Takes A New Perspective On Road Trips...

posted on 31 Aug 2009

I liked Wrong Turn.It was a really entertaining movie. This movie was actually one of the creepiest movies I have seen.It was just so terrifying, how these people who got lost, hence the name "Wrong Turn",and pretty soon they're attacked by cannibalistic inbreds, who have been living out in the woods. It was absolutely chilling to me.This movie managed to be over-the-top blood and gore, which I liked, and have really good action and acting as well.Reading one of the other comments on Wrong Turn, the person tells you otherwise. They tell you that this was a horror movie that didn't have enough of the horror ingredients.I thought this film actually had TOO much horror components.Everything that makes up a good horror movie, this film had too much of.Great movie, and was totally worth watching.

Wrong Turn right for Eliza!!!

Wow! Great film. It's nice to see Eliza in a film that shows her strength and vulnerability as an actress. V. Good. The scene under the table made me wretch, totally gross, but needed for the film. Storyline could have been developed more, but great none the less! Definately see it again!!! Go see it!!!!

Ordinary, slow-moving. Unworthy of Eliza Dushku's talents.

Wrong Turn gets a semi-favorable assessment in my view because director Rob Schmidt isn't quite as desperate to show off camera trickery as most of his modern-horror peers, like William Malone.

That doesn't make Wrong Turn a good horror movie. As a chase/adventure movie it fares okay, but you won't feel any of the gut-wrenching sense of doom that you'll get from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Night of the Living Dead. For one thing, the characters talk too much, as if constantly afraid that we won't know what they're trying to do. Their exploration of the cannibals' house is obviously ripped off from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but it contains none of the freakish horror of that horror classic because of the characters' running commentary. They are also not an interesting bunch to watch because of their complete lack of back story. Not even the enormous charisma of Eliza Dushku can rescue this one, because aside from the fact that she's on the rebound, we know nothing about her character Jessie other than that she's capable of feeling fear and can fight back if she needs to. Hardly the stuff of complex, engaging characterization. The other characters fare no better. Lead Desmond Harrington is colourless and uninteresting, and Emmanuelle Chriqui as Carly is especially irritating, just begging to be killed off but unfortunately keeps on surviving.

The worst part about the film, though, is the makeup. The cannibals in this film look more goofy than horrifying. One glimpse at Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Leatherface and there's no comparison. Makeup whiz Stan Winston scored poorly this time, and he isn't helped by Schmidt's crafting of these characters into grunting, giggling, monkey-like boys who just don't command respect. They can kill three dozen more people in this film and we still wouldn't be that scared, not in the same way as we're scared by The Shape, Leatherface, or Damien.

A semi-adequate horror film, free of the ridiculous bells and whistles of its contemporaries, but still missing the mark.

Not the best, but still satisfies

Right off hand I'm gonna tell that this movie isn't anything you haven't seen before. It has a typical horror movie set up: a bunch of young people in the woods in the backcountry of some state who run into a bunch of psychos who want to hunt them down and butcher them. If you're thinking " wow, that sounds a lot like the Texas Chain Saw Massacre", well, you'd be thinking right. There's even a gas station scene with a weird creepy hick. But I'm not trying to convey the message that is a Chain saw Massacre rip-off. Texas Chain Saw Massacre was awesome, so I see no problem in people wanting to make more movies like it. But anyways, Wrong Turn offers nothing new to genre, it's just a plain good ole slice 'em and dice 'em popcorn horror flick. It's not trying to be exceptional, it's just trying be a horror film with enough blood, gore and thrills to suffice any horror fan for the 84 duration time, and in that context, it succeeds.

Getting screwed of same plot lines...........

Wow another prophetic-scene movie did....I've seen few movies like this same story and almost plot line... It did well, I'm not surprised for the scenes. Just a little with the help of sound and background. The chasing with the fellas like in " Texas Chainsaw Massacre " with a love teams like Kevin Zeggers and Lindy Booth. They also a love team in "Dawn of the Dead"..........The 84 minutes didn't feel me bad. Despite of usually used plot, i appreciate the movie. A strong lead female star were luckily survive the horrifying adventure of her life!!!!! (just like Jessica Biel)

These trees were made for walking...

WRONG TURN is a TERRIBLE flick. Really bad. It tries to be this TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE kind of horror film but fails are every lame attempt. There's no story. Cute young people end up stranded in a middle of a forest where deformed inbred killers live. The killers looks ridiculous. They belong more in Ridley Scott's LEGEND than in a backwoods slasher! The characters of the victims are annoying. None of the actors can act, including Eliza Dushku. The characters behave in really stupid ways. When the group ends up in the killers house, it takes them forever to figure out that they shouldn't be there. The film is filled with an amazing amount of clichés. For instance, at the beginning, when we see the two rock climbers. The man is quickly killed off screen but the attack on the woman climber is drawn-out and violent. The film is only that: women attacked in violent ways while the men are killed off screen or killed in not so graphic ways. But the thing that sinks this turkey is the whole scene where we see three of the young folks walk about in those HUGE trees. I never laughed so much. It is, by far, THE MOST LUDICROUS scene ever conceived in the history of cinema. I've never witnessed anything so stupid, and I've seen a lot of bad movies. Do the producers think that audiences are THAT stupid?!?!Anyway, like so many horror films made these days (JEEPERS CREEPERS, DARKNESS FALLS, etc) WRONG TURN is a totally worthless so-called "horror" film.

Great movie, hands down...

The only reason I saw this movie was because I saw it had Eliza Dushku in it. But that is only one of the reasons this movie is so good. The plot was pretty standard, yet managed to create something quite unique. Casting was great and all the actors seemed to suite their parts. Some pretty cool deaths in the movie, standard 'jumpy' parts and the usual you'd expect from a movie in this genre. The movie has an on going chill of suspense throughout which makes the movie even better. My only problem with the movie is that it didn't touch much on the history of the "bad guys". Shame, but in no means demeans the movie. The movie is scary and as horrors go "gets the job done".

Wrong Turn actually was a very good movie it made me think and had me at the edge of my seat the whole time. Other than that is was weird but still very good.

I don't know if this movie or the Hills Have Eyes came out first, but they were sort of the same. The one chick I was just hoping she would hurry up and die. She kept saying "I Can't, I Can't" I would have left her right there. Other than that pretty predictable movie. Glad I bought it for cheap!!

Wrong Movie... TO BUY

posted on 13 Aug 2009

I bought this because i thought it was going to be good like texas chainsaw massacre due to the misleading reviews on here. It wasnt. It was nowhere near as good as tcm. The acting SUCKED, the plot predictable and the story has been done before. The only 2 decent actors were Jeremy sisto and the other guy who was going to the interview in the begining. I do not recomend this. I would rent this if you want to see it but definetly do not buy, especially for 25 bucks! Its not even worth the 7 bucks i paid used for it. I shoulda just stuck with the horror classics. I recomend you do the same.

As far as teen slashers go, this is very satisfying.

posted on 13 Aug 2009

I was lucky enough to pick up an extra ticket for this film at the 2003 Sitges Film Festival in Spain and it's true what other users have said that it is predictable, but it makes a good job of it despite it. There are times that you will jump off your seat (I won't say when but it involves arrows) and some of the death scenes were so spectacular that the whole theatre erupted with applause. So if you have some the time and the money, I suggest you see it (or rent it when it comes out) because as the world of cinema entertainment grows, you just can't get enough of those teen slashers!(one minor point, DO NOT leave your seat when the credits first appear)

As a film major this film was a joke

posted on 11 Aug 2009

Watching this film one should be an insult to the people of West Virgina. Through out this film the director made it clear that the film was taking place in West Virgina. Even though jokes are made about inbreeding and the state I do not suggest a movie based in the state and creating an even bigger stereotype of the inbreeding in West Virgina. Im from North Carolina and so I have no reason for this film to offend me but I just dont believe that films should be used to expand stereotypes of people. As forr the plot I thought the film should not be considered in the same category of horror as such great horror films of the 30s and 40s. I watchd this movie with a half full audidence and I did not hear any scream but actually laughter. I dont like being so harsh on a movie but as I film student who hopes to work on movies one day, Iwas just glad I did not persoanlly pay for this film. Anyway back to the plot. The plot was given away in the first few minutes of the movie through the newspaper clippings. Watching the clippings I as an auidence member did not understand exactly why the newspaper clippings until further in the movie. This film had no flow to it. First peole were killed then newspaper clippings about inbreeding in west virgina and then kids being chased by ugly poorly made villians in which there is no real explanation of exactly why these creatures became cannibals. Inbreeding is just not a good enough explanation on why three people kill. This films plot was so predictable it was funny. At the watch tower jumping onto tree limbs I believe would cause more injury than just a few scratches. At the end the audience could feel that the villians were going to come back again . This movie ranked down there with Jeepers Creeper and I hope that a sequal does not come from this movie. This "Horror" film to me should not even be considered part of this genre becuase when I think of horror i think of Christopher Lee in Dracula. I highly do not recommend this film on any aspects. The only part on the film i did enjoy was the special effects.

Great horror flick!

Just a few days ago I ordered "Wrong Turn" and "The Hills Have Eyes" and finished watching them back to back a few minutes ago. Even though THHE's was very disappointing, "Wrong Turn" was everything I had hoped it would be. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time and I about jumped out of my skin several times...my only complaint is that the movie could have been longer as I did not want it to end! I won't go into what the movie is about as I am sure others have already done that. I would just like to say that this is a horror flick all fans of the genre should have. It left me wondering why I just learned about the movie last week. Did it not make it to the theaters? hmmm...anyway, get it. You won't be disappointed...oh, and don't pay any attention to those who may give this movie a negative review. I have watched most of the horror flicks produced and this one has moved into my top 20 horror list of all time. It is that good.

Excellent movie

This movie is so scary because it is so true to life. In other words, this can really happen.
Take a wrong turn in the mountains and beware of inbred brothers. Demented, gory, suspense, great acting. Eliza has come a long way since "True Lies." She is a gifted actress and does her character so well. I will never travel without a map again and if there's a delay, I'm waiting! I will not take a short cut, ever!!

The Horror Surprise of the year... finally a horror film in the cinema.

posted on 07 Aug 2009

Words alone cannot express the satisfaction I received upon walking out of this film with my wife and best friend, I mean I can count the times I actually saw a REAL horror film inside a cinema in the last 15 years on my right hand, and upon sitting in the theatre and munching down on some popcorn I was really unprepared for what was to come. You see months ago I was more than a bit hyped up for the release of House of a 1000 corpses (despite my own fears of what it really was going to be like) and in the spirit of all the hype that film was receiving I had actually began to BELIEVE it was indeed about to become the first throwback to an age when horror/slasher/midnight features were actually what they were meant to be: HORROR. Well no need to dwell on it, but truth is that instead of a "horror" film we got nothing more than a overdone music video that showcased elementary school dialogue, pathetic pacing, needless jokes that were not funny, artwork that if indeed was meant to be in the film seemed like it had no business there, and a cast that I honestly could not give 2 s**ts about if they paid me to watch it. Why bring this up you ask? Well today I saw the film I was hoping to see that day, albeit under another name. I'll be totally honest, other than the fact that Stan Winston was doing the fX I really had no high hopes going into this film, I figured more "NU Teen horror cliché" (you know, the kind that deserve a PG rating as opposed to the R due to the fact that an episode of Buffy would most likely being more scary, Scream and its many pathetic clones are a damned good example of what I mean), but thankfully I my expectations and what I got were totally wrong. Its as simple as you can imagine, and it WORKED on so many levels. The direction was masterful in how the angles and interactions came across, the FX was INCREDIBLE (I mean OMFG someone PLEASE release a directors cut of this baby, its about time some real GORE returned to American horror!) The cast that was great (in particular seeing the highly underrated Jeremy Sisto amongst them was a treat), and the concept that very well could have been a silly takeoff of Deliverance with garbage teen actors actually rose above what a weak studio exec would typically want to give us some thrills, chills and oh yeah did I mention GORE? SPOILER: Three Finger, Saw Tooth and One Eye were also very enjoyable twisted, hulking villains. They were all business in how they stalked their victims and incredibly fun to watch (trust me, some great visceral images come about). In closing I just wanna say THANK YOU to Rob Schmidt for having the dignity to not make "another" weak contrived Wes Cravenesque vehicle, for not giving us an almost required by studio exec character like Rob Schneider that adds needless laughter during what is sure to be a serious and tense situation, but above all else THANK YOU for giving us a HORROR film! 10/10

Derivative, Boring, Badly Acted, Written and Directed

posted on 05 Aug 2009

**POSSIBLE SPOILERS** It's one thing to emulate previous movies. It's another thing to simply lift one scene after another from previous movies, put them together and have the nerve to call it your own creation. WRONG TURN is a blatant rip off of THE HILLS HAVE EYES, DELIVERANCE, THE Texas CHAINSAW MASSACRE and the more obscure JUST BEFORE DAWN. It is so similar, in fact, to the latter title, I am tempted to assume the filmmakers used that title as a template, assuming so few people had seen it, they would never get found out.At one point, one of the characters even remarks that their situation is similar to DELIVERANCE. Is this the screenwriters' method of "cleverly" referencing a previous title, or subtly admitting they are fully aware of their guilt in plagiarizing the movie? After the obligatory SEVEN-style opening credits, the movie jumps from aspects of the four above titles to make up it's plot. We get the ominous backwoods gas station owner (DELIVERANCE), the car crack up which results in the protagonists having to walk (HILLS), the inbred mutants scurrying around the woods (HILLS, DAWN), the protagonists stumbling into the mutants' house and finding their trophies from previous captures (CHAINSAW), and so on and so on. Actually, WRONG TURN doesn't just stop at those four movies, but steals from other similar titles as MOTHER'S DAY and MOTEL HELL. It doesn't just tackle similar subject matter as those titles, it borrows entire plot points from them, liberally, and sticks them together in a PULP FICTION-esque hodge-podge of backwoods exploitation. That wouldn't be so bad, if the movie was any good. But it isn't. It sucks. The acting, screenplay, direction, and pretty much everything else about this movie is mind-bogglingly awful. Watching the gifted Jeremy Sisto wrestle with such moronic dialog is painful, while Desmond Harrington and Eliza Dushku seem to be having a who-can-be-more-wooden-and-monotone contest. Characters often behave in a ridiculously illogical manner, such as a moment in which a female character who repeatedly complains about how desperately she has to pee finally finds a bathroom, then fixes her hair and wanders around the room aimlessly before finally discovering the toilet is too gross to sit on. The movie leads up to as predictable a finale as I've ever seen, with the characters you expect to get killed getting killed, and the ones you expect to survive surviving. There's the "killer isn't really dead" gag -- twice -- during the final battle scene. Then, in a triumph of originality and innovation, there's the obligatory TWIST ENDING! Now who saw that coming? You know a movie is bad when barely halfway through, you're already coming up with sarcastic remarks you can make about it on IMDb. Perhaps viewers who are blissfully unaware that WRONG TURN is made up of pieces of far better movies that came before it will find something entertaining about it.Then again, they would have to be blissfully unaware of quality as well.

No wrong turns here.

posted on 03 Aug 2009

The only "Wrong Turn" here is 20th Century Fox's lack of enthusiasm to market such a fun, frightening film. No review screenings, little TV or print advertising and a non-presence on the talk show circuit make it appear that the studio is trying to run this movie off the road. That's too bad, because few horror fans will hear about "Wrong Turn," one of the rare recent fright flicks to get the heart thumping. Director Rob Schmidt's film makes it seem as though homicidal inbred mutants freely roam the dark hills of West Virginia, stalking and destroying nubile 25-year-olds. This won't win any rewards - especially from the West Virginia tourist board - but all that matters in movies such as this is quick pacing, an involving story, and a villain so creepy he'll sneak into your nightmares. No matter - horror movies, in which the black guy always dies first -have never been a bastion of political correctness. For "Wrong Turn," it's check, check and triple check. The featured group of Noxzema-faced campers must run, screaming for their dear lives, from not one but three deformed psycho mountain men, rendered strikingly by the makeup department.

WRONG TURN-GOOD BUY

Thank God, not just another pretty-teen horror flick. WRONG TURN will keep you on the edge of your seat and it doesn't take long to get there! In fact, there are two deaths before the opening credits even start! We also get to see Mr. Stan Winstons awesome special effects throughout the whole movie, and he won't let you down. Next to Tom Savini, Stan Winston is the best when it comes to gory effects and make-up work. This DVD is worth every penny because you also get some good extras along with some good gore. The death in the treetop is sure to become a classic! Do not hesitate and buy this DVD now! If you are a true horror fan and like the 70's and 80's horror flicks add this to your collection today. RATED R FOR ADULT LANGUAGE, BRIEF DRUG USE, AND STRONG HORROR VIOLENCE AND GORE.

Nothing new under the sun, but plenty to scare you

Although this is a rather derivative
horror movie -- a cinematic goulash
made from bits of DELIVERANCE, TEXAS
CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, THE HILLS HAVE
EYES, and all the FRIDAY THE 13TH movies
-- it's done well, and so makes for an
exciting viewing experience. The plot
is genuinely suspenseful, the special
effects are state of the art -- in
other words, extremely nasty -- the
acting is decent, and the characters,
while they could have been a bit further
developed, are still more real than the
shooting gallery ducks that populate so
many movies of this type. And there was
almost none of the gratuitous sex that
always seems to turn up in these movies.
(In fact, one such scene was cut from the
final version. It's included in the
deleted scenes on the DVD.) The movie
also made the wonderfully disturbing
suggestion that the surrounding
community, such as it was, knew
exactly what this tribe of inbred
monsters were doing and had decided
to just let it go on. I would have
liked a little more explanation of
exactly how the these monsters came
to be -- over and above the newspaper
clippings we see at the beginning of
the movie -- but I realize that really
isn't the point. My one real complaint is that WRONG
TURN supports the stereotype of
southerners as stupid at best and
depraved at worst. I'm not s
southerner myself, but I did live
in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill,
North Carolina area for awhile, and
thus have become sensitized to this issue.

One of the worst movies I've seen. It isn't the least scary, the plot sucks, & it's not in any way creative. All these comparisons to Texas Chainsaw are utterly baffling to me. I don't mind a cheesy horror pic, but this was a total waste of time.
