His son. His life. His freedom. He's taking them all back.
Bonnie And Clyde - On The Flip Side
"I'll always come back for you," single father O2 tells his young son Junior. This parental promise is put to the test when O2 is suddenly plunged into a do-or-die situation; trying to go straight for Junior's sake, this recently paroled ex-con is forced to go back outside the law after his son is kidnapped in a carjacking. The resulting chase and shootout have left Junior in the hands of Meat, the vicious leader of the Outlaw Syndicate. O2's shady cousin Lucky tries to mediate, but is caught between criminal and family loyalties. The only person who can or will help O2 get his son back is wily street-smart hustler Coco, whose path fatefully crossed O2's just moments before the kidnapping. When Lucky gets word to O2 that Meat expects $100,000 for Junior's freedom, O2 and Coco seize the opportunity to pit rival elements of the South Los Angeles underworld against each other. "It's either all or nothing," realizes O2. With the clock ticking down, the heat between O2 and Coco rises as they become a lawbreaking couple, on an tear through a range of Los Angeles neighborhoods. Can they outwit the underworld and save Junior and themselves?

It sure isn't 'Deep' but it's a fun ride
posted on 07 Aug 2009This isn't a great movie but it's good, fun, mindless entertainment. I'm a huge fan of "Gridlock'd" and went into this film expecting a clever take on the action genre from Vondie Curtis Hall. What I got was an action-packed movie that borrowed from many films before it; its saving grace is its urban twist, the tongue in cheek humor (Kimora Lee's cameo is priceless) and its stars, Tyrese Gibson, Meagan Good and Larenz Tate. If you're fans of either actor, you'll allow yourself to believe the unbelievable moments--and there are many of them. The action is non-stop, the hip hop soundtrack delivers in all the right places and you could plant a pretty garden in the plot holes but you'll certainly get your money's worth with the gunfights, beautiful people and adrenaline racing chase scenes--and in the end, isn't that what action films are all about?
Violent with harsh language but I liked it.
posted on 28 Jun 2009Waist deep is a variation on a theme. The main character is out of jail and going straight however after his car is carjacked with his son in the back seat he is forced off the straight and narrow. I liked the way he came to the aid of a girl being beaten up and that initially he tried to raise the money to get back his son by robbing the bad guys even though he had to rob bank in order to get to the robbers safety deposit boxes. Well eventually he has the robbers and the police after him and he's faced with a 'Thelma and Louise' standoff. The girl who he saved and eventually hooked up with gets away with his son and you think it ends there. If you see the film you will guess how it ends as I did but I liked it just the same. So what is Waist Deep? It's a familiar story with violence and bad language but I liked it.
Waist Deep a definite go see
posted on 20 Jun 2009This movie was hot. This is the first film where Tyrese accepted his character and it was natural. His character was totally believable. Lorenze Tate did his thing as well, as usual. Robi Reed casted correctly with all three of their roles. Meagan Good looked beautiful. Her acting was superb. Her character choices were right on. The makeup artist did a good job as well, from the bloody takes to the consistency with the injuries, it was on on cue. The film touches all of your emotions. The ending was hot. This film should be playing in all of the theaters. If you haven't checked it out, you are missing a fast paced great action film.
Drowns in Incompetence.
posted on 10 Jun 2009An ex-con (Tyrese Gibson) trying to go straight is pulled back into the life after his young son (Henry Hunter Hall) is kidnapped by an urban gang led by a sadistic machete-wielding boss (The Game). Throw in red-hot small-time hustler Meagan Good and borderline alcoholic Larenz Tate (as Gibson's inept cousin) and we have a typical modern-day crime picture that has lots more bullets than brains. Gibson and Good make an alluring couple, but neither have much talent in the end. The Game is down-right creepy and Tate seems like he is just going through the motions after successful roles in "Ray" and "Crash". "Waist Deep" stays at an adequate spot for a good portion of its running time, but then finally sinks with an unwanted and ridiculous final act. Will definitely be mentioned with the lesser productions of the year. 2 stars out of 5.
Modern day Romeo & Juliette!
posted on 21 Apr 2009This is not a total waist of time, as some might suggest. It is trying to relate and entertain to younger and "harder" audiences! I liked what they were trying to accomplish here! Although I could not relate in anyway. There are some unnecessary graphic violence scenes that do not add to the story line, IMHO! The one scene was meant to portrait the "baddie" as willing to do anything to have his way, all for money! The ending scene is a little over the top, especially the music. If you want to see a modern day version of Romeo & Juliette trying to accomplish the damn near impossible for sake of love then you might like this movie. Overall I'm glad I watched it!
An entertaining action movie
posted on 02 Mar 2009Sure Curtis Halls film about an ex-convict getting tangled up with a gang after his car is hijacked is a bit far-fetched, not exactly realistic, but so what, its a movie, and a action movie to be exact. I don't think this is nearly as bad as the rating shows, i enjoyed, thought it was effective for what it was and that Tyrese was somewhat less annoying here. I liked Larenz tate and Meagan Good a lot in their roles. I thought The Game did well as the antagonist as well, and now im eager to see how he did in Street Kings. From a cinematic point of view, its nothing special, however Curtis Hall did a decent enough job writing and directing this urban drama.IMDb Rating: 5.5. MY Rating: 8/10
One of the Worst Movies Ever
posted on 28 Feb 2009The only reason I gave this movie a two was because Megan Good look really hot in it. It features some of the worse actors I've ever seen, and the story is one of the most predictable and also just plain stupid. I mean a 6 year old could come up with the script for Waist Deep, and the child actor in it is The worst I've ever seen. After the first 30 minutes you can predict everything that is going to happen very easily, I would have rather watched an episode of Pokemon, for at least I would have came away feeling smarter than I did after this movie. If your really bored and have nothing to do, don't go see this movie, for your boredom is better than the irritation that his movie will bring you. Avoid this at all costs.
"His Son. His Life. His Freedom. He's Taking Them All Back." --- Tagline For "Waist Deep"
posted on 10 Feb 2009"Waist Deep" (2006) Directed By: Vondie Curtis-Hall Starring: Tyrese Gibson, Meagan Good, Larenz Tate, Henry Hunter Hall, & The Game MPAA Rating: "R" (for strong violence and pervasive language) I'm going to keep this as brief as possible. "Waist Deep" is a boring and uninspired movie that plods along at a snail's pace and very rarely entertains. There! I could end right here and you would understand most of my feelings towards this movie. For a movie that is so clichéd and predictable, I expected it to be a fun B-movie that didn't take itself too seriously. Alas, "Waist Deep" could be compared to a hamburger from Burger King being placed on expensive china and served with fine wine. It is a movie that is cheap and amateurish and yet it pretends to be a serious, dark, and deeply traumatic drama. There was rarely an entertaining moment and the pacing seemed to practically stop at large intervals--a death sentence for a movie that is a mere ninety-seven minutes. On the slight upside, the leads performances from Tyrese Gibson and Meagan Good are credible and almost enough to fool you into thinking that you are enjoying yourself I said "almost".An ex-convict named O2 (Gibson) is pulled back into the crime ring when his car is stolen with his son (Hall) in the backseat. His son ends up in the hands of Meat (The Game), a greedy crime lord with a cold, vicious heart. O2's cousin, Lucky (Tate), tries to help out, but fails to get his son back. The only person who can help him is the sexy vixen, Coco (Good), who just so happened to wander into O2's life moments earlier. Meat wants $100,000 in exchange for O2's son alive and O2 and Coco decide to take the advantage of the situation, by pitting two rival gangs against each other. As tensions explode and a brutal, bloody war is raged, O2 and Coco are forced into a hellish world that will take them to the brink of death if they want to find his son and save themselves. Does this plot sound interesting to you? Well, it did to me too and, by all means, it should have been. Instead, this interesting plot was turned into a mess of a film that nearly bored me to death.Tyrese Gibson and Meagan Good are easily the best aspects of the movie. They radiate on screen and the only reason I kept watching to the end was to see what happened to their characters. Henry Hunter Hall also does a fine job, given his age. Larenz Tate, probably best known for his role in the spectacular "Crash", is given nothing to work with. His part is flat, two-dimensional, and completely cardboard. He did what he could unfortunately, it wasn't enough. The Game scowled a lot. I don't know when scowling became acting, but I would assume that it was when the rapper, The Game, said that he wanted to act (since, upon searching him on Google, I find that they have no pictures of him smiling or even slightly smirking). Kimora Lee Simmons must be desperate for work. What was she doing here? Her part was practically a cameo--a role that any out-of-work actor could have pulled off. Here's an idea, Hollywood: hire people who need work and who want to get into the business for such minute, unimportant roles. If this movie is on your "Must-See" list, then I beg you to reconsider. I have always thought that, as long as a movie is entertaining, it deserves a watch even if it is just a single viewing. However, "Waist Deep" is not an entertaining movie. It is dull, boring, and utterly lifeless. However, I do not have such a profound hatred for it, as I did for "Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector", and I do not think that it is poorly-made like "Phat Girlz". It is a well-directed movie that is shot stylishly and sleekly. However, the movie, no matter how well-made technically, is just not a good movie. The movie drags around for ninety minutes and then, within the last seven, manages to completely go from "unbelievable" to "completely and utterly ridiculous". Are we really supposed to buy this sappy, happy ending? It seemed tacked on to please the viewers who want everything to end with the line "And they lived happily ever after". Happy endings are fine, if done properly. This movie did not do it properly. It was an unsatisfying conclusion to a bad movie.Final Thought: Tyrese Gibson and Meagan Good are the only good things about this boring movie.Overall Rating: 3/10 (C)
Urban western
posted on 10 Feb 2009This would have been a great B Western film. Having an R rating, I expected lots of sex and nudity, but there wasn't ANY. And the one love scene was refreshingly tasteful and brief. Gibson has a great future as a leading man. Gives real performances in unreal situations, but his big film hasn't been made yet, but it will be. The girl could have been played by any foxy black chick. Meagan Good added nothing to the film. The Game also could have been played by any black actor who can scowl. Like a rap CD album cover. It's gotten really old, that mean scowl. Like he's just eaten a stink bug. Larenz Tate? Also a part that any black actor could have played. Gibson and the boy who played his son were the only actors who rose above and grabbed your eye. And the only real funny moment in the film comes from the only white guy in the film. Whoa! Destined for the under $5 DVD rack at a used DVD store near you.
Great Pacing as a straight action flick.....**Minor Spoiler Alert at the end
posted on 29 Jan 2009Saw this last night at the L.A. Film festival. Only went because it was FREE, but was pleasantly surprised at the pacing. There were implausible moments and a cheesy drawn out cell phone conversation..in the middle of a police chase, with a hackneyed "Shawshank Redemption"/ "Thelma & Louise" ending, but Tyrese Gibson and Megan Goode draw you in and make you want to see where this thing goes. They look great and had chemistry.(Megan, it's time for you to do more films like "Brick". I think you have the range to break out in some different roles outside off 'hood flicks) Kimora Lee Simmons is hilarious in her cameo. She may need to do a movie herself! Just check out the way she curls her lip when she gets an unwanted man in her house. I will have to add her performance to my collection of "Great Actor Scenes that stand out by themselves"There are clichés galore, and one scene I found insulting to elderly black women. (Megan's character calls a grandmotherly-looking black woman the "B-word". It was funny in an earlier scene where Megan Goode's character is called one off screen for holding up traffic, but it doesn't work when used on an old woman in a bank. Kasi, you shoulda told Vondie to drop that line!) Lastly, I always laugh when I see so-called "gangsters" making money hand over foot with their hustling, but they never move to nicer areas? You have thousands of dollars stashed in safety deposit boxes and $250,000 worth of jewelry, and you still live in a jacked up house in the worst parts of L.A.? Dumb.Hunter Hall who plays the kidnapped son is a cute little boy, but his acting was stilted and unnatural in several scenes to the point of being distracting. But he sure does look like his momma! (Kasi, you need to be in more movies! We miss you!) This movie is strictly popcorn fun. As Mr. Vondi Curtis Hall stated before showing his film last night, "This is a movie, not necessarily a film" in the artsy-fartsy sense. Most critics have been complaining that it's hodge-podge of various genres, but it works for what it tries to do: tell the journey of a single-parent father trying to save his son at all costs. How often do you get to see that? **(And the brother survives? Shee-itt!)Lessons learned from this flick? You can shoot and kill a handful of bad people, rob empty houses in the Hollywood Hills because a half naked girl can fool police, and you can drive to Mexico and live happily ever after in a Malibu-styled beach house without a passport, just a bag full of money. Let me get my glock!
Surprisingly good
posted on 06 Dec 2008I wanted to write a little something about this flick. I saw this a few nights ago with my girlfriend and it was a great action movie. Tyrese G played an awesome role where he is a the father of his kidnapped boy. He would have done probably what any other normal father would have done to stop it nothing to get his son back. There were a couple of times in the movie where it was boring and drawn out. Overall i wanted to see the Game and how his acting was. Surprisingly he did a great job as a head gangster. I would recommend this movie to any one who likes action films / gang related movies and a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Go see this one.

a predictable, yet heartfelt, fast-paced, and action packed thriller
posted on 20 Aug 2008If you're looking for a film that doesn't require an overly large amount of thought, great action, and goes by fast, then 'Waist Deep' is the film for you. It is a not the typical type of film I enjoy (I like films that are psychologically powerful and wildly unpredictable such as 'Saw', 'Se7en', 'Memento', or 'Fight Club'), but I watched it twice and thought 'Waist Deep' is definitely among the more underrated films to be released recently. Another problem this film had is the fact that it came out in 2006, which thus far has been a year of extraordinary action and adventure films (see 'Pirates 2', 'Mi:III', 'Superman Returns, 'Running Scared', '16 Blocks', and 'Inside Man'). It is easy to see how 'Waist Deep' can be forgotten amongst these blockbusters. Despite this, the film is a great thrill ride that never slows down even though you'll find the film predictable. The plot is straightforward enough, following a man nicknamed O2 (Tyrese Gibson; 'Four Brothers'), a man who is trying to settle down after being recently released from prison. He is alone in life besides having his son, Junior, who means the world to him. After his cousin Lucky (Larenz Tate; 'Crash') neglects to pick Junior up from school, O2 leaves his new security guard job early to pick him up. After we see the bond that this father and his son have, O2 is carjacked by gangsters...with his son still in the car, thus setting O2 up for the ride of his life. With the reluctant help of a young woman named Coco (Meagan Good; 'Brick'), O2 vows to take his son back from the vicious gangsters, who are led by the ruthless crime lord Meat (Jayceon 'The Game' Taylor; 'The Documentary' and 'The Doctor's Advocate' rap artist).First off, what stands out is the action. Very original scenes in the film that I really enjoyed. They are intense and smart creations from Vondie Curtis Hall, who did a nice job directing this film. You really can't say enough about Tyrese Gibson, who nails the part of O2 very well. I really couldn't imagine anyone else in the role but Gibson. His biggest strength is his ability to convey emotion without speaking. Normally it is an insult to tell an actor that their best scenes were when he wasn't talking, but Gibson's nonverbal acting is simply stellar. You can relate to O2 very easily and feel his pain. He puts so much into O2, and it is easy to see in every scene, especially when he is with his son (the young actor who plays his son has the biggest eyes in the world, and he is so lovable as well). Meagan Good surprised me with her ability in 'Brick', and I was looking forward to seeing her again...sadly, she's not as good as she was in that film. She is a great young actress, but she doesn't get the job done here. Coco as a character is not very likable, and it doesn't take a genius to figure out that she is supposed to be likable. She has her moments, especially at the end of the film, but overall, it's just a mediocre at best performance. One intriguing part about this film is to watch one of the better rappers of today, Jayceon 'The Game' Taylor, venture into film for the first time. I must say, Taylor picked a good role to start with. While Meat does not appear that often, you'll remember every second of him because Taylor is great as the villain of the film. Like Gibson, Taylor is great at conveying emotion to the audience without speaking. When you see him, you will know he means business. I really enjoyed watching The Game in this film, and I hope he does another role like this. Larenz Tate is the final main character of the film, but if you want to see what his character is like, just watch 'Crash', because it's basically the same performance. Good, but I liked it the first time I saw it.Vondie Curtis Hall, the director, seemed to put a lot of emotion into this film, but forgot to keep at least SOME mystery in the film. Where the story gets annoyingly predictable, Hall throws in a great action sequence to deter you from that unfortunate fact. Despite the fact that this film is rated R, it is a very light R, due only to intense action and occasionally use of the 'f' and 'n' words. I say it's okay for ages 13 and up, maybe 12. Tyrese Gibson stands out in a film that is constantly degraded for being predictable. But guess what? This isn't 'The Usual Suspects'. This isn't 'The Prestige'. This isn't 'Se7en'. It's 'Waist Deep', a great action thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat for the 90 minutes that it runs. Take it for what it is, sit back, and enjoy the ride.7/10 --spy
Hot.......Thriller
posted on 20 Aug 2008After picking his son up from school, Tyrese aka O2 is distracted by a beautiful woman crossing the street. The next thing he knows he's being carjacked and the robbers are speeding away--unaware that his son is in the back seat. After enlisting the help of the woman who distracted him (Meagan Good in the role of hooker with a heart of gold, O2 learns that his son is being held captive by a ruthless gang leader who wants $100,000 in exchange for the boy. Tyrese had a strong love for his son and would do anything to keep that promise. It was a great action movie and kept me on the edge of my seat. Also, Meagan Good was a strong supporting actress and had great chemistry with Tyrese. They were a perfect match in the thriller. It had a great ending. This would be a great movie to add to your collection.
So Good
posted on 18 Aug 2008This is a real cool movie, take it from me i don't think another rapper comes close to acting good then The Game in this movie. I mean Ice Cube is good but The Game out done himself this time. Tyrese has a good role in this movie and story plot is good but not really "NEW". Same old story line but with a great new twist. Laurenz Tate is also a very good actor but not as well as his other movies like Menace II Society. The Game has really put a new prospection to the gangster genre by adding himself to this great film and bringing reality to the T.V You have to pay respect where respect is due and it is surely due here and with all the casting actors in this film specially Compton Rapper The Game.
I enjoyed it
posted on 05 Jul 2008I love movies about the ghetto and this one I enjoyed. The movie is about Tyrese Gibson whose son was kidnap by The Game. He meets Megan Good who tries to help him get back his son. Yes we have seen movies like this before but it still was a very good flick. I am not a big fan of Tyrese's movie example, Baby Boy which was awful. This movie has some funny parts, its a great drama, and it was very good. Also Larenz Tate is in this movie who plays Tyrese cousins gives a pretty good performance but not as good as he did in Crash.Check it out8 out of 10 stars
Better than Get Rich or Die Trying, but not by Much.
posted on 11 Jun 2008This movie is like a mixture of menace II Society, Bonnie & Clyde, Man on Fire and others, although it does have some certain flaws, but the rest of decent, with tyrese & meagan good deliver nice performances and the game making the best urban movie villain since The Man from Boyz n The Hood, the production's decent, the camera-work is nicer than expectedThe Movie is about a man who's released from prison and gets reunited with his son, then his son gets kidnapped and the only way to save him is rob banks and kill the man (The Game), when we reviewed last year of the dreadful get rich or die trying, it's hard to make a good urban gangsta movie, because gangsta movies aren't interesting movies, there's a flawed plot and few clichés Director Vondie Curtis Hall who recently recovered from that disastrous glitter, explains more differently in this one Waist deep is much more entertaining than Get Rich or Die Trying, but I'm not gonna quite recommended, so thumbs down for me.
Tyrese at his best!
posted on 22 May 2008Waist Deep is Tyrese's best movie to date. The movies that he star in seem to always center around South Central Los Angeles. That's good, because that's where he's from. He's from the streets, and this is a street movie and a good one. This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. It forces the viewer to wonder what other measures will Tyrese and Meagon Good take to get his son back. Sort of a black Bonnie & Clyde. Good action! The only major drawback is Lucky, the character played by Larenz Tate. I wanted to see more of O-Dog, a character he played in Menace II Society. It was a great story with a happy ending. Tyrese and Meagon fit together well.
Predictable Action Flick!!!
posted on 14 May 2008The main attraction of this movie is the chemistry between Meagan Good and Tyrese Gibson. These two look good together and played off each other very well. Little else can be said about the other characters who are all one-dimensional. Especially, my boy Larenz Tate whose considerable acting talents are wasted in the marginal role of "Lucky. "I don't like the Game's rapping skills and like his acting skills even less. Some musical artists should never cross over into the acting arena and he is one of them. The movie lacked a believable plot and borrowed from better 'hood' movies, most notably "Boys N' The Hood" and "Set It Off." One thing, Vondie Curtis Hall and Tyrese both stated in press interviews is how they wanted to show the love a black father has for his child and they did that. The resulting movie isn't a good movie, but they managed to get their point across. A lot of mindless action and an overdrawn car chase are the standouts of this movie, which lends itself quite well to the action genre. The ending is beyond implausible; however, I guess Mr. Hall lost to the studio execs who probably forced him to film this ending to appease audiences. Expect a standard Hollywood formulaic ending, just don't say I didn't warn you.

Good movie
posted on 25 Aug 2009This movie is not perfect, but it was a good one. Will it win any? Awards no, but it will end up in many DVD collections. I like this movie because it had a simple plot, and was very entertaining. When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I thought it was going to be another Boyz In The Hood, or New Jackcity, but it wasn't. This movie had a little bit of everything; for example love, drama, comedy, and suspense. I was really shocked that this was not a typical sex, sex, sex movie. As always Tyrese, and Megan Good had great performances. The Game actually did a good job as well. Although this movie was somewhat predictable, I would not mind watching it over and over again for years to come.
