I have nothing against the underwear models. It's the plot.

posted on 31 Aug 2009

It's a scary world in the realm of direct-to-DVD horror. Not because the films themselves are scary—few of them are—but because you never know what indie films are going to be good and which aren't. The After Dark Horrorfest tries to select the best of the bunch and help the viewers out, but, sadly, even those are rarely anything special. When I look at Unrest in that pitiful scene, it's not really that bad. It's certainly better than a lot of indie horror films I've seen. On the other hand, however, if I look at Unrest against the big names—not saying big names are better than indie; they often aren't—it truly earns the score I low give it.I've always wondered something about indie horror films. Supposedly, they're the ones that are the risky decisions, often fueled by directors who say they hate Hollywood and its clichés. Sounds great coming from their mouths. But then you watch their movies and they're rarely more original than billion-dollar busters. Some people defend indie movies by saying that I, as a reviewer, should be easy because they didn't have a big budget. But that's what I never understood. If they don't have a big budget, why don't they ever hide it with a truly original plot like their director's promise? It's paradoxical. It's the norm. And it's exactly why Unrest sucks. It's hard not to notice how good the actual directing in Unrest is for an indie film. It's even somewhat stylish. That lured me in from the opening, and held my attention until the near-ending when the plot started getting ridicules. The cast worked fairly well for the type of story this is. They're average collage kids, and they fit the roles and play their parts as well as any real collage kids would. Probably because they are. The use of real bodies, though a fun fact, really bears nothing on the overall experience. They look exactly like fake bodies would. Special effects are so advanced, I can't tell the difference either way. The gore was average at best. So, with decent technical details, the main reason this film fails is because of the plot. At first it seemed to be taking old horror clichés and bringing them into new, modern light thus making them less cheesy. That's okay with me, I guess. I also would like to give credit to the lack of over-the-top cheesy scare scenes. But as the plot furthered to the end, it became just like all the other cheesy supernatural horror movies ever made, and completely left me frowning. I was having a fun time until I realized just how painfully unoriginal the overall vision was. By the end, it's hard not to realize the entire movie lacks any creativity whatsoever. Though it's not as pump-filled with cheese as other supernatural horror movies—Mirrors, for example—Unrest still laugh-worthy in the end.Overall, I'm an unimpressed horror fan. I expected a fun movie with a bit of creativity, and Unrest couldn't even deliver that. I wish indie directors, like politicians, would follow their own promises. But they don't. As others have said, for a similar movie that is infinity better and more original, check out Pathology. And I think it's now safe to assume that indie horror has officially switched places with Hollywood as being the biggest source of cliché films out there. Saddening.0/10

"The film is a clever examination of the spirit and afterlife, and delivers the goods. While much has been made about the alleged use of real body parts in the film, Ipson is careful not to let his film become a gratuitous gore fest and uses blood and carnage only in the amounts necessary to propel the story. "Unrest" is a very solid effort that marks the emergence of a talent to be watched and will delight fans of the genre who want some intelligence with their horror." - Gareth Von Kallenbach, Skewed and Reviewed "What Eli Roth has done with Slovakian Hostels, Jason Todd Ipson has done for Medical School. Unrest opens with a provocatively gore-infused reality of Gross Anatomy. A bit too much for the queasy at heart and learning that they used real cadaver parts throughout the shoot made this film the anti-popcorn event of the season." – Jack Reher, The Horror Review

Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things...unless you're using it as a marketing angle!

This is the "8 Films" movie that claims to be the first movie to use a REAL human corpse! Spooky! It's debatable whether that is true, and it's never obvious which one in the movie is a real corpse, so I'm not sure they should have went to the trouble. The "moral" of the story is "don't mess with dead bodies," so this is a rather ironic marketing angle to take. Anywho, "Unrest" takes place in a hospital, where young medical student Alison and her Abercrombie model cohorts are cuttin' up cadavers. Alison lives in the hospital until her financial aid kicks through, and they apparently spend all the time they aren't sleeping (or changing into new scrubs) carving up the same old cadaver. It must be a very resilient corpse! Most of the movie is filmed in the hospital or the confines of Alison's closet-like room. This may just be due to budget restraints, but I thought it created a claustrophobic atmosphere. Considering the lead never leaves the hospital floor and spends half her time with a chopped up corpse and male models pretending to be med students, she has plenty of time to let her mind wander. When random things start happening and she gets a funny feeling in her tummy, she decides that the corpse is trying to tell her something. What, she doesn't know. The evil corpse's alleged antics are amusing, and lead to some nasty killings and bizarre sequences. One of these features our heroes swimming around in a tub of formaldehyde, unaffected by the chemical, even though they're swallowing it and getting it in their eyes. "Unrest" is yet another silly poorly-written movie in the 8 FILMS TO DIE FOR series, but it has its fair share of scares, and is entertaining despite its flaws.

Four medical students discover that not all spirits want to rest in peace.

As part of their training, four medical students perform an autopsy on an unknown cadaver only to discover that the human spirit lives until the body is laid to rest – but not all spirits want to rest in peace. This movie really got me. I would trade multi-million dollar production, A-list actors and state of the art cgi for a good old-fashioned creepy 'who goes next' horror any day. I've normally got the plot, the killer and the motive wrapped up by the second chapter but Unrest kept me guessing right to the end. And on this occasion I didn't want to see any of the characters get topped (killed) either. I hate hospitals and surgery, so throw in a few empty corridors, flickering lights and an unwelcome presence and I'm out of there. I have read other reviews and some mention the 'hype' surrounding the horror fest - I haven't seen any of this and that's the way I prefer it. Did Corri (Alison Blanchard) look like Britney Spears's 'separated at birth' sister? P.S. I checked the **Spoiler** box because I didn't want to get black listed, but I how far is too far on a plot give away?

I am about to write about this movie with the eyes of a medical student. I will use my critical eye pointing out mistakes and stupid things, but I say I did enjoy this movie!Im studying in Hungary and of course the medical curriculum is different everywhere so note that I compare things to my own experience, and certain things may be different in the USA.1. There is the scene where the two assistants come in with the body, drinking coke and a pack of McDo on the body. This is not real, this is a laic imagination about a pathologists view. There is no problem with listening to music or talking about anything possible (including eating, sex, ...) during dissection, but eating Is a problem because it is dangerous. Everybody can understand that. Who does not, gets sick real soon. Anyway the hygienic rules are not so strict in this hospital. They wear mantle and gloves or just pop in, in their green suit they wear all day. The latter is not possible. We wear mantle, gloves and extra mantle we throw away after dissection and gloves on your shoe (you can imagine the whole corridor bloody in footprints)2. You are not put in deep water in first year. You see bones first, then an arm or leg, then viscera. In third year you have pathology where is the first time you see a body not in formalin, and who died some day ago. In pathology we always know everything about the patient. We have his whole medical documentation including name, age, address, everything. And homicides, suicides does not get to pathology or anatomy classes the get to forensic pathology, where are no first years.3. They dissected that body - I dunno - 2 or 3 days and just opened the chest. It is a 2 minutes work for a professional and 5 for somebody who never did it. A complete dissection takes about 2 hours long.4. The funniest thing is the formalin tank!! I must say I have seen nothing like that, we have tanks like that but they are not so deep and organs are contained and there is no need to plunge in them, just a long glove if you want something. So I can barely imagine a tank designed so that it is hard to get a corpse out and that stick gets stuck in it. And when they jump in... I couldn't but laugh!!! I couldn't get a corpse out I surely wouldn't jump in, i would get the corpses out one by one. And even if I had a bath in formalin my eyes and mouth would ache like very much and I wouldn't be able to open it let alone kiss anybody. (and would possibly die of cancer)5. There is no so many blood in a many year old, dissected body that you can draw bloody line on the hallway.6. (not medical) Its also funny when our heroine goes for her dead fellow. Drags the book from under his all- in-blood head and disappears nobody noticing or stopping her.7. Most important!! Nobody reads atlas of anatomy before going to bed. Not because of bad dreams, but because you've studied enough all day and you want something else. These are what I remembered... I repeat again it was an enjoyable movie for me, and the music was just Wonderful!

Sick from start to finish, and that's about it.

Well I was actually looking forward to this movie but I was very disappointed. It was more of a gross-fest then anything. Now don't get me wrong, I watch horror film's to be scared, and to be grossed out, but I think this one went too far, and lost track of what they were trying to say, and went for more of the 'lets make the audience feel sick' approach. Hardly any scares, just plane old graphical autopsy's every two minutes (one scene where the professor pulled back the patients skin and rubbed his hand along the flesh to 'loosen the fat' was especially disgusting), and the occasional chuck-up.All in all, I give this movie a 2 because the acting really wasn't that bad (most of the acting), but that's about all this movie has going for it.

One of the few recent horror films I'd gladly watch again

Cursed cadaver at a medical school seems to be bringing about death and destruction to everyone who touches it. Surprisingly good horror film that may not have moments that scare you out of your seat, but manages to keep the tension up and you waiting for what is going to happen next. A bit gory, its set in a dissection lab, its never overly gross with most of the blood and gore coming from the location. The fear, for the most part, arises from the situations and from the characters. They don't know whats happening, and while we kind of do, thanks to a pre-credit dialog sequence, we still don't know the whole story. Yea I know I'm not saying too much, but there isn't much to say other then this is a really solid B movie. Its one of the best of either years 8 Films to Die For, and actually a horror film that I would gladly watch again. 8 out 10.

Unrest-Formaldehyde & Death

"You disrespect the body..you enrage the soul."Alison Blanchard(Corri English, who is quite a hottie)is an agnostic first-year in "Gross Anatomy" who "senses" a presence that is not quite right when her student group of four lift open the sheet over the body of a Brazilian woman(..the woman we see in the opening cutting herself with a piece of broken glass from her mirror). She almost immediately breaks the cardinal rule of the profession regarding examining the body for cause of death..don't personalize the body. She begins to search for clues regarding the corpse's identity and soon anyone who has come in direct contact with the mysterious dead woman winds up dead in various gruesome ways(..but most victims wind up in "the tank", a specific tank for storing certain bodies no longer in use). Along with her new lover/anatomy partner Brian(Scot Davis), Alison will find out various unusual things such as the woman's being a archaeologist with the major find of an Aztek burial ground of over 5,000 bodies sacrificed for the God Tlazolteotl, the god of fertility(..and prostitution). Also, her lab partner Carlos(Joshua Alba)digs up certain tapes containing recordings of this woman's changes in human condition as she descended into pregnancy and prostitution actually sacrificing her own unborn child. Told by her psychiatrist that "corporeal manifestations" don't exist, Alison will still remain on her dogged pursuit to end the madness by destroying the body for which might put the soul at rest and end the bloodshed.Okay, the wacky premise might not suit you because it is about some restless spirit essentially wiping out those who touched her corpse. Why Alison is allowed to live longer than others is anyone's guess, but she is the heroine so that's how screenplays work. Obviously Brian is her love-interest so he's perhaps saved by the screenplay as well. I know some have complained about the performances but I thought English was fine in the lead..it's quite a crazy situation so I do expect anyone in her spot to react with all sorts of emotion. I question her judgment, but she's effected by the dead woman so irrational behavior does seem..umm.rational in this case. My beef is more towards the investigations regarding the case of several dead murdered bodies and how a lab could continue to run(..and how Alison would ever be able to continue working in the lab after her various illegal acts such as the retrieval of a photograph considered off-limits, or her prying into the anatomy room tank). It's built for entertainment only and takes leaps in logic, but at least it's original, eh?

This movie sucked big time, I watch horror movies and this was just horrible, bad acting, it made no sense whatsoever and Hello do some history, last I check the Aztecs were not in Brazil they were in central America.. Stay away from this movie I just cant say enough, they throw in this plot of Aztecs but it just did not make any sense, I kept going back thinking I must have missed something but they just don't explained anything.. Also there is no gore whatsoever, the grosses part is the dead bodies and the formadelhyde, people die with no explanation, it was just stupid stupid stupid.. One part the actor has on white underwear then they show him again and he has black underwear and is in a different position.. That basically is how bad and dumb this movie is.. Hopefully the others will be better

There is no question this movie could have been one to remember if the story had more details, but we only get a small taste of what horror the med students are faced with. The highlight is where the movie takes place and the seclusion experienced by the lone hero who is waiting for financial assistance and is forced to live in the very building where the cadavers are stored. There are plenty of shadows and dark corners to keep you asking yourself what's around the next corner, but all the anticipation falls short of what could have been. I still enjoyed this movie, being a long time horror fan with over 1000 titles in my personal collection, and would recommend it to any horror buff that is looking for a respectable movie that many of your friends aren't familiar with.

great carpenter ... terrible blueprint

As a fan of independent films in general, and a fan of the horror genre specifically (though not unconditionally) I figured that Horror Fest was right up my alley. I've seen most of the film, and until recently the two films that I wanted to see that I hadn't yet seen were Unrest and the theatrically released The Abandoned. Now, I've seen Unrest.I had high hopes for this one from the start because right away I could see that it was helmed by a more talented and professional hand than the other films I've seen from Horror Fest. The pacing was good, the framing was thoughtful and professional, even the score was refined and appropriate, though not very original. The director even pulled good performances from most of his "no-name" cast. Yes, I thought this was going to be a higher level of horror film than the rest. I don't mind a cheesy popcorn horror film, but I also enjoy the well made polished horror. From the start, this filmed promised the latter It broke it's promise. This was an obvious and sad case of a writer/director who should take writer off of that slashed title. Even with all of the talent that Jason Todd Ipson demonstrated as a director, he could not keep me in this story for very long at all. Why? Because there was no story. There was a concept. To have a story there needs to be cohesive plot points. To have a good story there needs to be developed characters and motivation for their actions. To have a good horror story there also needs to be some threat. This script had none of those elements.(I don't want to have to put that spoiler warning on this, so I'll just make general observations.) The main protagonists were never in real danger as there was no reason at all that they could not escape the situation. Plus, there was no motivation for them to stay and do the things they did. On top of that, we knew nothing substantial about them, so I didn't care one way or the other about what happened to them. With such skillful directing and better than expected special effects and makeup, Ipson had the tools to make a great film. He just needed a good script. All good films start with a good script. I'm not a filmmakers, but I have close friends who are, and I've seem them learn that lesson up close. I wish Ipson had learned it a bit sooner. He really needed to find a writer with a script. It was like a master carpenter with great tools building a house from a faulty blueprint (that he shouldn't have drawn himself). The house falls apart and his craftsmanship means very little.I haven't seen The Abandoned yet, but I've wondered why it was the only one that got it's own theatrical release. Having seen most of the other films I do at least know why they didn't. They all had their qualities, but none had the full package. I'm convinced that Ipson would have made a film worthy of theaters if he'd just searched for a better script, or a capable writer to completely script his idea. He's the best director of the bunch so far ... still the house fell.

Beware of Brazilian Aztecs!

Okay. I watch a lot of horror movies. I mean LOADS of them. I enjoy horror as a genre, and I'm willing to put up with a lot of silly crap if a movie has other redeeming features. This movie, however, has almost none. The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one was for the Tank O Dead Guys and the Dead Guy Hook at the start of the movie. Those were fun. The rest of the flick, though...sigh.So what's wrong with this movie? Where to start? The acting is almost universally awful. The script is beyond awful. It's ridiculous. The main character repeats her taglines about "feeling something" in the presence of the cadaver so many times it's just silly. When she tells the school psychologist "There's something wrong with my cadaver," the entire audience erupted in laughter. (Wrong with it? Well, uh, it's DEAD...) In fact, the Seattle audience laughed through most of this piece of medical waste."Unrest" starts out promising, with floating corpses and some icky-cool dissection scenes. Then it gets boring. Then it gets stupid. Um...people swimming of formaldehyde? The fumes alone from that quantity of the stuff would kill your silly ass. A woman who picks up an angry Aztec goddess...in BRAZIL??? I guess it got bored with Mexico and went to Brazil for spring break. Then there was the Aztec goddess they picked for the job. Tlazoteotl is a fertility and sex goddess. And she's not a literal "eater of filth." She was a sineater--she purified the dying at the end of their lives. As far as Aztec gods go (and they all tended to be pretty nasty), she was a downright sweetie. Why not pick Coatlicue, who was a mother/death goddess who wore a necklace of human hands and stunk like decaying flesh? Or Xipetotec, the Flayed God? Just thinking about a Flayed God creeps me out! But no. They had to go with the Ho Goddess.Worst of all, the movie just wasn't scary. It didn't even get a startle out of me. And when I can't get scary, I'll accept good gore, but there wasn't even any of that. All the murders took place offscreen. The POSTER is scarier than the entire movie.I can't say I regret seeing this movie at Horrorfest. I went with a good friend, and we laughed our butts off. But y'know, we could have seen Borat. Borat in that bathing suit thing alone is scarier than anything in Unrest.

Like all of After Dark's Horrorfest films Unrest is an interesting selection but unlike most of the others the film is pretty successful at what it aims to do, most of which is entertain. Unrest tells the original and inventive story of a group of med students who disrespect a cadaver and pay the price for it. The film's storyline is a little more complex and campy than that but the other stuff is better seen and not read about. This film works because it's cheesy, it doesn't take itself too seriously. And because of the silliness sometimes it inspires laughs that I believe are mostly intentional. The main performance by Corri English is quite impressive and the cast is very attractive and talented. The film is creepy but not terrifying and does sport some grotesque med lab imagery and a terrifying sequence inside a cadaver tank. I'm not sure if I really enjoyed this film because the rest of them were pretty much stinkers, or if it was because it had better sound and film quality. But one thing is for sure I did enjoy this film the most. It offers more of what i came to see little horror gems that are never seen by mainstream audiences. It's graphic, a little disturbing, original and memorable. Unrest may not be a great film but it's very good at what it's supposed to be. It rattles your nerves and brings something new to the table. what else can you ask for, in a horror film? It's also very impressive for the simple reason that it had such a low budget and manages to have such a great creepy but some what over the top score and uses it's surroundings so greatly never reducing itself into using cheesy cgi. It instead opts for a more traditional and story based approach, which it pulls off nicely

You'll be Dissected.

Great acting! For all the restrained terror that tormented the med students, I was turned into a tight ball of fear in the theater seats by their tension. I loved the story which unfolds like a mystery novel. Messages written in blood and the spookiness of deja vus seem like normal feed to scare the audience but what really got to me was the mix of Aztec mythology. What is a sensible atheist to do with that? Do not believe any of it of course! And watch your friends. Have more conversations with your professor and department head and hope for the best. The space between doubt and realization becomes bridged by blood.Unrest dissects and mutilates. This is one of the best horror movies I've seen that not only had me in a tight ball at my chair but also had me trapped in my head. I don't want to believe that any of it can be remotely possible but damn…. Now I don't really know what to think. All I can say is see Unrest. It's awesome.

A group of medical students learn a lesson about respecting the dead, and never underestimate anything, for the soul could've been left behind. Solid performances from all the new comers make this more of a roller coaster ride and a great low budget experience. A pretty good director as well, signs of real potential with this director with his first full length feature film. There isn't a lot more to say...A movie like Unrest isn't meant to be taken seriously. If you look at it as a horror film to make you cringe then you'll love it...Don't compare it to horror film greats and take it like it is.Watch Unrest.8/10

Sometimes it takes strange and awful events to happen, for someone to find her spiritual path in life. This time it is a med student, Alison Blanchard (Corri English), who finds herself wrapped in a series of strange deaths at her med school's morgue. Forced into the role of the detective, Alison goes on a journey and finds herself at the edge of reason, when she has to make the jump from being an atheist to finding out what causes these murders to happen. Somewhat cliché, but very cleverly done, this film actually scares the living sh*t out of you. The acting is very believable and the rest of the crew did a great job at helping to create a suspenseful and scary film. Wow! Many horror films, including The Hills Have Eyes, American Haunting, Slither, and other recently released ones, look like multimillion dollar goliaths where as Unrest is the definite David of this falls horror releases. I recommend this film highly, you will not be disappointed!

Not The Best, But Not The Worst

I could see why this movie could be overlooked. When I think about all the films in the Afterdark Horrorfest series, this isn't exactly the first that comes to mind. It's just a really unnoticeable film, and to me, I thought it was just a little unimportant to the Afterdark Horrorfest movies. While this film "WAS" good, it wasn't good enough to leave an impact on the spectator. First of all, it starts off a little slow, and it doesn't start getting interesting for awhile. When it finally does get interesting, there are no intense or suspenseful scenes. Near the end, it gets slow again, and it just doesn't finish like you'd hoped it would. I don't see why this film has won more awards than all the other Afterdark Horrorfest films, because it isn't the best of the series, but it was good, and I did enjoy watching it. I'm glad I had the chance to see it.

Fun if flawed little cadaver horror

I didn't expect too much going into Unrest and it managed to be marginally better than my expectations, though it wasn't that great of a film. For me its biggest advantage came from the fact that I knew very little about what sort of thing was going to go down in the film and it doesn't sign post right from the beginning what the deal is so there is a certain element of curiosity present. In short therefore, the film concerns anatomy students for whom a routine dissection leads to some unnerving shenanigans. Though this isn't the most original or spectacular of films I'm going to leave it at that, for the sake of sustaining some of the mystery. The acting is decent enough to keep the film ticking along, with Corrie English and Scot Davis pretty good as the leads, whilst Derrick O'Connor is suitably authoritative as the professor in charge. There are no acting fireworks but things chug along nicely enough. There are some nice special effects too, the cadavers are well designed, the occasional gruesome shots look fairly grisly, and though there is little in the way of actual gore, a reasonable portion of the red stuff is spilt at times. It should be noted that the advertising ploy concerning the use of an actual corpse is untruthful, but the effects are all pretty good. The direction, (from Jason Todd Ipson) and photography help sustain a cold, forbidding atmosphere throughout and the climax conjures up mild thrills. The problems with the film come from plot holes mainly, for when one considers how everything works in the film, most of the important plot points do not stack up. Even a minor amount of probing reveals the film to be very shakily founded, desperately unlikely not in the supernatural events but in the situation leading into them. Given that the film takes a serious, non campy approach, the contrivances and unlikely events on which the body of the film is founded really undermine it. Also, there are some idiotic character decisions, and most drastically, a completely unbelievable scene involving formaldehyde. Its a moment that anyone can see is thoroughly daft and it reeks of bad writing. These things might be forgivable if the film was purposefully over the top but it takes itself seriously. So at the end, this is a fairly fun ride with some good moments. Its well enough directed and acted, with OK atmosphere and shocks producing an overall fairly fun time, but the writing really hold it back. So, worth a watch if it sounds appealing, but not that great.

I loved this movie's look and the use of location and cadavers is terrific. The story is a good one. Corrie English is good to look at gives a good performance. The men provide some eye candy while changing into their scrubs, so does Corrie. As the other reviewer mentioned, the music was totally right. My problem comes with the murkiness of the plot in terms of who the cadaver was and what truly caused her to change that in turn caused so much havoc after death. I will probably watch this again when it comes out on video and maybe it will be more clear to me. If it is, I will come back and edit my comment. For now, this film becomes the low point of my two days at Horrorfest's Eight Films to Die For.

I thought Corri English was awesome in this, and it doesn't hurt that she is smoking hot. I had a creepy and disturbing feeling watching the film as well….in other words it is a must see for any horror fan with a fetish for blood and guts. I recommend it as a good first movie to see if you are going to "8 Films to Die For," it will definitely put you in the right mood for the weekend." I will admit that i did not go to the theater in hopes of seeing this film, but when 007 was sold out, this was our fall back. I'm glad my friends and got to see this film. 007 can wait till next weekend or tomorrow
