Toy Story
posted on 04 Aug 2009A wonderfully sculpted piece of filmmaking. It brings us into a new age and may this new age have films that are just as delightfully witty as this pleasing film for all ages. The laughs are constant, there's great creativity at work, from the artists and the numerous talents who lend their voices. Hanks, Allen, Rickles and Ermey stand out in their performances.
Original and fun for the whole family!
posted on 01 Aug 2009This movie took me by storm when I saw it back in the summer of 1995 at the theatres and let me tell you, this movie is still one of the best computer animated movies of all time. In fact this movie shattered new grounds back in 1995 by not using drawing cel animation and instead this movie is the first of an unbroken chain of computer generated animated movies that has continued to date with "Finding Nemo".
The plot is absolutely joyful and stunningly original. The story revolves around the quiet family home of a quiet town where a boy owns numerous toys with his toddler sister. The toys however, are almost like beings of their own and are 'living' as well but stop 'moving' when the boy comes back into his room. However, a cowboy named Tim is the most popular 'toy' in the boys bedroom and is kept by the pillow almost every night until on his birthday, he gets a fancy astronaut toy named Buzz Lightyear who has many 'gizmos' and in time takes over the toy cowboys place as the most popular toy and Tim gets enormously jealous of this. However, after a botched attempt to remove Buzz, the cowboy himself along with Buzz end up in the hands of a punk teenager who takes joy in blowing up toys with firecrackers and or other means like burning, breaking, or smashing them and/or even taking them apart and re-assembling their parts to create 'mutant' toys and now the clock is ticking for Tim and Buzz to escape from the boys house before they end up being blown to molecules.
This movie is absolutely fun and original even by 1995 standards. The computer generated special effects are innovative and unbelievable especially considereing the fact that this movie came out nearly a whole decade ago. The whole tone of the movie is just fun and charming and is for the entire family. Not only that but this was what put the then newcomers Pixas right into the front seat of movie animation and would be the start of an unbroken streak of excellent movies from this dynamite team.
wonderful, no kidding
posted on 17 Jul 2009This was one of my favorite Disney films. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen were great in the leads. I enjoyed the entire film, and thought the computer generated animation was first rate. The story was outstanding, too.If you haven't seen this film, correct that as soon as possible. It is a movie the entire family will enjoy. Also listen for Don Rickles and John Ratzenberger in voice roles.*** out of ****
The best in family entertainment
posted on 11 Jul 2009Disney did a remarkable job bringing this movie to life for all generations to come. I have five children ages 8 to 7 months, and we all enjoy watching this movie every week. The story is original and touches the very soul of those who still have an imagination. Not only is the computer graphics terrific, but the very illusion that the characters seem alive. It's a wonderful movie.
Very "Toy"rific
posted on 20 Jun 2009I loved this movie. It can relate to the child in all of us. I really enjoy two of my favorite actors voicing Woody and Buzz. That makes it extra special to those of us who know these guys. The computer graphics were great, and the toys in the film were very well made to look real. (I wish I had a Rex) The ending was perfect because I had hoped for a sequel. I give it 10 out of 10.
Fantastically Enjoyable Classic
posted on 27 May 2009Toy Story is about an old cowboy doll's jealousy toward a new spaceman toy, and the trouble it gets them into. The movie is a joy to watch, with a witty script jam-packed with hilarious gags and funny lines, wrapped up in an engaging, adventure-type plot. It's filled with appealing characters, voiced by an extraordinary cast. Tom Hanks as the cowboy and Tim Allen as the spaceman fit their roles perfectly, backed up by the amusing support of R. Lee Ermy, Jim Varney, and John Ratzenberger. The story does rely too much on coincidences (getting picked up by the next-door neighbor) and stereotypes (surfer-talking, reckless teenage pizza delivery guy), though. Good movie
posted on 06 May 2009The simple story is about a toy named Woody who is scard about a toy called Buzz Lightyear taking over as his owners new favorite toy. This movie is fun and is the first great step towards better animation. Buzz and Woody have to get through a few things in this movie that they'll have to work together to do. The characters are memorable as they are in all pixar movies. Tim Allen and Tom Hanks did a great job with the voice work. Overall 8.4
One of the best animated movies in a long time.
posted on 15 Apr 2009The characters are great and they are really funny. In case some people have not seen it yet, I want to tell them what it's about. There's this cowboy named Woody, he was the loved toy of this boy(owner) named Andy. This toy of course could talk or else there would not be a story. But he was not the only toy, there were many other regular toys like Rex the dinosaur, Lenny the binocular(really cute), Mr.Potato Head, the Aliens(my faorite)etc. Woody was always played by Andy but on Andy's birthday, he got a so called space ranger. This space ranger was named Buzz Lightyear. He was then the liked one of the clan, all the toys thought he was cool even Andy. Woody was unhappy about this so he tried to get rid of him which kind of suceeded. Then had this whole adventure, and they(or Woody) found out that jealousy was not the key. So, they all became wonderful friends. If you really really really or just really like this movie, go out and get it. I thought this movie was perfect for all ages. I give it 5***** stars. Everything was perfect, the plot, the setting and the characters. The color was magnificant, they had many dark and right for the picture colors. They picked the right people to put the voices in the movie, and I also really like those people. Even thougth it was an animated flick used with a computer, I really felt all of it. I felt the characters and how they were suppose to be and the story. I love the lines of the characters, they said many funny things. Buzz Lightyear said, in the beginning when he came, when Woody was jealous of him "You are a sad, strange, little man. You have my pity. Farewell." Also when they were in the same scene, some characters said: Mr, Potato Head: How come you don't have a laser Woody? Woody: It's not a laser! It's a little light that blinks! Hamm:What's wrong with him? Mr. Potato Head: Laser envy. To conclude this, it's the bestest animated movie I have ever seen.
Very fun and enjoyable throughout the whole movie
posted on 19 Mar 2009TOY STORY is a great movie. I enjoyed that animation, it looked so 3-D, which made it some of the coolest animation I've seen. When I first saw this I thought it was exciting because the toys had little meetings. I also liked how Buzz Lightyear wouldn't be convinced that he was just a toy, but Woody would just keep telling him he was one. Tom Hanks was wonderful at doing the voice of Woody, and Tim Allen was great at Buzz. I also enjoyed watching "Hamm" the piggy-bank, "Rex" the dinosaur, and Mr. Potato Head. This is a very good, and well-crafted movie. Go see it. 8/10
Great fun for anyone
posted on 13 Mar 2009Toy Story is definitely a film that a kid should watch before they are a teen. Its adventure and great sense of humour is appealing to adult audiences as well, and the atmosphere is brilliant. This really is a Toy Story. The plot is indeed quite simple, and it would have to be for a classic family. Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks)is a toy 'sheriff' doll, owned by a young boy called Andy. Woodys Toy life couldn't as Andy loves him a lot, but as Andy's birthday party arises tension fills the bedroom with each toy living in fear of being replaced. Everything goes well till the last birthday present is opened.. enter Buzz Lightyear!I would be criminal to tell you the rest of the story, but as far as humour and adventure are concerned, this film impresses in both categories. The toys different personalities really contrast and make you laugh, from the smart-chat of Mr. Potatoe head, to Slinky who is Woodys best toy friend. Its so easy to follow this film - the plot and characters are easy to watch the computer graphics are top notch. Compared to modern day CGI kids films, this stands out purely because of its innocence - a simple story, theirs no techno-babble, and its really fun. This truly is the film of the Nineties!
Excellent film in which the characters grow on you.
posted on 11 Feb 2009I place this video in the watch and watch again category. The characters literally grow on a small child to the point that it's watched again and again. In the video, the plot is such that children are both entertained and learn valuable lessons concerning friendship.
Challenges are made from character to character, and although each character portrays individual strengths, in the end they must form a team to accomplish the larger goal. This film, along with "Lion King" are the most the most complete films I've seen on the market.
Great movie for kids, older kids and adults!!!
posted on 12 Jan 2009I dont really like cartoon movies that much but with this one((and the second one)) i had to make some exceptions. This movie was funny and great and tom hanks and tim allen couldnt have done a better job in acting the parts as woody and buzz, all and all it was a great movie and if u havent seen it, rent it!

It has aged wonderfully well because the story is the key
posted on 22 Aug 2009The danger with being on the cutting edge of technology is that something that looks really cool one year can look horribly dated by the end of the next year (I'm looking at you Tron!) The only way to avoid being relegated to the technological scrap bin is to make the story and characters the emphasis, so that you forget what you're watching. When Toy Story first came out, it was impossible not to talk about how it looked. That's not the reason people continue to watch it, though. They continue to watch it because it's funny, heartwarming, and genuinely entertaining.
As every child knows, Toys are living beings, and have their own lives when not being played with. Sherriff Woody is Andy's favourite Toy, and thus the leader of Andy's toy chest, which includes a neurotic T. Rex, a know-it-all piggy bank, and Mr. Potato Head. Into the mix is introduced the new cool toy: Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear, and Woody is supplanted as Andy's favourite. One thing leads to another and soon Woody and Buzz are Lost Toys trying to find their way home.
The key to the film is the performances (both animated and voice). Pixar was smart enough not to try to make a full-length film until they were ready: their computer models can fully express emotions in the face, in body language, and most importantly in the eyes. Adding in the supurb voice talents of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen and these animations come to life. Allen and Hanks were minor actors when they supplied the voices of the two main characters, but they were supurbly cast (pre-Home Improvement and pre-Philadelphia, respectively). Supporting voices by John Ratzenberger (in full Cliff Claven mode) and Don Rickles make the voice acting in this film among the best of any animated film ever made.
At the heart of the film is a standard buddy story (starting from a point where the main characters hate, or at least cannot understand, each other). Plotwise, there's nothing new here. But the execution and the attention to small details give this story a fresh look, just as computer animation was giving a fresh look to animation in general. Many (including myself) are very disappointed in Disney for going completely to computer animation - Lion King, Sleeping Beauty, etc. are ultimately better looking than any of the Pixar films. But with Toy Story, the style of animation fits so well that I cannot imagine it any other way.
This 10th anniversary 2-DVD set is a nice value. There are some neat extras, not the least of which is a detailed directors/writers commentary. There are also some reflections on the film made 10 years later, as well as some deleted/altered scenes, which are always interesting to see. Most interesting is probably the storyboard presentations of two alternate beginnings - an Andy fantasy of a shootout with Woody, and a version of the beginning that eventually became Toy Story 2's opening sequence.
