Cute

I expected this movie to have more comedy to it, but when it was funny, it was definitely funny. I agree with the majority of opinions that it was an average movie, but it was a nice, cute romance with funny tossed in. Worth seeing, but I'd probably recommend waiting for it on rental.

Highly entertaining chick flick

The sets and costumes reminded me of Down With Love. This is a very enjoyable comedy with a happy ending the girls will thoroughly enjoy.

better than the other reviews suggest! (Really 3 1/2 stars)

I rented this movie despite having heard some very bad reviews and also knowing that it's stay in the cinemas here in Australia was very short... What I discovered was a movie (that despite its supposed endless re-editing) that was funny and heartwarming, and a movie that so long as your not in the mood for the pianist is a well acted little comedy. It's a nice pick me up in a world where not everything is always hunky-dory.
View from the Top is popcorn and nothing else, but that dosen't make it bad, it's just not a masterpiece, at least it's a nice bit of popcorn.

one of the worst movies I have ever seen...

How to make a movie about nothing...well, if you want to see how it's possible then you have to see View from the top. A very weak script and no humor. I went to see it because I thought it will make me lough, but no, it did the opisite thing...I went out of the cinema wondering, why is it on the big screen?!?!?! Paltrow and Myers couldn't save it also.

Better than all those romantic-comedies out there!

View from the top is great! Amazing cast, very good music, great script, good ideas... Of course, it's a romantic-comedy so don't expect to be amazed by it but it is indeed the best romantic-comedy I've seen in a long time. It's motivating, it gives you strength... and it's real! I give it a good 9/10.

Abysmal

This may have been the single worst large studio production I have ever seen. Beginning with the acting, Gwynneth Paltrow sleepwalks through this one like no actor I have ever seen. The one thing she displayed in this putrid mess was spectacular posture. Her dialog lacked life, which was largely due to it's laughable nature. Her attempts at physical comedy were so amateurish that I began to wonder if the whole thing was a spoof. Christina Appelgate couldn't have been worse if she were deceased. Candice Bergen tried desperately to reprise her Miss Congeniality role even though her character was written without any personal depth. Even the likable Mark Ruffalo came off poorly when confronted with the terrible direction and revolting writing that backed this travesty. When Mike Myers provides the best performance in your movie, you know you are in trouble.I watched the movie alone and I asked myself, aloud, if this were the unfunniest comedy I had ever seen or the least moving drama. That is, the movie was so bad I was talking to myself. The story of a small town resident trying to get away has been done so frequently that undertaking it again requires something special. A View From the Top lacked that something. The nadir occurs when Appelgate and Paltrow fight in the galley of an otherwise empty plane, spilling peanuts and drink carts along the way. Maybe that sounds amusing, but when you see the actresses looking for things to knock over you know you are in the midst of a bad dream. Actually, check that. The nadir occurs when several of the students, including our heroine, first go to Sally Westin's (Bergen) house for dinner and we are subjected to a stream of jokes surrounding the homosexuality of Randy Jones (Josh Molina) that are at best unfunny and at worst offensively homophobic. Before I get myself worked up any more over this, let me just say stay away from this film.

Is this a retro comedy?

I personally thought View From The Top was a great movie. However, I was not quite sure which decade it was set in because of the big bouffant hairdos and the mini-skirts. Gwyneth Paltrow did okay as Donna, the character who had character enough to succeed even in adversity. Kelly Preston, although had a smaller role than Paltrow and Christina Applegate, was sympathetic enough to warrant more air time than she actually got.Christina Applegate did well as Donna's sidekick and her character's strengths as well as weaknesses were portrayed quite brilliantly. Mark Ruffalo as the love interest was also well cast, and was believably sexy enough to appeal no doubt to the female viewers to whom this movie was targeted at. Candice Bergen was a joy as the figurehead of Royalty Airlines and confidante to Gwyneth Paltrow and all her scenes were clever and funny.Mike Myers as the test giver was fair, but unpredictable. Perhaps Jim Carrey could have portrayed the character with his usual zaniness, but to each his own.The movie stood alone and like other comedies does not need a follow-up.Brian T

really 3 and 1/2 but the don't have half stars

this is a really cute movie IF you take it as a spoof on the flight attendant business, and you ignore the crumy acting in spots. Also there are parts of it that are really WAY to corny. Other than that it is a cute movie. I really liked it. The acting is splotchy, but there are good areas. It is adorable though. It has a good plot line, that keeps you hooked throughout the movie, IF you like girly chick flicks.

Not What I Expected....

This movie is not all what I expected. Surprisingly, it's funny and witty, and the characters completely draw you into the plot. Gwenyth Paltrow plays a young woman named Donna Jensen who is looking to get out of her small town. She decides to become a flight attendant, and of course, madness ensues. Highlights include Mike Myers who is hilarious as always as one of Donna's instructors, and the amazing Candice Bergen plays a famous flight attendant who becomes Donna's idol. Mark Ruffalo plays Donna's love interest in the film, and I will guarantee to all of my fellow ladies that you will fall for his radiant smile and infectious humor. This is a great movie to watch with a group of friends, with that special someone, or if you just want to smile. I recommend it to everyone who likes to laugh!

An unoriginal, clichéd snoozefest.

"View from the Top" is Film 101 for how to do the "Small-Town Person Who Dreams of Big Success But Realizes True Love is Preferable" story in the plainest, most generic, and least interesting way possible. If you've seen "Doc Hollywood," which does this type of story with charm, humor, and lovable characters, you needn't see this one.Gwyneth Paltrow plays Donna Jensen, a Nevada woman who lives in a trailer and works at the local department store in a job she got because her high school sweetheart is the store manager. She dreams of bigger things, and decides that becoming a stewardess is the gateway to world travel and prestige. To make this trip seem worthwhile, the plot presents an obstacle or two that she must overcome to get there, but the plot, which moves along briskly, and culminates in what appears to be its emotional/character climax only one hour into the film, is so devoid of any true character conflict or development, and so lacking in any explanation for some of the characters' actions, that the entire thing just seems so pre-ordained. Things happen because the plot requires them, not because they follow any interesting character trait. Why, for example, does Kelly Preston (looking more pulchritudinous than ever), appear, and then, in violation of Roger Ebert's Law of Economy of Characters, suddenly disappear? Why is nothing made of her character or her not moving on to the next level? (Because the plot needed Gwyneth to not be alone when she started out on her first flight, but once she and Christina moved onto the next level, they no longer needed Preston.)Why, for example, does Candice Bergen, the veteran flight attendant who married rich and who's promoted her recipe for flight attendant success on Oprah, suddenly grab a group of flight attendant trainees at random for no reason and invite them to dinner at her home? (Because the plot requires her to become Donna's mentor.)Why does Rob Lowe appear for two short scenes and then disappear? (Don't ask me to explain THIS one in parenthesis, because I have no idea. Maybe his other scenes were cut. Given the hour and twenty minute running time-which is followed by unfunny outakes no doubt meant to pad it-that Stacey Dash is also almost entirely absent from the movie, and that Christian Slater and Regis Philbin's cameos, were also absent, they may have left quite a lot on the cutting room floor.)As Gwyneth aims for the big international First Class job, the movie doesn't bother to even try making the Big Stumbling Block to that dream remotely mysterious. If what happened to her wasn't totally obvious to you, well, then maybe this is your type of movie, but this review isn't. :)There is absolutely no sense of tension, nor any sympathy for the characters, who are utter cardboard. Nothing they do feels important, has any consequence, reveals character or incites any kind of development. There is never the sense that anything that the characters do is done because they have any kind of motivation or desire.I have a feeling, though, that I will be in the minority. More than one friend who saw it told me they loved it, and said that Mike Myers was "hilarious" in it. Personally, I didn't find a single one of his gags funny. I thought his character was a self-important nerd, and rather than acknowledge that nerds' jokes aren't funny, and that humor should come at the EXPENSE of the nerd, the movie instead makes believe his gags are actually funny. Given how most people in the audience laughed throughout it, I imagine this movie will do well. Personally, I was far more impressed with Christina Applegate, who looks quite delicious in this film, and fills out a blue bikini quite nicely.

Film-Lite!

Gwyneth Paltrow plays Donna, a poor girl from the boonies who longs for escape and adventure in "View From Above." She aspires to follow in the footsteps of her role model, and eventual mentor, (Candice Bergen), as an international flight attendant. With dreams of Paris and New York City dancing in her head, she enters Royalty Airlines' training school, run by a very funny Mike Myers. She proves to be a stellar student but runs into trouble with her double-dealing, kleptomaniac best friend.(Christina Applegate). Instead of Paris, Donna pulls Cleveland as a billet, and is saved from total despair by love interest, Mark Ruffalo.

This film is a harmless bit of fluff that is, at times, just zany enough to be fun. The story plays out like a camp fairy tale, happy ending and all. One of the best spots is the run of credits at the movie's end, juxtaposed over hilarious film clips that were cut from the unfinished product. I got pulled into watching this with my daughter, and it really wasn't bad. Cost of a DVD rental, $4.00. Cost of time spent snuggling with daughter - Priceless!

I'm glad SOME of you agree with me here.

I saw this movie when it came out in theaters last year, not by choice, by force! I'm sure I wasn't the only guy forced into this sorry excuse for a movie by their girlfriend. I am not one of the average guys who are only interested in hardcore action, or something else advertised right... My mind is open to almost any movie, but crap! This movie is about as original as my post for it ( not original lol)...I saw another "Chick Flick" around that same time called "Down with Love" and enjoyed that one, one hundred times better. In "View From the Top" the characters were terrible and undeveloped completely. The plane could have crashed in the movie and I definitely wouldn't have shed one tear of sympathy for Christine or any of the other flight attendants on board...DON'T LET YOUR GIRLFRIEND DRAG YOU INTO THIS ONE!! lol 2 out of 10...got the 2 because of Mike Myres's small part.

I bet the quality cast wish the'y left this one alone

What a terrible movie. Some good actors competing to see who can make themselves the least credible in this badly written drivel. It is highly sexist, inaccurate unfunny and filled with music presumably to take your mind off the bad screenplay. The plot is weak but could have been improved to at least make something vaguely entertaining. The viewer is constantly made to think that it will get better but it never does. There is no point in describing the plot because the title summary at the top of the page tells it all. It really is as shallow as that. I'm so glad I did not see this in a cinema. As it is I'd like to claim my electricity money back. Alas I can never have back the 90mins of my life that I wasted. Somebody should be sued for this! One tiny redeeming feature was the use of pseudo Technicolour which was moderately interesting (for about 2 minutes. Do not waste your time on this movie.

I expected "Airplane"...I got "Sleepless In Seattle"

Upon seeing the previews of this film I said to myself "Hey another sequal to Airplane" but I was wrong. This film is not that funny and has more drama in it than I see in a day (and Im a High School student). Its a motivational film that will have the critics crying but dont believe them its not all that great. The funny parts of the movie are few and far in between. A good highlight is the fight between the two girls...but still it was sorry. If you like old inspritional music then this film is for you but if your in the mood for a good movie I suggest DreamCatcher.3/10

Don't see on rating - watch the movies!

The sensation of the gulp of the fresh air and some lightness gives this film. Certainly this good luck of the whole command - scenario, director and constellations actor. Do not pretend on professional estimation, but simply several hatch, daub to the general picture, which we here draw.Like and plot simple, but film watch on one breathing. This talent. Where is described this secret, this recipe, on which other could do such films? The special words to Gwyneth Paltrow. She holds whole film. For such play I have offered to present her in nomination "Best role of the year". Inexhaustible sincerity, truthfulness and brilliantly. But after all this comedy. I want you more such roles and in the other film good luck!

I am amazed this hasn't incited a riot

If I were a female, I would be so profoundly insulted by the premise and execution of this movie that I would never let it rest. This movie would have me believe that a woman's role in this world is twofold: 1) taking service positions with no ambition of anything else and 2) Finding a boyfriend/husband. This movie could have been considered offensive in 1950.Outwardly this is not unpleasant fluff, and only the ideology of the thing was truly offensive to me. But don't expect any laughs. Yeah... I get it... Mike Myers has a googly eye, thats just hilarious. Amazingly that doesn't fly as well as one would think.

Not worth time nor money.

The story premise is promising. The rest of the movie does not follow through on the premise. The name stars are used to draw attendance and conversely to provide jobs for them. Mike Myers does provide isolated comic relief to a flat story. This should have gone straight to video, mercifully. Sorry.

A candy-coated piece of CRAP

posted on 13 Jan 2009

I knew this film was going to be banal and insipid going into it, but I figured I would just get it out of the way anyway. Needless to say, there were no surprises other than the fact that Paltrow and Ruffalo would allow themselves to be associated with this movie. Candice Bergen already pimped herself out to one of those OTHER `feel good for being a pretty and find easy success' films, `Miss Congeniality', so her appearance was no shocker. The only problem I had with this film other than the fact that it was pure, unadulterated crap is that it was watcheable crap - it was a horrid film, but not so horrid that I was watching paint dry instead. This in no way is a tribute to the film however - it's more of a tribute to my abject laziness.--Shelly

boring

This movie is very boring and superficial. There isn't anything deep about it, and it gives 21st century women a bad name, essentially portraying there goals and desires as self-centered and base. Rent something else instead.
