War is just WAR!!!
posted on 21 Aug 2009War is a movie about War. There is no more that somebody can say. Jet Li and Statham meet on the big screen to prove they are still action heroes.War suffers from weak plot line and confusing characters. But thats what I expected. Before I went to cinema I read couple of reviews about this movie and was surprised. Many people expected, or it feels like they were expecting, a movie whit twisting plot, color full characters and many more..I don't understand that..THIS IS A MOVIE ABOUT KILLING AND ACTION!!!!THIS IS WAR. What more can you expect?? Watch this movie as a action movie, don't ask what just happened, just enjoy the action!
War is Raw meat
posted on 19 Aug 2009I intended to watch this film on the cinema but I never got the chance so I rented it when it came out on DVD. I was extremely glad that I didn't see it on the big screen because this is simply one of the worst movies I've ever seen. A good action film either has a good story-line or a decent amount of action but War had neither. Other than that it was far from entertaining and beyond boring. It was so boring that I had a sore head & I felt like ripping my arm out and constantly bash my head with it. The action was not very creative and the twist in the end was so predictable that you didn't even have to be of average intelligence and I knew it about 10 minutes after the movie started. A moron could even come up with a better story-line than stupid War. Overall entertainment is the primary step of films which War failed to do. It has more plot holes than a sieve and watching three hours of your washing machine spin would be more rewarding than this!
Decent storyline, some cool scenes, but its no War...
posted on 19 Aug 2009I did like this movie, the storyline and the surprises in the film are pretty good. but it in no way was a war between Statham and Li they chase each other through the movie and fight once at the end for like 30 seconds. i thought going into this it was going to be a free for all action fest, there is a lot of action in the movie but there's no real fighting they'll be like 2 punches and kicks and Li will kill the guy quick or Statham will.there's no good decent fight scenes if you know what i mean and that was what i was expected. a lot of people get shot quick too there's no prolonged shooting scene at all just quick shoot twice hes dead sort of fighting. so i was disappointed a lot by that and don't even get me started on the ending it was just horrible. it ends so quick and you don't know if Statham is dead or not you just see Li driving off in a nice car on a bridge and thats it. but it did have a good story and decent action with good blood so all in all i gave it a 7 out of 10 and i must say i would have liked this more if i diddent think i was going to see a Statham, Li free for all which sadly i diddent get but it is an alright watch otherwise, mind the ending of course...
"War"--The title gives it away
posted on 19 Aug 2009If you walk into a movie theater showing "War" and expect to be dazzled by some thought-provoking paragon of acting destined to change the way the world thinks about film and culture, you're either an idiot or an idealist. It's called "War" because that's what it is, a bullet festival with some sideshow martial arts."War" was designed only to be a brutal, dazzling death picture, and it delivers handsomely. There's scarcely 10 minutes at a stretch that lacks any appreciable action sequences, and the end result leaves more dead Asians than WWII. There are some truly insane displays of gunplay and a handful of inventive deaths (my favorites include a hubcap to the skull). Jason Statham delivers a pretty good performance, considering that this is really designed for pure blood-and-guts glory, and Jet Li is as impressive now as he was in "Romeo Must Die" and "Kiss of the Dragon" (thank GOD he hasn't retired). The plot's also not as simplistic as it needs to be, and it includes several plot twists (yet it never quite seems too convoluted, thankfully). If you want to see War, be ready for it. Know that you'll go in looking for a mountain of bodies, and you'll get precisely what you ask for. My only real complaint is the relatively abrupt ending-- after the many and close-together action sequences, it downshifts pretty quickly, and leaves you wishing there was still a half hour left.
It's Mayhem, Pure-And-Simple
posted on 15 Aug 2009Hey, if you're interested in seeing a mostly-violent flick with a big body count, gratuitous in nature half the time, and a lot of hostility, anger, betrayal, a big twist near the end and tons of testosterone, then this movie is for you. If you want a quiet, low-key thriller, skip this one: this is somewhat brainless blood-and-guts, slice 'n dice. In other words: know what you're going to get here.We get many, many gunshots to head., long range to up-close-and personal, swords into mouths and through back of head and through just about any other body part, a car chase, motorcycle chases, a few bare breasts and a bunch of attention-grabbing scenes of brutality, which definitely outnumber the quieter scenes.Jason Statham seems to be the new macho man of the day, playing this kind of role in numerous films the past few years. Jet Li.....well, you know him. Statham versus Li? Yes, but not really. The two are only in the same scene twice, once for a couple of minutes of Jason giving threats and Jet standing there passively, and then in the finale fight scene. The latter, unlike most of these action films of today, is not overdone and go on and on. It's just about the right length. The best part of this ultra-violent movie dealing with rival Asian gangs and FBI agent (s) in the middle in the BIG twist near the end of the film. At least it makes this a little more than a brainless action movie. I think it's kind of cool, although don't try to analyze it for credibility. While a number of reviewers here weren't happy that the two big stars weren't on the screen at the same time for long, my choice for under-played actor is Luis Guzman, who is always very interesting but didn't have many lines here. I'd like to have seen his part a lot bigger, and I would have liked to see Statham tone it tone and sound a little more intelligent in his role. In real life, FBI agents have a lot more class.Having said that, I still enjoyed the film because I knew in advance what it was, that it wasn't Li's best effort nor Statham's but it sufficed for a 100-minute diversion. I was looking for action...and I got it! I also recommend this for those who have HDTV and a Blu-Ray disc player. This is a very slick-looking film on Blu-Ray.Just don't bring the kiddies or grandma into the living room to watch this!
Kungfu Infernal Affairs and Crazy 88
posted on 15 Aug 2009It looked like a "put big star A with big star B and a fight scene at the end and we make $$$" type of film. I have to admit after watching it last night it was actually pretty darn good as a Hong Kong action movie.Let me explain. There was only one fight scene between Jet Li and Jason Statham. It wasn't very good, and it happened in the last five minutes of the movie. I think I'll watch "The One" again just to see a good fight sequence between these two. Most fight scenes were reminiscent of the Crazy 88's fight scene in Kill Bill Vol. 1, where many goons died in horribly bloody ways. Actually, with all the broken limbs, it had a bit of classic Steven Seagal in there too. When it all got too over-the-top, I actually started laughing. The fight scene to watch for is a sword battle that Jet Li has in the climax of the film (NOT with Jason Statham!). Freakin' beautiful. There was a whole lot of talking in this movie. As it turns out, that's because there was a very deep, involved plot. Every action of Jet Li's character, "Rogue", has an obvious meaning. If you watch carefully, you'll find that they all have a deeper significance as well. There are suspected plot holes, character outline flaws and storyline twists that eventually work out to be red herrings in advance of a great finish to the story. There's no "OMG Ah HA!" moment, but definitely an "oooOOOOOooooh! Now I get it!" and everything falls into place. In fact, looking back on the film, it really doesn't feel like a Hollywood film at all. It is in almost every way a Hong Kong film. If you watch Infernal Affairs (precursor to Scorsese's Oscar winning The Departed), or any other grey-market DVD you can get your hands on you'll see where WAR gets its influence. The similarities between WAR and HK action flicks are many: Cool twist ending, Triads, Yakuza, dishonour = decapitation, motorcycles, and Jet Li as a hired assassin. I wanted to giggle every time he said "I have no master". It's like his version of "I'll be back".In conclusion, if you like HK action movies, go see WAR. Aside from the illogical scenes of Chinese ex-pats speaking English to each other with great difficulty, it will look exactly like a HK movie (right down to the Filmed In Vancouver credits). If you're not really familiar with the genre, then it probably won't be the kind of movie you'll enjoy unless you like creative and very, very bloody battles involving simultaneous use of swords and gunplay in which case you should probably see a psychiatrist.
Good for a laugh in 10 years
posted on 13 Aug 2009I knew exactly what to expect of a Jet Li-Jason Statham flick--lots of kick-ass action, fires, and chase scenes. But what I got was a flick so full of plot holes and terrible acting that it made even the most interesting fight sequences look silly. Clichés from all aspects of the action genre show up here (the main character is an FBI agent named John), and they wouldn't be so bad, save for the absolutely atrocious acting, even from people who should know better.Without going too far into spoiler territory, I'll point out that even the plot twists are painfully obvious, even when they make absolutely no sense. Some of the choicer "surprises" are so poorly explained (worse than any Law and Order episode), that they'll leave you scratching your head even after you leave the theater.Save yourself the money and wait 10 years. It'll be in the bargain bin and you can have a good laugh at how terrible it was.
When twists are unnecessary
posted on 07 Aug 2009I'm a longtime fan of Jason Statham, and I like virtually every movie he's been in. From "Snatch", "Lock, Stock", and even the failures, "Mean Machine", "Revolver" and "London". His most recent roles make me question how serious he is about acting though. How many more "trying to quit cigs" coppers he must play before starring in an actually good movie? This is without doubt his worst movie yet, and I've even seen the dreadful "Chaos" (I haven't seen Uwe Boll's Dungeon Siege though). It's not that it's bad, I was actually entertained for the most part, and the initial plot is intriguing. Who is The Rogue? What are his motives? All is well until the last few moments, in which the plot is explained in a VERY uncomfortable and honestly, downright insulting series of twists. It's clear that they thought of the ending as a last minute gizmo to make a plot twist and surprise the audience. It sucked, in the same way that Denzel Washington's "Deja Vu" twists sucked. It ruined the movie for me.If you don't like Jet Li or Statham, stay away from this. And even if you do, make sure your expectations are really low.4/10
Movie premier
posted on 30 Jul 2009Tonight I went to see this movie at the World Premier in Corbin, Kentucky(birth place to Lee Anthony Smith). And as an extra bonus Mr. Smith himself came and watched the movie with us, very entertaining. It was a really good movie for the most part it was an edge of the seat kind of movie there were not very many down parts at all. There are several twists and turns that will leave even the movie fan waiting to see what is going to happen next.I wont ruin the end of the movie on here because it should at least wait to be ruined after the movie comes out on Friday. If you like a good action movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat and some unexpected plot twists that i haven't seen the likes of since The Sixth Sense this would be a good movie for you to go see. However there is nudity so its not recommended for the young movie goers. Anyone over 13 should be fine however.
Where's my money?
posted on 28 Jul 2009Its gone forever...as is my time. This movie has great gunfights and some good fighting sequences but, overall the fighting didn't overcome the bad acting, the illegitimate characters, no martial arts, the twisty storyline, and the confusing transitions. The movie stretches on for what seems like hours and brings characters in and out as it steam rolls its way through the plot(steamrollers are slow). So I'd wait and save my money, or at least 7 bucks and wait two months for it to come out on DVD. There at least you can skip the scenes. If you go to see Jet Li you won't be disappointed. He is great. But if you go to see his counterpart. Then you will be disappointed. His character is misused and not used enough. If you do pay the 8 dollars for the movie ticket then go into the theaters expecting a long, and action packed, plot less, gunfight of a movie. Then you will not be disappointed. I was.
pretty pictures, no story
posted on 24 Jul 2009This movie I just have to comment on, simply because it left me with such mixed feelings.First of all, it seemed really well done on a first glance. There were flashy cars, nice outfits, good cinematography. I don't particularly recall the soundtrack, but I guess that's a good point. On the downside, the movie lacked a lot in story and character development. Alright, so it's an action movie, but for the first 95% of it you couldn't care less about where the story is going. The reason for that is that the characters never seem very likable. The main hero (Jason Stratham's character) is just out for revenge and treats his wife and kid bad because of that. While that's just one more reason to dislike the one character you're supposed to identify with, the movie never goes in-depth about it. For example, it never really shows the hero's relationship to his wife getting worse. Instead, they're just divorced all of a sudden. And while there seemed to be enough budget for nice sets and cool costumes, some of the props (especially the "horses") looked like they came straight from a toy store. Also, this movie forces you to realize that Jet Li is simply not a particularly good actor. But my biggest pet peeve about "War" was that Jason Stratham and Jet Li seem to have traded places. If I watch a movie with those two actors in it, I expect Stratham to shoot a lot of people and Jet Li to perform a couple of cool martial arts stunts. Instead, you get some fist fights with Jason Stratham (some stunt double even does a couple of kicks for him), while Jet Li resorts to mostly shooting people. Why?????I looked forward a lot to seeing this movie because I liked both leading actors. I was rather disappointed, but had a hard time disliking it despite its weaknesses. "War" is simply so pretty to watch that you're just begging for something cool to happen. And while the story seems like a sad excuse to fill the screen time with lots of dialogue, you are rewarded with a couple of nice action scenes and a good (if foreseeable) ending.
War intense revenge action thriller
posted on 22 Jul 2009"War" was pretty intense revenge-thriller similar to Chan-wook Park's Oldboy and the action was non-stop. The movie centered more around the plot than special effects or martial arts. I think there could have actually been a little more of the martial arts and special effects, it is like Corey Yuen is taking a sabbatical leave in the middle of the film and leave the scene to the director, but the plot was still good enough to hold your attention throughout. For 2 hours of entertainment, you couldn't ask for much more. It was a good movie, all in all. Li and Stratham did a good job on the acting. They are also wonderful wonderful action star, and the outwardly coolness turn them into lethal killing machine. I did like the sword fights in the end I thought they were well choreographed and rehearsed.
One thing will disappoint you, but it's not bad.
posted on 12 Jul 2009I did enjoy this movie quite a bit. There's one thing that bugs me quite a bit in this movie. The action scenes are great, the thing is, if it's a movie with Jet Li, usually you're gonna expect more martial arts fighting, not just pure gun shooting. I mean there IS some, but not a whole lot, just a couple scenes near the end have some. But the movie was alright, a bit of a difficult plot, but it's very interesting and the suspense keeps on building throughout the movie.Overall, I think it deserves 8 out of 10. It wasn't bad, so I don't know why the overall rating on here is like a 6. A little underrated to me.
Generic kung fu cop movie but with a awesome twist
posted on 06 Jul 2009I've grown somewhat detached from Kung Fu movies in the last year or so. Some of these Japanese mafia/Chinese mafia related stories feel so much alike that sometimes it feels like you're just going through the motions, I felt pretty much the same way with Rouge Assassin until the twist actually kicked in. Say what you will about the shaky-cam technique, martial arts movies in general, especially Jackie Chan's movies, are so obviously choreographed, that you no longer feel that the fighting is dangerous and it really does feel more like a dance, Jackie Chan gets off most of the times, since that's how we works taking cues from the late great Charles Chaplin and also since his movies and generally aimed at a PG and PG-13 crowd, but again, most of these types of movies feature fight scenes that feel too much like the actors are doing dance steps rather then fighting. Rouge Assassin's no different. For the most part, the story's about Jason Staham's character quest to avenge his best friend after he had been taken out by a mysterious hit-man who seems to change his allegiances between the yakuza and triad mob bosses as easily as one changes his sweater. However, no amounts of Jason Staham-related scenes(his scene where he confronts a Yakuza enforcer in Japanese is cool) can make up such for a generic kung fu movie. But the twist, which mostly likely nobody will see coming when it hits, but careful viewers will probably notice some odd stuff at some point. Believe me, it will change your entire perspective of all the characters involved in this odd conspiracy.I was also somewhat disappointed by Devon Aoki's performance, who doesn't really do much then looking a little tough, but just demanding a salad to his hench at gunpoint looked a little silly on screen. The cast was decent, we had Jet Li, once again giving his usual performance and Jason Staham, who has pretty much now cemented himself as a top Hollywood bad boy, gives once again , another of his great performances. The cast also includes some rising Asian stars, who play their part with competence(save for Devon Aoki), thought the movie seems a little too condescending enough and assume that the audience knows no difference between the Japanese mafia and the Chinese mafia. It's worth a rental, it's a generic kung fu cop movie like many others before it, but has only one thing that elevates it above everything else. And that's the said twist.
A very bad ending
posted on 24 Jun 2009A really good movie, with good action throughout the movie, except the climax fight and ending. I actually under estimated the movie, but the movie is really worth watching. But i advise you not to watch the climax fight between jet li and stathom. A bad ending could spoil the whole movie , but the movie being so good some what gets a narrow escape.A really good movie, with good action throughout the movie, except the climax fight and ending. Ending...?
posted on 16 Jun 2009I thought the movie had a very intriguing plot. It was well thought out and held the suspense to the end. Although you can realize that Jet Li is actually Jason Statham's partner the reason for why or how is left for you to ponder till the end. I thought however despite the plot the action was blurred by the constant camera motion that allowed the average person to be unable to appreciate/follow the fights. Lastly, the ending was a disappointment in my opinion. It was straight out of Brokeback Mountain and there was not a final clash between Li and Statham which I think my friends and I would have enjoyed. The movie left me thinking only about how bad the ending was rather than appreciating the plot and the movie prior to the final scene. I thought the movie was very interesting however if you are looking for an amazing action film this one leaves you wanting more.
There's nothing new under the sun...
posted on 06 Jun 2009... and that cliché is especially true of action films. That doesn't mean, however, that there are no enjoyable action films being made. "War" succeeds in being a darn good action film without ever descending into the realm of "purely insulting to the viewer" (if that's what you're after, I'd recommend the stunningly awful "Shoot 'Em Up").There are gangs, guns, chasing, mayhem, and a great deal of people hurting other people - everything you could want in an action film. Statham and Li are, as always, delightful. The action scenes are well put together and recall the time before gratuitous wire stunts and MTV-brand "shakey-cam". All in all, "War" is an excellent way to enjoy a standard action film premise in a new way.
war ends with wastage of stars and money
posted on 31 May 2009I watched the movie with great expectations by having two great action heroes but they have not fulfilled the expectations. the editing of the movie is superb. But the action seqences are somewhat like attached to a movie in unwanted places.Jason statham was wasted in this movie and Jetli's action seqences are not enjoyable in this movie.some nudity is wantedly inserted in this movie as a commercial aspect. But it doesn't work, instead it is just a speed break to movie. I think there are many speed breakers in this movie. The dialogue that was spoken by Jetli "I Have No Master" is good while hearing from Jetli's mouth. The sword fight is incredibly superb. The first chasing sequence of Jason statham behind Jetli was brilliant. The Seasing of Jetli's warehouse was a brilliant scene. When Jason statham opens the door of the Jetli's warehouse, Jetli stands right there without any hesitation was really superb
testicles not included...
posted on 31 May 2009There are a lot of postings about this being a "guy" movie, or needing a "pair of testicles" to enjoy it. Let me tell you about this film from a woman's point of view. I loved it! It rocked. I am older than the usual crowd for this film, at 35. I went on a Friday night, at the 10:20 show, and the theater was dead as can be! I was thrilled! I had a great view of some amazing car chases, great motorcycle stunts, and hot guys fighting - what could be better? The acting was good, for this genre, but if you are looking for Oscar nods, look elsewhere. If you like a good kick butt film - this one is for you - no matter what is between your legs. There was a lot of T&A, but that is par for the course for this type. In fact, my date thought it was too complicated for him....Seriously - if you like action and real stunts - not the CG stuff, this one's for you.

A waste of time.
posted on 25 Aug 2009It's rare that I regret wasting a sheet of paper for taking notes while writing a film review. This is one of those rare moments. But the film War, starring Jason Statham and Jet Li pulls out all the stops in an attempt to waste one's time and money. The premise of the story wasn't terrible. A detective's partner is killed by a rogue assassin. Three years later, the assassin returns and the detective, who's wanted revenge all this time, can't touch him because of pressure from his own department due to an ongoing case involving the assassin's new employer. Apparently the premise of the film was as far as they got. Not only does this film not deliver, it has all the elements that really try your patience a la 2 fast 2 furious. Bad dialogue, bad acting, poorly choreographed action sequences, the list goes on.From the beginning of the film, we are thrown into the middle of an investigation gone sour with Jason Statham and his partner, played by John Lone. It's because of this that we never really care about what happens to Lone or his family. As someone watching the film, nothing made me want to watch Statham or Lone or to see where their police work took them. I've always said you can't just tell the audience something, you have to show them. We're told here that these two men are best friends and it just doesn't hold one's attention. It was made even more unbearable by the fact that Statham and Lone don't seem to have any sort of chemistry which would make us think they have a history. As the assassin (Li) comes back a few years later, there's an attempt to throw the story into the middle of two warring families, one Chinese and the other, Japanese. Li works for the Chinese mob boss who wants revenge on the Japanese family over some golden statues he stole from them decades ago. Li does a good job of stirring things up between the two families and the whole time, we are left wondering why. Eventually they rip each other apart, and we find out Li was after the Japanese boss all along. Then, without warning, Jason Statham manages to squeeze himself back into the picture, and finally, he and Li go to war. The only problem is they don't really go to war. The film was marketed as the showdown between one of the most electrifying action stars today against one of the greatest martial artists ever; feel free to pick who's who because I certainly can't tell. The final fight between the two is less than 2 minutes and truth be told, it wasn't even that good. When nothing in the movie works, the pacing usually doesn't matter either. Nonetheless, it moves along at a moderate pace (not fast enough if you're someone who didn't like it) and eventually, we find out the truth about the assassin, and Statham. Final word, over the top action films with little or no plot or acting talent usually end up in the five dollar bin at Wal-Mart. Let's hope Statham and Li aren't reduced to such.
