The only thing more dangerous than the line being crossed, is the cop who will cross it.
In the next 24 hours, you will learn about the streets.

PLOT SUMMARY

In a city where streets are overrun by drug dealers, those who have sworn to uphold the law are breaking them to clean up the streets. Denzel Washington plays L.A.P.D detective Alonzo Harris, a veteran narcotics officer whose methods of enforcing the law are questionable, if not corrupt. 'Training Day' follows Harris as he trains rookie Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawk) over a period 24 hours. Ethical dilemmas arise for Hoyt as well as the audience as questions present themselves as to whether or not Harris' methodology for ridding the streets of South Central Los Angeles of drugs is right or wrong.

Finally, a good movie from Antoine

posted on 25 Aug 2009

I knew that Antoine Fuqua had a good movie in him. Let's breakdown his career: He directs music videos (most notably, Gangsta's Paradise) then he gets tapped to do an American version of the Hong Kong action film. The Replacement Killers was alright, I suppose, but it certainly didn't live up to its predecessors. Then he gets stuck directing a movie with Jamie Foxx in the lead. That had disaster written all over it (Jamie Foxx is absolutely great in supporting roles). But with Bait, you really could tell that Fuqua had talent, even if the material wasn't good. But now, with Training Day, he's given a prime opportunity to show us what he's made of.
And it's clear that he's got a good career ahead of him. This movie is a real treat in this time of what seems to be one bad movie after another. It's very funny at parts, but not to the point where it's a comedy that gets all serious at the end. Denzel is, of course, great. I really don't understand why people keep making a big deal out of his performance though. Sure, it's the first time he's played a bad guy, but I honestly can't think of one time when he's given a bad performance. He's always great, so this shouldn't be a surprise. What is a surprise is Ethan Hawke. For once he's not playing the brooding, misunderstood guy. He plays this one like it should be and that was the big acting surprise (not seeing Dr. Dre as a cop).Normally, when a movie has a revelation towards the end, it changes your whole viewpoint on what happened earlier. But, without giving away anything, with this movie, it just makes you uneasy about the events that are to come. I've also read a few people talking about how the very end is a little hard to swallow. It makes perfect sense if you really paid attention to the rest of the movie. And I'm not talking about "if you blink, you miss the key point of information." This film is about setting a certain mood and state of mind. Both from the director and from the characters. If you let yourself get into it, the whole movie is a really great experience.Like I said before, this movie is very funny. But the action in it is some of the best in a while too. It's not all about special effects and messing with your visual perspective. Most of the action is shot in a way that allows you to follow it from start to finish.I loved the cameos too: Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Macy Gray, Tom Berenger, and that guy who played Redbud in The Usual Suspects. They were fun, but not distracting. Overall, I guess the movie does have it's flaws; it does seem to drag a little in parts. But it is still a great movie worth watching.
While this is Antoine Fuqua's first really good movie, I hope he now has the ability to get better and better projects. I've never ended a review with a pun before so I won't call his first two movies training days. That would just be wrong.

One of my favorite Denzel characters of all time....great movie!

I loved Denzel's character in this movie at first. It wasn't until near the end that he started to become tiresome. This movie just adds to the huge resume of Denzel that shows his versatility to play so many different characters. It is unbelievable that he is the same guy who played in The Hurricane and Remember the Titans. This guy can act, and this movie is no exception.Ethan Hawke did an excellent job as well, but Denzel is who made this movie so good. Together though, they were superb! My only gripe about this movie is that everything happens in one day. Jake (Hawke) meets with Alonzo (Washington) one morning on a "training day" to see if Jake is cut out to handle his new job as an undercover narcotics officer. Jake has a laid back, shy and almost sheltered personality while Alonzo is completely over the top and in your face. The things that happen in this one day are things that probably wouldn't happen in an entire career for most people. However it is Hollywood, so what do ya expect?Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the movie. There were many scenes which made you laugh, others which made you say wow, and then there were the ones which made you say "yea right". However, even my girlfriend (who was expecting it to totally bomb) said she enjoyed it.For a cop movie, it is very original and realistic in that it takes place right in L.A., no fabricated neighborhoods were used here. However, it does start to stray from the realistic aspect as the movie draws on, which is why I only gave it a 9 out of 10. But if you can get by that, then you'll really like this movie.

Superb!

This film was a complete surprise, in that it is the most clever thing I have seen in a good while. The choices one has to make as a cop and where to draw the line are portrayed in such vivid detail. It is great to see a flim that provokes a little thought from its viewers.

Best movie i've ever seen...

Denzel is just amazing and hawk is too!! Another one i recommend from Denzel's is: John Q. Greetz

Brutal violence isn't easy to stomach any more.

posted on 01 Aug 2009

Perhaps the timing just wasn't right. Somehow, watching Training Day two days after the horrors of September 11th made my heart and stomach that much more sensitive to violence. But Denzel Washington IS as good as ever. Ethan Hawke is strong in the boy-scout role. The script is cleverly manipulative and the direction is great. I even thought Macy Gray and Snoop Dogg hit the right note. It just felt like a finely executed streak of violence. Accurate? Maybe. But not exactly the kind of film I was in the mood for. Too many bullets in the chest, not enough redemption. I'm not always a softy, but after September 11th I'm looking for more.

Hard Boiled and extremely well acted cop drama

Antoine Fuqua's Training Day is a film that gets a big boost in the acting department from Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke, but it's script is also acute and sharp as a knife when it comes to showing corrupt cops in Los Angeles.Hawke plays Jake Loit, a rookie cop with 19 months training who's gonna get some real training (narc training) on a day in L.A. from a unconventional detective (Washington). You know a cop movie will be quite different when in the first 30 minutes a cop is smoking dope (laced with PCP), though it isn't quite simple how it got to that anyway. As is much of the movie, which never takes the easy way out of scenes (outside of a unreal ending) and stays in it's region quite well. Sometimes it seems like we've seen this before, but Washington is so convincing as a villain type, which he usually avoids, that the film is overall quite entertaining and worthwhile.
Hawke is also noteworthy as the rookie whose life and perspective of what he once thought of (the LAPD) will change. Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Macy Gray co-star. A-

Ethan Hawke was on a training day... so was Denzel.

Memorable performances by the duo. Denzel Washington shows he could be a bad character once in a while an Ethan Hawke surprised everyone in the good way.Antoine Fuqua showed to me he is a good director. Many people criticize him but I don't. He does a good job and cinematography with him is always above average. In Training Day, apart from the duo performance, it was the script that captivated me. I will never forget this film. The ghettos, the undercover cop job, the lines I may forget but if I saw the film again I will remember how good they are, of course. It's not a movie for everyone. It's a modern movie and it's meant to show reality as it is. One of my favorite gangster movies. Not mafia. Gangs. And there are a few of them...

Watchable

When this movie first came out I absolutely hated it but having just watched it again I don't think its 'that' bad. It's not a very deep movie and glosses over a lot of its issues and themes to the point that I missed them originally. Maybe I was expecting too much from this 'dark and gritty' police drama..It looks to be a simple story of morales. Nothing to do with law. Just about egos and mainly noting that a criminal is still a criminal with or without a badge. Ethan's character's turmoil seems to be more that he keeps hoping that Denzel's character will eventually show him something through his unorthodox teaching 'methods'. Instead he simply learns what not to do and that he doesn't believe in Denzel. That's all. The ac tings OK, and the direction competent. So doesn't deserve rave reviews, but probably doesn't deserve bad ones either.

Tough cop shows rookie the ropes, L.A. cop style. Great performances. Strong direction. Violent. Eratic plot. 3 Flys.Out of Five

Denzel Washington sure can play a great bad guy. In Training Day he plays Alonzo Harris the cop you'd just have to hate, unless you were as corrupt and violent as this mean b*****d is. But then he has locked away a good many criminals. He takes into his charge young Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) who hopes to make it into Alonzo's elite drug squad and in one rather hectic day shows Jake the ropes. `To protect the sheep you gotta kill the wolf and it takes a wolf to kill the wolf,' is Alonzo's mantra and he belts Jake about both morally and physically, in the name of justice, L.A. cop styleI hated Training Day for nearly all of its length but certainly not because it's a poorly made movie. It's just that it painted such an unrelenting picture of nastiness, selfishness and thuggery, and presented this message strongly as being the only right, proper and effective way of dealing with Alonzo's environment. The softer side of me just screamed for civility, niceness and the rule of law.But not Alonzo's street law. If the world is or might become really like this, especially in my town, well, we'd be in big trouble.Bad, vigilante cop movies aren't rare. Training Day is a beauty though, graced with a very good cast, a strong if erratic script from David Ayer (The Fast and the Furious, U-571) and exciting direction from Antoine Fuqua (Bait, The Replacement Killer). The performances are remarkable especially from Denzel Washington who discards that kind, lovable, demeanour of his to show just how terrific is his acting ability. Ethan Hawke complements Washington and that's a complement.Cameo's from Snoop Dogg and in particular Macy Gray as an embittered housewife are very strong as is Scott Glenn's as former cop Roger.Training Day often stretches credibility, particularly in it's final stages, but its intensity overcomes those sorts of reservations. It's not the sort of film I'd recommend for entertainment. If you enjoy tension and fine performances and you can take violence not too far to heart then Training Day could fuel your passions.3 Well Trained Flys Out of Five

THE Best Movie of 2001

posted on 12 Jul 2009

Training Day is what I would consider THE best movie of 2001, and the best Denzel Washington movie ever made. However the release of the film hurt its chances of being an Oscar contender by releasing it late summer. If it had been released during Christmas it would have been getting the rave reviews as A Beautiful Mind and Black Hawk Down have been receiving. It is without a doubt, the most underrated movie of 2001.Although, I am glad to have seen Washington nominated for Best Actor in the Golden Globes, hopefully the Academy will carry that over to the Oscars.Acting is superb, especially with Ethan Hawke! With a supporting cast such as Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg -- who were unexpectedly GREAT actors, despite their short screen presence (there are no small parts, only small actors.)The realism of the movie makes you think that the director actually went out on the streets of LA and actually filmed the real lives of corrupted cops and druglords. This movie is a MUST BUY DVD or VHS.

A movie that grows more typical with each passing minute

posted on 10 Jul 2009

You can talk about the great performance of Denzel or Ethan, you can talk about a battle of morals and a test of a persons character, but if you do that, all you are doing is ignoring the fact that this is a typical run-of-the-mill Hollywood flick. There is nothing to it. Sure it starts out promisingly enough...a gritty tell-it-like-it-is movie, reminiscent of Colors, but before too long the movie falls back on the old cliches, and becomes nothing more then a bang 'em up good cop bad cop movie. I'm not even going to waste any more time on this film...3/10.

How to Enter the Hampa

posted on 10 Jul 2009

Antoine Fuqua does an excellent job. With the big screen as an excuse, he imposes his dark, sinister view on the hampa of the Los Angeles police.Corruption is the main, but that is the work of Alonzo Harris, a great neo-villain, that doesn't value life and has understood it as a grim, violent place and has moderated himself to it. Denzel Washington is superb, mean looks, nasty bad reactions seeming so natural, I cannot believe he isn't a real filthy cop! Ethan Hawke's character is somehow naive, doesn't know what really is going all and cannot adjust to the rhythm Alonzo is accustomed to. Alonzo sets the rhythm, as a matter of fact, so we just ground for Jake (E.Hawke) to survive his rough trip."Training Day" is rough, a good movie that counted on the budget to tell a raw story, with a great cast and some neat narrative skills. Its a bitching' movie, you should watch it.

Stunning performance by Denzel Washington...

posted on 14 Jun 2009

"Training Day" was a very good movie. I like movies that shove it in your face and make you deal with it...movies like, "Black Hawk Down"...no clichés, no touching moments, just brutal, bitter realism. "Training Day" was such a movie. However, the one thing that made this film really shine was the performance by Mr. Washington. To me, a good actor is someone who just IS a character...if it isn't obvious that they are acting than they are doing a good job. That was the case with Washingon. He just was Alonzo. Every pantomime, every word, every glance was performed masterfully. Did Mr. Washington deserve his Oscar? Absolutely. 200%. Some people say, "not Oscar material" and I must wonder, what film...what performance were they watching?

Very good, INTENSE, a few plot problems

posted on 10 Jun 2009

The plot probably could have been worked through better. That said, this move is intense. My pulse rate for the last thirty minutes was probably up around 180. Denzel Washington is fantastic, and Ethan Hawke is surprisingly believable. Not for the weak of heart.

Denzel is simply the best.

posted on 25 May 2009

I will just say that Denzel is the top dog. I must give him high praise for this because this is his first time being the bad guy and he still gives a tremendously good performance. If i was an actor i would be so intimidated by this man. All I can say about the negative things people say about this movie is that they look for too much realism in a fictional story. True, their may be a lot of fact involved in this film which forces people to look for real life issues. To me that is just one of the things that makes this movie good. Denzel plays every character in the movies he's been in very well. It's too bad he had to play a negative role to win an Oscar but that's a separate issue. All in all, Denzel is one of, if not the best out there. I have yet too see a bad Denzel movie and this man has a long history. Few actors can say that. They have at least one stinker. With Denzel you have some better than others but never a bad one.

Denzel's Acadamy Award Winning Moment

posted on 25 May 2009

In his Acadamy Award Winning Performance,as best Actor. The movie, as the title suggests, follows a single day in the life of rookie cop Jake Hoyt (Hawk) as he is subject to a single day of evaluation by a senior, decorated police narcotics officer Alonzo Harris (Washington) to see if he has what it takes to be a 'narc'. Almost immediately Hoyt is placed on the back foot, constantly caught off guard by Alonzo's nature, his ability to switch between a cold, no-nonsense street-wise player, a genuinely caring and good intentioned leader, and occasionally jovial companion. From their first encounters though, where Hoyt tells Harris he will do "anything you want me to do", the situations Hoyt is taken into become more and more morally ambiguous, from the simple use of excessive force to outright illegal activity, forcing Hoyt to decide which side Harris is truly on, whether to trust him, or whether Hoyt is the unwitting centerpiece of a huge and complex web of lies and set-ups in order for Harris to for fill his own sinister motives..This is the movie that won Denzel the Oscar that year for Best Actor!! A must watch

A pretty standard cop thriller is livened up by a good (if not Oscar-worthy) performance from Washington

posted on 15 May 2009

After making his application to join a special unit within the LAPD, Officer Jake Hoyt is assigned to his new boss, Alonzo Harris for a training day on the job. Harris immediately shows Hoyt a way of work that is foreign to him – making him smoke drugs and drink at the very start of his shift. From this point onwards, Hoyt is taken on an eye opening training day that forces him to depart from his professional ethics and try to understand how things are done on the street. But is Harris really working for justice his own way or is he working for himself – and how far will Hoyt sink before he cannot justify it anymore? When this film came out I wanted to see it as a thriller; after the Oscar for Washington I wanted to see it for another reason and eventually got round to seeing it on video. The plot starts on familiar territory and pretty much continues along the same road for the whole film – it is never really more than an average cop thriller but it still manages to be quite enjoyable. The film sticks to the 'ends justify the means' plot device for the first half but then pull back to reveal a wider plot that is more of a standard thriller. In the first half this is all stuff we have seen before and it sort of works but not as well as things like The Shield etc – Alonzo is too out there to manage to make me be for him and against him; unlike the Shield where you are constantly being challenged by Mackey. The second half is more dramatic and, although a bit forced, is necessary to bring the film round to a dramatic conclusion. The Oscar for Denzel was not deserved in my opinion. Having now seen his performance I will acknowledge that he is a big part of this film working but he is not Oscar worthy here. Actually his performance is just par for the course for this type of film – yes he is a bit of a powerhouse and his tough delivery really makes the film move but it is hardly worthy of being called the best performance of the year even if it is really effective within the context of the film. Hawke is pretty good but obviously plays second fiddle to Washington's scene stealing performance; he is wide eyed as required and he serves well as our entry into Alonzo's world. The support cast features quite a few well known faces but mostly they are underused and play slightly worn ethnic clichés full of tattoos and 'mo-fo' dialogue – Macy Gray, Dre and Snoop represent the rap community while Mendes shows ass and Glenn, Yulin, Barry and Greene add recognisable faces if nothing else.Overall this is an enjoyable but standard cop thriller that has gotten better reviews than it perhaps deserves. Although he doesn't not deserve his Oscar for this, Washington's performance still drives the film and is fun nonetheless and certainly livens up what is, for all it's stars and it's publicity, is still a standard cop thriller with bells on.

One of my favorites

posted on 09 May 2009

I don't rate this one as high as my others because of the overall effect of the film. But this one was one of my favorites. The film is mostly based on the point of view of a veteran cop and a rookie but a lot of it deals with the prosecution of criminal gangster activities. I thought Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington had great chemistry together and developed this into a great gangster flick.Jake Hoyte, police officer bored of his position decides he wants to go into the realm of undercover narcotics officer. However after meeting with his training officer Alonzo Harris he finds it's not all it seems.... and a whole lot more. He learns Alonzo goes by his own rules displaying aggressive and violent behavior towards his culprits and still letting them all go in the end. However after Hoyte seems more than this crooked cop can handle it turns into betrayal after a heinous crime Hoyte refused to commit. It goes uphill and downhill. his is 24 hours of his life Jakes might never forget.Suspension, drama and action topped off with flawless performances from the entire cast. This Oscar winning thriller is awesome for fans of grueling gangster films, me being one. And enjoyable for anyone, but people who aren't interested in the corrupt side of the hood might just see this as another dirty cop flick. You might not want your kid to see this one until their a little older. 8/10

Didn't like it as much as everyone else did...

Training Day, in my eyes, did not meet the hype that it was given. Don't get me wrong it was a good movie, decent, worth a watch. But it wasn't that good. I personally did not feel that Denzel's role in the movie was fitting to him. I couldn't see Denzel in the character's shoes. The acting of course was great like most of Denzel's work, which can be easily seen by him receiving an Academy Award for the role. I have trouble putting this movie into words, it's pretty much an easy, watch able movie, but didn't meet the hype in my eyes. I personally didn't think it was that good.

Close to reality?

"Training Day" is a superb cop film. It has all the elements to succeed, first of all the acting is great. Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke give a great performance as the corrupt police and the rookie, respectively.Something impressive about this movie, is that cameras were allowed to film real gangs and their "hoods. That's something to be frightened of.You have to watch this film to understand why Denzel Washington won the Best Actor Oscar. A MUST SEE! Even if you don't like cop flicks, you should check this one. Recommended.
