DIRECTOR:On his birthday, Walter Sparrow, an amiable dog-catcher, takes a call that leaves him dog bit and late to pick up his wife. She's browsed in a bookstore, finding a blood-red-covered novel, a murder mystery with numerology that loops constantly around the number 23. The story captivates Walter: he dreams it, he notices aspects of his life that can be rendered by "23," he searches for the author, he stays in the hotel (in room 23) where events in the novel took place, and he begins to believe it was no novel. His wife and son try to help him, sometimes in sympathy, sometimes to protect him. Slowly, with danger to himself and to his family, he closes in on the truth.

In L.A., Solo has writer's block after a successful first book he's ashamed of. He's broke, thanks to a year in analysis; in their final session, his shrink suggests a pet. Solo buys a scrawny terrier who adds to his problems: the dog isn't house-trained; Solo owes money to a thug who's angry Solo's spent money on a dog; at a dog park, the dog is bitten and Solo begs a woman he's just met to pay the vet bill, so now he owes her; and, his friend Casper has introduced him to a persistent rich girl who decides she wants the dog. He could sell, settle his debts, and return to life with a clean carpet. Or, he could figure out why he doesn't want to part with the dog.

In Chicago, the lonely architect Alex Wyler has a troubled relationship with his father Simon Wyler. In 2004, he buys an old glass house in a lake, designed and built by his father, and he finds a message in his mailbox from the former tenant, the also lonely Dr. Kate Forster, asking to deliver her correspondence in an address downtown. Alex meets his brother Henry in Chicago and when they go to the address with Dr. Forster's correspondence, they find a building of luxury apartments under construction to be delivered eighteen months later. After some messages, Alex and Kate disclose that she is living in 2006 and Alex in 2004, they fall in love for each other and they try to find means to meet each other.
