Every dream has a price.
Bud Fox is an ambitious stock trader who will do just about anything to get into the big leagues. He has been actively courting Gordon Gekko, one of the biggest stock speculators on Wall Street. Gekko manipulates the market using inside information and his motto best describes his approach: greed is good. Nothing will stop him from pursuing a good deal and he takes advantage of Bud's burning to desire to succeed. Soon, Bud finds himself getting information from any source and using to gain an advantage. It all comes to a head however when Gekko targets Blue Star airlines, the company where Bud's father has worked for 24 years, secretly planning to break it up and plunder the employees' retirement fund.

WALL STREET POWER ON DVD. WHERE IS IT?
posted on 31 Aug 2009I want to first say that this is one of my favorite movies. This movie is about greed, deception, power, money,it shows that man will pretty much do anything to get to the top. It does'nt get much better than this. Michael Douglas won a most rewarding oscar for the excellent performance he put on. I am just getting very frustrated with the fact that this is still not available on dvd yet. Please get this out soon! Thanks.
Enjoyable Story of the 80's Wall Street Success Myth
posted on 31 Aug 2009This film was quite fun to watch and I enjoyed it. Douglass and Sheen gave excellent performances, and Gordon Gekko had some classic lines(My personal favorite: A fool and his money are lucky enough to get together in the first place).
However, as much as I'd recommend this film for it's entertainment value, as a professional trader who has been making his living from trading stocks and commodities for his own personal account for the past twelve years, I have to say that this film does more to perpetuate every myth and psychological bias that causes the majority of people to LOSE money in the markets than just about any other film I can think of. Chief among them in this film is that inside information is required or even desirable in many cases in order to make money. This may just be a reflection of the biases of it's director, but IMO, a bit more in depth research and the inclusion of another character, for contrast's sake, of a successful, honest trader and his or her methods would not have gone amiss. I kept hoping this would develop in the character of Lou Manheim, but it never did. Bottom line: Very entertaining story, but it ain't no success manual. More like a study of what not to do to win on Wall Street.
Capitalism at its Finest
posted on 31 Aug 2009Absolutely fantastic. All you folks in the finance industry out there - watch this movie three times a day, everyday, after meals. Adam Smith ("The Wealth of Nations", ISBN:0879757051, buy it here ! ) would've taken the trouble to rise from his grave to watch this one.
Douglas was excellent and deserved his Oscar, and Sheen (both dad and son) were terrific. I'm not a great fan of Oliver Stone's other movies, but this is one movie I treasure as much as my MSFT stock certificate !
The quotes from the dialogue should be printed in bold and stuck up on the wall of every investment bank's office:
"It's all about bucks kid. The rest is conversation".
"See this building over here ... it was my first real estate deal ...I made over $900,000. At the time I thought it was all the money in the world - now it's a day's pay".
Surprised it didn't win the Oscar for best screenplay as well.
Greed is good
posted on 31 Aug 2009This is a great character study. This is a great movie. After reading the "bad" reviews, I can only agree with one; Daryl Hannah's acting is pretty poor. Olive Stone has always been criticized for his inability to handle a woman on the screen, and thi is further testament to that. But to say Michael Douglas was terrible? Come on, they dont give out Oscars for bad performances. And so what if this character seemed to be the basis for every character he would play. This was the first. And most great actors play a lot of similar roles. Dustin Hoffman - was there really a difference in rainman and the graduate? And Oliver Stone as the Ed Wood of the 90's? Come on. Carol Reed of the 90's maybe. Good thing that guy saw Tim Burrton's movie.
But dont take my word for it either. Watch it yourself, igt certainly deserves a gander.
Pure Inspiration For Succeess - A True Classic!
posted on 31 Aug 2009I have seen this movie over one hundred times and each time I watch it, it gets even better. This movie will inspire you to go after whatever it is that you want out of life - love, wealth, power, or whatever - with a vengeance! It's about being 'poor, smart, and hungry' and 'winning a few, losing a few, but you keep on fighting'. No 'Ivy League schmucks' wanted here! It's about starting out with nothing and fighting and scratching your way to the top - despite outside obstacles and the elitists trying to keep you out. Rugged American capitalism - work hard, work smart - and be richly and justly rewarded. Our free market is what has made our country #1 and the envy of the entire world. In America, anyone can succeed! I know it's only a movie, but it contains so many real world lessons. This movie is a true classic which captured an entire era - the 80's. Great lines, great scenes, this is my favorite movie of all time!
PLEASE E-mail FOXMOVIES@FOX.COM and demand that they put this movie out on DVD immediately!
a true time period classic
posted on 31 Aug 2009this film best represents the mid to late 80's with the me i am the world and i'll do anything for $.very powerful and ruthless.but in the end character counts for something.the film helps you understand michael milkens, donald trumps etc.. world a little bit.
fascinating look at american greed
posted on 31 Aug 2009Interesting, the finance types that watch this film and see it as some sort of self-help guide about how to make it in the corporate world. Some of the positive reviews here sound as if written by starry-eyed finance undergrads or junior Bud Foxes... Daryl Hannah's acting is paper thin, and Michael Douglas gives us a preview of the character he will play in largely every film he's done since "Wall Street." The film itself is often silly, but still remarkable prescient about Information and Technology, which is financing another boom similar to the one portrayed in the film.
Watch this movie only to see how far we have progressed as a society since the 80's....???
Why Only 5 Stars
posted on 31 Aug 2009"(Greed) cuts through and captures the essence of the evolotionary spirit..." A powerful film on the transforming power of money and power. A look into the moral struggles of one who can have it all but gives it up. A Tour De Force...meant to be quotable...catches you up in the momentum of being bad...slaps you on the wrist..then drops you back on the side of right. MY FAVORITE FILM OF ALL TIME on so many levels. Let's face it Greed causes innovation...development...research...all to make a better widget...profits...mankind benefits...like it or not Greed is good..such a moral conundrum!
Its good. Dam* good.
posted on 31 Aug 2009My favorite all time movie. And the funny thing is I don't even regard Charlie Sheen a good actor. Even in this movie Sheen is not the best actor in the world, but is the best actor for the part. I mean if you can get a 5 star movie not even using a good actor a pretty good accomplishment has been made. Honestly Douglas does 99 percent of the work here and carries Sheen on his back. Sheen was like blind with out a cane, lucky he and this part found each other. I tell you if it does not make you want to rush out and buy as much stock as you can, you need to watch the movie again because you were eating too much popcorn and not watching the movie. Of course that wont happen because this movie is so good that it will mesmerize you and glue your eyes to the screen. Its good, Dam* good.
Greed has never been better!
posted on 31 Aug 2009Greed is good! We all agree but few are willing to say so. This movie manages to make greed a 'cool' thing. Perfect cast: Douglas is unbelievable. Great quotes. The only shortcomings: the end - typical Hollywood!
Special mention should be made of Martin Sheen. Great performance. His character balanced Gekko's excesses well.
This movie also showed Charlie Sheens potential as am actor which he sadly has not been able to repeat.
Douglas' Oscar was truly deserving. And the directing was perfect.
A superb movie that is relevant today - just look at the record performance of the Dow Jones. And the financiers today are even more wealthy: eg Soros.

A Laugh Riot!!! The Most Hilarious Film of the 80s!!!!!
posted on 31 Aug 2009Truly, one of the most hilarious movies ever made. The fact that it is intended to be a serious character study of greed's effects on a young man makes the hilarity even more intense. Oliver Stone is the Ed Wood of the 80s-90s!!! Watch Daryl Hannah pretend to know something about art!! Watch Charlie Sheen pretend to know something about acting!! Watch Martin Sheen realize what a bozo his son is!!! Watch Michael Douglas grease his hair, and win an Oscar for it!!! Listen to Oliver Stone's deathless dialogue!!! Not since Plan Nine from Outer Space has a script plumbed such inanities with such utter solemnity. A true classic, with Valley of the Dolls, and Showgirls.
