The most fun you can have on video.
No animals were harmed in the making of this movie. Everybody else was on their own.
Love is in the hair.
Ted was a geek in high school, who was going to go to the prom with one of the most popular girls in school, Mary. The prom date never happened, because Ted had a very unusual accident. Thirteen years later he realizes he is still in love with Mary, so he hires a private investigator to track her down. That investigator discovers he too may be in love with Mary, so he gives Ted some false information to keep him away from her. But soon Ted finds himself back into Mary's life, as we watch one funny scene after another.

A very funny movie, with a good heart.
posted on 13 Aug 2009This is one of my favourite films.Although it is primarily a comedy, the story behind the film is actually very sad. It is the tale of a young student, who falls in love with a pretty girl, but who's chance of wooing her is dashed by a cruel (but very funny) prom night disaster. For the next 13 years, he leads a lonely and empty existence, his life (to all intents and purposes) ruined by the tragic loss of his one true love. And then one day, a chance remark by a friend makes him decide to do something about this...What happens next is a study of the demons that haunt those obsessed by something that seems unobtainable, and the pressures that face those who are the objects of such obsession. The film is also very funny. Some of the comic situations are undeniably basic (some would say juvenile), but they are done so well that I found myself howling with laughter, when more usually I would have turned my nose up (usually I'm not overly fond of adolescent humour). The message that I took away from the film was about perspective. As individuals, we can often lose our perspectives, and this can lead to unbearable emotional suffering. But, if you can act with honour and with dignity, you will eventually be rewarded, one way or another. Some people may be offended by this film , and some may not like it. But I think that the majority of ordinary people will thoroughly enjoy it.
What's wrong with the hair gel scene?!
posted on 04 Aug 2009I decided to watch this movie, after I realized that every single one of my friends had seen it besides me. As I picked up the movie, they set me off with a handful of comments about the movie, and then I sat down to watch "There's Something About Mary".
The first thing I'll mention about this movie is the plot itself. My friends warned me that it was "eye-rolling annoying how PER CHANCE every guy in the movie was in love with Mary". (I noted that, in fact, this was the point of the film). And since in annoying American movies (no offense), the girl who everyone is in love with in is annoyingly (that word again! ack! sorry, I will try to use it less) sweet, hot (but doesn't know it, OF COURSE!), smart, a real goody-goody... blah, blah, blah. The kinda girl you wanna punch, if I were to be frank. But likely Mary wasn't like that..too much. I mean, there was that "I don't need men I have my viberator" comment, and she DOES go see sports. So, hmmm.... I'll give her a second chance. How generous of me. The plot could be a snore. A girl who everyone is obbsesive about? A guy who sends a detective to find her? The dectective falls in love with the girl> Girl and boy live happily ever after? Snore, right? WRONG!!! This movie is funny! Besides the hair-gel thing (I myself loved it... but this is a heated arguement), the other great scenes were the first date, (people, thank your gods or whoever you want to thank, that this did NOT happen to you. surely, you'd die.), the "are-you-gay" scene, the scene with the hitch-hiker.... of course, you don't have to have a very sopistcated sense of humor to laugh at the jokes in this movie. Defintly pick this movie up, but first see Road Trip, American Pie, and, most important(!) Dude, Where's My Car? Oh yeah, and Scary Movie is also a must. But that, my friends, is a diffrent story...
I Don't Get It
posted on 01 Aug 2009I don't get it - after hearing so much hype about this movie I finally went and saw it. And IMHO it's one of the worst pictures of the year. A hodge-podge of cheap meaningless jokes that lead nowhere at all, an ending that puts both Agatha Christie and Monty Python to shame, and rather bad acting to boot. But worst of all is the screenplay. This is not comedy - these are cheap shots, and don't deserve to be called a "movie".IMHO.
Average & Overrated
posted on 01 Aug 2009Ted (Ben Stiller) was a nerd who almost went to the prom with a high school beauty, Mary (Cameron Diaz). When he *ahem* is not able to attend, the two of them don't keep in touch. Years later, he hires a private investigator (Matt Dillon) to locate her so they can catch up on each others' lives and remnisce (sp?) about the past, and, as Ted hopes, maybe even pick up where they left off. But as the PI begins to fall in love with Mary, he does everything he can to keep Ted away from her.The plot sounds like it could be entertaining, but this movie just doesn't deliver. It isn't really as gross as many people say; there are some jump scenes, but nothing too serious. Dillon and Stiller do seem to perform the roles well, but they aren't grand, and even good performances can't save a bad movie. The directorial work is marginal, but bearable. It's really the script that did this one in. As interesting as the plot may sound, it only has the potential to go so far, and even here, it did not meet that limited potential. You'd be better off renting "Dumb & Dumber" if you're in the mood for a good comedy, because this is mostly a grouping of cliches and some sexual references which are neither funny nor actually crude/offensive, just bland.
Yuck, what an awful movie!
posted on 29 Jul 2009I can't believe that people thought this stinking heap of trash was funny.
Shifting the attempts at humor among cruelty, disgust and stupidity, 'There's Something About Mary' leaves little reason to stay until the end.
Sure, Cameron Diaz is very pretty, but that is never going to be enough to save a movie. Ben Stiller tries hard to work within the plot, and is obviously very talented, but the movie is a loser. Not once were any of the scenes believable. The shots were badly timed and poorly framed. The Farreley brothers should be kept away from making films at all costs. I check IMDB to see what they are working on just so I know what to avoid.2/10; the bonus is from the one time I smiled. It's not like I'm immune to humor or alone in my opinion. My wife hated it, too. The next day we saw 'Rush Hour' and laughed ourselves silly. This movie just stunk.
The most funny film of our time!!!
posted on 26 Jul 2009I don't need to go on about how wonderful this movie is because all of the other people who had reviewed this movie say that it is the most funny film to hit the silver screen. I have a copy of this film that I had gotten for an Easter present (I had seen it in the movie theatre and had rented it) and am most pleased to watch it over and over again. I am on my way to go and watch it now. If you are planning on renting this movie and have not seen it I am "Begging" you to because you will be in for one hell of a good time.
Forget the hype...... this movie is horrible.
posted on 20 Jul 2009This is one of the most atrocious attempts at filmmaking that I have ever witnessed in my life. This movie was even worse than, "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion". That is saying alot since I would rather have my face rammed into a brick wall 100 times than see that again. Anyway, this movie is just dumb. The jokes and gags are not funny, the characters are annoying and basically you can get more entertainment from staring at a blank wall for 6 hours. I don't know why everyone keeps dumping out their love for this movie on me. Just stop it. Now.
Cheesey Hijinx
posted on 20 Jul 2009"There's Something About Mary" is like many cheesey romantic comedies, except that is has more heart and more big laughs. One of the best aspects about Mary is that she is attracted to the integrity of men and not just their appearance. Ted (Ben Stiller) is an awkward teenager with braces who wins the heart of Mary (Carmen Diaz) when he shows the character and courage to defend her handicapped brother. He then garners a chance to take her to the prom, but a terrible accident cuts off their relationship, and leaves Ted yearning for her even after she moves to Miami. Through a friend, he hires a private investigator, Pat, (Matt Dillon) to find her. A slimeball from the start, he chases Mary himself and attempts to leave Ted in the dust.
"There's Something About Mary" is meant to be in bad taste, but for humor, sometimes it hits and sometimes it misses. Fortunately, it bats at about .750 and manages some grand slams. Mary is truly captivating enough to enable decency, but the treatment of the handicapped is a mixed bag. Special people are a touchtone to the characters, but there are a few cheap jokes involving the handicapped as well. Ben Stiller manages again to play Mr. Ordinary who is thrown into the worst of circumances, like in "Meet the Parents," and remain a nimble and nuerotic presence. It is a fun movie for all its hijinx and even (sometimes especially) the cheese...(including, notably a guest appearance by Chief Cheese, Brett Farve...)
This passes as a comedy?
posted on 17 Jul 2009I thought "There's Something about Mary" should've been called "There's Nothing about Mary". I was mildly amused at times, but you know there's a problem when you enjoy the ending credits much more than the movie. I can't understand the raves and the success this one found, but to each his own.
There's definitely something about this film that draws one to watch it
posted on 11 Jul 2009There's definitely something about this film. When I saw this film, I was thinking of The Wedding Singer because both movies were set relatively the same time and both lead actresses happened to be blonde.I thought Ben Stiller played an excellent character in Ted as he tried locate the girl he had a crush on in high school. Cameron Diaz was superb in her role as Mary and the actor who played her brother was an excellent addition to the movie because he played his part as a disabled man really well. I'm not a real huge Matt Dillon fan and his role in this movie didn't do much to change my mind. He was very despicable as the sleazy private investigator who has the task of tracking the high school crush down; however, what he doesn't tell Ted when he does find her makes this film more interesting. Who would think that this film has twists that would blow the audience away; it does and not just one, it has two. These twists are really something of a shock, especially to me who was not expecting it to occur the way it did.Overall, this film was enjoyable I wouldn't mind seeing it a second time.
Over hyped but very enjoyable.
posted on 08 Jul 2009This film was very enjoyable, funny and at times painful to watch for example the bathroom scene with the zipper.
I really enjoyed it would see it again and definately buy it when the price goes down. I liked the way it started when they were teenagers. The only bit I didn't like was Mary's brother being used for cheap laughs, apart from that it is the ingredient to a good film!
There's Something About Mary
posted on 26 Jun 2009How anyone could NOT love this movie is beyond me. It's priceless. My wife and I were literally screaming with laughter the first time we saw it. Matt Dillon is the absolute show-stealer in this movie. His antics as the ultra-sleazy P.I. will have you in traction for a week! I HIGHLY recommend this movie. Dillon's antics ALONE make it worth the price. Oh, don't get me wrong, the rest of the cast was hilarious as well! This movie ranks in the top 5 of my personal all-time favorites, as comedies go.
Very Very Funny, Frequently Vulgar But Enjoyable Nonetheless!
posted on 23 Jun 2009This is my favourite Farrelly Brothers film as it still manages to entertain without dumbing down too much to the audience unlike "Dumb and Dumber" which I hate with a passion. This comedy also has a nice moral in it about the difference between love and obsession/lust and the merits of perseverence in relationships; the outrageousness of the antics of Mary's suitors is what makes the film work as well as the daringness at the time to use so many taboo topics just slays me everytime I watch this. I also liked the tribute to Nat King Cole in that other criminally underrated comedy spoof of the Western genre "Cat Ballou" although Nat's counterpart does a whole lot more singing than Richman's who just plays the drum here. Needless to say, Richman isn't worthy to carry Nat King Cole's sandals when it comes to vocal and star quality.
This dvd is strangely bare special features-wise for a Special Edition although the picture quality is very good and so is the sound quality coming in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound mode. Certainly controversial and not everyone's cup of tea but for those who are able to not take this film too seriously as it is a comedy after all may find that this film falls under that rare quality of a comedy that ages pretty well.
Gross, crude...funny Farrelly Bro's comedy
posted on 14 Jun 2009There's Something About Mary (1998) Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller, Matt Dillon, Lee Evans, Chris Elliot, Lin Shaye, D: Bobby and Peter Farrelly. Brace-face softy/nerd Stiller finally gets the confidence of asking the girl of his dreams-a friendly knockout named Mary (Diaz)-to go to the prom, but an accident that leaves him incapacitated-physically and mentally-keeps him from seeing her again. Thirteen years pass, and he hires a sleazy undercover agent (Dillon) to track her down, who falls for her as well. Overly hyped moron-comedy, a Farelly Brothers collaboration that crosses DUMB AND DUMBER turf, is outrageous for two hours (having characters not trying to be funny but encountering embarrassments), and definitely hits the "gross guardrails". Diaz is more appealing than most as she smiles as much as possible, and Stiller and Dillon are very funny. Don't forget the unforgettable "hair-gel" gag ("Is that hair-gel?") and the zipper scene ("Is it the frank or the beans?"). Running Time: 119 minutes and rated R for nudity, crude sexual humor and language.
"That Was Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun!"
posted on 08 Jun 2009The Farrelly brothers produced and directed this outstanding comedy film, and are fast assuming cult status as generators of high-quality 'nerd humour' pieces. Ted is a dorky high school student who falls in love with the beautiful and vivacious Mary, a girl who has recently moved to this Rhode Island neighbourhood. Ted is smitten by Mary (played with immense charm by Cameron Diaz) simply because she knows his name. No 'babe' has ever bothered to remember who Ted is until now. His fumbling ways mark him down as a loser from the outset. He is completely tongue-tied when asking Berenice to the senior prom, and even worse misfortune befalls him when he attempts to escort Mary. A catalogue of amusing disasters at Mary's home culminates in a cringe-making accident. The comic invention of this scene is marvellous.
Just watch for the wedding photo on Mary's mantelpiece. So far, the film has been a traditional American high school comedy, but now the story leaps forward thirteen years. Mary has qualified in medicine at Princeton and is now in private practice somewhere in Florida. Ted (Ben Stiller) has not shaken off the aura of a loser, but at least the sad hairstyle has been abandoned. He is now a regular, likeable guy - and still carrying a torch for Mary. His friend Dom (Chris Elliott) advises Ted to go after his dream. He persuades Ted to hire a private investigator in order to trace Mary. Enter Matt Dillon as the irresistibly cruddy sleazeball private eye, Pat Healey.
The film may be moving along nicely at this point, but Dillon provides booster rockets. The reviving of the dog is a gem of a scene. It is interesting to see English stand-up comic Lee Evans taking on a dramatic role (Tucker). Later, when he is Norm the pizza boy, his American accent occasionally slips, but as one would expect of him, he does the comedy mime stuff exceptionally well. There are some very funny stand-alone set pieces in the film, such as the gay bust and the squad room antics. Perhaps one shouldn't look too hard for schematic treatments in a light-hearted caper such as "Mary", but there are some discernible themes in place here. One recurrent device is dissembling, with the characters constantly surprising the viewer by revealing their 'true' identities, and similarly, much of the plot information on which we rely turns out to be bogus. It is as if the male characters know that they are unworthy of Mary's love, and have to bolster their prospects by erecting impressive facades. The only guy who remains true to himself is the one who wins her heart. Another repeating joke is the geeky music. A song duo accompanies the action with corny ditties which sound like they have been composed by thirteen-year-olds. This is much funnier in practice than it sounds in black and white - and it has the added benefit of reinforcing the film's central premise - that Ted is an unlucky dipstick who can never hope for anything good in life. The switching of the action back and forth between warm Florida and wintry Rhode Island is a useful plot mechanism because it suggests movement in the story, and it points up the contrast between the cold, Maryless north and the bright, hopeful south, where Mary is. Physical and mental disability do not normally form the subject matter of popular comedy. The Farrelly brothers and their writers (correctly, in my view) have approached this film from the angle that nothing is taboo, and (if handled well) disability can be funny. They DO handle it well, and it IS funny. "Mary" is an appealing, good-natured film which owes much to Cameron Diaz for its charm and lightness of touch. The cast clearly enjoy working together, and the final credits include an unusual treatment of "Build Me Up, Buttercup" which encapsulates the sense of exuberant good fun in which this excellent film is steeped.

Theres something About Mary - A Must for your DVD collection
posted on 19 Aug 2009If you have a DVD player then you must by this DVD. It is a classic. One of the best comedy films in a long time. Yeah, sometimes it's a bit crude but still very funny. Excellent Film
