on TV's Will and Grace, brings nothing to the role of brainless downer Kat in this film. She breaks up with her boyfriend and hires an escort (a dour Dermot Mulroney) to be her "date" at her sister's wedding in England. Nothing works in this stupid movie. The whole US/UK family thing (mom is American; stepdad is British) is stupid and adds nothing to the film except the veneer of "romance." This film is aimed at girls who think a wedding is "romantic," and that a big wedding in England is even MORE "romantic." No character is this film is likable. Messing and Mulroney have no chemisrty, and the reversal of the Pretty Woman theme is way too flimsy to carry this clunker very far. Holland Taylor is mom, Peter Egan is dad. Jack Davenport is the hapless groom. Amy Adams (the bride) and Jeremy Sheffield (the ex) are totally annoying. Only Sarah Parish as JT brings any life to this film. The ending is totally stupid. These morons certainly deserve each other!

Wonderful Romantic Comedy

I thought this movie was adorable. I was so surprised by Debra's performance. She and Dermont were a perfect match. She was right about her commentary. Dermont did have some of the best lines in the movie. I hope they make a sequel it's such a cute story and it would be wonderful how all turns out in the next story. I hope that when they do decide to do the sequel that Debra Messing doesn't have to deal with flower arrangements. If you don't know what I'm talking about then you just have to watch the movie then the commentary by Debra Messing to find that out why. You can see a lot of Debra's character from Will & Grace. She's just so funny and stunning to watch. I'ts a great departure for her from Will & Grace.
