The legendary high jacker is actually Dan Cooper. DB Cooper is the name of the man arrested shortly after the real high jacker jumped from the plane but was quickly cleared by the authorities. Unfortunately, the newspapers picked up DB Cooper's name instead of Dan Cooper and the name stuck.

total guy movie
posted on 17 Aug 2009Total guy movie... it wasn't hilarious every second but i don't think it was supposed to be. 3 guys grow up together and then grow together on a long trip through the mountains. What they encounter and how they deal with it is what this is all about.Burt Reynolds has a small but not insignificant part and plays it out well.Something I noticed is that our culture is being exposed more and more the older it gets. The guys celebrate things that they were raised with and I'm sure will bring back any older "guy" to his past. And it wasn't "chick-ified"! 8/10.
Coolest movie ever
posted on 17 Aug 2009I thought this movie wasn't only a knee slappin comedy but it was also good cause it had a moral "Love your life and live it everyday" I thought this was a great buddy comedy and it was funny throughout the whole thing. You should also see it for it's great actors (Seth Green, Mathew Lillard, Dax Shepard) This film may not be as amusing as you hoped cause it is very similar to the diliverance. But none the less its funny Now for those of you who have seen it (remember the part where Tom came in on his motorcycle and asked "Where did you guys park?") "hahahahahaha",sigh, I also thought it's choice of actors were perfect paranoid Dan (Seth Green), Leader smart guy (Mathew Lillard), Tough guy/slacker (Dax Shepard.) Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. (Cant wait till it comes out on DVD!!)
A memorable ride through Oregon
posted on 05 Aug 2009Steven Brill (Mr. Deeds) has directed a memorable homage to old classics through a goofy comedy where the characters have depth and every performance is powerful and hilarious. Three childhood friends reunite when the death of the fourth friend brings them all to Oregon. When they realize that he was on the trail of $200,000 left by D.B Cooper, a reckless plane hijacker, in the early 1970's. Jerry (Matthew Lillard) takes charge and decides that he, Tom (Dax Shepard) & Dan (Seth Green) should search for the treasure in the depths of the wilderness. The trio pack up and depart on a journey they (and you) will never forget. Best described as a mix between the Scary Movie series (film references), Dude, Where's My Car? (The outrageous circumstances) and a film released a year after Without A Paddle, Elizabthtown (with the characters spiritual journeys). Matthew Lillard impresses as a leading man with Green and Shepard playing all the cards as supporting actors. A cameo from Burt Reynolds, a hilarious run through a burning pot farm and a huge fall from a ATV/Quadbike are just a few of the highlights. Plus, if you come from NZ (like myself) you can spot where some of the scenes were shot. Verdict: A memorable movie that isn't hard on the brain!
Anti-Deliverance movie (not remake!)
posted on 14 Jul 2009Got a big kick out of this movie. I was expecting less due to the advertising on TV which made it seemed really lowbrow. Seth Green, as usual, created his character and made it unique. I have liked him in every role I have seen him in. I foresee a great future for this young man. He takes the script, creates a likable character and has great screen presence. I would call this a "Buddy/road movie." Of course, we all the see the resemblance to the classic "Deliverance." Yet this is a youthful, funny, fresh approach to the original. While Deliverance had a dark, sexy undertone, this is just a plain ole' simple movie, gives you a fun evening watching it, and a ton of laughs. I enjoyed Burt Reynolds role, I anticipated more of a cameo, so was pleased to see him with a bit of dialogue. The strange makeup they made him wear was jarring, I don't see why they did it. It resembled some leftover Klingon mask, and why all the rubbery redness to it? It was like his character was sunburned.
Funny movie
posted on 06 Jun 2009This was such a funny movie, I really enjoyed it. I'm not saying it's Oscar material but who needs those kinds of movies all the time? This was great entertainment for a relaxing evening. It was also surprisingly thoughtful with a good message... Money doesn't buy happiness. Happiness in life comes from family and friends, and from within. Don't keep putting stuff off because you're busy, do things with your family and friends now - tomorrow is uncertain. It was amusing to see Seth Green as a nerdy little doctor. The scene with him and the bear was absolutely hilarious! And the (human waste) bombs... that was gross and yet amusing at the same time...The bad parts... the red neck goons chasing them through the woods - that's a stereotype that I've seen enough of. And what has become of Burt Reynolds career that he has to make cameos like this... I love this movie and will buy a copy, but I think it's a sad commentary on what has happened with Burt to see him here playing a hermit.Overall, I definitely recommend the movie. It was funny and light hearted, and something I would let my young nieces watch with me.
Very funny but has some problems
posted on 31 May 2009This is NOT Academy Award material by any stretch of the imagination but is hilariously funny. Sure, most of the bits are high school or younger level humor but overall you gotta laugh at these guys. Every guy can relate to these three friends. We either WERE just like them or knew someone just like them. Ist is a light-hearted Deliverance or just a lighthearted romp in the woods? I say the latter and trying to place it in the former is ridiculous. Take it for what it is - a silly, light-hearted look at 3 life-long buddies trying to recapture what they had as kids. Don't try to put in the same class as any great "film", it is not. Its a "flick", a fun, entertaining, kick in the funny bone. There are problems with this movie but watch it for what it is and what it was meant to be - entertainment. I give it a 6 overall just because I haven't had a good laugh in a long time. That's my two cents - where's yours?
Not worth the money
posted on 27 May 2009Hello my friendsA friend of mine and me have just watched this movie... After 10 minutes have passed, we noticed that 6 of 6 jokes were not funny at all.. So we decided to drink some well tasty German beer in order to make us enjoy this crap! That didn't work out as well... We finally came to the conclusion that it isn't worth paying 3 for a DVD, we've hardly seen.. After an hour of yawning, counting sheeps and snoring in the end, we realized that it wasn't worth the trouble! We hope we could have help you with your decision!Thomas and Jan from Germany :P
Stupidity rides the river. I
posted on 19 May 2009Its more like up a s^*t creek without a paddle. Dumb, dumb, dumb. After the funeral of a friend, three "city boys" decide to honor a childhood promise and take a trip on river in Oregon. This little camping expedition will enable them to search for the lost D.B. Cooper loot. The will some how survive outrageous encounters with animals and wild, woodsy mountain men. The three will end up close to naked when befriended by a woodsy hermit played by Burt Reynolds. Plenty of sexual reference and crude humor. The scenery is more impressive than the cast that includes: Matthew Lillard, Seth Green, Dax Shepard, Nadine Bernecker and Bonnie Somerville.
Very...very...very...funny!!!
posted on 17 May 2009I loved this film when I first saw it. It has a great cast, and I just kept on laughing and laughing. I was in the mood for something funny after seeing Open Water. (That movie was good, but I felt depressed after watching it...) Anyway, the film has some very good laughs, and it never fails, in delivering some of the funniest joke and quotes ever...but if you don't get the humor, then you really shouldn't see the film. A lot of the humor is straight-up toilet humor, and to those who despise these type of movies, then if you watch it, you might have to do a lot of rewinding on the tape, or DVD, if you don't understand their dialog. Basically, three friends go to a tree house after the death of another childhood friend, and they find a treasure map that their friend has left for them. Being the adventurous type, the friends set out, despite the protests of another, who is phobic and always talking about his degrees of responsibility. He goes anyway, and they set out on this daring quest. But everything that can go wrong, does go wrong, (as said on in the reviews) when they are attacked by vicious wild animals and a troop of hillbillies. But you'll love their crazy antics as they try to find a way out of their predicament. A very funny comedy, Without A Paddle is a fun film to watch, but if you don't understand the humor, then this one will be winding up down the drain in your mind. With Matthew Lillard, Seth Green, Dax Shepherd, and Rachel Blanchard
I thought the movie was great!
posted on 11 May 2009I thought the movie was great because it was hilarious. I would watch this movie a few times a month because it's this good, well at least to me. I hope they get awards for this movie because i would love to vote for them. The 3 main characters were very funny thats what made this movie so great. I would buy it but i already have it! My favorite character would have to be Jerry because he was funny through the whole movie, well so were the other 2 but Jerry is my favorite character. I think that they should make a second movie of this since it was hilarious and have the same actors. The actors must have had a lot of fun making this movie since i thought it was hilarious, well a lot of people probably thought this movie was hilarious too. I really really hope they make a second Without a Paddle and that it will be 2 times the hilarious than the first one!
A Surprisingly Good Movie
posted on 09 May 2009I must admit I rented this movie because it featured "Little" Bart - Doug Seus' grizzly bear. I support Doug's work with grizzly bears and his work to save grizzly habitat through his Vital Ground foundation. In that respect the movie was a little disappointing as Bart was on camera longer in the production featurette in the special features section of the DVD than he was in the movie. However, I was pleasantly surprised when the movie was pretty good.It isn't "high art", but from a pure entertainment stand point, it was great. The comedy is mostly slapstick. The settings are gorgeous, (I wish Oregon looked that good when I lived there). The characters improbable caricatures of common stereotypes. The story highly unlikely. Made by MTV, as one would expect, it is, basically, an excuse to make jokes about sex, drugs, rock'n'roll, the seventies and feminine hygiene, (for some reason, they seem to have left out flatulence jokes). Surprisingly, though, it works, on a certain level.
Surprisingly Hilarious.
posted on 25 Apr 2009I was looking forward to seeing this film from watching the previews, I thought it looked funny. I never expected what I got. It was hilarious. The "I'm out of my depth" line, had me in stitches, tears rolled down my face and the bear scene, Dax cracked me up. If your looking for a serious film, this is not it. This is a film to watch, when your chilling' out with friends, to have a laugh whilst watching 3 lads blunder their way through on a life changing (questionable, maybe) journey. I imagined meeting up with my old chums from childhood and being in their shoes, for a brief second which was bizarre. Dax Shephard was the only actor I was unsure of, however he shone. He was fantastic, very humorous and a joy to watch. A great cast of lads. Well done guys, you did a great job. Had me entertained and I can't wait to get a copy on DVD. I take my hat off to you.....Many thanks. Trutcroft x
Good for a Laugh
posted on 03 Apr 2009I only went to see this cos my friend asked me if I wanted to, and I never turn down going to the cinema. Plus, I had actually seen the trailers for this movie and thought it looked rather funny. It tells the tale of three friends who go on a treasure hunt in memory of their friend, Billy.Seth Green plays a 'scared of everything' doctor called Dan Mott or 'Danno' to his friends.Matthew Lillard plays the brave Jerry Conlaine, he's basically the leader of the group and is known as 'Jer' to his mates.Dax Shepard plays the humorous Tom Marshall, or 'Tommy' to his mates. He is the flirt of the group and makes most of the jokes.I thought this film was good, but I would only recommend it to:- Teenagers - Young Adults - Some AdultsMost of the jokes are cheesy, but a lot of them shine through and the story makes you remember about how to stick with your mates and you'll be fine. However, the jokes and plot sometimes get a bit cheesy so that you cringe, but it is a good movie overall.***** - Excellent **** - Good *** - Average ** - Bad * - RubbishI'd Give Without a Paddle - ****
Had it's moments
posted on 01 Apr 2009Without a Paddle (2004, Dir. Steven Brill) Three friends, whose lives have been drifting apart, reunite for the funeral of a fourth childhood friend. When looking through their childhood belonging, they discover a trunk which contained details on a quest their friend was attempting. It revealed that he was hot on the trail of the $200,000 that went missing with airplane hijacker D.B. Cooper in 1971. They decide to continue his journey, but do not understand the dangers they will soon encounter.Although the cast listing of 'Without a Paddle' is small, it's still got three great comedy stars leading it. But, this still doesn't give it top marks for best film. The story has a lot of heart, and you really feel as if all four friends have known each other for years. Placing them into the forest, also have some great comedy settings, but the script isn't full of many laugh out loud moments. There are some highlights which are a pleasure, but most of the time, it seems as if a joke is missing. Still, it is not very long and will still make a good movie to watch on a wet day."Help me." - Dan Mott (Seth Green)
One Awesome Movie
posted on 18 Mar 2009It's been a long time since I've seen a movie where I have laughed so hard that my sides hurt when I left the theater. I enjoyed this movie from beginning to end. They couldn't have picked a better cast to provide us with such side splitting laughter. I liked the fact that they kept the story simple and focused more on the actors and their ability to make us laugh in every situation that came up in the movie. I will definitely own this movie when it comes out on DVD and I can't wait to see all of the features that come with it. Seth Green is so much fun to watch. I have enjoyed watching Dax Shepherd on Punk'd, but he is a much better actor in real movies than I think most people give him credit for. I encourage everyone who wants a good laugh to go see this movie. Very well done.
My new least favorite movie. Just watch the trailer instead.
posted on 12 Feb 2009Out of all the movies I've seen, you can count the movies I've completely hated on one hand. 'Without a Paddle' just made that list.I have never been so tempted to walk out of a movie in my life. Within 30 minutes of 'Without a Paddle' I desperately wanted to get up and leave. But since I was with a group of friends, I had no choice but to squirm in my seat through the whole movie. It's one of those terrible movies where, instead of trying to be funny, it just tries to be gross, and it succeeds way too often. The main characters are a delinquent (Dax Shephard), a nerd (Seth Green), and a philosopher (Matthew Lilliard). Shephard's character is so degenerate and Green's character is so dorky that they are hard to like, while Lilliard's character is so less solid than the other two that it's hard to care. The movie starts out with the three, along with their best friend Billy, as children. Then the three grow up, Billy dies, and the whole movie goes down hill from there. As kids, the boys had planned a treasure hunt to find an escaped burglar and the place where he'd stashed his loot. After Billy dies, the other three decide to actually attempt the treasure hunt. They get into a canoe, get lost, and encounter a pair of psychotic marijuana farmers that chase them through the woods with guns and knives the rest of the movie, which is all stoner jokes, poop jokes, pee jokes, gay jokes, lesbian jokes, erection jokes, and gross-out jokes that AREN'T funny. 'Without a Paddle' attempts to develop a heart at the end of the movie, throwing in a moral about friendship and living life to its fullest, but it's already too late by then.'Without a Paddle' does have its funny parts, BUT THEY'RE ALL IN THE PREVIEW! (Pardon my shouting.) If you're looking for a laugh, save yourself the time and money and just watch the trailer instead.
A hilarious film
posted on 06 Feb 2009Without a Paddle is a film that takes a legend and is revised into the plot where three people are trying to prove it's existence. This film is hilarious, a great ride! Matthew Lillard, Seth Green, and Dax Shepard are hilarious as three friends going to the forest to look for the legendary D.B. Cooper, the man who hijacked a plane and stole a whole lot of money. But along the way they come cross two hillbilly pot farmers, tree activists, and a lone caveman who says he was Cooper's partner. This film has a great cast with a good plot with wacky jokes piled right in making a comedy soufflé. Jokes keep rolling at you from the gang being high while running through a burning marijuana field, the three needing to hug together for warmth, "The hills have gone gay!", and more! Great one liners and sight gags from all the actors, with each actor showing their characters personality. My props go to Seth Green playing the nerd take charge of his own life kind of guy, Dr. Dan Mott. Sure you may here bad reviews about this movie saying that it's stupid but it's really not! It is a great movie with a great cast with a good moral, Without a Paddle gets the big 8. Great film for all kids to adults, enjoy!
Great movie
posted on 02 Feb 2009Big Chill meets Brother Where Art Thou meets Great Outdoors meets Deliverance. Great movie! An adventure many would like to take(but better prepared, of course!)As with any great movie there are many great one-liners, and with the adventure lots of wondering about whats going to happen next. The character development was fantastic! 3 very distinct personalities, and the fantastic intro showing them doing boy things and growing up really helped illustrate their relationship. I don't buy many movies, but this one I probably will!By the way, what if I don't want to fill out 10 lines!?
Horrible Film
posted on 21 Jan 2009This is one of the worst movies i have ever seen. The plot is stupid and the actors are even worse. The humor is pathetic at best, this movie is in no way funny. Seth Green is a terrible actor and Matthew Lillard and Dax Sheppard are just as bad. This movie is so bad it makes a movie like "Good Burger" look like it should win an Oscar. Just when you think this movie cannot get any worse, Burt Reynolds appears. He has officially ruined the career he once had. This is the kind of movie that ruins an actor's future. I wish the obese men who chase them around the forest throughout this movie had succeeded in killing the three of them, it would have been the best ending to this catastrophe. This movie truly steals time from your life, i would rather watch "will and grace" for an hour and twenty minutes. When a movie like this comes out you need to wonder if the apocalypse is coming. Shame on everyone in involved in making this sad, shameful film.

The Little Chill
posted on 27 Aug 2009Spoilers herein.I'm getting more and more familiar with the disconnect among these three things: a good film, a good idea for a film and a good idea about a film. I think these are often unrelated. I know that many bad movies are worthwhile for me because I take away some interesting thought about it.But there are lots and lots of movies where you can just tell that it started with a clever idea and good intentions. Then for whatever reasons, it just falls apart - perhaps because of studio bosses or inadequate talent or the money ran out or the experiment failed.I suppose the original idea here was no less fertile than Big Chill, Stand by Me, City Slickers or Rats Meet Henry. Set it up and let references to other films waft by and deal with them skitlike. It could have worked. It was a good idea. All movies are about other movies anyway.I think in this case, the actors simply had no skit talents.Ted's Evaluation -- 1 of 3: You can find something better to do with this part of your life.
